I will never forget driving the lead vehicle at Mid South in 2020 in the incredible mud and seeing your amazing focus and determination. You are indeed a very special athlete. Beautiful production as well. Chapeaux.
Wow! Cheers to CC for capturing this inspirational story. And to Hannah .. your successful attempt put your name in the history books. But your return to that trail after even completing the first attempt sealed your status as a Cat 1 LadyBOSS!! And I loved seeing you and your husband tackle this together. I hope you can draw strength from this for years to come when life's race gets tough.
Just love how emotionally intelligent you are in addition to all of your physical strengths. I feel like I learn something about mindset every time I hear you speak. Congratulations on two incredible rides!
Seeing you collapse on the 1st attempt was tough. You’re such an incredible competitor to challenge yourself like that Hannah, so glad you went back and made it happen. The production on the video was great, I really enjoyed it.

All my respect to you. You are an inspiration! Love the production quality. The story and your message we will keep in our hearts in the ride and in the day.
I was already satisfied and inspired, and then 'attempt #2' flashed on the screen 😮. Amazing job and such beautiful scenery. I've been to Moab before but that was before I got into mtb so I need to revisit!
Who cares about the people who WHINE about the film crews. I think it's great that we're able to see this and also your film in inspiring young people, especially girls, to be able to go out and do these things. I applaud you all who use film crews. I don't applaud the people who boohoo about it. To heck with them!
17:49 - that insane hiking trail reminds of the “Hillary Steppe” near the top of the Mount Everest climb. It seems like having a multi day camp where the only thing one does is ride and hike those last 12+ miles over and over again for practice and memorization would be beneficial for anyone’s future FKT attempts.
Awesome job, motivated me while knocking out The Chimneys +2, my final workout this week. PS: You're my wife's favorite person on the Trainerroad podcast.
I became ill at work with a fever but still had to cycle home from the train. It was about 50 degrees and windy and I was shivering like crazy. The last half mile to the house was one of the most challenging physical and mental experiences I've ever had. Thank you for sharing your story on the trail, Hannah.
33:39 - Hannah, you already know that your first FKT ride was definitely not a failure. You survived a trial by fire (and ice) that 99.99% of people who can even ride a mountain bike would have quit on within the first two hours. I’ve been hearing your name in the bicycling world since 2009, you have never been a failure. Congratulations on achieving a very lofty goal.👍👍
Hannah is my hero and a shining example for my daughters that they can do really hard things on a bike. Even better is how you pushed through "failure" in order to achieve your goal.....sorry...not achieve your goal....you blew it out of the water. Thank you to all those involved in this for documenting it (gorgeous footage) so I can share this with my girls and learn from this amazing accomplishment.
Why are film crews considered so taboo on FKTs and ultra endurance events? It’s so annoying that there has to be a caveat on these types of videos about whether it counts or not. These riders are awesome and it’s great they want to share this with audiences. They just need to do what video game speedrunning does where they split the categories (glitchless vs no major glitches, etc.) In this case like film crew vs no film crew or whatever and just put it in its own category and let the people make their own decision. Maybe they already do this or maybe nobody even really cares that much in the grand scheme of things and I’m just dumb for not researching more 😂. Anyways great vid and thanks for sharing!
Because having a " safety net" follow you the whole time gives you an unfair advantage over those who are truly attempting it unsupported. Knowing that if you push too hard they will jump in and help you is supported not unsupported
@@Mr050278 I’m trying to understand that logic but I guess it still doesn’t make sense to me. You push too hard and the film crew helps you, which would disqualify the attempt vs pushing too hard on your own and the local search and rescue crew has to come get you, which still invalidates your attempt. I’m not an FKT expert by any means, just an enjoyer who likes watching the YT vids, so I’m totally open to the idea that I probably just don’t understand the spirit of the rules like others would.
Because there is a very accessible safety net people push harder and take more risks. So if search and rescue is the only safety net, and you must use it, in theory your gonna be there for a while it’s gonna be an epic just to get picked up by SAR. But there is categories for these efforts. Have a film crew is supposed to be a supported effort. But that’s not really the records most people want. FKT’s that are unsupported but have a film crew and don’t utilize it at all will have an asterisk next to it saying there was a film crew (moral support) Honestly I agree with you. It’s silly. And I probably know too much about this silly thing but there are people that will fight and figuratively die over this silly little aspect of an already niche activity
@chrismikstas2871 yes having them help would disqualify the effort but knowing help is following you is a big mental advantage over being alone and knowing that if you for example pass out from heat exhaustion no one is coming for potentially a long time. That gives you the confidence to push harder than you would if you were alone
@@Mr050278 Doing this "unsupported with nobody coming for a long time" is a hella stupid basis to do this stuff on. You'd be an idiot to attempt something like this without people close and on standby waiting for you to arrive at certain times.
What an amazing accomplishment. Even on the first attempt it was a few obstacles that slowed you down, but you were still unstoppable.🙌🏼 Congratulations beating the record six months later , way to go !!! 🔥🔥
Loved everything about this. You are such an incredible rider and inspiration to us all. Great job! Now, for the most import part- Where did yo get that pancake griddle and will you share your secret pancake recipe? :-)
Great ride and beautiful footage. All the motivational talk at the start feels like a big ego trip, though. Let's keep things in perspective here - it's just a bike ride.
Hannah is an amazing athlete and this is amazing achievement, also videography is top notch. I found all the talk about how hard it is and how it changed her a bit too much though, not sure, maybe it's just my perspective from a non american. The talk feels a little pretentious and I don't think you need that, but again, I am just an anonymous post on the internet, so nevermind me, this is still an amazing achievement!
Simply amazing. Go back in mid October when the weather is perfect. Also, question: did you hear that podcast by those nerdy radio lab people on NPR who researched and showed that having a spouse and film crew on the course actually adds up to emotional support, which gives quite a boost to the racer. I think the show is called Alone Enough. It’s why Lael Wilcox no longer has her spouse and film crew on Tour Divide race and AZT race. Who knew?!!
Once you start playing that rhetorical game you can interpret almost anything as “emotional support.” Wilcox, for example, is sponsored. Isn’t that “support?” Is using a modern bike “support?” Modern nutrition? Modern weather “support”? Having two parents and a good childhood? Depends on how much of a jerk you want to be. Who knew?!! Thus, it’s sophistry; utter BS, other agendas. Support is support. She was unsupported on these rides, period. ☮️
@ivanryz the sanctioning body makes the rules but i believe its having any kind of support during the event. Physical emotional supplies etc. Her effort was clearly in the supported category. Still a great performance but not unsupported. And yes i did a long ride in a very desolate area about a month ago and i can definitely say that knowing that you are all alone miles from help definitely makes a difference !
@@Mr050278 physical(mechanical or pushing) = there wasn't any. emotional(talking)=there wasn't any. supplies(she carried everything). ETC= keep it open ended to possibly put her effort down to make yourself feel better? There are bystanders. Anyone can watch. I believe watching isn't supporting. Do you believe observing = support? A tour divide observer=support for that rider? Maybe your idea can be defined as an invisible ride. So riders have to hide from anyone watching. Call it a GhostKT. The athletes that attempt FKT'S don't need to deal with rules made up after the FKT has been around for so long already.
@ivanryz i dont make the rules but i do understand and agree with them. Having your friends or family following you is an advantage over someone who does it alone and unsupported. Knowing you can push it as hard as you want and someone is close to help makes a difference on your effort. Like i said still an impressive supported effort but lets not disrespect the competitors who followed the rules nor the sanctioning body who made the rules that she was very aware of beforehand
