- This video explains the 4 main types of rock climbing: bouldering, top rope, sport, and trad. I also briefly explain aid, mixed, ice, and alpine at the end. This video is aimed at the beginner rock climber wondering what all these different terms are.

You would think that there would already be many videos online answering this question. Thank you for clearly breaking it down for beginners while forgoing all the jargon!
+Boom Jiggy Thanks for watching! Glad it helped
Four years later, and this is still the case. I was thinking the same thing -- had long wondered how some mountain climbers seem to climb in what seem to be preestablished paths or how the anchor would already be at the top as they're climbing, so I was just searching like crazy on RUclips for some explanation and examples surrounding this, but virtually nothing. This helped a LOT. Thank you!!
I just had my first rock climbing class today and I'm stoked, thanks a lot for the info!
Awesome! Welcome to the sport and thanks for watching the video. Glad it helped!
Great video! Thanks for the intro. I've been watching a lot of videos, not getting all the lingo.
Glad you like it!
This deserves way more views so good
Super super helpful information! Thank You!!!
Thanks Lauren!!
Excellent video dude, straight forward & clear explanation, really helps. Thank you.

7 years later and you're still answering every single comment.
That's dedication. :-)
Ha! I try. Thanks for noticing :)
Very informative.
Thanks man, this was so good!
@PewseyClimbing It's rockclimberlife. RUclips won't let me post the link..
i've only have experience on climbing on top of my wife :-) this is going into a next level :-)
whats a free solo or deep solo or deep water solo or idk what they are called
free solo is climbing without rope or other protection. Deep water solo (DWS) is free soloing above a body of water, so if you fall, you end up in the water and not hitting the ground (much nicer).
(much nicer). LOL
Ugly drawing but good explaination
I'm no artist..haha
Thank you! You really helped me out! Visited my first bouldering gym and was confused with all the types of climbing
Bouldering 0:50
Top Rope 1:43
Sport 2:12
Trad 5:27
I'm too old to start climbing but I love this!
The only other questions I had after watching were what is free climbing and what is free solo climbing.
My question is how did it feel to make love to a pie?
If I’m not mistaken free climbing is climbing without a rope and free solo is without a rope or partner
@@sleekostrich4367 no this is wrong, free climbing is climbing with ropes for protection only and not to aid the route, free solo is climbing without any ropes
Totally beginner question what really is a pitch
Essentially a half of a rope length or a natural break in the climb. A natural stopping point.
thank you for the kind explanation! SUPER EASY to understand!
thanks for watching!
you forgot to mention solo climbing.....
it's just free climbing without a rope. or bouldering really high. however you want to look at it :)
Great video! Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I was getting a little confused searching the internet, but you are a great teacher and speaker!
best explanation video i’ve seen.
Glad it was helpful!
Can a belay person climb behind the lead guy and still be safe or do they need to stay in the ground?
They will need to be belayed by the leader up top. Called a "top belay".
@@GifZafred so no way to climb without a person on the top or bottom?
Nice vids man ! FUCK this is 8 years ago holy smokes
That's not climbing....that's hiking with a rope. :D
Great video man, well informed now. Exited to get into trad.
You didnt mention speed climbing at all...
yep!
Thank you!
thanks for watching!
Free solo
gif....great video. As a 70 year old guy learning the ropes so I can climb the mast on my boat I have been totally confused by this topic. NOW, I get it!! I am using ascenders and a grigri in order to reach the mast top so no belayers, just a restrained line. Thanks again..
Awesome Greg! So glad this helped and thanks for watching!
Really informative from someone considering rock climbing. Thanks!
In a top belay scenario would the belayer be tethered into the anchor?
you forgot tree climbing
thanks for this. makes sense now
Simple and to the point. Great!
I can manage the audio quality.
thanks!! this video is super old so yes, audio quality is bad "back in the day"
@583270118 Thanks for the feedback! I'll keep 'em coming :)

I've been climbing cell phone towers for awhile now, and have slowly started getting into rock climbing. I appreciate the reviews on harness's , random information, and clarification videos!

Excellent video 👍👍
What about the type of climbing where it is the same wall everytime, and it's just about getting a good time. I don't know what it's called, but i think it's speed climbing.
+iMagZ z yes speed climbing is a specialized (competition based) form of climbing. They are top roping during speed climbing competitions.
Excellent. I tried to have this conversation with my mother today while walking, it didn't go so well. You and your white board are the perfect embellishment, thanks!
Madi Donald Thanks so much for watching!
So if we have our cliff....
nice Video dude! :) liked and subbed
Thanks Albert!
@ladieu1 glad I could help!
my dude, your a godsend
Hi there just the video I was looking fir many many thanks. One thing I don't grasp is on a traditional climb how do you retrieve your equipment you placed on the way up ? And once at top do you pull up all the rope and abseil down leaving top anchor ? Thanks again
Hey Kris, at the top of many established routes are permanent anchors you can rappel down from or be lowered from. That way you can lower and remove all your gear. Or a Second can top rope the route and clean all your gear for you then clean the anchor and lower/rappel down from it. If there is no anchor, hopefully you can get down from a tree at the top without leaving gear. Hope that helps!
rockclimberlife ah ok that makes perfect sense thank you
was very interesting, I am biginner and was very curious
glad it helped!
Thank you! I just started two weeks ago and this is very helpful!
great! Thanks for watching Kay
What about solo climbing?
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot!!
Nice
thanks!
what about deepwater soloing? is it just another form of bouldering?
No. Soloing and deepwater soloing is climbing longer routes without any form of protection (well DWS you have the water vs. hard ground for protection). Bouldering is climbing short boulders at lower heights with a bouldering pad for protection. Hope that helps!
yes it does, thx for the reply :)
Soloing can involve ropes. Free soloing does not.
Great explanation, thank you!
Even though you’re an awkward person, you put together an excellent informational video. Thanks!
huh. didn't see them as awkward
I think top rope climbing and lead climbing with bolts also belong to sport climbing, there is another type called free climbing which they climb without or almost without any devices
+Lilies Yuan Correction. Free climbing is not necessarily no rope but it is without assistance of direct aid, so climbing a trad or sport route without using your gear as handholds is free climbing whereby Freesolowing is the type done with no belay or rope to secure a fall.
+Lilies Yuan Everything I mention here is free climbing, which just means climbing with your hands and feet on the rock and not pulling on gear. Free soloing is climbing without any safety devices (harness, rope, protection, etc.)

Is aid climbing or ice climbing something you want to get into?
Doctor Panoramic Not really... haha
we all have our area of preference when it comes to climbing. Some of the worlds greatest sport climbers have never put on crampons or climbed alpine style.
