Poor Sark, he arrived at B5 a season too early to meet Tron.

Ah, I see we’re celebrating Independence Day by reuploading the review of the episode where Jinxo discovered his independence. I’m sure that’s totally the reason and not just a coincidence.

This may not be the best of episodes objectively, but it will always have a special place in my heart. The idea of seekers we see in this episode is kind of something we have lost in our modern world: the idea that the search and the voyage is more important than the end result, that it has value as a way of life even if you never find what you search for, and that people like that should be honored, like the Minbari do. Today, the only place left in society for this kind of mentality is in the virtual space of fantasy novels, video games and TTRPGs, and that's something that I find incredibly sad. An entire dimension of the human condition kind of got lost in the shadows of history with the loss of what high medieval society still called the knightly âventiure - the hero's journey, the search for the holy grail.

So I'm not the only person who always thought of Monty Python's Holy Grail when I heard about the Babylon stations falling over and sinking into the swamp. 😁

Fun Fact: The judge is played by Jim Norton, who is famous for playing Bishop Brennan in Father Ted.
David Warner was a tremendous actor. He’s also played an alternate universe incarnation of the Doctor in a few Big Finish audio adventures.

In the videogame Privateer the Darkening, they brought in David Warner for one fairly long scene where all he does is exposition dump.
And yet he completely steals the show, making some rather dry and cliche revelations completely rivetting. That's how incredible an actor he was.

David Warner is, was (😪) a legend.
Also there is something about Jinxo in this episode that calls to me (we Thomas's have to stick together after all)
As a one off it's not a bad B5 episode. Not as great as what is coming up but helping to set the stage in several parts for the future its a solid episode.

Thr real balanced build would be a Techno Mage, a Ranger, Monk and Theif, with a Mimbari Warrior Caste to tank.

I saw this episode many years ago on the Sci-Fi channel. It's one of the few Babylon 5 episodes I still remember, and the only things I could remember before watching this review where the conversation with Delan and Gajic, and the conversation with Jinxo where Gajic tells him that he's lucky. I guess that really shows what a great actor David Warner was, to make such an impression.

My favorite part of the episode is the end where they’re explaining to Kosh about the Fake Kosh. “It seems they did it because people are afraid of you” “GOOD”.

This was the first episode of B5 I ever saw and it was talk of the Babylon curse that really got me thinking about the show. I mean this a very human way of viewing challenging events.

The Grail is still very much symbolic. Or rather Grail is literal but the seeking of it is symbolic. It's very much "journey mattering more then the destination. Taking people who have nothing else to keep them moving and gives them some goal. And sure you can say that makes it just a façade in the way and I suppose it does, at least at the start.
And sometimes that's exactly what our stupid monkey brains need to get on with things.
It just sounds a lot better to say even to yourself that "after tragic loss I embarked on a spiritual quest to find a new meaning" instead of "my wife died so I decided to just travel for the rest of my life".
But I agree I wish this idea was packaged with better story.

They were interviewing (legendary animation/comics/game writer) Christy Marx on the official Conan the Barbarian RUclips channel recently and I remembered she wrote this episode (being a friend of Joe Straczynski's from his animation days). JMS claimed any problems he has with the episode aren't the script's fault, and maybe that's true. There are a lot of guest actors in this episode besides Warner after all.

Well, on the bright side, given how far the heroes are from their legends' sources, they're _possibly_ not capable of accidentally destroying the station with their Noble Phantasms.
