Just the video I needed. I push really awkwardly and i get tired really fast. Still no balance on my foot but working on it. This tips are gonna come in handy a lot. Thank you one again
I'm a physiotherapist and I use this exercise a lot with my patients, not for skating but for joint stability, it's very good for preventing knee and ankle injuries :) If you want to improve your stability and level up this exercise, you can also put various targets around you (not only in the three directions) and reach them with your feet, trying to keep your knee and ankle very stable, wihout any rotation.
I have watched countless tutorials on so many different skateboard-related things because i decided to learn skating switch at the age of 34.. and your take on approaching stuff is so unique and super helpful. Thank you for sharing your progression and stay healthy!
I totally agree! In my opinion, Sarah is the best communicator there is on RUclips, when you are wanting the detailed specifics of learning to skateboard!
Simple, yet effective. The best kind of tip. I just started skating again after years and had to teach myself how to push again. I am regular stance but can push SO much better while goofy stance. I realized it was because my right leg is simply stronger than my left, so this should be the perfect technique to get my balance and strength built for my left leg. Leg strength is most noticeable when trying to balance on one leg while rolling after a push. Thanks for the content as always!
This video hits it for me because I’m starting to learn pushing switch. I know the techniques (since I’m already comfortable with my natural stance) and now it comes down to having my reverse balance and muscles to catch up, and your exercise here is a great method.
Woah, this is an incredible tip to help new sk8rs or ppl like me who are trying to learn how to push and be comfortable Switch. This exercise instantly helps!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us!!!
Thanks for the tip! I just picked up the sport this spring, but I have made it my mission to learn to ride switch before getting serious about anything else. I would love a video on weight distribution, no one talks about it for more than a second.
ah, weight distribution during pushing? I know I cover it a bit in this video about moving your feet while riding ruclips.net/video/VJShL3Qr_wg/видео.html If you have a specific question, I'd be happy to write it down, otherwise weight distribution is so wide and different depending on the skill 😃
You found skate iq yet? I'm a 26yr old about 3 months into skating and he's been phenomenal and talks alot about weight distribution and where to be on your board and when to be there. I mainly longboard but his tips have me using my longboard in skate parks pretty effectively i think for my skill level.
again you get the right video at the right time. I've been struggling to practice switch for a while and I'm really not doing very well... and now you're telling me "do something without a board and get stable first" and I can't believe how easy and useful that is. These little tips are why I love your videos so much and appreciate your work so much. Thanks
ah, stoked the timing worked for you! I've actually been utalizing the ground a lot more recently, and I think I'm finding some great ways work foundations. I love this though. I do this move literally while waiting for my tea to warm up 😂 that's how I started haha
Girl, this are the best Exercises ive done,. my anklesprain recovery wouldnt be that sucsessul as it got without these trainingsteqnicues! ive even made them harder with 10kg of weight in a hand, to shift the bodyweight and the bodycenter which makes these even harder, and do big scoops with the leg u havin outside (from front scoooooooop back - for mobility, & for opening ur hip! Thank u! 34/Back into boardin since 2 Months with 3 weeks Sprainrecovery after somewhat 18/19/20 years
Great video! When I'm at the gym I stand on a bosu ball while I'm resting between sets. So I'll do a set of bench for example, then go and stand on the ball on one leg for about 90 seconds, then do another set of bench, then go stand on the other leg, and keep alternativing. I started at 15-20 seconds and worked my way up to 90. It's improved my balance tremendously, especially in my non-dominant leg.
Top tip! I’m 42 and skateboarding around a year. What really gives me away as a beginner is my little bunny hop pushes. I just don’t ride on one foot very well. I’ll keep working on it!
This was very logical and thanks for sharing these. I use to skip rope and do some good old squats to gain strength and stability for my lower body. But i will try these out for sure.
Thank you for this. I just started skating at 21. I’m goofy for some reason even though I’m right foot Dominant in football(aka the thing that is stupidly called soccer for a lot of people 🤣), so I have more balance on my left foot, more power in my right…but somehow it just feels more natural to skate Goofy. This is really good to practice the balance and get better at pushing when im recovering from a session (my body is not used to this stuff lmao) without having to worry about falling Great video 😊
Ex Breakedancer 99-2016, since then ive stopped doin anything mostly. Never thougt i will be that wobbly on my feet like iam now. Turns out, As a Kid Regular, now Goofystand, my ankles arent build for skating cuz of the almost 20years of missing crucial exercises! Have currently some sort of weird dum pain in my akle (left push foot, insidepain), ICE + COMPRESSION helps a lot, do these slow and controlled at the start. i will give a resumé in around 1 week of doin these 5-10 minutes each foot! keep it up girl!
good stuff, i might give it a try. i also have a box that i built that is about 10"(h) x 20"(w) x 32"(l) that i use for one-legged dipped squats on either the 10" or 20" side.
I started sk8n more switch a couple years ago, and even tho i know HOW to push switch, my muscles aren't conditioned to take this role, so this simple exercise should help, thnx 👍🏾🤙🏾
No joke I kept trying to look up videos on how to push while skating, and each one I watched was just like asking a teacher for help and them just reading the question to you and leaving, as soon as you mentioned just regular balance, and I tried this, Ong I found the problem, I just can’t balance on my own leg even with out the board😂 this helped so much
😂 ahh that's awesome! I've had a bunch of these moments while skating--realizing "oh...I can't do this on the ground...no wonder this is hard on my board." Stoked to hear the video helped!
Just what I needed for building up strength in my left leg. I'm regular and my left leg on the board has no strength which affects my balance. I've noticed that my right leg that does the pushing is so much stronger and when I ride in switch I can balance better on this leg. Thanks.
number 1 tip is to place front foot below front bolts, with the way people push is not dead straight at side of board. it comes towards center line of skateboard like a V. if u have ur foot on front bolts ur back foot will hit back truck wheels and make skateboard turn and u fall off and ive been there and its horrible and i had to learn. pushing switch for me is a little weak but its not hard i am just not so strong with it because i dont practice it, so i still push mongo to get into switch. i have short legs too and 32" deck is long for me but i manage. when i step on my board i like to get comfortable like push, 1 sec manual couple times just to get the feel of control, some ppl do the pop sidewards 1 sec manual like powerslide sorta, its hard to explain i feel. i have now decided to not buy another girl deck as the concave is mellow and with me getting back into skating at 37 my flip is dead slow so im going back to my 8.13 flip deck which i loved.
Thanks! I need to practice this exercise. My left leg is so uncoordinated and weak compared to my right. I can push better in goofy stance, but I do tricks better in regular stance. Hopefully once I get some coordination and strength in my left leg both stances will get better.
right? even though I jump off my right leg more, it's the less stable one haha And I used this to even them out as much as I could so far. Hope it helps you too🙌
You really always have some great tips and tricks. Love your videos and especially that idea. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍 Im a longboarder and i do a technique called "skogging". yes it's a a mixture between jogging and skating. You basically alternate between your legs for the frontfoot. This is also a really good practice to get a solid normal AND switch push.
Have any tips for Mongo pushers and how to break the habit? I skate regular footed but my left leg feels weak and unstable when I have it on the board in order to push with my right foot. Just feels so much more natural to have the right foot balancing on the board and pushing with my left foot.
If you want to change riding feet, it's just a matter of putting in the work and time to strengthen up that leg. There's a painful adjustment period, but it's the only way haha I'd recommend doing the exercise in this video, pushing around on the left leg of course, but also long pushes with holds. I talk a bit about those holds in this video ruclips.net/video/llqSR4yaTk8/видео.html Just pushing with some strength and standing on one foot as long as you can. Even just 5 minutes per session of doing these two things will start you off! That's what really upped my switch pushing. And once you start to gain momentum, it's easier to spend more and more time on that foot. You got it 🙌
I'm so bad about doing exercises, I don't think my brain likes it, i'd rather just hop on my board and go, however I never thought about doing it while at work or wherever I'm not skating at!
I totally get that. Having very short, limited sessions myself..."exercise" and warm ups are the most tempting to skip. I literally started doing these while making tea. I'd just do them in the kitchen while heating up the water and it started helping 😂 easier to dedicate time to when I'm just chilling at home. Highly recommend it!
it's always a balance between technique and just putting in the reps 😃 and they feed into each other. This summer I was able to get better at pushing stronger because I had a few opportunities to skate more urban areas and do hundreds of big pushes. Going out and pushing with strength in mind can help
@@SarahParkMatott maybe I should do long distance rides with my board. 😅 But there is another thing that is nagging me. The board is not going straight ahead. When I’m on the board I can balance it out but when I push my weight goes on the ground and the board starts to move to the side again 🙉
@@sebastianbach6102 it’s a process for sure. You definitely want to be able to keep your weight over the board as you push though. That will help with speed 😃
It's astonishing how many people try athletics while lacking decent balance or mobility. If you can stand on one leg comfortably, You're going to have a lot of trouble skateboarding or other
most of the beginner now a days they are skipping the basic and fundamentals of skateboarding.. they want to learn ollie first..thats why they are prawn to injuries..
@@reckless_abandon_ I have only been skating for a year but I'd say you should learn how to ollie comfortably while moving. It helps when you need to go over things on the road such as curbs. Again I'm a beginner too so you don't gotta take my advice but I think its a good thing to try :)
There's "Technically" Nothing wrong with Mongo....it just puts you at a slight timing disadvantage when setting up for tricks in tighter areas. But for people who skate vert, you Should use whatever you're better with....it's the same thing as being Right or Left handed.

The exercise you recommended is very similar to pistol squats (one leg squat) and a few yoga poses 😊
