Now that was quite helpful for us folks who have older fig trees in pots -- I would never have thought to make those pebble channels for the water. Thank you!

Loved the video! Thank you so much! Would be great to hear more about how to start, feeding and watering as well! Very excited to see that I don’t need to root prune every second year as they recommend here in BC.

I moved my container fig indoors during the winter but kept it in a room temperature. It started growing leaves and looked nice and healthy throughout the winter.. in early spring the leaves started having brown spots, it took too long for me to realise it had been infested by spider mites. I sprayed it too late it seems. I have since moved it outside as it is warm enough now where i live.. could anyone advise please? Will my fig survive this and is there any chance it will still fruit this year regardless the loss of leaves? I am gutted 😥

What is the minimum container size needed to grow dwarf figs? I would like to plant one on my patio.

I’m finding out the hard way that you need to work up to 10 to 15 gallons. I have several in 5 gallon pots where the fruit would not ripen. Even when watering every day. I’ll have a new plan for next year.

I was thinking of using for my potted hardy figs: 10% shredded pine mulch, 10% perlite, 20% potting mix and 60% coco coir. Then adding 10-10-10 fertilizer if ever needed. Any suggestions on my ratios here or elimination of a medium? I plan to transplant into the ground next year

Hi Joseph, we checked with our horticulturist and we think that mixture should work just fine as long as you pay careful attention to watering so as not to over or underwater. Happy planting!

Hello sir, thank you for sharing your knowledge! What size of a pot can be used to let the fig tree grow out its entire life in? Thanks!

Several factors will depend upon how frequently a plant may need to be repotted.
The climate it will be grown in can affect how quickly a plant may become root bound in the pot it is grown in. In colder climates these plants may need to be moved into an unheated garage to overwinter the plants. In those colder climates the growing season will be shorter and the plants may be able to live in that pot a bit longer.
The soil used in the container will need to be well drained with some moisture holding capacity. As you saw in the video the longer plants are grown in a container, their root mass will become so dense it may be hard to keep enough moisture on the root ball to sustain the plant.
Rain and moisture may also play a factor in how quickly the soil may dry out in a particular pot. And even the type of pot can have something to do with how long the plant can stay in the same pot.
Last, the variety of plant you want to grow in a container will dictate the ultimate size of pot needed as the more dwarf plants would be able to to live in a bit smaller pot than the larger varieties for longer periods. It seems that the Violette de Bordeaux' fig is the smallest one we have staying in that ten foot or less range. A selection like this could probably do very well in a 45 gallon pot for many years as long as food and water are supplied as needed to keep that plant happy.
You might want to check with your local extension office to see if they have suggestions for the best cultivar of Figs to grow in your immediate area in a container - it is always good to find out does best right in your area.

I live in Ontario, zone 6. I kept a fig tree that was a gift with figs on it in a container. The fig tree arrived in July, and was placed outdoors until October brought cool weather. I moved it to my 3 season unheated sunroom. The leaves began dropping and I watched the room temperature so the tree did not freeze. I moved it indoors anytime the temp dropped, especially at night. By Dec. I had to bring it indoors. my whole house is finished and I have no garage. I put it under my skylight. By the end of Jan it put on a foot of new growth on each branch and leafed out.
Its nice and green but can I expect figs? The person who gave it to me has a greenhouse and thinks not because its warm already in February. What would you do in my place? Thanks

Build a $ 50,000 unheated garage that way they stay dormant then pull them out in the spring.

How is your fig? Cant you just leave it in the sun room all winter. Let the leaves drop let it go dormant. Put it outside in April may.

hi, is this channel/gravel technique better than just root pruning?

    • @jeffdinslage8533
      @jeffdinslage8533 4 года назад +1

The gentleman in the video has been growing many different kinds of fruit trees in containers in California for over 30 years. He is kind of funny in that he tries all different kinds of things to best maintain the plants. Root pruning and placing them back into a good soil mix works well also. What he is trying to do is to get the water from his irrigation into the root ball as they do make a dense mass of roots that sometimes the water may be shed from instead of easily soaking into the root mass.

    • @nickka2009
