- Join us today for a neat look at the overall Before and After look at a small land clearing project, that ultimately went from thick, nasty overgrown trees, weeds and brush to a nice new lawn in a matter of a few days. This is on a Southern Illinois farm where I was helping out a friend improve their Illinois homestead farm by taking back a severely overgrown bushy and wooded area and turning it back in to a nice lawn. Truly nice job! This motivates me to start cleaning an area in the back of my property…
Why? If you need the area, then go for it. If it's just to mow more lawn, I gotta ask why? They destroyed an ecosystem and planted grass which feeds nothing. They could have planted a prairie of native flowers and sedges. Instead they made runoff worse and kicked numerous bugs and birds out of their homes.
@@joeleming9605 - I have plans for it. We already practically have a nature sanctuary on the developed part - to include bears, foxes, and a lot of small animals.

After we dig and backfill a big trench for sewer main pipe we used the power grader attachment on the skid loader get it looking all good then We usually put straw down grows perfect every time

Kapper, quick question. How come you decided the push the brush back and not bring in the mower and grind it up so you don’t end up with the wind row of brush to look at?
Two reasons A) too much equipment to haul, but more importantly, even if you mow it you still have the sod of all the weeds to content with and the stumps. By skimming off the shallow root system of most weeds you get rid of a lot of that up front. Hope that makes some sense, thanks.

That was a smaller size project, I'd say I cleared less than a half acre. Pricing is all over the map depending on what kind of machine, competition, location and more. If you are interested in stuff like this and you live near us in So, IL, you can contact us. Thanks.

Wondering how tall the weeds and grass are over at the Kapper Kentucky Kabin? By now, It might look like the BEFORE picture of Phils yard??
Maybe so, but I had it bush hogged once already. Not sure when I'll have it done the 2nd time. But like you said, I really don't HAVE to do anything there and it will still be a great place! I'm wondering if my clover plots came in from last fall? Hope to take a look soon.

hard to say, bids are all over the map with machine work. But I'd say they could have ended up paying at least double what it cost them on this one.

I have to do the same thing but nothing but a rake.mosy people don't have a machine like that.
I understand and we have had to do it oh so many times with just hand tools. But we are fortunate that we were able to financially graduate to machines! Best of luck!

you could plant a meadow instead of yet another lawn, so sad :(
There are acres and acres of brushy meadow right next to this, and this lawn is quite small for around here, so it is very minimal.
Nature will reclaim an area fast if you stop mowing.
Man you ain't kidding!! Stuff grows like weeds!!! LOL
While there was probably invasives plants in there, you still destroyed an ecosystem just to plant turf which needs to get cut every week or two. The landowners played themselves. It would have been a great time to seed with wildflowers and native sedges. Maybe a tree or two. Huge loss for insects and birds.
Well not really so much. Their lawn was small, and they but up to acres and acres of fields and wetlands. Also if you keep a small lawn with rough plants around you will get more mice, rats and snakes at/around/in your house. Just a different viewpoint, thanks
@@kapperoutdoors those animals don't want to come out of the brush. So if you keep a mowed perimeter, they will stay away from the house. They like the security of the long grass. They don't want to leave that area. It's nature. They were here first regardless.

Awful. You turned perfectly great habitat into useless lawn.
Don't worry there was plenty of habitat surrounding them in them low grounds. And this section used to all be lawn anyway, just got overgrown.
Looks like a complete perversion of the natural environment. Lawns are nothing but a total waste of resources. But, yeah, you dominated the landscape to make it look like you want. Congratulations.
Easy for you to judge what others should do with their land isn't it? How much land have you purchased to preserve for nature?? these folks have acreage that is nothing but wildlife. We have preserved hundreds of acres on our own for wildlife. What kind of home do you live in? I bet there used to be critters living there long before your floor or basement was poured.....
