  • If you haven't seen the previous videos on this tractor, I bought it recently via online auction. I saw pictures of it but I didn't see it in person until the day I picked it up. Besides cosmetics, the previous owner did a good job of maintaining it. The oils and fluids were in good shape. The gas was a little old and he clearly used ethanol gas as you will see in this video. While using the tractor, it began to sputter and surge so I removed the carburetor to inspect it ...
I found a sticking float needle valve which was probably causing the sputtering and surging. I also found a fair amount of "green sticky residue" which was gumming things up. Non-ethanol fuel is easy to get in our little town, and really don't like spending my time cleaning out carburetors and fuel systems. So, why run ethanol in old equipment??

Love the details. I'm about to dig into my 661 that I stalled on 6 years ago. Rebuilt the head and then before I finished, I took a different fork in the road.I needed a refresher.

No getting away from ethanol gas in the Kalifornia Kollective. Just have to put some 2-stroke oil in the gas, say 100:1 and add a drain valve. Shut off the gas and drain the carb at the end of the day ...

There is always Texas, Arizona, Idaho and a number of other states if CA is so bad. Stop your bitching and move.

Nice job on the carb rebuild,. All the high test fuel in Canada is ethanol free, but they also used lead in the fuel, so I use a lead substitute to add to the fuel. In the U.S. you might find it at a NAPA store if you choose to do the same. Thanks from the southern shores of Georgian Bay.

I have no issues with ethanol, the gasoline of today is not very high quality, ethanol added or not. I have successfully converted a lawnmower to straight E-85 with zero issues other than hard to start on cold days. No carburetor or fuel line deterioration, motor did not blow up or any of the dire predictions the nay sayers claim will happen after one year of use. The mower runs smoother on E-85 after the conversion. I tore down the carburetor after using this fuel for a year in my experiment and it was far cleaner than it was on straight gasoline, no corrosion. Water accumulation was not an issue either. My experience with E-85 is that it actually stores better than regular gasoline, as it does not go stale near as quickly. I own many vintage ford tractors with the same updraft carburetor as shown here. My next project will be converting one of them to run on E-85 as well. I know I will have difficulties starting on cold days but am working on a solution for that as well. Only real down side I see is more fuel consumption but these tractors are used so little I would rather use it than lose it to conventional gasoline going stale as quickly as it does these days. I used to blame ethanol for all my carburetor issues until I experimented with it. I was pleasantly surprised by the results. I really believe modern gasoline with all its additives is the real culprit on our carburetors today. Conversion only consists of enlarging the main jet 20 to 30%, adjusting the carburetor settings and your good to go. If you doubt this and have an old lawn mower then try it for yourself. Here is an interesting read on these conversions. www.scribd.com/document/297180136/Retrofit-of-a-Briggs-and-Stratton-Small-Engine-to-Run-E85

Don't use ethanol in older gas engines. A big mistake
