iRacing : My First NASCAR iRacing Series Race! (iRacing NASCAR Series @ Kentucky)

- My first race in this car, in this series, and it may just be my last. I really enjoyed the racing. But, I have an extraordinarily low tolerance for cautions, and these guys can't help but wreck all the damn time.
Follow me like a stalker! (please dont actually stalk me... duh)

I feel like Empty is the best source of a time machine for iRacing content and how that racing has changed
I always find myself rewatching these old races.
That guy at the end used too much NOS.
Why has no one replied to this comment?
Hahahaha. Text chat as EB gives up on commentating in frustration:
"I hope the server crashes before the race finishes."
"It's about the only thing that hasn't so far."
Man, I give you mad props for playing oval on a single screen at that FoV Matt... I cannot imagine driving with a few dudes racing all around me considering how peripheral awareness is not quite the strong point of such a setup. Quite the testicular fortitude as one would say. :)
Your Indy circle races are best, but love all your circle track vids Empty Box! Would be cool if you called out your marks into the turns and how they changed as your tires warmed and after pits.
You had a good finish going but that is what happens all the time on the ovals when someone decide to not to take tires and take the track position. The side effect of this the person will spin their tires and cause mayhem.
Finally, EmptyBox keep doing these races!!
It's funny, I remember you wondering in the Nationwide at Road America video if oval racers laugh when you're driving oval, like you laugh when oval drivers are doing road. After this video, I would say yes! :)
I've watched several of your races. Your skills are impeccable. Subscribed. Oh! I just joined iRacing too, you made up my mind for me. Appreciate it, hope to be on your level soon.
Thanks for the video, that was entertaining! I race rFactor and some of the mods people have for that but I think this Iracing looks really good. I am gonna go check it out
Even I - a road guy - see that EB was going to go full trolling from the start. Bring the popcorn guys,it's gonna be a hell of a ride
EmptyBox and a full Nascar series? *Gets popcorn and soda* This is going to be good! lol But I always wanted to see you do 1... just 1 race at a restrict plate track.
I'd rather smack myself hard than go plate "racing".
Empty Box Then what are you going to do next week. They're going to Daytona.... well I guess you will be smacking yourself all that day. (no nasty pun intended)
UltimateGaming
I'll be not racing NASCAR stuff, that is what.
how do you not fall asleep racing nascar? 5 mins into the vid and I was ready for a nap.
If you're driving, its much more intense. People think that it is easy, but really you need to be paying attention the whole time
The guy that you were behind that toyoda guy with the star wars character I couldn'd stop laughing
awesome vids man, always fun to watch
Matt try the A series. I bet it's cleaner, of course I really have no idea since I'm still fairly on the new side of things in iracing. The NiS is C and up so there are more inexperienced drivers in the series, by logical assumption. Also I have found that in the lower series you really don't have to be fast to do well. I typically don't qualify because I'm still learning most of the cars and tracks, but I usually improve on my starting position just because a big chunk of people ahead of me just wreck out. A lot of people overdrive the exits on the corners and spin themselves on their own. A lot like what was shown at the end of the video. I'd love to race with you some time though, hit me up on iRacing. You drive really clean (typically) and I'd love to pick up some tricks from you.
A few weeks ago, when I woke up in the morning, my wife told me I was talking in my sleep. She told me that I said "this is why I don't do oval races, because they suck!" It was a fair assessment.
XD LULULULUL
@@teddyshapedsoap Yeah, but have actually driven a REAL race car on a REAL oval track, either asphalt or dirt?
Though I have to admit in the carnage report, the 10 car did a good job of avoiding the inside wall
Because Danica wasn't in the race....lol
You should be the "Road Course Ringer" at Watkins Glen! Just like that Busch Series... I mean Nationwide series race at Road America.
"And suddenly a race!!"..."Yellow Flag is out" I lold
EB rage-quitting a commentary? Ye Gods!
I don't think it was a rage quit, I think he was just trying to compose himself and it was probably better to say nothing as we could all tell what happened.
If i could make a request? Could you put up some skip barbers I love those cars and everyone else commentary over the hole of youtube doesn't match up to yours so this would be mush appreciated... more appreciated than driving round in circles for an hour and having the longest carnage report in history. thanks, keep up the good work.
congrats on getting into the NASCAR series
I'm sorry. I understand you had a rough time with all the yellows, but I must admit that I laughed at your comment at 56:00 "15 wrecks to go."
Oh man Empty Box....that darn 'Passing Under Yellow' is nigh on impossible to get out of in that situation, unfortunate.....doing very well up until then, old tires, restart, happens every week to someone !!
Not sure what was up with the guys at Kentucky this past week, it's not that difficult a track yet 15 cautions in the NiS Open on Sunday was a joke....how people can comment after the race it was a "Good Race" is beyond me.
Good to see you on the Ovals though Empty Box although it's a minefield of prams and thrown baby toys most occasions which may lead to you not being back for a while :(
Wow! Cool empty box! I requested an oval race vid and there it is :)
I love how you're just touching 200 mph going into Turn 1. Hehehe
Dude that whole ending sequence was so painful to watch :D
Watching this makes me want to dig out NASCAR Racing!
I dont play iRacing, just here for the entertaining content
Better than the real race
Between watching this and keeping up with RutgersKev, I wanted to do a few NASCAR iRacing series races... but I am not so sure anymore, the cautions are something else, the tour mod series, usually only has one or two cautions a race, regardless this was a nice change of pace from the usual GT3 vid, so thank you Mr. Box, oh and speaking of GT3, time for some Brands Hatch for week 10, heck yea!
I dont know, the 'dega races I watched earlier this year beg to differ lol
How do you know when to throttle up on ovals
I've been contemplating iracing, looks rather fun, wondering if there are a bit shorter races though? I generally dont have the time to sit down for a whole hour or more to race? Also, tight in loose out would usually be a trackbar adjustment I believe, but Idk how the setup in iRacing works :P
Race distance depends on the series, this series is half distance of the real world NASCAR races, while most are generally around 25-40 minutes or so.
Evan DeLesDernier guessing you have iracing by now? its awesome!. my gf hates it though. yes the trackbar adjustment could help.
Will you be doing a video in these cars on Watkins Glen when it comes up?
I was hoping you'd do one at Sonoma last week, and I'd love to see you wrestle these cars around a roadcourse
We been waiting for you to come over to the oval side :D
was cheering for you at 27. haha nice moves.
"And if thats tricky you people need to drive the Dallara" #REKT
haha :D i was the driver of the #10 :) funny to see my self :)
finished on P6 after 2 black flags (partly 2 laps down) and one spin (and the begin)
Wow, can't imagine how mad you must be by the end of it.
You really need to do carnage reports in all of your videos! I'm Dying from the 22 and 23 wreck...
The best part is the guys behind you were 3 wide with no issue. IDK, the 22 was on the "get me away from this guy" list. Maybe it was the neon green paint.
Yeah... He was not the nicest of guys. Did you hear him after the race? 5 or 6 guys were all over him about how much of an idiot. I took pride in it.
You did awesome for being a first timer
Not bad for your first NiS race, Matt....LOL
Matt, for an extra challenge you should try other tracks like, Martinsville, Bristol Motor Speedway, Daytona and Talledega.
Did you just use the word "challenge" in a sentence including "Daytona and Talladega"?
Empty Box touche, LOL
There is nothing like the thrill of oval racing. That is mainly what made me choose to go oval in iRacing, back when I got out of the rookie series.
Road racing is more demanding, requires more finesse and technique, but the thrills are rare compared to oval racing. Having said that, I have to admit that I get tired of the poor racing standards on oval racing, even on the A class. Thinking of going to "the other side of the force", so to speak.
Was probably the longest carnage report you've ever made.
Mr Empty Box, can i please request doing some v8 supercars? thanks you legend!
Here's a thought when you are new to ovals: Paint your car all white with big black cow letters: I DONT KNOW WHAT IM DOING. So people get scared/intimidated because they dont want you to crash into them. Gain positions by driving in there mirrors all the time.
When you hold ur low lane ur fast. Good run
Member when these cars could hit 200 across the start/finish line of a cookie cutter? Pepperidge farm remembers
I'm like you Matt. I enjoy a little break from road and do a few oval races now and again. But it's impossible to remain in a positive state of mind. These guys have no clue about spatial awareness and they seem to think that nailing the throttle, closing your eyes and praying to God will get them through the crash ahead. Like you said, it is a joke, it's pathetic.
These cars should be the Arca car no excuse on why not, I also wish they would make Arca fixed and Arca open especially since these cars aren’t used any more.
Such a great driver!
i did the saturday race and had like 8 cars that spun and not one brought out a caution( which is good i guess). then a guy gets sideways and saved it, Nooooooppppppe "caution is out"
Are you sponsored by Pepsi? Because 2:48 would have been a great sponsor plug. Especially as it sounded like you were going into commercial.
Nope, but it's NASCAR, so the whole thing is a giant commercial.
haha i Raced with some guys in the Indy Car that normally drive the Gen6 at the Start of the Race there was a 8 car Wreck on start lmao!
Hey Empty Box Do You Have Any Suggestions For Getting Out Of The Rookie League.. I Race Clean, But Its The Other People Around Me, I Also Have A Small Anger Issue And I Feel That I Need To Get Revenge If Someone Messes Up My Race After They Screw Up... Ill Have A Video Sometime To Show What Happens In My Races.. As I See Your Races Are Nice And Clean
"15 wrecks to go" lmaoo
Watching the replay it looks like #1 and #22 were real racing pros
you did the right thing by passing on the outside but it wasn't green.. you probably know this by now
Amen Empty Box ihave a question can you show us your Rig man like your setup
I believe he said he has no intention of doing this, as he said in one or more of his videos.
I don't know if he Did or Not But Id like to Know Cause mine is a PS3 Steering wheel and pedals shittiest thing ever
He does have the hardware he uses under the "About" tab on is channel page. According to the list, he uses a Fanatec Clubsport wheel with a Formula rim, and the Fanatec Clubsport V2 fo pedals.
He must of saved a lot of money cause the rig is like 2500$ plus those steering wheels are mostly for Road courses i need Oval
I thought you did a few truck races? or am I imagining? then again I am very sleepy.
Yes, I've done enough oval racing (not just here but also NR03), but I've never jumped up to this car and series.
Great first run
i need more of your videos!!
TBH, I really think that's a bad habit to be carrying over to the oval side. You should either be on the gas, or the brake. And also, you're leaving a lot of room open going into 1. You should use more of the track and don't smash the brake so much. Let it roll.
Just trying to help :)
on the gas or off? its a throttle not a on/off switch
gas on/off is the reason why there were so many cautions LOL
He didnt crash, I think his driving was much better than 98% of the drivers on the oval side..on/off the gas is basically why there was a yellow every 5 mins...duhh
Dalton Alexander Oh, I'm sorry. I meant pressing the brake or the gas.
I really screw up when I type lol
I never did an Oval race so I don't know a lot about it at all. I have a question: When a car spins and goes backwards the roof seems to fold open. Why's that?
I believe those flaps deploy to prevent the cars from flipping over when they spin out.
Tnx
I've never seen a delayed green before.
please do more oval you did great for the first race in gen 6
GOOD LAD !!!!!!! More long vids please !!!!!!!
Yeah that restart sucked. If you would've made that move when the green dropped you would've been fine, but not much of a choice when the leaders go on the pace car.
Yea, you are kind of screwed either way on a restart that late. If this race had live admins, it would be a non issue because it was clear what happened, but oh well. The amount of caution was more off putting than the result.
Box think of it this way NASCAR drivers are use to more smooth tracks so Kentucky is harder for them to keep a car you drive road so you can save a car way easier as they can do what they learned and let off the accelerator I race NASCAR usually not this many cautions
Nice job missing that 8 car at 6:30
Hmm... night race? Good. Needs moar Sebring, though.
"Crack open a Pepsi"
"Pepsi"
Could drinking a beer under caution be an Idea?
Don't know why you didn't run at Sonoma...I know you ran the B car at Road America but the Gen 6 at Sonoma seems like it would be more in your wheelhouse to me. And that's not just because it's a road course, but because you complain about cautions every damn time you run an oval race, like you expect them to never happen at all.
Just never got around to it.
I don't mind cautions. I understand they will happen, it's a part of racing. However, when the longest green flag stint is 15 laps.... no. Just no. 6 or 7 cautions? Fine. 12 to 15? Not so much.
"I hope the Server crashes before the race finishes"
so now that it is over. will you ever do it again?(not a cookie cutter track)
Outside road courses, probably not. I dunno. Maybe, maybe not.
I have the problem of I only like tracks under a mile, road courses and anything with bumps / character. NASCAR has a deficiency in all of those categories. Then you add in the fact that the average iRacer is incapable of racing on a short track and not blowing everything up in the process, there is a very small selection of tracks where racing in this car sounds appealing.
How many of those involved the 1 car? Sheesh...
hey i am new to this iracing thing and i want to know what happened when you crash do you go to the garage or what in nascar?
MeBeary Anime, Disney & Cartoons If you crash you either keep going damaged or you make a pitstop and they fix it in however long it takes to fix - sometimes seconds, sometimes minutes. In the real world, they would need to take a car back to the garage to fix heavy damage, but not here (or any sim or game for that matter.)
Empty Box Thanks for telling me
Nice Pepsi Shill there.
Yay! Flavor! :D
And to think another popular RUclipsr seems to think the DQ system is bad. Watching #1 wreck so much just tells me it isn't harsh enough.
Is driving on ovals really that hard in iRacing? I never tried that game, so please excuse this question if it's stupid.
Btw, I would be Kyle-Busch-mad at some of these wreck-specialists^^
It just seemed to me you were using too much brake going in, too much front bias. and not using the stagger coming off. Back off sooner and get back to the gas sooner.
When you've actually DRIVEN a real race car you understand what is happening and why. I raced asphalt modifiers for 18 years, off-road motorcycles for 5, rally car for 2 years. Home tracks were Islip Speedway, New London/Waterford Speedbowl, Pocono and Watkins Glen. I started at the old Watertown, NY. ,and Sandy Creek cinder tracks.
Matt I have notice that when you're entering turn 1 and 3 that you're braking and feeding at the same time...does that help transferring the weight? Thanks!!
Ehhh.... Frankly it's a bad habit and not much more. It's basically slowing down less, as if I just used less brake.
Thanks...
Empty Box Yeah with this car you definitely shouldn't use throttle in entry, car rotates much better when rolling without throttle. But I can understand your habit, as many road cars need that throttle brake.
I'd like to see more of this kind of racing because it was entertaining, but, is it really that hard to drive these things? I completely understand how annoyed you had to have been with all of the 'go 2 laps, wreck, two laps, wreck' occurring. This almost worries me about how bad they drive in the real world
It's not an easy car to drive, no. But if you have restraint and don't drive like a bozo, it's very possible to keep it together without much issue.
Are those guys who kept getting loose doing something wrong?
You should race with rutgers kev I know u did in indy car and his invitational.
Different iRatings, different splits. Can't really control that outside hosted races which I try and stay away from.
Empty Box ok
Empty Box did u ever pit or did u cut it out I'm at 0:22:18
Joshua Sim
Yea, pit stops were made on any run over like 7 laps in this race.
Ok
how do you move the location of your speedometer?
in car, alt + k, then use your mouse to grab 'n' drag
+Brandon Slay There is no speedometer in the cockpit. Kappa
You did excellent for the amount of seat time you have. Sucks about the idiot that got you black flagged.
Can someone help me with my iracing gear? it would be greatly appreciated.
I have a driving force gt wheel and I am getting tired of the pedals and gear shifter. The wheel itself is adequate. Is it possible to buy a fanatic shifter and pedal set, plug them directly into the computer via usb where it would work with iracing?
So i would be using the dfgt wheel with fanatic pedals and shifter.
Yes it is possible.
Sorry Mr. Box, I completely flubbed that restart. My apologies.
Sorry if it's been asked already but what do you use to record game footage? For editing? Thanks
Just found your video where you answer this question. My bad.
just love it make more pls lol
How did you get the menus to disappear? I'm trying to get replays without that menu. Thanks.
This isn't recorded from a replay, it's done live. But in the replays, press space to get rid of the bars on the top / bottom.
Jeez, this looks like its running on Windows 97
what are those flap thingies on the roof that raise when the car decelerates? they remind me of airbrakes on airplanes
When going backwards? Those are the roof / hood flaps, designed to get the air out from under the car to prevent them from flipping over.
Empty Box I don't think it removes the air from under the car, it just disrupts the airflow over the top and produces more downforce so the car doesn't act like a wing.
Dalton Alexander
Getting the air out from under the car is most certainly what the hood flaps are doing.
Can i ask where you are getting this information, because I am 99 percent positive thats not the main reason, if a reason at all, to why these flaps work so well. I am completely sure that the main reason is because of the added downforce.
Anyways it doesn't make sense the way you said it. Whenever Stock Cars flip they flip back end first, so saying the flaps in the FRONT of the car are used to remove air from underneath the car, that doesn't make sense.
Really though, if you can tell me where your getting this info please tell me, I'm always interested in learning new things, even if that means I'm wrong.
Dalton Alexander
The hood flaps on the new car is more or less the replacement for the old car's much smaller flaps up on cowl.
These cars generate much of their downforce by sealing off the front and side of the car, creating low pressure under the car and thus downforce. Turn the car around and suddenly the air is packing back in and as the rear of the car isn't designed to face the airflow, it's likely to cause lift naturally anyways. (though usually you would never go backwards fast enough for this to be an issue of course)
It's the same thing as what the ACO has done with the prototypes with the big honking holes in the fenders. The big honking fin is the equivalent of the roof flap trying to create some downforce with the car traveling sideways, the holes in the fenders to evacuate the air and keep it from packing up and creating any extra lift.
There might be extra downforce provided by the hood flaps while going backwards, but I'd feel very safe in saying that the main purpose is to help get the air out from under the car. If you look closely when one of the guys in NASCAR spins, you can actually see the hood lift up from just the air pressure!
I grew up following nascar, and love oval racing. But I find myself enjoying road a lot more in iRacing simply because of the excessive cautions. If you can't run a track without spinning, why run?
I'm the same way I grew up watching Jeff Gordon win everything. But I can't get into ovals on Iracing. Maybe its because I'm still stuck as a rookie but I just can't bring myself to get out of it. Racing the Skippy and the mustang is just so much more fun.
Yes, there it is the oval race drama LOL
1:03:17 Think ima lil late to the party but is that eric cartman in the #4 no wonder he wrecked cant even see over the steering wheel
