This game is probably the early "The Dark Souls of driving game". The police AI is brutal and of course, that parking lot tutorial.

I'd say that title goes to Driver 2, those chase missions and time limits did not mess around.

The parking lot area is not a tutorial. There's a tutorial in the menu, and the parking lot is meant as a test for a player who had completed the tutorial already.

If you go to the options menu at the main menu and turn the cop difficulty from medium to easy, that changes how the cop roadblocks are laid out, making it easier to navigate through. It’s also in the options menu in Driver 2 in case you are reviewing that game next.
I always loved Driver. Usually replay it every few years. Going to again next year for the series’ 25th anniversary.

i remember that intro mission, that caused me so much rage, i can only imagine how many players returned the game due to the test mission and how difficult it was. most players probably never even saw the bank mission due to it. But a better way to play it is via emulator with save states makes the game a ton more enjoyable.

Driver is one of those franchises of driving games that goes beyond car culture. Need for Speed Underground was a study on the Fast and Furious references and american/euro tuner scene and specialized media. Gran Turismo (especially after GT4) is a car museum and a track VIP paddock.
Now Driver, is a whole diferent beast. They nailed the style, the writing and had a great attention to detail in every single texture to feel like a 70's movie. Even the tyre screeching and crash sounds were from the movies. Playing this back on the late 90's was truly immersive, seeing the real world bodega signs and windows lights on the buildings. Even the menu and opening film are very well done. Its a car chase film and it ain't ashamed of showing itself to kids and teens who wanted something different, but never expected anything like it.

The tutorial mission got me stuck as a little kid for hours, but it is actually very easy, the demo car shows what you need to do (and which buttons to press) andalso the manual (on site 15) explains it in very much detail. People saying it is hard, never looked into the manual or tried the training mode (with the demo car). But the timeline is indeed strict (for newcomers).

I only failed it so many times because I was 11 and didn't know what a slalom was. As soon as I looked it up, it was cake. If memory serves me right, you can knock out 3 or 4 items off that list within the first few seconds.
But that last story mission, though... I could never beat it legitimately. Thank you, GameShark.

It has been a long time since I played it, but I would not say this held up. It was a blast when it came out, but I would not think of picking it up today. It's a good game to watch a review on to see where open world car games got their start.

I should let you know that the PC version does have explosions, it's that one mission with the pickup truck with a crate in the back, which I hate with a passion. If the crate takes too much damage then it will generate a BIG explosion killing you and your vehicle, it's one special effect that is exclusive to that one mission.

  • @Xegethra

There was also Urban Chaos that came out around the same time as this. Although it was more like True Crime before True Crime as opposed to GTA 3. But if you wanna go really far back, you could, maybe, put the Bethesda Terminator game as an early GTA like before GTA....even before GTA 1.
The PC version had you driving more cars, at least in Take A Ride. PC version also had some map changes.

Let me remind you.... the parking garage level is NOT the tutorial, the actual tutorial is in the main menu, the parking garage level is just a test for players who have already done the tutorial.

  • @jothain

Biggest flaw of the game is mentioned indeed. It has those quite cheap roadblocks you can't usually pass without taking bit of damage and that it's annoying that cop cars are always essentially matched to your speed and your driving line, especially cause almost all roads are just grids. Its not Interstate 76, but nevertheless absolute one of my playstation favorites.

Such a classic, my bro n cousin had a blast with Driver 🤣, I don't care how much people say its not better than GTA, to this day GTA still haven't nailed that feel of panic as you actually feel like your pushing a ton of steel to it's limits 👍

9:21 Regarding the difficulty of the first mission, now imagine being a child who doesn't speak English trying to complete this unskippable mission that is your only way to access the rest of the game, without knowing what 80% of the list of tricks means (and no youtube, google or translators available to find out). The amount of frustration and trial and error was exhausting. Driver was very popular in Brazil in the early 2000s and my sister's boyfriend at the time became something of a celebrity in my city for knowing how to complete the first mission. People from other neighborhoods would call him to their houses to do the first mission and save it immediately so they could play the rest of the game later.

I remember what a pain that parking lot tutorial was. Here is a trick I used if I replayed it again. I saved a file right after finishing the tutorial. For all future games I would load that file and when I would save the new game, new file😊. Problem solved. Granted you still have to finish that tutorial that first time, but after the game is a breeze (until the final level of course)

Erm. A few odd things to mention besides that I don't find the first mission nearly *that* hard as the internet does, plus The Rescue is an annoying one, so is the final mission, but they're all perfectly doable, even on Cop Difficulty HARD (this is interesting, as in Easy you lose/wreck them easier thus you in way see more, in Hard is opposite, applies to Driver 2 as well). Also if one plays the Japanese version you have more time in each mission and Driving Games (by a whopping 5 seconds) and you also take less damage from crashes and cops.
San Francisco is odd as cops don't know what to do to get you if you drive on the sidewalks for some reason (applies to the grass portion of the bridge you cross in the first part of Bust Out Jean-Paul), which also allows quite easy 60:00:00 in Survival mode. Also yes final mission can be buggered to win it but it's not nearly as satisfying than doing it the intended normal way.
Too bad the PC version (which also looks uglier to me) doesn't allow you to save after every mission, only in motel rooms. Couple that with the Driver 2 -like ramming missions in that version it is somewhat harder version of the game.
GBC version with difficulty is generally in hard to insane territory, if peoples have made it without cheatings in real GBC that's great. The final mission is piss easy there though.

I had this on Pc, and it looked way better on there than Playstation. Loved the game! The cop chases were awesome, and I spent a lot of time on the film director mode. I also had Driver parallel lines on Xbox, but it was pretty average GTA cloning.

  • @Vengeance19
    @Vengeance19 8 месяцев назад

Awesome but unpolished game. The training mode shows how to do the carpark tutorial, but i feel that once you unlock the final city (New York) the PS1 version in particular lacks any sort of polish. The cutscenes are sunny while almost every NYC mission is in the rain and some walls have wrong and misleading collision boxes that made me fail near the end of the missions multiple times. And some missions are just plain terrible.
"The Rescue" is frustrating because the annoying rain/slippery roads + PS1 slowdown, unrelenting road blocks and the long distance you need to cover. And because the game loves to spam cops it causes even more slowdown. It also has the glitchy walls near the end, which i think werent an issue in the PC version.
"Presidents Run" i basically glitched in the PS1 version because of how tired i got of The Rescue, and I had already beat it on the PC version properly anyways (which also has the torpedo enemies but doesnt have the terrible slowdown).

Makes no sense for you to recommend the first Driver and not recommend Driver 3, Driver 3 improved over previous titles but people set expectations too high. The first Driver is way more outdated, worse graphics and low fps, but you reccomend it because the game was regarded as a classic.
