I don't own an electric car, my next one will likely be the gti egolf hybrid thing. I do find it strange how people comment that you have to charge it fullly before it can be used, surely it's the same as a normal car whereby if you are a bit skint and can only chuck a fiver in you just put a fiver in the tank - with an e-car surely you just unplug it when you need to go out and about and then re-plug it at the destination or when you return....more convenient as you aren't going out of your way to top it up or fill it up (so to speak)
That's a good point James. Question is how much do you put in to allow for unforeseen eventualities? Remember the days when it snows and people get stuck on motorways? Difference between half and full range can be life or death (by hypothermia). Or say you plan to charge at your destination so you don't need much but get there and it's in use or inop or iced, what do you do? As charging becomes quicker this will be less of an issue but for early adopters this has to be something to consider. Thanks very much for commenting, it's all good debate.
Interesting how you note that the lack of engine sound can lead you to go far faster than intended! I suspect this will lead to more EVs in future going down the “fake sound” route. One inside for the audible feedback the driver needs, and another outside to comply with pedestrian legislation. As long as it isn’t an MP3 recording of a V8, EVs should absolutely make cool sounds!
I just like the Golf, an everyman type of car, always well built, ok can be classed as a bit boring, but it's just a really good drivers car, slick gearbox, great choice of engine, a real steady Eddie, does everything ever so well, it is so east to have a go at them, but check out how many 15 year old Golfs still going strong, always a fan, Electric! yet to be convinced, but they are getting better
I just traded in my 2016 e-golf last July after 3 years of ownership. It only had 83 miles range (53 miles with 25% reserve). That was how it was driven. The battery degraded only 10% after 34K miles. We are now back to all ICE car fleets, as sub 200 mile range is not acceptable unless you have a cross country back up vehicle. The e-golf is a no-compromise car, considering it has been around since 2015. Range is it’s only negative.
I have a 2016 e-Golf and I live in Las Vegas. I love it! It has more than enough range for my in-town driving. The A/C is better than the Mercedes C-Class Sport. It is near-zero maintenance.; no oil changes, no oil or transmission leakage. The is the most flawless car I have ever owned. I have always used rental cars for long trips. I think most people who choose to go electric will never go back. Never, never choose a hybrid, they are the worst of two worlds.
The car has the discover Nav Pro which enables you to have the Sat Nav displayed on both screens. This is also the same if you spec the Discover Pro in the GTI or R models too.
If your using to listen to radio , Apple car play , air con then the range becomes shorter - is that right ? I don’t want to be restricted of what I can use while driving just to get a longer range
Carplay will be minimal but any electrical consumers especially a/c will kill range. Heated seats, lights (that’s why it has efficient LEDs), wiper etc all have a part.
I do like this car, a fully electric car would suit me right now, I only work a few miles away, the car park I use has a few charge points, but if I were to change jobs fully electric could suddenly become a problem as I don't have a driveway. It's a shame there are still a lot of downsides to electric cars.
If you can charge at work then not charging at home is OK. Problem is, what if everyone wants to charge at work? Say there aren't enough charge points for people to sufficiently charge to get back home, even with vacating the space once full? It's a very complicated situation, just hoping we see swift progress in addressing all the many issues so consumer confidence is strong enough to support the market.
@@volkswizard well said. Where I work, the spaces are for cars charging only, in reality, I see the same cars parked there all day everyday fully charged as if it were reserved parking. That's another problem that will need to be figured out.
Im not happy with no spare wheel. The puncture may not be fixable with gunk. Breakdown trucks are having to consider carrying all sorts of spece savers, or take longer to respond, as they search for the right sized wheel. I dont think its an improvement. Nor are electric handbrakes, imo. Rant over.
Can anyone tell me why almost every egolf I have looked at with under 10k miles have cuts to the sidewalls on their tyres. Every single one has it! Even with both types of alloy. Why is this the case?!
Happy to go with a hybrid for my next car while the EV charging infrastructure develops. If we are looking at these vehicles to be economical then should performance be limited to extend range? Isn’t that primarily the function of them over combustion? Thanks for the video. Really informative.
Looking very permanent judging by VW''s investment in them. Hybrid is the stop gap. Yes, e-Golf is for people who don't want to make a statement about being eco like the relatively inefficient hybrid Prius
I am guessing the price of topping up with electric ⚡️ will increase once a lot more people go electric ⚡️, I can’t see it being cheap to fill up for the long term
Definitely one to watch. I’m betting on road tax being scrapped and road charging coming in based on GPS tracking. Negates the need for a tax on the fuel which will be tricky to apply as domestic electricity is 5% tax, petrol/diesel is around 70!
Arif Ramzan electric probably won’t go up a lot to be honest, but mark my words, I bet they will sell cheap electric but it will take hours to charge, and they’d sell expensive electric that will charge your car in minutes/30mins for like £5 a minute or something lol 😂
Hi Andrew, do u know of any good independent VW garages in south east or west london? need a full service on my mk 6 gti including dsg service and VW prices are a little steep. thanks 👍🏼
Great review as always Andrew..Just ti put out there is also a Government Grant which pays £500 off a Home charging Point installation. I played £279 and the grant covered the other £500. You can charge the GTE is just 1 hr 15 mins and around 4-5 hours on a typical 7Kw charging point for the Egolf
Really good balanced review . You highlight the advantages and disadvantages well. I will be getting a new car next year but it won’t be an ev as the disadvantages for me outweigh the advantages by a fair margin.
I drove the e-golf as a courtesy car for when my GTI was getting sorted.. I mean it was fun the electric car, but it’s definitely not for me! Lol I mean if I ever owned an electric car it would have to be a Tesla.
Great review Andrew - would love to try one of these as we inch towards electric power and would be great if VW gave you a long termer to test out real in world use :) hint hint VW press team
Ha ha, we can but try! I'd definitely live with one for a bit but would need to get a charge point installed as the 3 pin charging is a bit laborious but I suppose not impossible.
All being well, yes. My postal address will be Leamington Spa but not actually in Leamington Spa. There is a Tungsten silver 5 door Up !GTI in the village though :)
@@volkswizard Good for you. I know how these things can drag out and sometimes fall apart at the last minute. The 5 door Tungsten silver one isn't mine (P1 LYP). I'm in deepest West Cornwall. No plans to sell it but I've only covered 1,500 miles in 8 months! Are prices hardening now dealer stock seems to have been shifted?
I know electric cars are the future and environmentally speaking rightly so... but they just leave feeling a little cold. My ‘petrolhead’ days are clearly numbered :-(
There will still be petrol cars around so don't worry, electric for the mundane day-to-day which is what a lot of peoples' motoring solely consists of is perfectly, just have something 'dirty' for weekends👍

Probably the only VW I would buy, the E Golf, I have a 2017 VW Jetta.

Thanks for the ownership feedback Charles, didn’t even know the car was sold in US. 👍
Can you drive it from Vegas to Phoenix AZ or drive it from Vegas to St George Utah?
The car has the discover Nav Pro which enables you to have the Sat Nav displayed on both screens. This is also the same if you spec the Discover Pro in the GTI or R models too.
Thanks Steve for clarifying that
I have this set up in my GTE 7.5 and have the Nav pro with dual screen Sat Nav.

What was it’s miles per kWh ?
The underbonnet view is very unusual indeed - all looks a bit homemade!
Cheers for the vid, e-Golf is a solid car with few interior compromises. Prefer this to the ID
ID.3 is rear wheel drive though, and if you've seen the Taycan drift video you will know what I am thinking ;)
Electric cars a permanent solution or just a stop gap? Nice to see a normal looking looking electric car!

R-line H H the government and the petrol ⛽️ companies would need to get the £ they would lose if more electric was on the road .
The government can’t increase the cost directly as you can make electricity yourself from solar panels for example.

Try APS of Brackley www.autops.co.uk Not local but worth the trip 👍
Try AmD at Unit 10 Monument Way W, Woking GU21 5EN Phone: 01483 726 001
Would love to see the Cupra Born next. Seems it ticks the boxes you referred to back then. Great content as always!

Great info Steve, thanks. When I move I'll be getting one fitted and then I can ask Audi for an E-tron loan car

I’ll take the R/GTI 👌🏼✅ If you’re in the city this would be chaos though
£5? Should be £1.50 at home if you have a drive...
Love your videos and your point of view !

If only I’d planned for the medical emergencies
Call an ambulance pal.
Still prefer to get the 2 litre diesel preferably the gtd
