Awesome stuff. The secret here seems to be...Lane is just more athletic than 99% of OTs. You touched on it briefly, usually it's been the fast strong athletic DEs against the slow fat guy OTs where the only advantage they have is arm length and mass. So the prevailing technique usually is to use that length, to get their arms on the DE first to contain them, then use that power/mass to overwhelm them. If they use speed the goal is to keep those arms on them and ride them upfield. DE technique evolves into anticipating the initial hands from the OT and learning counter moves to use the OT's reach against them. AKA when you know what's coming you can plan to counter it. And then OTs are trained to watch for and anticipate this handfighting and counter moves etc. But it's all predicated on the OTs making the first move. Lane is athletic enough that he throws that whole pass rush meta on its head. 99% of OTs fall into 2 categories. Huge behemoths with length/power but slow feet and their focus is that huge kick-step because they know they are weak against speed rushes so they compensate with those huge kicks. This leaves them open to inside counters, and they frequently get beat around the edge because they're just too slow. The others are athletic with good footspeed but they just don't have the power to stop good bullrushers. They can wall off the edge against speed, but anybody who can turn speed to power or just straight bullrush off the snap will give them fits. Lane is elite in both facets. That's the difference. He has that elite footspeed that he doesn't have to lead with huge kick steps off the snap, but he also has plenty of power to stop bullrushes. So because he doesn't have to lead with huge kick steps, he can wait for the DE to declare an outside speed rush before defending it. Knowing if they convert it to power he can still handle it without getting bowled over. 99% of OTs cannot get away with this because, as mentioned, if they get on their heels and give ground etc they get overwhelmed by speed-to-power. Throwing the DEs normal pass rush meta on its head and making "counterpunching" his primary technique is proving effective for a guy athletic enough to get away with it. And I would imagine this works against most all pass rushers he faces, because he's simply more athletic and mentally prepared they are. He lets them declare first and reacts with either speed or power to neutralize their first move. And by the time the DE reacts to that counter, you're already pushed 3-4 seconds and it's too late to get home anyway. What I would be interested in is seeing is how Lane fares when he plays strictly against those ELITE elite pass rushers, to see if this throws a wrench Lane's play. Garrett, Bosa, Watt etc. Watt didn't play when Philly played the Steelers last year, and Lane did give up 2 of his 11 pressures against SF. Still no sacks, but did Bosa give him more trouble on a per-snap basis than usual. And then how does Lane react over the course of those games to facing an elite rusher. Anyways, great stuff.
I hope we see someone develop something against it but I don't really see how defenders have any other option. They HAVE to get to the qb so if he doesn't hit first the def HAS to make that first move. Lane has such a strategic advantage on them just from how the game works that adding his elite athleticism on top is proving to be genuinely unbeatable. For now, at least.
I couldn’t tell you his specific technique against elite rushers, but I say with certainty that he always wins those matchups. Micah Parsons struggled every time he plays him.
Also I think the Bosa giving him trouble narrative is probably not really a thing. I wouldn’t read too much into 2 given up pressures as much as just watching the film.
@@joeynickles7962Not sure the exact rule, but what looks like Lane Johnson false starting, is considered him timing the snap and is allowed. Only for tackles tho
Think about that. Hasn’t allowed a sack since November 22, 2020. Carson Wentz was the QB then. I’m sure most, if not all of his sacks given up that year were Wentz’s fault for hold the ball forever
Jalen Carter is going to bully every O-line in front of him and slot if that success will be down to the likes of Lane ( himself an absolute stud at his position ). Kelce , Graham etc will all help Carter off the field also . Is Lane the best at his position from players of past 10 years? I think so....

@@temp-td2uk rule 7 section 4 ARTICLE 2. FALSE START It is a False Start if the ball has been placed ready for play, and, prior to the snap, an offensive player who has assumed a set position charges or moves in such a way as to simulate the start of a play, or if an offensive player who is in motion makes a sudden movement toward the line of scrimmage. Any quick abrupt movement by a single offensive player, or by several offensive players in unison, which simulates the start of the snap, is a false start.
@@temp-td2uk my apologies I was traveling and could not respond soon enough. The “step” RT Johnson makes prior to ball being snapped “simulates the start of a play”.

The best
Best tackle at using the false start loophole. It’s some BS for us Niner fans but hate the game not the player
Armstead literally does the same exact thing. Every great OT does.
What’s the “false start loophole”?
49er fans really are the whinest bitches in the NFL my god.
@@joeynickles7962Not sure the exact rule, but what looks like Lane Johnson false starting, is considered him timing the snap and is allowed. Only for tackles tho
So classy
Think about that. Hasn’t allowed a sack since November 22, 2020. Carson Wentz was the QB then. I’m sure most, if not all of his sacks given up that year were Wentz’s fault for hold the ball forever
Good point John, he made it through one of the most sack prone QBs and came out unscathed
Unenlightened minds will call him beta, but he is sigma hahaha
that's my dog.
Do cj gardner johnson next
No
Jalen Carter is going to bully every O-line in front of him and slot if that success will be down to the likes of Lane ( himself an absolute stud at his position ). Kelce , Graham etc will all help Carter off the field also .
Is Lane the best at his position from players of past 10 years? I think so....
@-mik46
Whassup
LJ has long arms so it’s hard for them to one arm him.
He was on the floor vs the chiefs 😂😂😂
That field was garbage to play on. Everyone was slipping. One play had 6 guys on the ground.
My OT can be on the floor all he wants if he's allowing 0 pressures like he did
Striking pass rushers first is risky business.
The guy gets a full second head start on everyone should be a penalty.
i still find it to be crazy how he hasn't allowed a sack since 2020 considering the eagles will never give him help. never see chips on his man or double teams of any kind. just leave him on an island
He is left on an island more than anybody in the league. I think Tristan Wirfs was second
@@AlexRollinsNFL not just left out there more than anybody else. He's left out there 100% of the passing plays.
@4:31 let it play and you can see RT Johnson moving before the snap
He doesn’t move his planting foot. It’s not false start
@@temp-td2uk rule 7 section 4 ARTICLE 2. FALSE START
It is a False Start if the ball has been placed ready for play, and, prior to the snap, an offensive player who has assumed a set position charges or moves in such a way as to simulate the start of a play, or if an offensive player who is in motion makes a sudden movement toward the line of scrimmage.
@Moose Tavarez. It’s hard to see when the ball moves due to the sky cap. But if you look at Kelce, especially his right heel, lane and him move simultaneously. So lane might moved before the ball but so do all centers in the game
Best OL in the NFL. Not just the best RT in the NFL.
So sad - I watched and enjoyed this entire video. However its 11:16 with no reference to "Wide Ass Open "
Don't worry, you need do nothing, as this another masterpiece. Its me that needs to adjust :)
Thanks brother!
This is actually a sumo technique to stop the sumo bull rush...interesting...
I can't believe you didn't mention how fast he is off the snap. Almost too fast lol. I know it was a technique video tho
You're right, I should have. There were a couple clips in the video where it is just insane
Why does he not play left tackle
He was supposed to replace Jason peters but peters played longer than expected. He just became so dominate they left him there. Plus by the time peters needed replacing the eagles had mailata and dillard.
@@CG89119 Ok that makes sense
C G nailed it below
Because 99% of QBs are right handed the left is the QBs blind spot also where the best pass rushers line up meaning that's where the teams beat pass blocker will be...
Bro is snorlax
Do you think the jets defense is overrated? I’m afraid it is.
Not really, they have a super deep DL and some great pieces in the secondary
4:31 false start lol
If u pay really close attention he’s literally instantaneous with Kelce snap, it’s just the rest of the line is slower than him… majority of the time
@@udaymittal5598 you’re right
If you watch every snap closely, he does it like 60% of the time. It's really impressive actually
@@AlexRollinsNFL thank you!
