    This is a golden gem of what we were taught as Have-Have-Want-Want:
    (Have CO2) (Have RR) = (Want CO2) (Want RR) Put in 'x' to solve for what you will change on vent! But it never occurred to be to also do with Ve! So AWESOME!

    You just don't how valuable this information is especially when the schools don't put a lot of emphasis on these formulas! Thank you so much. So if you had a patient with severe ARDS would these same formulas work correctly? Even for the video you did on oxygenation?

      You are very welcome. Without rewatching the video, I would say yes, disease process doesn't typically alter the validity of the formula.

    Very helpful videos.

    I want to know how these formulas apply to pressure control mode of ventilation?

      They do, you just have to understand that in PC your TV is not set and will vary based on RAW, static compliance, and patient synchrony. If your TV is fairly regular, then yes, you can make pressure changes...which will effect TV...which will effect Ve...which will effect Co2...which will effect pH. Just know that this will vary in PC. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

    But these formulas works only when patient is fully sedated and relax

    Thank you sir, quick question if the patient has a high co2, but the pH is in range, should you leave the vent settings as is, since the pH is still in range.

    How long does this formula typically take to work? If I change my rate from 14 to 16 to achieve a lower CO2, when will the gas correct? An hour? Thanks

      Depends on the severity of the abnormality, but typically CO2 responds quickly to changes in minute ventilation. An etco2 would reveal changes immediately and perhaps stabilize within 15-30 minutes. Again though, this is dependent upon various factors.

    What about pc if pt is on pc mode

      If in PC the same rules apply. Adjust pressure to get tidal volume into appropriate range first, then consider adjusting rate. Thanks for watching and commenting with a great question.
