    Once, when I was in a farmer's field painting, the farmer showed up with his tractor to cut the hay. I was close to the road and didn't see his house to ask for permission, or I would have knocked on his door. He asked me what I was doing and I told him I was painting his field and that I hoped he didn't mind me being there. I'll never forget his reply. He said, "Now, what kind of world would this be if an artist couldn't stop and paint something beautiful"? Amen to that. Everyone I've ever talked with when out painting or drawing on location has been so kind and supportive, so don't let your fear of the unknown stop you from trying it.

      I stopped to sketch some beautiful flowers on a restaurant trellis, the owner came out and asked the same question. What are you doing? I'm sketching these beautiful flowers. He invited me to the hot house to show me his favorites. Those simple drawings hold a special place in my memories.

    I've been urban sketching for about a year and a half now after several years of stops and starts. My recommendation for any one who wants to get into it is to draw at least 30 minutes every day, even if it is simply a sketch of a corner in one's house or someone sitting in the lunch cafeteria at work. It's necessary to make drawing a habit. I think it's also important to let go of expectations that our sketches need to look exactly like whatever it is that we're sketching. It's only a sketch, not a masterpiece and certainly not a photo. I've found Teoh's videos of drawing on location very helpful, because it owns it when he makes a little mistake or uses artistic license be it looks better that way. Not every day is a good day to get out and draw on location so it's okay to use reference photos just for practice. I don't post those as urban sketches but they certain help me in developing skills.

    One thing that always bothered me with my urban sketching is when I get too obsessed (?) with straight lines. It made my drawings so stiff. I am now trying to make sure to be free and easy, simplifying the drawings made the drawing more lively

    I started watercoloring because of channels like yours and Mateusz Urbanowicz. My work has always been character driven so learning to go out and urban sketch or plein air paint has been quite the struggle. I'm definitely more comfortable people sketching but it's a goal of mine to become comfortable sketching and painting buildings and scenery. Thanks for all your hard work!

      Yasmine S. Oh yeah. He’s definitely more of an illustrator. But I was expressing that they both got me to dive into learning watercolor and trying to incorporate more than just characters in my work.

    Love your videos! Thank you for generosity in sharing:} Since the pandemic began, I began exploring drawing and watercolor and I love the concept of urban sketching!
    We had a glorious fall day yesterday and I went out for my very first time to practice urban sketching. I put together my supplies and headed out to capture a beautiful fall scene from a local lookout point near my home. I chose a quiet place that is not too busy. As you said in the video, I was so focused that I didn't really attend to people walking by, but did notice several times people slowed down and were interested in what I was doing. If I was more confident about my skills, I would have spoken to them - but I'm not quite there yet. Practice practice practice! Thanks again - I forward to more great videos!

    Thanks Teoh. Many years ago, before it was called urban sketching I would sketch outdoors on occasion.. I recently went out with a small group in Madrid. We were parked in front of a huge monument and I thought, “What the heck, I have nothing to lose” and I painted it without spending much time on the drawing part. Yes, it looks more like a giant octopus emerging from the earth. But as you point out, someday I’ll look back and see how far I’ve come. Thanks for the pep talk!

    I use markers and what I do is I go out with like 5 or 6 colors and a micron pen, like 2 grays, one green and maybe 2 or 3 tones of pink or orange. You don't get the "real" range of color but it allows you to differentiate the surfaces pretty well. It's more limited than watercolor but it's easier to carry around

    I really appreciate this video. I've been painting and drawing for about 3 years now, but some of my drawings have and haven't been urban sketches. I'm glad you mentioned the definition of urban sketching is to be able to tell where the scene is, or where the image was taken from. That is really helpful to remember! I took a break from drawing in June and I've been *so* nervous to start again. But when you mentioned that having a drawing skill is like riding a bike, I do agree with you. I still 'draw' in a different way still - quite a bit actually, because I'm a graphic designer, but fine art is different. But that statement gave me the confidence to pick up my sketchbook today and draw and paint again. Thank you!!! 😊

    Very informative ! Thank you ! : ) Oh.. fun fact about drawing ... it is one of the top things a person can do do build new brain cells and help to mitigate memory problems in older age. You not only remember the events that you draw.. just the act of drawing what you see is a huge benefit for your overall brain health ! : ) You don't need to take my word for it, just type "drawing and brain health" into the search bar of google.. several articles on the subject. : )

    • @amanda.correa
      @amanda.correa 4 года назад +1

      Aarti, if you REALLY want to do something, you will do. If you really want to draw, you will find your own way to stop "procrastinating" and you will get yourself into drawing. If you feel like drawing but you simply don't start, try to observe why you are not taking any action, think about what holds you back from starting... If you don't "feel" motivated and you don't reflect why you feel like this, and you don't think about an action to change it, if you don't take any action, you will never draw!

    I have a question for you: I have watched your videos on the Etcher bags and then one on the Darsie Beck Field easel bag. I was wondering which type you find the most useful, and the best value, now that you have had them a while. I can't remember if you actually did one on the Slate or Slate mini. Would you do a video comparing the bags and their strengths and weaknesses. It looked like you took the Beck bag with you to Amsterdam. Did you find it very useful?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  4 года назад

      The difference is in build quality. The Etchr is significantly more expensive but the finishing, look and feel, is more premium. Other than that, the functionality is similar. If I were to buy one, I would probably go with the cheaper, relatively speaking, Darsie Beck bag. But I don't really stand and draw, so I prefer my normal backpack with a portable stool.

    Thanks for the video. I'm an ultra-mega-hyper beginner Urban Sketcher, so I mostly draw from my own photos. I try buildings, street furniture, trees. Do You think it's a good idea to start like this? Drawing from photos can be considered as Urban sketching?

      Urban sketching is drawing on location. Drawing from photos doesn't count. The goal of urban sketching is to have people sketch from real life and experience.

    Are proportions and perspective should be concerned with enough or we can be least concern and sketch freely. Since i really love to draw without measuring much since that feels very liberting drawing freely without getting stuck to measure again and again.

    I just discovered this concept and I will be doing this! Really excited to start drawing outside. I am really interested in buildings since I am not really good at them. I have drawn Manga for years but of course this is very different. So I am curious to start this. I am considering buying a small sketchbook. my doodle book is almost full. But I might also include some sketches in my bullet journal... can't really decide XD

      @@anjukashyap9573 Urban sketching is just drawing on location. Generally speaking, there must be a focus on the place. E.g. drawing flowers is not urban sketching, but drawing people arranging flowers, or a flower shop is urban sketching.

    Wouldn't urban sketching be sketching in Urban environments? If I was out in the country painting a garden, I would classify that as plein air. I would classify urban sketching as a subset of plein air. I do not know how the community describes itself, but words do mean something. Great video though!

    • @oldmancuber6723
      @oldmancuber6723 4 года назад

      Just to clarify, it shouldn't really matter what one calls herself or what she is doing. If you live in the country, want to sketch your back yard and say I am a urban sketcher go for it. I just think if we are saying that what you are doing is not urban sketching, then the definition should be precise since you are attempting to educate people. When I stand out in the street in the inner city sketching two guys sitting on the stoop, I would call that urban sketching even though I did not include the surrounding environment. If I am in down town Manhatten sketching a crack in the sidewalk, I would call that urban sketching.
