I got my first skateboard about 30 days ago, a present to myself for turning 45, and started teaching myself to ride it. I found your channel a few days later via instagram. Your videos have helped me to make it through this first month of getting my balance back and learning to ride at all. It's so easy to get discouraged by expecting too much of yourself, by absorbing the gatekeeping ideas some skaters have, by internalized ableism that makes you want to quit rather than adapt the sport to your needs. Your small-pieces approach to learning and progressing, and the way you bring it to every video you make, has grounded me and given me a list of things to look forward to. When I told my mom I was learning to skateboard, and described how your approach helps me to fight anxiety and frustration, she told me about the two quarters of intro figure skating she took in college, and how even though her progress was slow she loved practicing figures and movements. She'd never told me about that before! I've showed her your channel. I'm so glad you're making these videos, and I'm sure many more people are benefiting than just those of us who comment. Thanks so much.
First of all, welcome to skateboarding! Second of all, I really get where you're coming from. Skateboarding is the strangest of hobbies as it can actually become very unenjoyable very quickly. So, I'm so glad that you've been enjoying it and resonated with the kind of skate philosophy, breakdowns videos that I've made on this channel. (Super yes to adapting the sport to your needs and ability 💯!) Also, your mom is so cool. I bet figure skating is also really difficult! Really cool you could relate with her on this too. Stoked for you! And excited for your skate journey 🙌
never seen your channel before, this video is legit AWESOME!!!! I’ve been skating for about a year now and have never seen a video as good as this one on the topic. THANK YOU!!!!
Welcome to the channel! Stoked you liked the video so much 😃 I really liked putting this one together too. It's a fun topic to talk about! Keep shredding! 💪
after 3 years I can finally learned 360 spins and end overs I've been trying to get those eversince I picked up my first board. SO personal goal done. finally got my back foot not to touch the floor on my Switchblades
good times. thanks, Sarah! hadn't skated in over 20 years and got back to it using some of these so i could beat all my friend's kids in s.k.a.t.e #appreciated
Hey Sarah! I your channel! Your "engineer mind" is awesome, the way you break the tricks into small pieces. I'm a grandfather learning my way into this, and your videos are really helping. Thanks a lot!!
I’m definitely following your methods. I doubt Kyro could do that many tricks in such a short period of time. My daughter and I are quite impressed. Curious how much time a day you’ve put into this.
haha thank you! 😃 I hope the methods help you with your progress 💪 I actually put a ton of time in in the beginning. During the first 6 months, I was probably skating 6 days a week for almost an hour (which is a lot more doable when focusing on freestyle since there is a lot less impact). But, it was definitely way too much. For the next 6 months, I probably skated 3 to 5 times a week depending on my schedule and how much recovery I needed. I value recovery a lot more now, so I'm taking my sessions one by one 💪
Hey Sarah! I've followed your Instagram for a while but have never seen your RUclips channel before. This video is amazing and really gives me a lot of ideas. I love that you showed all the basic tricks you mentioned but also showed a lot of more advanced variations with them too.
Ay! Bubbleflip. Yeah, really...I think we've followed each other almost from the beginning of my skate journey at least. Glad you liked the video 😃 I figured since most non-ollie trick videos only focused on "easier" tricks, it'd be cool to kind of show the spectrum. That you can do cool, hard tricks without ollies as well. 🙌
Hey Sarah love your break downs. I dont understand how you enter the footplant for a footplant caveman. I cnat work out it you are jumping into a quick tail stall then jumping off or if its a whole different technique. I can roll on my longboard and push off the tail to catch the front end of the board while i run but on a short board it feels really sketch to me. Any tips? Many thanks Bec, Western Australia
Hi Bec! Thank you. I'm really glad to hear that. If it's the trick I am thinking of, I actually have a tutorial for it here ruclips.net/video/vdfoa41ArDE/видео.html If not, let me know. I'm happy to try and help!
Really enjoying watching your videos. Really suprised that you don't have much more subscribers, I'm sure your channel will blow up soon! Thanks for the great tips and keep making the content!
Oh so its called that too? I think it’s also called a ghost flip…at least when riding? funny enough, it’s one of my favorite tricks. No idea why 😂 But thank you! 😃
@@SarahParkMatott Yeah don't take my comment as an authority haha, I just heard some other skaters i know call it that 😁 and yeah it is a rad wee trick to throw in a line!
@@SarahParkMatott i know that there is a ghost ride and a ghost ride kickflip from longboarding which is very similar but involves cross foot madness haha
@@StewartStorrar oh yeah, my friends and I often use incorrect names on purpose in our group chat. Rename the tricks to funnier versions. It’s all about enjoying it in the end💪
@@SarahParkMatott hell yeah! as long as folks know what trick you are describing that's all that matters 🙌😁 good work on the uploads! Watching your content convinced me to start my own skate stuff finally haha - keep up the awesome skating 💯
oh, I thought about trying them. But every time I find some in a store, there aren't any small enough for me 😂 These running gloves have been surprisingly durable though. And actually, I added a little square of trick tape to the thumbs for finger flips. And that's been pretty good!
Love the tricks. Will try to learn them all. Btw.. can I have tips on how to land a shove it?... I have been practicing it but.... i cant seem to land on both feet.. only my front foot lands on the board... appreciate it. Thanks!
Sure, have you seen my tutorial for shove its? I do have some tips in there about the back foot. Often the problem is in jumping. I just answered this question too, so I'll paste the answer here as well :) ou won't have to jump high forever, but it certainly helps in the beginning!
@@SarahParkMatott i will check the vid out. also the tip is noted and thank you very much! You need more subscribers~ Take care edit: also yeah .. heheh i totally have problems the jump and my back foot. once again Thanks!
@@codewolf2834 Well, that's nothing that practice and sometimes just jumping can't fix. I did a ton of knee tuck jumps to get better and bringing my knees up for different tricks. You'll get there. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel :D Good luck with your shove it!
hey, any tips on pop shuvs and how to kickturn on a ramp? i can kickturn on flat but i dont think im comfy enough bending my knees to do so on a ramp, my weight is always thrown forward and i stall or end up bailing, it looks so easy but yet i cant get it 😩 love to hear any tips u have
I do. I have a pop shove it tutorial ( ruclips.net/video/aoCcjQSyUcA/видео.html ) and a kick turning on a ramp tutorial ( ruclips.net/video/ggwLDiDu-Bs/видео.html ). Check those out and if you have more questions, feel free to comment 😊
@@SarahParkMatott wow you have it all!! lol so glad i found your channel. i do have one question after watching your kick turn video. this sounds silly but, when im pushing i usually have my foot a bit behind the bolts (like ollie foot positioning). if im skating and go up a bank and turn, how can i shift my foot a bit more, as i feel like my foot stance might throw me off as im not as squared as you are in the tutorial (yours are on the front bolts). am i overthinking it ? or does this really impact kickturns
@@EpicBeastism Your foot positioning could definitely affect the kick turn based on how comfortable you feel. Typically, the wider (more over the bolts) and squarer your stance is, the more balance you have. So, if you're doing a kick turn with your feet too close together or too angled it might be uncomfortable or hard to turn. It's definitely worth trying to just push up to the ramp with your front foot already over the bolts or closer to the bolts. Or you can wiggle/inch your front foot forward before you get to the bottom of the ramp/bank while riding. But I wouldn't adjust that foot while on the ramp/bank! I hope this helps :D
