- Hello there! I wanted to make a video about things I've learned about Northeastern that I wish someone had told me, so here it is. These are all based on my own perspective and experiences, so my opinions in no way represent the opinions of the whole school.
I realized after editing that I didn't say explicitly if Northeastern is a 'party school' or not. I think it really depends because there are students that party hard, but there's still a community for people that don't want to! Basically, it's what you make of it so it can be a party school if you want haha.

I’m currently a junior in high school and I’m really interested in applying to NU! I’ve actually also been considering to apply to University of Sydney as well, but I’m not sure if I will since that’s a pretty big change haha.

Why am I watching this I already go here and am applying for coop
I did NUin Berlin 2017 and went into the Midtown hotel for my first semester back, which also happened to be the first semester of midtown. Rooms 246-252 I believe are fire, don't underestimate the midtown, the staff is epic and will let you know before they let Northeastern know which saves trouble with OSCRR which is a struggle with underclassman. This video aligns well with my experiences at Northeastern, it's really nice to watch it as a senior. Northeastern is the best decision I made, the differences really make it truly experiential because who wants to sit in a classroom for 4 years straight when you can travel the world in 5 am I right?

I'm very on the fence about what I want to major in so I was wondering if you knew how difficult it is to change majors or if going in undecided will affect admission chances. Thanks so much for this informative video
hi this may not be relevant to your life anymore since I'm late lol but I don't think it's hard to change majors at all! a lot of students here actually end up switching their major at some point haha. there are so many combined majors that even if you decide to switch late (like after 2nd year) you can still do so because there are so many options of combinations (you can also make your own!). There are some exceptions like physical therapy and nursing, but other than those stricter programs things are generally pretty flexible. I'm not sure how going in undecided affects admissions, but undecided students are in the 'explore' program their first year and it's a pretty big program/it's common to do that so I don't think it should have any negative impact!

hi! I'm sorry for the late response, but this is a really great question! I would say there is a stress culture on campus, but it's kind of like a 'hustle' culture if that makes sense haha. Basically since mostly everyone goes on co-op, people are always staying busy to build up their resume and get a good co-op. It's really common for people to be involved in clubs, and to hold leadership positions in those clubs. I do feel like sometimes there is pressure to stay 'busy'. That said, many students do still find free time despite that culture, especially since many clubs end up forming your friend groups that you would spend time with anyway haha. Free time does also vary based on major, and then if you're on co-op or classes (more free time during co-op, but you're too tired from work to do anything with it lol). Other than that, we are lucky enough to be in a city, so a lot of people spend their free time exploring new places or eating out with friends (pre-covid at least...) Sorry this is a long reply, I could probably talk a lot more about this too, but in summary there is a bit of a stress culture, but it isn't overbearing, and many students choose to stay involved/busy of their own volition as opposed to feeling pressured into it. I hope that helps at all :)

hi! I would say that I didn't miss out on making friends, but those friendships were then definitely harder to maintain. You can't go on co-op until at least sophomore spring sem, so I had 3 semesters to explore and make friends before starting co-op. I would also say I've made more friends through clubs than classes, and you can do clubs even while co-op which is great! It's really easy to feel disconnected from campus and your friends while on co-op, so it takes extra effort to maintain those relationships but as long as you know that going into it I think you're good!

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering if students who take co ops outside of Boston, say New York, are responsible for their own rent and living conditions? And do students still have to pay for a meal plan during these long distance co ops?
Hi there! So when students take a co-op outside of Boston, they generally ARE responsible for their own rent and living conditions. For a few big cities that are popular co-op destinations (I believe NYC, Chicago, Washington DC, and the Bay Area) there is a possibility to lease through the office of off-campus housing. I've also seen some posters up for info sessions on how to find housing if you choose to co-op outside of Boston. However, it is all up to the student to make those arrangements. The good news is that you definitely don't have to pay for a meal plan when you're away! While on a co-op term, students don't even have to pay tuition because they're not in class. I believe there are a few general administrative fees to pay while on co-op, but other than that you shouldn't really be paying the university anything unless you're still living on campus!

In the vid she says LLC doesn’t matter, which is 100% cap. LLC totally matters and has a huge impact on your first year experience, just letting you know if you are still thinking about which LLC to put on your housing application.

Good job Jamie !! I graduated from Northeastern in 1970 with a BA in Philosophy. You captured the good and bad things of the university really well. The university continues to have quality teaching. It now has a more talented student body and a beautiful campus to match.

Apply you may never know if they give any finically support
They have one of the easiest applications so it wouldn’t hurt

Hello, thanks for your question! So basically a co-op is just a work experience that you get to have before you graduate. It's kind of like having a long-term internship. Starting during your 2nd year, students are assigned either a spring cycle (January to June) or fall cycle (July to December) to go on co-op. You apply and interview with companies the semester before your cycle starts. So, for example, I was assigned a spring cycle so I interviewed for positions the fall of my 2nd year, and I started working the spring of my 2nd year. Once you're on co-op, it's pretty much just like having a full-time job. You don't take any classes, and instead, you go to work every day, and typically you also get paid which is a bonus haha. Typically students do 2 or 3 co-op cycles before graduation, so they end up with 1-1.5 years of work experience before graduation. It's great because you get to build relationships with employers, and also see what it's like to actually work in the industry you're interested in. If I had to describe co-op in one sentence, I would just say that it's a 6-month internship you do instead of taking classes haha. I hope that helps!

I definitely got a lot of merch as a freshman, but I'm not sure how things are now w covid. Most of the merch used to be handed out at events and such. I'm p sure incoming freshman still all receive an incoming class t shirt though!

Hi there, welcome to northeastern :) this may not be super helpful, but I would say it is up to preference! I personally work on an Apple Macbook Pro, but there seems to be a fairly even divide between students that use Mac/PC. No matter which you decide to go with, just make sure it has enough processing power and memory to run the software needed for the computer science courses. I know that I've used Eclipse and IntelliJ to code in during various courses. Depending on your other courses, you might need to run other programs too like I know I needed MySQL for Database Design. I know that Khoury recommends at least 16GB of internal memory, at least 256GB of hard disk space, and at least a 13" display. I would agree with those recommendations. I would say try to stick to at least those specs, but overall don't worry too much about it because I've seen a large variety of laptops being used in the comp sci lab and everyone seems to be getting their work done just fine :) good luck, and don't forget to check out the student discounts available (I believe they list places to buy laptops with discounts in myNortheastern!) I hope this was at least somewhat helpful!

Hey! Rising senior here! Just wanted to know the typical class sizes? For the big lecture hall classes how many students are in there? (For UCs I know there’s about 500 students in each). And also since it’s a large school, is it still relatively easy to get the classes you want?
hi! I'm a third-year at NU. Our average class size is 24 students (across the university). I'm in the college of social sciences and humanities and my largest class has been around 70 students but most of them ar between 15-30. But I have friends in pre-med and CS and their classes are a bit larger, maybe around 40-50. In terms of getting the classes you want, its generally pretty easy, the only tough thing is scheduling because sometimes two classes are at the same time. But your academic advisor is super helpful in helping you get what you want.
i am considering transfering here for my sophomore year but am just worried about co-op... will I be in an odd position for co-op?

Hello Jaime, loving your work. my query is regarding academic advisors. How can we find which courses are best to choose independently in the absence of an academic advisor.
Hello, thanks for your question! Luckily, there are a bunch of resources online to help plan your schedule without your advisor. Most importantly, there is a publicly available online catalog that shows the exact program requirements for every major. To start, I would go to catalog.northeastern.edu and then navigate to the major you are interested in. On that page you will find a list of program requirements, so all of the courses you will need to take in order to complete that degree. You will also find a 'plan of study' that shows a sample plan for a 5 and 4-year track of what courses you would take during what semester. For my first advising appointment, I literally just told my advisor which plan I wanted and how many co-ops and they took that plan of study available online and just put it into Google Sheets for me lol. Once it was in Google Sheets, I could play around by dragging and dropping my courses into different semesters. When moving around the courses, the most important thing to be careful of is prerequisites. You can figure out which courses have a prerequisite or corequisite in the course catalog. That's what I did when I created my plan of study, and I figured out what I wanted to take when and just put it into my Google Sheets. Is it difficult adjusting if you're going back and forth between co-ops and regular classes?
I think it's easier to adjust going to co-op than going to classes. Co-op is nice because it almost feels like a break (lol) since there's no homework or assignments so you have more time to yourself after work/on the weekends. It's also lit because you get paid haha. Going back to classes is rough because you have to get back into the rhythm of doing schoolwork and managing your time efficiently, but I honestly don't think it's that bad! It takes like a week or two in both cases to adjust I'd say :)

I was accepted RD this year! From the top of my head my GPA was 94 UW, 97 W (100.0 scale) and I got a 32 and 34 on the ACT! lmk if you want to know more
I'm actually working on a video about this right now because I had the chance to see my admissions file! There will be more details in the video, but I'm pretty sure I had a 5.1/4 GPA (my school was weighted due to AP courses, so it's a strange number so sorry about that!) and my SAT was a 2190/2400 (I'm ancient and I took it before they changed the format lol). Hi! I'm going to be a NUin Boston student for my first semester because of covid, but I was wondering what on-campus housing/ the dorms are like? I've seen a lot of dorm tours and all of the rooms seem to have a different style, but are there any major pros/cons for Northeastern dorms in general? Also do most dorms have their own bathrooms or are there mainly communal bathrooms?
Hey! I'm a rising 3rd year at NU. Residence halls are kinda all over the place in terms of size, quality, age, etc. In general, the freshman dorms don't have AC, which is definitely a con during the few warmer months. Another con would be that most of the freshman dorms are older buildings, so things are a bit outdated. There are 2 new freshman buildings which are very nice though! A major pro that I would say is community feel in the residence halls. I've met all my best friends through my first-year residence hall, and I know many people have had the same experience. Another pro would be the location, since all the freshman dorms are right on campus, and you can get pretty much anywhere on campus in 5-10 minutes. Most freshman dorms have communal bathrooms, except for the 2 new freshman buildings which have 1 shared bathroom in between 2 shared rooms. "Upperclassman" dorms are nice apartments in which students can live in beginning their second year. These apartments are all located right on campus and have a full-size kitchen, full bathrooms, and a mix of shared & single rooms.

I know a lot of people take advanced writing virtually (including precovid lol) during coop, but I'm not sure about other classes. I also think that financial aid doesn't apply to a co-op semester, so tuition is usually out of pocket just a heads up!

I don't really like the atmosphere at NEU and there are other schools that I would rather go to, but because of the costs, I choose to go to NEU since they offered me huge grant money that's equivalent to $60,000. Also, the co-op programs seemed really appealing too. Who doesn't want to earn some money while in college? But then again, the perspective of graduating in 5 years kind of scared me. I would do everything I can to graduate in 4 years. I have a question for you: how do people manage to pack co-ops, study abroad, classes, and federal work-study all in 4 years. You only have 8 semesters after all. And if my grant pays only for my classes, then if I do 2 semesters of classes (freshman year), and 2 co-ops (one in the spring of the sophomore year, and one in the spring of junior year). This only left me with my senior year to do study abroad. This means that I will probably have to make up for the classes that I missed while I'm on co-ops during the summer, otherwise, I won't be able to graduate on time. So this means that you can pick only one over the other. I'm a freshman this year, and with everything being shut down by COVID this year, I worried if it's worth it to spend my entire undergraduate here at Northeastern.
I definitely feel this because grant money was a large influence in my decision to come here as well. I'm really sorry you don't like the atmosphere around campus, but I'm really confident that through exploring clubs/orgs you can at least find a group of people you vibe with which really improves the atmosphere imo :)
As for the 4/5 year thing, I was also super not into the 5 year idea at first lol. There's definitely a way to do it in 4, but it does mean that you will definitely give up your summers. It's a trade-off, but I honestly loved my summer semesters because I used them on study abroad Dialogues. Idk exactly what your major is, which can impact scheduling/study abroad options, but I can tell you what my plan was to fit co-op/study abroad/classes/federal work-study into 4 years. One thing to note is that during a summer semester, you only get 1/2 of your grant money. So, your money can be ‘split’ into summer semesters to add up to a total of 8 semesters. A full summer of class (summer 1 and summer 2) equals one normal semester (fall or spring).

Classes (Boston) : Based on this plan, there are 5 full semesters and 2 summer semesters of regular classes on the Boston campus.
Co-op : 2 co-ops, during the spring/summer 1 of 2nd and 3rd year
Study Abroad : There are 2 types, but Dialogues are summer programs worth 2 courses, and there are also traditional semesters abroad.
Federal Work-Study : This is only available for semesters you are taking class in Boston. It doesn’t work while on co-op or abroad (traditional and dialogue). Luckily, there are other scholarships you can apply to for while abroad to help replace that money. Personally, I did Film Fellowships with the Office of Global Services during all my time abroad, and also a YGL Scholarship, and Gilman Scholarship (external company) during my traditional semester abroad.

Hi! That's so awesome! I think for design professors it definitely depends on which design you want to specialize in because for the major you choose graphic, interaction, or experience design. For cs professors, you'll most likely take fundies 1 and discrete structures your first semester. They've been changing up which professors teach so I can't definitively say who is best to take it with. However, fundies 1 was definitely difficult for me to adjust to since it's taught in Racket. If you want, you can take a peek at the course content by googling 'fundies 1 northeastern' and the course page is there. It's where all the info and homeworks are, and it might help give you an idea of the course. Other than that, the one tip I would give about courses is that typically cs + design students take 'Design Process Context and Systems' their first semester. If you're interested in studying abroad, I would recommend possibly not taking that course just yet because there are multiple dialogues that offer it and you can do it during the summer (it's also more fun to take abroad haha). If the library is often over crowded, where do you usually study?
I go to northeastern and the library is massive so I find it really doesn’t get crowded a lot, but if it did there are so many other buildings you can go to like the curry student center, ISEC, the outdoor study tents, or just like any building that’s open and has tables. I also go to Panera a lot or other cafes but Panera is great bc you can get coffee and bagels and it’s just a cozy vibe in there. Hope this helps!
