Europe is home to some of the oldest, most storied airlines on earth. The likes of British Airways, KLM, and Air France have been around for more than half a century, and maintain a steady dominance in the region. But even so, there’s no European carrier that’s cemented itself more in the cultural Zeitgeist than Ryanair. The Irish carrier didn’t pioneer low cost travel, but they’ve certainly mastered it - offering rock-bottom ticket prices that are truly hard to ignore - and even harder to resist.
For decades, the carrier has remained untouched as the king of European budget travel. But that’s about to change - with an overlooked competitor coming for its crown. And the scary thing for Ryanair, is that this competitor has a very real shot of knocking it off its throne. Let me explain…

Based on industry statistics, Ryanair flew 14.2m passengers in April 2022 with a 91% loading factor, vs Wizz carrying 3.6m passengers with a 84% loading. Comparing 2019 through 2021, Wizz % of Ryanair passengers rose from 26% to 29%, however year to date it has dropped back to 25%. In addition as of the end of December 2021, Ryanair had liquidity of 3.7 Billion Euros Vs Wizzair of 1.4Billion Euros. So indeed prorata to business size, Wizzair has 38% of numberical liquidity of Ryanair, vs 29% of passenger numbers, but this would not seem that much out of kilter. Finally in their financial year to end of March 2022, Ryanair lost 355million Euros vs Wizz at 645million Euros. Ryanair is forecasting a profit rebound for 2023, but Wizzair is still predicting losses. Viewing all of the data over the past 10 years, no doubt Wizzair have grown from a small niche player to the 2nd largest low fares airline in Europe, however again based on more recent data both pre covid, covid and now post covid, the data is not supporting your arguement about Wizzair taking over as Budget airline king from Ryanair anytime in the foreseeable future. Stockprice forecasts for both companies would also not support your case.

I Agree with you. I did a detailed comparison of the financials of both these airlines and Ryanair outperformed Wizz Air in most, if not all of the financial indicators. Wizz Air may have the youngest fleet there is, with strong liquidity and least carbon footprints of all the EU LCCs but still it has a long way to go to take the King head on. West Europe is still Ryanair's bastion of operations and Wizz Air is no where near ousting Ryanair as the biggest LCC of EU

I enjoyed the video. However, I work for one of Wizzair's close competitors and want to correct a few things. Wizzair has high liquidity because the owner of Wizz has a very good relationship with the Hungarian government which essentially bankroll the airline. You mention Ryanair may have its thrown taken away. But last time I checked Ryanair increased its programme this year by 15% and operated over 3000 flights in one day last week alone, which is a record for the airline group. Compared to Wizzair's 800 flights and easyJets 1600 flights. I think Wizzair will need to further increase it's fleet to have any chance of topping Ryanair. I do think however Wizzair will push easyJet very close... Final thing to note is Ryanair hedges fuel and Wizz doesn't. So lets see what happens in the next 18 months....

Wizz Air’s CEO also has good relations with countries on Balkans. They get money for operating some flights from Bosnia, Macedonia and Romania. Also they have a base in Abu Dhabi almost at governmental costs, as well as fully sponsored expansion plans to Saudi Arabia. Josef Varadi (CEO) does really good thing of getting a lot of connections in business and politics. Wizz Air operates less flight also because they don’t make ultra short-haul flights like London - Paris, Barcelona - Majorca, Dublin - Manchester. EasyJet as well. Wizz Air has barely any of these short flight and operate on longer routes. Also they have noticeable amount of 5h+ routes, while Ryanair barely has any. So if comparing PAX*KM, difference will be less significant. Also Wizz Air is the European fastest growing airline, having over 400 orders which are delivered rapidly, while Ryanair only around 150 and after getting about 60 MAX 200 which were built but grounded due to MCAS issues now deliveries to Ryanair are slower. Wizz Air will still not catch up Ryanair, except if there is some crisis, badly affecting Ryanair but not Wizz Air but they will get big enough to take away some destinations from Ryanair.

The tax structure in the US prevents airlines from offering tickets as cheap as the ultra low cost carriers in Europe.
Airports in Europe are privately owned for profit. In the US airports are operated by local government and they are cash cows. The taxes you see on your ticket are just for what you are charged. The airports also charge the airlines and the airline passes that on to you.
Hotel taxes, entertainment taxes and airport fees are ways to raise money without upsetting voters because most of it is paid by visitors.

Wizzair isn't all success though. In 2020 they tried to enter the norwegian domestic market, counting on then-struggling Norwegian to go bankrupt, and being able to undercut competitor prices. This failed spectacularly though as they more or less got bullied out of the country by boycotts from companies, municipalities, and even the prime minister, in protest against Wizzair's horrible labour and union policies. Also, their inexperienced pilots couldn't handle northern norwegian winter conditions, leading to many flights in a short period of time getting cancelled or being forced to turn back to Oslo, when competitors landed as normal.
In summary, because of Norwegian not folding as expected, extremely bad PR even before they got started, and loss of confidence due to cancellations, Wizz had to pull out of the market only 8 months after they started.

Living in eastern Europe i have used both Ryanair and Wizz and for those prices i think they are absolutely fine. Every once in a while you can find crazy deals like 66 euros for a Bucharest-Tenerife round trip with Wizz(that's a 6 hours flight). Or a 10 euro Bucharest-Milano roundtrip with Ryanair. Both companies are fine for the prices you pay, however you need to pay for checked in bags, handbags (anything bigger than a rucksack) , food, water and seats(if you want to sit next to your partner/friend etc). Leg room is smallish, the seats don't recline and flights never leave on time but they arrive on time (99% of the time).

It also matches the legroom of some long haul carriers such as British Airways, and Aeroflot (until it was killed by sanctions, it used to have lots of 29 and 30" planes).

I personally liked flying with wizzair and my recent flight from charleroi to warsaw was safe and pleasant. Lovely Ukrainian crew on board. Having a younger fleet does not always = better profit. This is a common misunderstanding and Coby has fallen for it.
Younger fleet normally = more aicraft repayments or lease payments. These payments eat into the profit margin.
Older aircraft may burn more fuel (to be honest the difference here is in the single digits of percentage) but they are bought and paid for by in large. Meaning no lease payments or repayments.
American Airlines and Delta kept their 30+ year old DC9s and MD80s in their fleet many years longer than expected because they were paid for and needed only maintenance spent on them. They found this was more cost effective than continually purchasing new aircraft that came will training, parts, lease/payment and other sundry expenses.
Then you have to consider just how much the airline is actually paying for their aircraft. M'OL has stated on several occasions he "r*ped" Boeing for his fleet. Meaning he is paying very likely less for his 737s than anyone else and will almost certainly be paying less per 737 Max than Wizz will be paying for their A320/A321NEOs.
The numbers are not known to me. But I would hedge a bet that Ryanair still has an operational cost advantage over Wizz and will still be able to undercut them on any competing route.
In summary, your title is misleading and at this time factually incorrect.

The advantage Wizzair have is the fact that they have sometimes lower prices and they are conveniently situated in a region full of travel eager population and maybe their more aggressive approach in Middle East and Eastern Europe. My flights cost £200 (Poznan in Poland to Bristol), with reserved seats, priority boarding and 10kg carry on plus another small bag. That's not as cheap as it was pre-Covid, but what is? I've always considered RA to be a bus. No frills, not the cleanest, but with amazingly quick turnarounds and usually early to arrive. I frequently fly with Wizz Air. They are cheep and I am able to book tickets for return trip for only around 80-100$. It means a lot, because I really can't afford to fly around Europe if the prices are 300-400$ for return trip.
But low cost has it's limits. You can only fly with backpack, any additional luggage is premium. That is not problem for myself, since I can travel for 4-5 days with only a backpack, but I understand the people who can't. Even then, the price for luggage is not too bad (around 50$), but then it's not as cheep. Some other things are also different - you need to check-in online, because airport check-in are not free (which is fine with me, I check-in online anyway), you don't get anything for free during the flight (snacks, water), and (and this is the biggest flaw for me personally) the seats are fixed and can't be moved backwards.
But for 1,5 / 2 hour flight it's ok, it's cheep and that is what matters for myself.

Hi Coby, great video, I didn't know this aspect of strong liquidity!
From a customer perspective I can tell you that flying with Wizz is a much more comfortable experience. First being the Airbus a bigger plane it suffers less turbolences, so the "fasten belt" sign appears at least 60% less than in a Ryanair flight. Secondly the crew is much more silled and less stressed than their Ryanair colleagues. Furthermore Wizz is not a bazar with announcements every two minutes about stratch cards, perfumes and so on like Ryan and this makes a HUGE difference! on the quality of flight!!!
...and yes you're right prices are mostly lower, and Wizz have also a fidelity card which reduces the price by 10€ and costs 30€ for a year....so with the first trip is almost paid.
P.s A couple of constructive crriticism... You showed the Mexican flag instead of the Italian (6'22''), secondly Alitalia doesnìt exist anymore (now it's ITA Airways)

But also if Wizz had the more effective Fleet, they have a problem with fuel:
Ryanair set long term contracts to save them
    Fuel for preset prices.
WizzAir buys most of their Fuel right on the spot wich made them more subsceptible for fuel price change as we see now as a result of the war.
So it’s not easy for Wizz to keep competitive with Ryanair at the moment, also if they’re really well backed up in cash by Indigo Partners.

Ryan air always does great for me tbh I fly from stansted never had issues when I visit friends in Sweden where as I’ve had family fly wizz and have terrible service one got stuck in Croatia because of wizz! But I think the best airlines I’ve flown is virgin Atlantic to Las Vegas and finnair had one of the coolest planes as it showed the northern lights as a display on the ceiling

The other opportunity wizz has is Ryanairs business model has no brand loyalty built in - they treat passengers like crap and are very slow to refund or compensate for delays if at all even where legally required to do so and whenever challenged their obnoxious little leprechaun CEO pops up and says “it’s cheap what do you expect?” - I can actually imagine an announcement on Ryanair along the lines “in the event of an emergency evacuation swipe your credit card to release the seatbelt!” If a competitor like wizz shows up with good timekeeping and similar (if not better routes and prices then nobody who normally flies Ryanair is going to think twice about jumping ship and oh yeah, wizz aren’t flying a fleet of planes tainted by a succession of crashes caused by manufacturing defect which is still pretty fresh in the public consciousness.

Brand loyalty? It is a budget airline!! If you want a "free" drink then pay more to fly with one of the older "national" carriers. Incidentally, Ryanair has never had a fatal accident, which can't be said of the other airlines...

I flew both Ryanair and EasyJet at the past. I felt very uncomfortable with Raynair cabin crew in terms of safety professionalism throughout the flight (and I had my share of short and long-haul flying over the years to judge). EasyJet on the other hand was always exceptionally good even at times of “crisis” such as bad weather and strikes etc. That said post pandemic I think we are at a new era of air travelling for both budget Carries and some legacy ones too!

Wizz pilots and other employees are saying that Wizz air is dangerous on account of pushing them too hard with extra shifts. They have also had strikes re low pay and harsh conditions. It will not take over Ryanair unless it upgrades their internal standards. Ultra cheap prices wont last.

I mostly fly with easyJet, they have an extended network out of EAP and in my opinion are a real budget carrier, you get what you pay for. Ryanair is rather a cheat airline, staff seems not very motivated and they often use secondary airports, making the overall journey often longer than with easyJet. I only once flew with Weez and was pleasantly surprised about their work attitude. I really am looking forward for Weez dethroning Ryanair😇

Wizz Air has been growing fast in the last year. I usually choose Ryanair for short flights, but recently flew with Wizz Air for the first time, and I would say Wizz Air products and services are cheaper. Wizz Air had better legroom and the cabin crew was super friendly. My flight with them to Abu Dhabi from Athens was around 30-40 EUR each way. I would say Wizz Air flight tickets might be more expensive, but the planes and service are better.

I’ve flown budget airlines for years, Wizz was by far the worst. Delays, rude flight attendants, filthy aircraft. My favourites are EasyJet who I’ve never had any problems with, but who tend to be priced slightly higher than Ryainair and Wizz.

I remember before COVID Wizz air established a base in Malmo next to Copenhagen. When Ryanair established a base in Copenhagen Wizz moved away from a lot of the routes ryanair flew from the more centrally located airport. This goes to show that Wizz was scared of Ryanair before the pandemic and exploited the situation to it’s advantage.

Literally, if you are willing to get from point A to point B and you major concern is the price, then it doesn't matter if it's Ryanair, WizzAir, EasyJet. All of them have the same restrictions in hand-baggage and the same "service". The only thing that changes is the colors and the aircraft manufacturer. Btw if the flight is delayed on the ground (like max. 30mins) then somehow the flights gets on-time on the destination. The pilots seem to care for the on-time reputation and try to fly are fast as possible!

I think what is importent to note ist, that Wizz currently does not allow general tarif paiment and most importantly they do not allow unions.
But at the beginning it was the same for Ryanair, later they had to allow unions but they adopted to it. If wizz really wants to expand in Europe and the EU they need bases in western Europe like Germany Spain, netherlands etc. So they will also face these cost at some point by which Ryanair will have mastered avoiding other cost.
The most important thing holding back Ryanair at the Moment ist their low order for 737max, they could easily take a couple of hundred more in the coming years.
Then their ist the A321neo which truly is a very importan assed of Wizz to drive costs down, but if Ryanair can agree witch Boeing on good -10 deals they will also hate the 200+ seat plane.
I currently belive that while Wizz will grow rapidly Ryanir will still grow and if they get more planes to put pressure an Wizz in markets like poland they will still dominate.
Side note: at my small lokal Airport in Germany Wizz opened a base 2020, they closed it after just one year because it was to expensive. More importantly they planed to launch direct competition to Ryanair on some routes, they never started because the costbase at wich Ryanair operated was just superior.
(also at vienna they just bailed to Ryanair wich decided to force them by launching dozend routes at super low prices, yes wizz ist still there but they stoped expanding, while Ryanir is know setting its sight on Austrian to completly dominate vienna)
As much as I do not like some of the practices of Ryanir and their handling of staff and saleries, they are just the master of low cost, their profit yield far exeed that of any european airline and as consolidation in Europe continues they will only get stronger. Long term the EU market will be dominated by Ryanair, LHgroup, AF&KLMgroup, IAG, Wizz and maybe if they surwive Easy jet.

I flew every European major LCC and my preferable is Ryanair for legroom and mostly lowest prices. Wizz Air is oftentimes more expensive (every with Wizz Discount) and Easy Jet is barely ever cheap. Over LCCs in Europe are too local and have small market. For business model. Wizz Air is expanding rapidly, getting new A321neo almost every 2 weeks, I oftentimes fly on aircraft which were just delivered to Wizz Air (MXP - BUD), once there was even a plane with less than 20 takeoff-landing cycles!
In addition to what is said about Wizz Air advantages, because of more modern fleet they also pay lower taxes for ecological and noise emissions which will get higher and higher in Europe overtime. Wizz Air also gets governmental subsidies, most noticeably on Balkans and in the UAE, while Saudi government encourages them to expand their operational network there.

What most of the commentators below do not realise is that before Ryanair appeared in the mid-80s, it cost £600 to fly from London to Dublin (return) with either BA or Aer Lingus, and that was a lot of money in those days! The "national flag" carriers like BA, Lufthansa, KLM, SAS and Air France were horrendously expensive, really only for business class. Holiday-makers used charter flights. Thanks to Ryanair and the other budget carries who followed, people can move around Europe like never before.

O wizzair is def my fav cus 1st of all its the first plane i flew and it was exciting and i have to say that wizzairs colour pallet is way more gentle then ryanair. I mean its like that yellow is just attacking you on the oppodite the purple shaded of wizzair are just tucking you into a good flight especialy with their new neo version with those beutiful seats i actually have a plane booked from the netherlands(well germany cus thats the closest airport) to poland and i am excited and i have recently flown with ryanair aswell cus i was going on a short holiday ro england and now i will get to mske the comparison even better but as i said the colour pallet is already a huge deal for me. (I hope its gonna be a neo).

I think there is a few issues here Coby that you missed. First of all while MO'L is still in power ryanair are just as much hoarders as wizz, in fact they have had cash reserves for years and even when oil sank and they had already bought their fuel everyone laughed and Mo'L basically said everyone else is still losing. Secondly MO'L is a brute which makes him a great leader. He will do everything and anything to undercut the competition. He has no fear and loves the challenge. He has done this several times before where he'll leave an airport if he doesnt get his way. move to the one down the road get cheaper prices and then under cuts the comp. Wizz will put a fight no doubt and could win some routes. But With Michael at the helm he would rather lose money on those routes just to starve the competition . He did it to Aer lingus and Easy jet in ireland. and when they were gone the price rose and the cycle started again and third, the Grants that they got well its been paid off already also he will play the game with boeing to get way better deals than the comp. I think unless he trains his successor to be a brute thats when wizz will get the upper hand .

*Relatedly, vis-à-vis ticket-price comparisons between Ryanair and Wizz Air, the following is worth keeping in mind: even though the 'entry-level' ticket-price with 'Wizz' may be attractive, once One moves beyond the realm of 'small-bag under the seat in-front' territory, the 'Wizz' cabin and checked -bag prices are significantly highly than the equivalent bag-prices, with Ryanair - this is significant.

My main reason for preferring Wizzair over Ryanair is the airport selection. I don't gain much by flying "direct" if I then have to drive for over an hour to get home from Ryanair's airport in the middle of nowhere. Wizzair generally flies to better positioned airports in my opinion.
