Not gonna lie, this is probably waaayyy more useful than the Braille Tutorial for learning how to ollie. How Aaron Kyro first teaches his viewers to ollie is by just slamming the tail on the floor to pop and then jump and slide. But from my experience that really stunted my progress since I felt like if an Ollie was suppose to be that easy why can’t I do that. I love the concept of learning tricks by progressing using other simpler tricks. It’s like a way to see step by step progress and I feel as if not enough people showcase that. Keep it up!
thank you! I'm really glad you like that approach. I love finding similar tricks, motions and ways to progress up to a final trick. I also think it makes learning the trick more fun in general 😃 It's all about the in-between 🙌

I began skate and longboarding 2 month ago at 45 years and I think I finally found my tutorial chanel for tricks, you are calme, precise on your explications and that's what I need for make me go foward thank you for all your efforts.
It's funny because I've been doing this trick (and variations upon) for 15 years, and nobody has ever been able to tell me the name of it either. We were just at the skatepark a few days ago, and a kid asked me what this same trick was called. And I didn't have an answer. It's also one of my favorite tricks to do, and I do variations on this trick every time I go skating. In fact it's my favorite was to jump up a curb.
I'm 32, just started (like pretty much everyone else here), and just want to say thank you. Watched dozens of your videos just to see the concepts at play, and they're killer. Appreciate the quality you're outputting.
hey i'm 32 too! (for a few more months haha.) how have you progressed in the last five months? i just started this week and i'm getting better at monster walks and tic-tacs thanks to sarah's videos 💪
@@hugejackedman1951 so I had to take a break. Got married and other things came up. So my abilities have slipped. But at the time, things were progressing pretty well.
Skating is something you have to do almost everyday. As a returning skater, I re learned the Ollie (Did it 10 in a row) to only lose it because I only have time to practice 30 min in a week. Great advice on the ankle snap.
Totally! Frequency (aka consistency) plays a huge role. But, it's also a good reminder to myself "you're not a kid with 3 hours to skate after school every day. Don't worry if you can't to X trick yet." The perspective is a good reminder for me 😃 also, welcome back to skating! 🙌
@@OffBeatMikeD I haven’t tried them, but I think practicing on concrete with those is better than in the grass! Since you can get a more solid pop than in grass 😃 and I’m a big fan of doing whatever makes you feel more comfortable while practicing since it can help boost your confidence 💪
Because I'm really determined to learn how to Ollie. I'm 31 years old, I was a big fan of Tony Hawk as a kid growing up. Playing the Tony Hawk pro skater game back in the day on play station would always get me hyped to go skate. But I never really learned how to Ollie, and stop skating as a kid. But now I'm older I want to be committed to learn to Ollie.
I know this video is old, but I wanted to thank you for it because it definitely helped me actually get my ollies off the ground (after failing for to do so for 2 years), and I could do them properly and consistently now. Honestly, this is one of the best ollie practise videos, and people should be watching this more. It addresses what other how to ollie videos lack. There's a group for skaters of colour/marginalised in my city that hosts monthly events that I go to, and I try to share this trick with people who seem like they're having a hard time popping their ollie. I also think switch ollies will be much easier to learn with this method. Thank you !!
I'm so glad to hear that! This trick really is like a little cheat code to help with some of those fundamentals of the ollie without even trying to ollie. I'm so happy to hear it's been so helpful. This trick gave me a ton of insight when I was developing my how to ollie method, which I then tested out switch to make sure it was actually helpful. Can confirm it helps switch too 💪 Good luck to you while you keep refining the tricks! Keep shedding 🙌
Hi Sarah! I am watching your videos to learn all I can and then teach it to my kids (11 and 14 yo) and wife (42). As a 40 years old person who never did this before, I am very happy for finding your channel. It is helping me to understand the basics (for now) and to reflect about a "skateboarding mindset" that I believe will help us develop in a safe pace, but still fun. Thanks again!

I watched one of your other videos where you did this trick and decided to learn it. It took me just one session and i loved it from the beginning! Its very basic yet builds up the important things you mentioned. I think it helps especially to get aquainted to landing when skating new terrain, ramps etc. Plus you can always stop as long as you want with one feet on the ground before going back in. Excellent trick, nice tutorial!
That's so awesome to hear! This trick is sooo under-rated. I absolutely love it. You can do variations of all kinds, and like you said it's just perfect for testing out new terrain and getting comfortable jumping on the deck. Glad you enjoyed it so much! 💪 Keep shredding with this trick!
Thank you for your amazing content 🙏 I am 35 yrs old and new to learning skateboarding. Thank you for all the trick breakdowns and insight into your skateboarding progression journey. Anything is possible and achievable. Thank you 🙏
This trick is great, very funny and let me feel like I can do "something cool"! Learning ollie by this simple tricks I think is the way to go, perhaps several videos with simple tricks like this up to learn the necessary for the ollie! Regards from Argentina!
Okay, I’ve tried this on a surfskate since I'm trying to work up to an ollie on it and I can do the pop pretty consistently now (while stationary at least). The nose grab part is much more challenging though because my nose is flat and pointed and the board is pretty heavy. Maybe gloves could help though. I've had some success with catching the front truck, too. Anyway, thank you for the tutorial, I've watched it several times now so I thought I'd leave a comment. My sessions are definitely much more fun thanks to you. You break things down so well that the first steps never seem too intimidating to try out.
Ah yeah. I’m sure this could be more difficult on a surf skate given how heavy they are with the little flat nose! But, I’m glad you’re finding some success with it and enjoying the break downs 💪💪
I'm SO glad I found your channel!! :) I've been really struggling with the most basic tricks like ollies and shove-its for a few months now, but you really managed to explain everything a 100 times better than any other skateboarding channel I've encountered so far. You pointed out some of the mistakes I've been making (particularly, holding the board down with my foot while trying to pop an ollie, and also kicking the board forward doing shove-its) and now that I've implemented your advice I'm finally seeing some actual progress!! It's been incredibily helpful, thank you so much!!! :)
Yhis just made me understand the physics behind what I'll need to no comply 🙏 thank you for referring me to this video Sarah. Wish I had you for help when I was 12 instead of 37 😄🙏✌
This is great! I really love having little steps for progression and this will help with the ankle pop that I feel like is really weak right now for me
This is absolutely perfect for what I'm trying to do first day back on a board after a long time, after a couple of decently high caveman drops I felt a thousand times more confident.
Thank you! this helped me stop being frustrated because i cannot land proper ollie. Now i use this trick to practice it and get better pop. I really apprecitate this video, it helped me a lot. You are awesome, and keep up the great work!

That’s awesome to hear! And I feel that. The boneless was, and sometimes still is, a strangely difficult trick to get used to! I hope you can have fun with this one 😄
I totally agree with you. I love this trick as i love the stylish way of picking up a board so inam expeerrimenting it while moving amd sudden pop. Theres lack of tutorial of this trick out there due to the name. Its actually close to a Randja Footplant. I love ur content. Shoutout from Singapore 🇸🇬
Thank you! Glad you like the trick. Yes, I've heard a few people call it the "ranja plant" but I'm not very good with names. I just know that I love this trick😂 I'm glad you've been enjoying the content! My greetings to Singapore 🙋♀️
This is soooo good. And exactly the trick I've been trying to learn for months. I Love it. Thank you for this and for the way you explain it. It's brilliant xx
I’ve watched this twice now and its a fantastic lesson on a trick I’d really like to learn. Love your style points with the swing and the front foot 👍 Trouble is as soon as i get to the skate park i forget all the details ...plus I forget most of the tricks! 🤦♂️I’m like ...what was that trick i watched Sarah doing the other day? ...i think i need a cheat sheet 🤔🛹
Haha thank you! I'm glad you liked it 😃 Now, I also think I've learned the name of this trick. I think it's the Ranja Plant! But, I totally get that. I always decide on tricks to work on and then completely forget them when I get to the park. You aren't alone there 😂 I hope you can get it though! It's a really fun trick.
@@SarahParkMatott it has a name! worked on it for an hour or so in the garage yesterday. I had your video going and i was following along. I got the first half with the pop forward and grab but too chicken so far to add the caveman drop. Luckily i had an old board lying around with buggered bearings that don’t really roll so thats a big help 🤣. Oh and gloves are a must for practicing this one ! Great work Sarah! You’ve got the best skate tutorials on RUclips 👍
This definitely something I need to work on! I've been doing alot of just jumping and running and jumping on the board but next session I'm for sure practicing this. I think I'm ready 🙌🛹
37 years old and haven’t touched a skateboard since I was 15 - your videos are amazing! I’ve been practicing this trick for the last two days, so helpful. As you jump upwards to perform this trick, would you say that your body weight is distributed evenly between both feet or, is your body weight being shifted slightly to your back foot which helps power the pop? Can’t really tell where my centre of mass should be as I’m jumping. Either way, big thanks from Sydney!
I try to keep my weight pretty centered and then after getting my body more off the board through the jump, using my ankle to pop the board down! I've been calling it de-weighting now--didn't have a word for it when I originally made this. But trying to get the weight off, so the board and pop freely! If that makes sense 😃 Welcome back to skateboarding by the way! That's awesome 🙌
This was a trick that I found out on my own. I just wanted to make the caveman more fun and practice grabbing / popping the board. And it turned out it was an actual trick. The ranja plant 😃 It’s really fun once you get the hang of it 💪
Thank you so much for that breakdown! Quick q: what safety gear do you have on in this video? Are those shin-knee guards combo? Or just high socks to hold your knee pads up? My knee pads tend to keep sliding down as a skate regardless as to how tight I wrap the velcro around😢
This is what I mostly use ruclips.net/video/-vaZTcF3AP4/видео.html I'm not sure if I mentioned it. But, the wrap around black shin guards are "the fit guy" shinguards. They aren't connected to the knee pads, but they certainly hold them up. I got them from decomposed skateboarding
I still like my name ‘pistachio’ from my dream, and also rolling footplant to caveman, but I shared this video on a facebook group and one of the guys said that when he was a kid they called this a ‘street sweeper,’ based on the transition trick called the ‘sweeper.’
did u try a 360 fingerflip in this position? just grab the nose, that ur thumb is on the griptape and the other fing touch the deck. then rotate the board. very cool trick
i've been getting decent at cavemanning, and then i step off the board before popping it back into my hand for another round...but i'm definitely having commitment issues when it comes to popping while actually standing on the board. do you know of any intermediate steps to get comfortable with popping and jumping off the board simultaneously? (or did i just answer my question...should i just practice popping and jumping, without also trying to control or catch the board?)
@@SarahParkMatott ok thanks, i'll try it with both feet, then one foot, then one foot + catch...i think that'll be gradual enough to let me build up confidence at each step before going to the next :)
Foot plant?? Definitely not a bomb drop or acid drop which truthfully requires some gnarlienes such as a ledge or what have you. The acid drop was originally developed by Duane Peters the master of disaster so the history behind it changes things. He was doing straight into pools!!! Ughhh! The acid drop was the first trick I learned. We did them off of this loading dock and I was terrified. We pushed each other and we all learned (our little crew). This was 1987 I think??!! Nice ollies!!! Can you do early grabs?
Haha it turns out, it’s called a Ranja plant, but it’s hard to find the name of a trick you’ve never seen before 😂 Someone did let me know a bit ago. Gotta add it to the title 🤔 Yeah, acid drop tutorials are a little confusing because a lot of people were teaching it on flat, which confused me for a while until I realized it was done off of stuff. That’s cool though that you were learning it then. I can’t do any early grabs yet. But I definitely want to when the opportunity to practice presents itself 💪💪
That would be sick! If you want to take this to a bank, I would start by just doing standing a caveman over and over on the slope of that bank (starting with little hops and going up to more of a jump) and then trying this. 💪
Hii Sarah I personally don’t know you but interesting thing i have seen a girl very closed with you face here in Pakistan.. Gestures postures are very same 😍
I think the pop is overrated and the fact that the height comes from the leveling out is the most overlooked. Also the idea that the pop comes after the jump when your leg is straight from the jump you flick down

Thank You!!! You´re the BEST
Thank you! 😃
This is soooo good. And exactly the trick I've been trying to learn for months. I Love it. Thank you for this and for the way you explain it. It's brilliant xx
I’m so glad! This is one of my favorite tricks. Probably my favorite! Good luck getting it! I’m sure you will. 🤘
Thanks!
Note to self - name of the skateboard “ollie-like” trick. Ranja Plant
Glad I found your channel, these are great tutorials and I dig your chill delivery.
Thanks Patrick! Glad you're enjoying the tutorials :D
This definitely something I need to work on! I've been doing alot of just jumping and running and jumping on the board but next session I'm for sure practicing this. I think I'm ready 🙌🛹
Thank you so much!
Just started these yesterday so thank you! Definitely recommend them to people for building a bit of confidence in a fun way.
💯 definitely!
killing it Sarah !
Thank you 😃🙏
I will try it, I think it will be a great help to have a better ollie.
Definitely! It's also a lot of fun to learn anyway :)
BELLISSIMO! Grazie!
Grazie! 🙏🙇♀️
Super helpful! Thanks! 👍
@@SarahParkMatott Awesome, yeah de-weighting makes plenty of sense, all about those light feet..! Thanks for the reply =)
Hey Sarah, can't wait to try this one out!
How did you come across this trick? Is it something you found out on your own?
This was a trick that I found out on my own. I just wanted to make the caveman more fun and practice grabbing / popping the board. And it turned out it was an actual trick. The ranja plant 😃 It’s really fun once you get the hang of it 💪
you're the best tutor ever!
Wow, thank you! 😃
Amazing tutorial. Thanks
Glad you liked it 😃
It's called Ranja foot plant this trick...
Oh awesome! 😃
my instructor also told us to learn this before the ollie.
I love your voice and video contents.
Aw, thank you so much! 😃 I'm glad you liked the video!
It's really cool trick! I'm working on it
SH Park good luck with it! :)
Note to self about the shin guards
Great tutorial keep the videos coming 👊🏼
Thanks!🙏😃
👍 suscribed!
Welcome to the channel🙋♀️
I still like my name ‘pistachio’ from my dream, and also rolling footplant to caveman, but I shared this video on a facebook group and one of the guys said that when he was a kid they called this a ‘street sweeper,’ based on the transition trick called the ‘sweeper.’
That's a pretty cool name too 😃
Wow thanks 👍👍👍
😃😃
did u try a 360 fingerflip in this position? just grab the nose, that ur thumb is on the griptape and the other fing touch the deck. then rotate the board. very cool trick
I have done different flips from there, but haven't tried a 360 flip yet 🙃
Awesome 🤗
i've been getting decent at cavemanning, and then i step off the board before popping it back into my hand for another round...but i'm definitely having commitment issues when it comes to popping while actually standing on the board. do you know of any intermediate steps to get comfortable with popping and jumping off the board simultaneously? (or did i just answer my question...should i just practice popping and jumping, without also trying to control or catch the board?)
You can definitely try that. You could get used to just trying to pop it away from you without catching it--landing back on one foot 🙌
@@SarahParkMatott ok thanks, i'll try it with both feet, then one foot, then one foot + catch...i think that'll be gradual enough to let me build up confidence at each step before going to the next :)
What sort of gloves are you wearing?
not 100% sure, but i believe that trick is called sweeper.
I've heard it called ranja plant quite a bit, but sweeper is a first! Makes a lot of sense. Kind of like sweeping a broom 😂
A good name could be popncave
or Popcorn 😅
Gotta add it to the title 🤔
Yeah, acid drop tutorials are a little confusing because a lot of people were teaching it on flat, which confused me for a while until I realized it was done off of stuff. That’s cool though that you were learning it then.
I can’t do any early grabs yet. But I definitely want to when the opportunity to practice presents itself 💪💪
Would be great to see this on a bank, any tips for that?
That would be sick! If you want to take this to a bank, I would start by just doing standing a caveman over and over on the slope of that bank (starting with little hops and going up to more of a jump) and then trying this. 💪
No-comply caveman is what I've always called it
This was the hidden ollie step 4.5 i just listed wth
but when you swing that shyt past your body like a fs shuv thats buttery af imo
its called a no comply caveman i thing
I've since been told it's called a ranja plant 🤷♀️
(Note to self - no comply caveman)
👌👌👌

Today I met a skateboarder in the parking lot where I was practicing. He did an ollie without the tail touching the ground. WTF? :O
some solid ghost pop 😂

if your YT channel was a stock, i’d invest
😂😂😂
Hii Sarah
I personally don’t know you but interesting thing i have seen a girl very closed with you face here in Pakistan..
Gestures postures are very same 😍
Wow, that is interesting. They say everyone has a twin somewhere 😂
But i have listen everyone has 6 more faces just wow 😅, where are you from?
@@shyaqoob5778 maybe ☺️ I am from the USA.
Hmm
Congrats you have a new fan but not for youtube videos.. i am so impressed coz i am also a skateboarder .
may i have your instagram ?
@@shyaqoob5778 my instagram is written in the video description 😊
I think the pop is overrated and the fact that the height comes from the leveling out is the most overlooked. Also the idea that the pop comes after the jump when your leg is straight from the jump you flick down
