  • This building-the Burj Khalifa-which stands strong on loose, sandy soil braving the strong Arabian winds-is truly a modern engineering marvel. In this video, we are going to explore all the design secrets of the world’s tallest building, starting from its surprisingly simple hexagonal core. This incredible feat of civil engineering is even able to confuse the wind due to its unique shape and lightning with the help of modern technology. Let’s get into it.

Just trying to imagine the workers assembling parts of the structure at such heights was mind blowing.
You can barely see people walking down the street but they look like tiny dots that look more like some type of tiny insects. Keep in mind that this was from floor 154 and that there are still more levels above. Just really impressive!!!

If anyone else wonders: my first thought upon hearing that the whole thing is built on sand was "soil liquefaction!" Apparently an assessment found that in case of an earthquake, soil up to sever meters deep could liquefy but not below that. Since the foundations are deep enough, we probably won't see the Burj Khalifa sink and topple over. Probably.

For unrelated reasons, I ended up studying something different, but every time I look at such phenomenal results of human engineering and science, I feel a bit regret for not studying something civil/mechanical-engineering-related. Maybe, some day. Until then, at least I can still remain baffled by what we have achieved already.

I can't be the only one with an irrational fear of being in tall buildings. I'd be so scared thinking of it falling down with me inside. I'd worry the ground isn't stable enough. I know it's natural for skyscrapers to sway a bit in the wind, but if I were in a building and it started to do that, I'd actually probably die of a heart attack. During my stay in Vegas on the 34th floor of a hotel, I had to remind myself daily that the building has stood for a long time and that it most likely won't suddenly collapse.

As for the lightning rod. I think you need to double check this one.
The lightning rod is what we call ESE. Early Streamer Emission air terminal. It will not use a battery to generate an opposite polarity. More of like it is already inherent in the atmosphere. The ESE detect the type of polarity due to events prior a lightning strike.
To make it simple, lightning is generated due to opposite polarity that is why it hits the ground. Being said that, the polarity that attracts the lightning is already in the atmosphere near the ese. Light comes out when this two polarity meet.
The battery that you are talking about the video might be the lightning counter.
