    For those that dont know, TWs government, Republic of China (ROC), claims to be the country called China. Their government was founded in mainland China, and once sat in the UN representing the country called China. But due to the Chinese Civil War, China was split into 2 powers , ROC and PRC. Till this day, no peace treaty nor armistice was signed so technically speaking, the civil war is still technically ongoing. And civil war means war within the *same* country. So "TW" isnt "another" country. Their government still claims to be the country called China.

    The interviewer should have been more precise. You can tell the interviewer and most interviewees don’t really understand the evolution of military service there. Reinstating military conscription this year it’s actually a 180 from the all volunteer military scheme achieved only 4-5 years ago. They get it wrong because the transition took many years and some form of military service have existed during the transition and never completely stopped. They also get it wrong because the government mostly represented the reinstatement as a duration change from 4 months to 1 year for popular consumption. But in reality, it’s a full reinstatement of conscription military service 5 years after it ended.
    Taiwan started to transitioned from a conscription military to voluntary military about 15 years ago. During the transition period, conscription was reduced in length, morphed into a civil voluntary service and actually completely ended in 2019. The 4 months service talked about so often is actually considered as “military training”, not actual military service. But under mostly external factors (i.e. Chinese threats, US urging, Ukraine, etc.) the government did a 180. But instead of full reinstatement and restoring the more meaningful 2+ year compulsory service, they took the easy way out and messaged it as if it’s only a simple extension from 4 months to 1 year.
    Taiwan’s problem is their goal of a full voluntary military never was able to attract enough soldiers and the desire to field more bodies caused the reversal. But the way they went about the reversal is problematic and not likely to help their military readiness. If anything, it would likely make it worse. What they should have done, instead of blanket conscription, was to institute a lottery and draft only as many bodies to fill what the gaps the volunteers can not fill. This way the unlucky guys that get drafted can be trained and paid like professional soldiers, serving the same duration. The current scheme will create a 2 tier military with more conscripts serving shorter duration than the number of professional soldiers. Imagine if you were a commander of such a mixed unit.
    By the way, this is actually similar to the CCP system except they never have to actually do it since they haven’t ever run short of volunteers.

    • @wynterwei9628
      @wynterwei9628 Месяц назад +1

    • @gr12321
      @gr12321 Месяц назад

      @@wynterwei9628 That’s not a Taiwan problem. It’s fairly universal for compulsory military service during peace time. That’s why many countries, including the US, find professional voluntary army a better solution especially in the age of more sophisticated equipment and less need for large number of soldiers.
      Another problem with Taiwan is none of their military leaders have any actual combat experience especially modern combat. Many of their training and decisions are still based on very old doctrines. Luckily their CCP adversaries are in the same boat.

So you can see these young men do not really have the best military sense. However, there are tons of YT videos showing what the Taiwan army looked like before 2000. What most westerners don’t grasp is that China and Taiwan’s relations are, historically, quite deep. Relations in business, academics and family. Not that that justifies some vague notion of “independence” or “unification,” but it means that there is a HUGE spectrum of options between total war and total surrender.
    THAT is why Taiwanese civilians are not rushing to enlist in the army to “defend their home.” They know that China is not out to destroy them, and that both sides are just searching for a sustainable security arrangement.
    The status quo survives because both sides believe that such an arrangement can someday be reached diplomatically.

    As a second gen Chinese-Canadian with relatives in Mainland, here's how I see the China-Taiwan situation.
    1. The legal difference between China and Taiwan is a political one, this stems from the Chinese Civil war which ended with Mainland being the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan being the (at the time) temporary base for Republic of China (ROC)
    2. The question then is whether or not Taiwan should disgard its title as the Republic of China which technically lays claim on both Taiwan and the entire mainland + outer Mongolia (until 2002) and become its own sovereign+political entity which only includes the island.
    3. In an ideal world where politics + geopolitics are dictated by ideals such as equal and complete national sovereignty for all countries regardless of size and power, of course the Taiwanese people should be entitled to a referendum overseen by the UN (which can actually enforce international laws cough cough) to decide their own fate if they wish to do so.
    4. However, as most people who watch this channel probably knows, the world is not an ideal one. We can strive for ideals but I believe that geopolitics must be seen through the lens of Realpolitik. So what will happen to Taiwan if they do declare independence as Taiwan and not as ROC? I think Mainland will immediately launch a military campaign, regardless of consequences. This is a matter of principle and one of the few things the PRC is inflexible on so the fact that Green Party leaders such as Cai Yingwen and Lai Qingde keep pushing this notion to win the popular vote is in my opinion selfish and stupid. In the end, if war breaks out it's the regular people who will suffer, these leaders already have their assets ready overseas and can leave whenever they want. It's very dangerous when a region's political leaders interests aren't completely tied to the area they're supposed to represent. For myself, I would rather have anything other than war.
    5. But let's say that China doesn't lauch war against Taiwan after it announces independence, is it all sunshine and rainbows afterwards? Obviously no, the Taiwanese people are currently in their most advantageous position in between China and America where they are wooed by both sides. If people are interested I would encourage looking into historical Chinese policies towards Taiwanese merchants/businessmen, let's say it's quite generous. That's why Chinese sanctions in the past years have been effective, because these economic ties exist in the first place. I'm not saying this is wrong or right I'm just saying that this is something that happened historically. To be honest, if Taiwan were to declare "independence" it would just become another satellite state to the US with real economic, political and social impact similar to what would happen if Taiwan were to be reintegrated back into China. As people have stated in the video, the best thing for Taiwan would just to carry on in the current state.
    6. The above are just some of my most logical analysis, as someone who have roots in mainland China I of course have a lot of emotional/biased opinion on this topic but I don't think it's as helpful to everyone else. Honestly, I think the above viewpoint is the worst one to have because it gets me a lot of heat from both sides but it is what it is. Thanks to everyone who finished the entire essay and hopefully it was interesting/helpful!

      None of us want war but the way China is provoking everyone in South East Asia, using even the Philippines to escalate the situation, and lying right on everyone's faces that they aren't doing anything illegal, you know their intentions are loud and clear. Now they are bringing Russia into the picture as well. Disregarding international laws. There's even a reported one death of a fisherman in the EEZ of the Philippines, perpetrated by a Chinese vessel that is currently heading to Indonesia. And the fact that Philippines are only doing what is right to protect their territory, China injuring and killing these people in their own backyard is an indication that China is pushing for war.
      It's like testing other countries patience and ones it causes a trigger, they will likely make that a reason to retaliate. And if other countries does respond to protect their ally, I'm sure that will give China a reason to take Taiwan as well.

Jinmen (or Kinmen) is a small island off the coats of the main island and is within swimming distance to Mainland China. There is no way China can allow Taiwan which holds such strategic geography to fall under the control of a foreign power. There is also the question if the airspace/naval geography of Taiwan which is extremely important to China. When the civil war just ended and ROC was still much more advanced in terms of more the equipment/resource heavy navy, the PRC was basically cut off from the southeastern part of the ocean off its eastern coast. Just these two points alone makes the prevention of Taiwanese independence a basic principle of the PRC

    The service is either for educational purpose, like the middle-aged man said, or to stimulate fear and hate to China and a sense of false safety by the current green party. If war ever breaks out, Taiwanese military won't stand a chance if not interfered by US and their allies. War is about population, industry and technology, the strait is easily defensible but still won't compensate for the huge difference in sheer power. However, if the Taiwanese are resilient enough like the Vietnamese and engage in guerrilla warfare, it might make the occupying CCP make recessions, but that's probably all. But in reality, war is very unlikely like most answers, and I do pray there be no war, China might end itself if war breaks out due to embargo and sanctions (those who engage embargo and sanctions would also suffer, since we have global chains now), in best case for them, would be stagnant and downfall of economy, but that will take place after they occupy Taiwan. The chance for US and allies to really send troops to Taiwan if war breaks out is also slim. US send none to Ukraine, an almost member of EU, and that has dragged on for 2 years.

      If you believe China is about to rain missiles on Taiwanese cities, you've read too much Fox and CNN. They've been maintaining a delicate balance for more than half a century now. The desire for maintaining peace is something Americans won't understand because unlike East Asians, their culture is not collectivist and familial.
