Here's a lowkey one: When blurbs on the front or back are for a completely different book by the author. Or completely replace any summary on the back.
"from the author of the hit series, about the boy chasing a girl through a forest of magical land, and defied all odds"... Okaaay but what is THIS series about??

I hate any kind of blurb in the front cover too, I want the title and name of the author there, not a quote and name of another random maybe more famous author
I found this with the WoT series, all the mass market paperbacks have the little blurb about the Wheel turning, but nothing about the specific book, which is annoying considering there are so many, and most of their titles (excluding the first two) don’t have much to do with the plot of each book
When the back has a review instead of a blurb. Ebooks do this a lot, too. Tell me what the book is about, not why a journalist thinks you're a talented writer.
Or "why your fellow author friends thinks I need to read it".

this is really interesting. I've noticed that a lot with English books but in Germany books always have blurbs on the backs and never reviews.
@@grace4683 if/when my books get published, I hope they never have back covers with reviews rather than blurbs. I also hope that's something authors get a say over.
The sticker thing drives me INSANE! We've vowed to never do that to our books, authors, and readers! Also, the special edition thing is tricky! I see it from both sides. It's hard to solve that one 😬
Unless the sticker says that this book won a Pulitzer Prize, then I don't care.
another title trend i hate is "the profession's relation", e.g. the alchemist's daughter, The Captain's Daughter, The Poacher's Son, the bookbinder's daughter and so on and on, there's SO MANY of them

hm funny how it’s mostly female relations that are labelled that way. i wonder if a book is titled “the alchemist” or “the pirate” or “the captain” and people would visualise a female character instead of a male character?
I bought the Mistoborn trilogy as a pocket edition boxed set. Honestly, I did it because it was cheaper. That's usually the way I choose my books. I can't always afford hard covers and regular paperbacks are almost as expensive. Whenever there's a pocket edition available, I'll buy it, because it saves me money and at the end of the day I'm reading the exact same book, just not as "big" and "pretty". Maybe it's because I'm not a purist, but as long as I'm reading a physical copy (cause I'm not a fan of e-books) I'm happy!

Whatever is the cheapest version is the version I buy just cause that's what my budget can afford. I can totally understand why the mix and match look on a shelf would bother some people though. Fortunately it doesn't bug me. Gives me "overcrowded used book store" vibes and I love it.

Yep, I completely get that. That's why a lot of my series are mix/matched. I have hardcovers for half the series, then paperback with the others because I just go for cheaper options. Bargain sites, thrift stores, I'm not picky at all. It's nice to have a matching series but honestly, I just wanna read the books, I don't care about how they look unless it's a serious I ADORE then I sometimes let myself get it if I have the money to
I usually buy the pocket but sometimes I'm so willing to get the last one of a thrilogy or similar then I may buy the big one because I don't want to wait until the pocket version of it. 😅
I also like the pocket versions more because I can travel with them. And it's not the same with an ebook for me. And because the space at my appartment. I'd love to have a bookshelf like yours but then we couldn't be in that room at the same time.🥲
Actually I love pocket books! Pocket editions are very common in the UK, for instance, and living in a European city I go about in public transportation a lot and don't even own a car. Pocket books are perfect to carry with me in a small bag whereas those bigger editions are just to heavy and don't fit anywhere... And I love reading on the subway!
About those short covers- is this some sort of attempt at being seductive? Like if a person were to slowly slip a bit of clothing off? The book is like, “ooOoOh! Look at my beautiful, sexy pages! You know you want to read me!”

Oh and one more thing! I read a lot of translated books. We need a law that makes sure publishers translate the whole Trilogy ect and don't stop publishing at Vol. 2. 😢😖
One of the most heartbreaking things I experience quite frequently: destroyed books in deliveries. Always though.
Pocket books are a huge market in France and a plus for people who doesn't have space and have a little buget too. And they are really easy to grab on a trip or when you are outside and you don't want to bring the big seize. I love to take (sometimes) the pocket version when I have a little purse and I want to read in the public transportation or at the beach.
I hate the stickers!!! All the stickers! First of all the ones printed on the cover, i will not buy the book, like not a chance in hell. The actual stickers sometimes are a pleasure to remove, but some of them are the paper stickers....and they never come off properly, you need a blow dryer or glue removal. I just hate stickers!
I agree with you on everything, maybe not on pocketbooks, because at the end of the day you can use the same argument against any special edition, they are all a cash grab and meant to attract more people into buying them. Unlike special editions, pocketbooks are actually useful as they are so small you can carry them in a pocket.
Yes! If I’m going to buy the book I’m also spending the money on having a beautiful cover design that I want to look at. If they’re going to ruin it with a permanent sticker than I will not offer them my money.
Lemon essential oil.. Removes all stickers.. Only need a little to go a long way.. (dnt use on plastic.. It melts plastic)
I LOVE pocket books, it’s definitely a space issue and I wish there was a way to be able to order a mini book version of any book, not just some Uber popular ones we already have a billion versions of. Great video!

Can not tell you how many times I had to look up a book for the description so I know which is next.
In Japan, books are pretty much all ‘mini’ sized paperbacks, and thats, of course, because of lack of space and a care for environment, and also probably because miniature/mono stuff is kind of their aesthetic/whats they’re used to. I remember seeing this girl in a train in Japan reading a book while standing. She was holding it with one hand - smol paperback with removed cover jacket - and she flipped the page with her thumb, of the same hand she held the book with, no sweat.
Anyway, I think if not only ‘popular’ books would be part of the ‘mini’ trend, but all books would get this treatment, it would be nice. Thats not the case in most countries tho.
Pocket sized books: I'm for them because I can stick them in my pocket comfortably.
The snobbery regarding the Self pub vs trad pub is not just about readers, but also writers. A good number of writers will not pick up a book if they find out it's been self published. I would say it's a small number of people, but my interactions tell me otherwise, and there are great books out there that were self published.
The tiktok stickers actually make me hesitant to buy a book. If I saw that on a book, I'd be like, 'huh, this must be a totally mediocre book.'

3 other peeves: when ebook covers switch (at least give me a choice!) and hardbacks that don’t have a dust jacket. Most hardbacks have them, but some don’t and I really with they would. 3 - when there’s different covers for UK editions that are so much cooler than the US cover. I can think of so many versions I would buy if they were available in the US.
The unaligned sleeves is literally every single brandon sanderson book I have and it drives me INSANE!

The not big enough covers on paperbacks are usually called stepbacks and they were and I think still somewhat are a fairly popular thing in romance novels, especially the trade paperback kind. I am not as well versed as to why they came into popularity but for the most part, the stepback used to showcase the full cover artwork on the inside, without the text and titles.
Personally I really enjoy those artwork stepbacks but now the more common kind is just having testimonials of the book being displayed and I absolutely hate that!!
Like, publishers should not make stepbacks just because. At least have something interesting on the inside, I don't care what the New York Times has said about the book. They're not the reason I am going to pick the book up!

The idea I see it for special editions is that it's nice to have a good looking edition of a single book, but it's not to own the complete collection. I, the ever zealous completist, find this very difficult to say. However, you likely already own a collection, the special edition is more like a memento of that story than the story itself.
If they release the rest in the series, that's just a bonus.
I’ll be honest, I don’t pick up books with A Thing of Blank and Blank titles anymore. Most of the time I don’t even look at the synopsis because the titles annoy me so much. I know how petty that must sound
As a book lover/collector I completely agree with you on special edition series! As someone who works in publishing, I also understand that it is incredibly difficult to find a solution because sales do play a huge part otherwise you run the risk of being wasteful in both cost and stock.
The Lunar Chronicles new paperbacks have a stepback aka an illustration inside and they are beautiful! Stepbacks are very common in romance mass market editions, that little cut is to indicate it. I wish more editions of tall paperbacks had it :)
I’m the same with special editions, I will wait until all of them are out! I don’t like mixing and matching them if they only do the first one. There are some series where I see how it would make sense to just do the first book because it is vastly more popular, but it still irks me. I’m a big Anne of Green Gables fan and so many publishers put out beautiful editions of the first one but then none of the others. Ugh! I also struggle when I discover a beautiful edition too late and the box set is already sold out, and not all of the books are still available! I currently have that problem with a super pretty Anne edition of Tundra Books that I recently discovered, but the only books I managed to find so far are 1,2,3, - 5&8! So weird, especially since books 4,6,7 are hard to find/sold out in other editions as well. I am rambling now so I’ll stop haha, but this really is a pet peeve of mine.
I too am an AOGG collector - there's that beautiful hardcover set where it all makes one textual image and yet its only the first 5 books, terribly annoying
I'm noticing a lot of book titles along the trend of "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo", so for example you might have "The Nine Chalices of Wizard Tod" or whatever, and it makes it incredibly difficult to remember any one individual title. Like, I know for sure there's another "The Seven ____ of_____" something book that came out in the last few years, but can't for the life of me remember it right now.

Oh my goodness the rage that builds up if I think out those step back covers on paperbacks. If I am on the fence about buying a book and then I take it out and it has THAT for a cover I will put the book back so fast
As a comics mostly reader, variable transparency on whether a new run or a new book is meant to be an ongoing or if it’s designed as a miniseries. Yes, they do kind of need to see how a book does but at the same time if a book is intended to be only 4-6 issues or 12 issues regardless of sales or popularity can they just be upfront about it. Also, it’s totally fine if a trade paperback or hardcover is the first way a comic gets published as floppies get inconvenient over time.
I have the hobbit and LOTR in the hardback pocket edition set. I ordered them not realizing that they were pocket-size, but the price was good for the whole set. They are well-made books and the dust jackets have Tolkien's art design. The size does have its pros and cons. The print is a bit small, but they are easy to carry in a jacket pocket or purse.
I'm raging each time when the same publisher doesn't keep the same size of books in the book series... I have trilogies where one book sticks out or a series of 6 books where second to last sticks out. WHY????!!! I would understand if it was a different publisher but this? The recent that got me in a twist was the size of The Hunger of the Gods by J.Gwynne. Orbit has always been keeping series the same size but for whatever reason HoG BARELY fits in a shelf and is humongous compared to Shadow of the Gods.
Another one of mine is the stiff paperback issue...it's so incredibly difficult to read when you don't want to break the spine! More often than not I get cramps in my wrists as I'm trying to read these.
The third annoyance that I have is when I see bookstores full of people around Xmas time and during the rest of the year, they're empty. It makes me so angry. As if books were only convenient when you don't know what to give to people. Books should not be treated as a last resort. It's upsetting.
As a not-natural-bookworm but one who actively tries really hard to get through books..I find the titles with "blank of blank and blank" to be a horrible turn off. It makes me assume that its going to be garbage. I have caved and read a few of those titles but most of the time my intuition is right.
I totally do the same with waiting for the subsequent books in special editions to be announced before buying the first one. I really want them to match 🤣🧡

I can relate with the book covers pet peeve. For example, I bought the netflix six of crows edition of the book because I loved it and really wanted to read, but I want the covers to match if I buy the rest. The first shadow and bone cover does, but will they make matching covers for the rest of the series?
Also, if there are sets for different books that go together, I wish you can buy each book individually if you do not want to buy the whole set especially since they are so expensive. But that is a me thing, mostly.
Stickers never bothered me because I am so used to them, but as I got older, i have a small hate for the permanent stickers because they cover the author’s name or are slab dab in the middle of the cover at times. I do not want to focus on the sticker. Bar codes on top of the summary on the back of the book annoy me so much because they interfere with how you get interested in the book or film.
My favorite thing about the "Noun of Noun and Noun" or "Noun of Noun" title is the gameshow Um, Actually.
It's all about nerdy stuff, and they sometimes do a game where they mix up all the nouns of 6 different books titles and the players have to try to create the correct book titles.
It is one of my obsessions currently and is one of the best things on RUclips. I suggest all nerds check it out, no matter what you are nerdy about 😊

Yes, all of these. Especially the sticker thing that you can't remove gets in my crawl and I won't buy a book based on it. And the misaligned spine..... ughhhhh. I also wait on all of the special editions before buying. I feel so seen LOL. Thanks for this video.

i love pocket editions! there are the ones i seek out first in a bookstore actually! i think they are economic in size and price, very cute, easy to transport (well easier than the big ones), 80% of time they do not need their spines cracked or even if you try, their spine doesn't crack at all (if they crack, it's probably signet classics). i think they all look together even if they aren't at all in series (when paired by edition house and all). they looks sleek, they are simple and its simpleness lets the content and words shine and speak for themselves. i wish i could put a photo of my folio collections especially so you see what i mean.
i'm talking about the folio collection or the folio classique collection at gallimard (books in french), i think of the pocket classiques at pocket (also books in french), i think also the signet classics (books in english), i think j'ai lu editions et éditions nomades, which all do pocket editions in the french language (except for signet classics). they give pretty much the same feel of owning penguin classics editions books but they don't crack, they are floppy, they range from 3.85$ cad to 13,50$ cad (most are actually 8.85$ cad or around) and they are french! what is not to love?

Completely agree with the special edition point!!! Or (as an addition to your point) when a book box or something gives out special editions of the first book, but then doesn't give those subscribers first dibs on the second/third if they released. I have been stung so many times because I've got the first book in a Fairyloot, but then the second books just go on general sale and I miss out!
I specifically decided to get the pocket editions of LOTR + the Hobbit that you pictured in the vid cause of their small form factor. Got the 4 books for around $25, and small enough to fit in my jacket pocket. I wish pocket books were as popular as in Japan so that I can buy more series and leave my ebook at home.

I have several. The dust jacket being one of them. I understand that it's meant to protect the book, but when it slides around all over the place when I'm trying to read the book, I can't stand that. I usually end up removing the dust jacket when I go to read the book. Then there's my bookshelf itself. Ask before you touch, return the book to the shelf you found it on, and if you put it back upside down, on it's side, or backwards with the pages sticking out, you can leave my house and never come back.
You know, I’ve always assumed that it’s standard to only keep the dust jackets on while the books aren’t in use. I figured that was the point, so they’re protected when set aside. Is that not the case?

I do adore pocket books because they are perfect for traveling. With paperbacks I really dislike breaking the spine but I don't want to travel with my hardback. I once ordered on by accident by John Scalzi and was moping after I found out only the first book in the trilogy got published as a pocket book.
Pet peeve of mine is when I do order a paperback I always seem to get the wrong dimensions. Why isn't there a standard size? Becky Chambers, a long way to an angry planet series, have all different dimensions and it drives me bonkers...
I agree with you about stickers on books. They should be removable. I just unintentionally got a small edition of one of my favorite classics - not sure if that is what you mean by minis. It is about the size of my hand. It is really cute. As long as I can read the print, I am okay with the size.
I like the mini copies of books for travel. If I want to read a book on a plane or at a beach I can bring more mini books than I would be able to with a full size paperback.
I imagine the pocket books must be great if you travel a lot and only have limited space, my editions of LOTR are small so really good for saving space and aren’t too heavy either but then you have the really mini editions and I always worry about how small the text is going to be so overall I’m pretty neutral over pocket editions 🤔
The dust jacket thing happened to me with Amari and the Night Brothers and I have considered sneakily swapping it for a different one in Barnes and Noble very many times lol.

Honestly, pocket books are cheaper in my experience, if you buy the whole serie at once. They look a bit weird on my shelf, but it's sometimes worth it to me.
Pocket books were for a time when we didn’t have ebooks. The whole point was for the size and ease of access.
I completely agree about the misaligned dust jacket. I bought the special edition of The Name of the Wind and the covers off. Bothers me to no end!
Are pocket books just the same as the mass paperback books? If so, they aren't my favorite things, but some older (and not so old, but not popular) books are so hard to find in hardcover and/or in paperback. So sometimes I just have to settle. Plus my local used book store resales them for $1, so I can't really complain when I'm running on a low budget sometimes.
Yyeessss on all of these!! Especially special editions, there's been a few I've been eyeing but I am such a stickler for my books matching!! 🙈 After buying all the first law stand alones as UK editions and discovering they were much smaller than my US original trilogy, I was a bit heartbroken. I just discovered the Robin Hobb farseer trilogy has all the illustrated editions out now though so I can't wait to jump on those!! As for pocket editions--I was obsessed with them as a teenager because they were cute (had a bunch of B&N pocket classics) but I can guarantee I didn't read a single one because they were annoying to hold for a stretch of time. Needless to say, I don't own them anymore. 🙈
I'm quite annoyed by the illustrated Farseer Trilogy, because they've made Fitz (and other people from Buck) white. But they are not, and I would image that Hobb at this point of her career would have more influence on the artwork, and also aren't we passed whitewashing characters now? (At least in some of the countries I hope. Where I'm from, in Hungary it's still quite common.)

I saw the art flipping through it at the store and liked it, but I haven't read the series yet (have the first on Kindle to try before I commit to a physical set) so I didn't have any context and didn't want to browse too much in case of spoilers. I still might get just because I love the covers, but I like the UK paperback covers too so I may just get those to save money, instead... Oof. Decisions. 😣 (And unfortunately no, I don't think we'll ever be totally past white washing. For every correct interpretation of something in art, there's about 10 versions that are inexplicably Caucasian. 🤦♀️)
As a writer who sucks at coming up with titles, I don't mind the publishers picking titles so much.
I don't know how I feel about the pocket books, but I do wish they made the mass market paperbacks more than the trade paperbacks. Is it too much to hope for books being less than ten bucks? Lol.

You are not alone with the special editions. I want the special edition of Leviathan Wakes so bad but if I have it set up next to my paperback collection … it will effectively be an eyesore … even if it only offends my OCD. A whole set like that would be amazing but I’m not going to spend the money on hoping they release them either.
The tiktok thing will also date the book so mich in like 3 years. Also you never saw the as seen on RUclips stickers!

Ugh! Misaligned spines are so frustrating 😤 It takes so much effort to get them right again - where they inevitably end up with creases, but if I don't correct them, it's going to bother me for hours after every single time I look at it🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️ I really envy the people who aren't frustrated by all these little things😅😅🙈
I used to not be a fan of the stepbacked cover, but I find I can forgive it if it's got some neat art or something hidden underneath. I also like books with a sort of cutout in the cover and peeks through to the art below.
I like mini stuff... so I have been slowly collecting the mini throne of glass books! I wish more publishing companies would do this!!! I really like the three I have so far... they are cute!
I own both the TOG minis and the Rithmatist mini.....the TOG ones are kind of waste of space, but the Rithmatist I got on accident because I like the new cover and didn't realize it was mini online. I will say that it was VERY handy to put in my jacket pocket to take to the gym, but otherwise...it just doesn't look good on a shelf with normal sized books.

I'm not new to fantasy and I mistake the "Shadow of_____" books all the time. It doesn't help that the covers are all kind of similar.
One book trend I hate above all others is a character-cried-wolf scenario when they actually saw what happened yet none believe. Thrilled as I was to see the "Fear Street Relaunch" series hit the shelves, I was irritated to no end by "Don't Stay Up Late" and ranted about it on my BookTube channel.
We had mini versions of acatar and random books that kept being moved around and damaged until they were just returned at a loss were I work. Sooo annoying trying to get these displayed and sold. Outside of stocking stuffers I don’t see how they could be comfortable reading, the binding is terrible.
I really like the updated uk covers of the Witcher series! But they do have the permanent Netflix promo sticker on the covers sooooo maybe not perfect haha
I got that mini Rithmatist edition by accident from bookdepository and I was so upset, when I opened the box. I did not check the size unfortunately, but it did not cross my mind that it would be a pocket book. I generally don’t like small books, I find the standard UK paperbacks really small and less floppy vs the US editions. I also really hate when they do not reprint hardcovers and if you discover a series by the time the 2nd book is out and you can’t buy the 1st one anymore in hardcover and the 2nd is not yet out in paperback…. yikes. And the worst thing is when you can only get mass market paperback editions that are so miniscule and terrible to read (I’m looking at you, Malazan).

By pocket books do you mean mass market paperback as well? Some books I've purchased are only available in this style, and it's a little irritating as I prefer trade paperback over any style.
I bought the leatherbound version of LOTR when the movie came out. To spend any less would have meant to be stuck with modern actors' faces on the cover of a timeless book. If they had done that for Narnia during the 8's BBC movies they would have made it dated and silly once the newer movies were made. Given most books are superior than movies (especially in the eyes of readers) than the movies adaptations don't offend readers hoping to suck in moviegoers. The numbers are against you.
Also, I got the Eye Of The World SE and loved it with it's attached bookmark. It's sad that the rest couldn't be purchased that way given none of the Wheel of Time books are under 600 pages.
So one of my pet peeves: when different versions ebook covers of the same book, cost different amounts. Specifically when I want a set to match. And the costing is ridiculous. So for some editions where covers are different, the ebook costs alot more depending on cover. And when I've bought the 1st ebook in series with a specific cover, the 2nd book with matching ebook cover costs alot more, so you go for the more affordable version with a different cover. Anyone else?
if you use Calibre (a free software) you can edit your ebook covers and then re-import the books into your reading app of choice (you can also send the books directly to your e-reader as Calibre is a library management software). This does require breaking the DRM on ebooks, but I personally don't have an issue with this if its an ebook you've purchased.
ETA: I hate when ebook covers aren't the same size on the ereader - I have to go in an edit them; its too annoying hahaha
The Witcher has a beautiful UK cover. I managed to find the full set on eBay. Season of Storms is taller than the rest, unfortunately!
Pocket books are usually for travel so you don't have to carry around a full-sized book that could make your bag heavier, especially if you're going away for a while and wanna bring a whole 5-book series with you to read.
Also, printing those minibooks doesn't take money away from other authors, that'd be like saying special edition prints take money away from other authors.
If they only made a SE of Ninth Rain I would still buy it 😂 - but I’d LOVE a full set. For shorter series I love when they just release the full series at once like Poppy War etc (which would be AMAZING for Winnowing Flame!)
The tiktok thing is so funny! I also like the tables and stuff. Yesterday at my library, there was a display of witchy books with this huge photo of the quote “HER SISTER WAS A WITCH, RIGHT?” And I immediately laughed. However, I don’t want any fake stickers on my books no matter what they say. 😖😖
Also my biggest pet peeve now for audio books is when they change a voice actor for whatever reason mid series. Which is fine if there were conflicts or something legitimate issues. But the problem for me is when the voice actor preforming the book is just garbage. And the actor is great in other books but this one is like no difference in inflection for separate characters. Or the whole story has very little culture in it. For those of you who listen to audio books know what I mean!
A really big pet peeve of mine is when the description of the book is not where it is supposed to be. So I mean like on paperbacks it should be on the back of the book and on hardbacks it should be on the cover inside flap. I should not have to search a book inside and out to find a description and have blurbs by other authors be where the description should be. I also hate deckled edges with a fiery passion because it shouldn't be that much work to flip the page.

I pre-ordered a Signed Special Edition (1st run 1st edition) and it came with 3... that THREE effing "stickers" haphazardly slapped on the jacket of the book, but it was the "Barnes and Noble Exclusive" sticker that guaranteed it would be the last time I purchase an exclusive offer from them. Stickers need to be easily removable vinyl instead of a blight on the original jacket that devalues the collectors item.
omg i agree with the special edition one like the fist book in dune has so many special editions but not the other ones.. like i get it, its 6 books but theres SO MANY first editions one of them couldve done the rest too
I completely agree about the first book getting a special edition! I’m not buying the new illustrated edition of the last wish because if they don’t do it for sword of destiny, I don’t really want it 🤣
i actually really like the "a ___ of ___ & ____" title trend. every time someone tells me "ughhh these titles again, so dumb right!?" i just have to smile and nod because everyone seems to feel so strongly about them and i feel like a silly tumblr girl or something for liking them so much hahaha i can see how they'd be repetitive though
Pocket books… I have feelings. I carry pocket sized books when my anxiety is really high. Re-reading a comfort book or poem can help (me personally) talk myself down from going into a full (take me to the hospital) panic attack.
I don’t know why they make them… but that is why I like them. Randomly found them when I was like sixteen - before I even knew what anxiety was lol those tiny Austen books barns and noble came out with… huge help. Life changing.
Input e had some hardcovers where the defined ‘spine’ of the book isn’t as wide as the actual spine of the book so there is no way to make it fit nicely without seeing part of the front or back cover on the spine and I hate it so much
