I was rewatching the beginning of modeling the rocks over and over again in desperation to find s e g g s combination to comment about it. I found none. I'm disappointed.

You use E to extrude a face, then S to scale it along all 3 axes. Then use G to move if needed. And voila section is ready. Keep doing that untill you get desired rock shape. Hope that's what you meant.
