      I just recently stopped biting my nails, they look so much better! My cuticles aren't ripped and messy anymore, and now it's easier to paint them. All I have to do is occasionally file them with a crystal file so they look clean. Idk why but one day I just stopped biting and ripping them. I just stopped..

      @michellebee2422 6 лет назад +731

      It is called the mid-Atlantic or transatlantic accent. It's wasn't native to any part of America (though you are correct in hearing both American and British, it was a sort of mix) but rather was taught to upper class and theatre people. Basically it was a quick way to distinguish an upper class person who went to a prep school from everyone else. 😊

      Michelle I Yeah, Katherine Hepburn is a perfect example of that. At first, I thought she was British, but found out she was from Connecticut (I think). She had a speech coach who trained her to speak that way. They focused a lot on proper diction.

      It's really not. Astringent is drying and bad for your skin. Adding friction and rubbing it with towel roughly is also bad for your skin. I think the advices about behaviour and how to appear graceful are good, but the ones about skincare is horrid.

    • @ohaunnameyer2185

      Anastasia Ye you do realize that there are gentle astringents such as witch hazel and rose water right?

    • @thereadingsylph
      @thereadingsylph 6 лет назад +15

      +Anastasia Ye yeah its true, the skincare ones are bad. however i think that's why we have to be really grateful, the research on skincare and the products they offer has really grown in the last decades. i didnt think most active ingredients that we have now for acne exists in the 1940s. let alone all the different things we have now for hyperpigmentation, anti aging, exfoliation, etc.

    • @HereIAm247
      @HereIAm247 6 лет назад +25

      Maleficent there should definitely be a balance between personality and appearance. But I don't think we have enough focus on either. People are busy saying 'just be yourself', often as an excuse to not make an effort. And people think beauty is a formula that have to be achieved, a certain look. Really, we should focus on making the most of ourselves, both our personality/skills, and our appearance (meaning good grooming, and making the most of what we have, and carrying ourselves well).
      I think a lot of people are insecure, because they are taught to live up to a certain standard, without knowing how/thinking that they never can. This makes them feel very insecure and unattractive, and as a result, they obsess even more about it. They are also told to look perfect, but they can't look like they tried too hard. This also makes them much more insecure in their social interactions, which can cause people to behave negatively.

    • @mac9733
      @mac9733 6 лет назад +28

      Raquel R I still think some people do! But I think it has more to do with how many people carry themselves today. Many lack in good posture, charm (the ability to make someone feel comfortable with you), and frankly some even lack in good hygiene. These girls/women seem to focus a lot on that, as well as practice it all the time whilst during this era, it's common for many people to not do so. Which basically does effect your appearance as Mary pointed out.

      My mom ws ON it! Stand up straight. Why are you wiggling? Don't swing your arms when you walk. Chin up. Speak clearly. Sit gracefully. Stop tugging at your clothrs. Stop touching your hair. Make eye contact. Stop tlalking. Stop interupting. No one wants ro her about that. Offer the lady a seat. Serve the tea. Use your napkin...keep your knees together. Pull your dress down...stand still. Wait til everyone's served...pass your plate to the person next to you. When my mom entered a room, it was as if Marilyn Monroe had arrived. Wish I had some of her grace.

    I grew up in the 50s,early 60s. I remember going to a party at age 17, in a borrowed (from my sister) "merry widow", a combination strapless bra & waist cincher undergarment. This was just before the mini skirts came in. I bought a book at 13 called "glamour for girls". The advice in it was very much like this film. We were encouraged to look neat & ladylike, something that seems extinct with the kids now.

      We had home economics (is it called this in english?) in my school. I'm 19. I can cook, I am able to take care of my own laundry, I know how to clean a house, I was teached the right table etiquette. Its important to know those things. But I also have tattoos, piercings and dress like I want to dress. My body, my home is all my business and people have to learn that. You dont have to know how to Cook and all those things...but it makes your life much easier.

      American society is more acceptably racially integrated nowadays; you see a lot of mixed-race individuals and multiracial communities. The 1940s had a segregated society, so I guess maybe that's why.

      Please. Don't take this as racism,
      They are from the European race. Today there a lot more brown people in white countries and so many white Europeans have tan now (men are normally natural tan, women fake tan) so young people today are not familiar with what Europeans real appearance is.

    • @traci0dee
      @traci0dee  7 лет назад +27

      This was filmed originally in color. There would have been no economical reason for anyone to take an ephemeral film, such as this one, that hasn't even been restored and then colorize it.

      Not really. People could get darker if they wanted to.. but pale was desired at the time. They kept their skin away from the sun the best they could and often made it a bit paler with powder. Tanning and wanting a sunkissed look came in at the late 40s and 50s.

      traci0dee I do not believe it was filmed in color. It may have been colorized after the original filming before being shown. Too much of it is black and white. I am now*no.expert. Just my observations. Thanks for responding.💐

    timeless tips but remember that nothing trumps what makes you as an individual feel beautiful, comfortable and happy. if you like your hair, clothes, makeup, nails, whatever a certain way that goes against the overall beauty standard, that's 100% fine. don't feel obligated to fit into the cookie-cutter.

      It was definitely available. Eye makeup was very popular in the 1920s. But you're right; teens weren't encouraged to wear a ton of makeup unless it was for a special occasion, like prom.
