    My biggest reasons: Once installed I never have to go online to use it (security and all that). I own the program; and upgrades to date have all been free- so... economics. Plus add the color page.

  • @rano12321
    @rano12321 7 месяцев назад +28

    For most people the color page was the reason to switch, Ik I'm a minority here but for me, Fusion was the biggest reason to switch because just like 99% of hard core premiere and after effects users I resented the idea of ever using nodes. It seemed overcomplicated, unnecessary and useless to me, oh how naïve I was, it only took me 2/3 videos of comparing nodes vs layers and my life literally changed. It's been 3 years and I edit and do VFX as my job and I haven't touch Premiere or AE for 3 years now, I'm so used the whole logical nature of nodes that I can't even use photoshop anymore because once you go nodes, there's no coming back.

    • @beninua
      @beninua 7 месяцев назад +1

      I kind of agree and use nodes myself, but I find it very hard to explain in a meaningful way to people that are used to layers from Adobe (or other NLE). What introductory videos on for instance RUclips would you recommend as the best to teach someone both the basics of nodes, and then slowly increase to the more sophisticated bells and whistles. I personally use Skillshare for many things, and there are a lot of good courses on DVR including excellent courses on Fusion and Color Grading but I also know that many people find Skillshare to be a tad expensive, so are there any RUclips content creators out there that you recommend when people ask where they should search for good content explaining nodes in Fusion?

    • @rano12321
      @rano12321 7 месяцев назад +5

      @@beninua For me it worked out very well when I watched some comparisons on YT and tried to do anything other than some very basic stuff. The analogy that made the most sense for me was thinking the video/image like water and the nodes are like a plumbing system where it flows through the pipes, if you wanna affect it, just chain up nodes as effects in between media in and out and if you wanna merge two different sources then use a merge node. Very simple. Realistically layer based compositing such as After effects works by emulating physical film compositing where Nodes work by emulating digital compositing which makes it a lot more logical, visual and flexible. I've mostly learned about Fusion from YT by watching tutorials, for beginner of course I'd recommend Casey Faris, he has bunch of very nice introductory courses for Fusion but for more intermediate to advanced stuff there are many channels including the original developer of Fusion Eyeon software on YT, channels like Pirates of Confusion, Milolab tuts, VFX Study, Prophetless, Nomad R Productions, Jake Wipp, Swatara Media, Ryan Osborne, Patrick Sterling etc.

    Talking about interface customizing, @Matt, I will say NO to Davinci Resolve on that, reasons because Premiere Pro is more customizable and helping pro editor to do that to our timeline interface. For instance, if I'm working on a movie scoring, I used to customized my Bin area to the numbers of the sequences created and open all the sequence down for easy access to any materials I needed.

  • @DarrellMartinelli47
    @DarrellMartinelli47 7 месяцев назад +8

    Hi Matt. If you do not want to use a custom workspce in PP all you have to do is one click and you are back to the standard edit layout or color layout. So you are not stuck using the cutom workspace.

    • @beninua
      @beninua 7 месяцев назад +2

      For me that's not the problem. In Adobe Premiere wanted a workspace that was NOT the custom workspace, which is lacking so many of the functions I use all the time. But in Adobe I either had to use a triple monitor setup where I divided all my panels in use over the three monitors and had a fourth preview monitor on the wall above my desk (a 4K 60" TV). I recently grew tired of the three monitor setup and opted for one 57 inch 32:9 UltraWide Dual UHD monitor (7,680 x 2,160 @ 240Hz/1ms/HDR), which gives me the same real-estate) and I of course still have the large 4K TV on the wall above my desk as a preview screen.
      For that purpose Resolve is absolutely perfect.
      Before I had 4 different workspaces and I switched between them with shortcuts 1-4 mid-project to close some panels and open others, so they would fit the next step in the process. And switching workspace with an extreme amount of panels open and perhaps 24 tracks of footage and audio is no joke. The switching itself was fast due to fast hardware, but Adobe didn't always remember the position of the panels in the saved layout, so the panels that should stay on one screen overlapped another after a few switches back and forth.
      Besides I still had to open After Effects all the time for all my 3d work and animations.
      The thing I miss the most is Audition that I really loved. But after having practiced with the built in Fairlight tab for audio I see how good that really are, and it's support for VST/VST3 plugins leaves nothing to be desired. And no matter what tab I am in, I can always see the preview of my video a

    Reason 3 - I agree but also one thing to consider is that Premiere user will more likely adapt After Effects easily because its still timeline and layer based. Meanwhile Fusion in Davinci is COMPLETELY different. If you are used to AE timeline+layer editing, then fusion feels like electrical engineering, forget everything you learned in AE. You need to create bunch of nodes, make the keyframes inside different nodes and connect them together in correct order. It looks like electrical diagram where you connect all the transitors and resistors and light bulbs together with wires and one wrong connection, the whole thing doesnt work(and you have no idea where you are doing it wrong).
    But its very capable once you get hang of it and those node diagrams start to make sense, some people to amazing complex compositions with it.

    • @Nrde
      @Nrde 7 месяцев назад +3

      This relates to what people are used to use. I've never used premiere so much that I could say I was any good or productive, but starting Resolve and Fusion from scratch wasn't difficult at all (for me). Also the "plugin" ecosystem starts to be really good for Resolve also, at least for typical motion graphics, titles, zooms etc. that beginners would struggle to build from scratch in Fusion. So you don't necessarily need fusion at all if you install plugins or use built in effects (that you can also dive into and modify as they are also built in fusion).
      In any case for a normal person whose livelihood doesn't rely on editing videos and hasn't learnt Premiere inside out, I would say Resolve is the better option in any case. It's free, it's not unusable or even difficult to learn by any means and it has more features - even the free version that it's enough for even more advanced use cases.
      Resolve isn't perfect (far from it if you read Davinci's user forum) but it's maybe more reliable to use than Premiere.

    • @Siimkristjanpariis
      @Siimkristjanpariis 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@Nrde Yea I know, I prefer Resolve any day, have been using it since 2020 and I'm not switching back.
      Its just that I was quite comfortable in After Effects by then and Fusion felt like I have to start from scratch because almost everything was different.

    • @rano12321
      @rano12321 7 месяцев назад +2

      After effects works by emulating how film compositing works but Fusion works like emulating how a computer process images which makes things a lot more powerful and flexible when you are doing thins like 3D camera tracking or other things that quite didn't exist when people were doing physical film compositing. Fusion is logical and you'd have to chain up nodes in a logical manner to create your desire effect, this logical flow chart might be initially less intuitive than adobe's layer base approach but it's a billion times more powerful, flexible and faster when you are dealing with complex project hence pretty much 99% of all professional programs use nodes and not layers. There aren't many layers outside of the whole adobe thing either.

    5 biggest reasons why people still use Premiere Pro:
    1. They still have a ton of projects from customers that they might need to change later. Without Adobe subscription you can no longer use your own work.
    2. All their collogues use Premier Pro so if they need to collaborate with a colleague then they still need Premiere Pro.
    3. Customers don't just want the final product, but they want the project files as well.
    4. You are familiar with Premiere Pro and relearning everything from scratch will take you months or even years. Who is going to pay for that?
    5. As an experienced editor you might even be a trainer, and all your students want to learn the tools that are market leading.
    So, for a lot of editors, it does not matter if Davinci Resolve is better or not. They are simply stuck to Adobe, and Adobe knows that all too well. If you still use Adobe, you gave that company a license to all your work that was edited by their tools for ever, and that is a mighty long time.

    as a DIT and colorist, I cringe when I hear the editor is gonna cut the project in premiere. The XML files I get from premier rarely line up with the timeline in resolve and you always have to have a full cut reference movie to check against the xml with source footage. Giant waste of time. Almost every editor I have worked with uses avid, but if you could force them to switch the only professional thing to switch to is resolve.

    I think I will make the switch soon - reason 5 is so spot on. One question I have about Resolve that is very niche is about audio time units and video frames. In Premiere it does both but if you move audio as a block that contains tracks positioned differently in terms of time units, linked with a video clip, it throws away all the time unit positions and resolves them to the nearest frame. It is a serious flaw. I wonder if Resolve maintains the frame / time unit positions when moving linked audio and video material?

I have been using the same customized workspace for many years so like DaVinci users, I always know where things are and I have never been asked to help another PP user. Giving users flexibility is a plus, not a weakness.

    It’s funny that “video editors” online and on YT assume people still use dynamic link… I’ve been using Adobe products for almost 5 years and I can tell you that dynamic link never worked and it still doesn’t. Skip after effects and just keep it in premiere. 80% of the stuff you can do in AE you can do or recreate with PR and other Adobe apps.

    Today Resolve and Premiere are very good editing software.
    In premiere to have good color grading power you need red giant magic bullet plugin (ocio opencolorio).
    I prefer the well know customized adobe interface (photoshop, premiere, after effects, illustrator....) above all for multi-screens workspace.
    But resolve concept is newer and have best color grading without plugin with the best price.
    It is very good for customers that Resolve is pushing the compétition because adobe have to follow this new hype.
    Look how many youtube video are on why i switch from premiere to resolve.

    7:42 That's a good take but 30fp is still too consistent. I would say that is like a video game that is reaching 60fp 30% of the time, the rest of the time is struggling to get 52fp, with those fps drops that are so annoying and made you... yeah, I guess you got it.

    I have watched a lot of videos on this subject. More or less, each of them is correct as this one as well! The only thing I could argue is the smoother interface. I don't see DaVinci no near close to Premiere. Sorry, but it is true. Probably with all these new fancy-pancy laptops/desktops you don't see the differente but with my 8 years old system it is quite obvious. I tried everything: decoded the input files, use proxy, lower playback resolution, etc. DaVinci is still struggling to get me smoother playback. On top of that it tries to fry my both CPU and GPU during export, while Premiere works quite smooth with decoded files even without proxies, full or half resolution during playback and temperature of both CPU and GPU does not get higher than 65 degrees celsius. Also, DaVinci interface does not give the option to make its background more lighter - this white text on black is very hard on the eyes for some people.

    DaVinci just wins in my opinion. Even on my MBP M1 Max, Premiere starts to stutter. I actually sold my 4-Core iMac back then cause I thought a new Model would fix the problem. But it didn't. Hell no! Premiere is still working just crap and DaVinci ..?? Buttery smooth, whatever you would smack on. The timeline works. Always! Go to hell Premiere with your tiny keyframe handles. Only thing that I miss, is a vertical monitoring window for social Media edits and a bigger view on the whole timeline, like a scale control. That would be sick!

      @@filmmakerevolutionwell you could use the shortcut key to add a clip from bin which would save you a tiny bit of time to skip drag&drop but you have to select the adjustment clip first. You could have different lengths of clips readymade though if you need clips that cover certain amount of time start to end
      Anyway it's just a suggestion to help with your problem.

    honestly, I love premier for the edit only but colour ending it's the worst! And the customizing of panels is a no go especially that if you are on the edit window and you suddenly go to the audio window it changes you custom windows which totally sucks! With DR we can say they have perfected that software and ease of use. The fusion page still scare but one day I'll get to understand it. Also it have the best transitions and even extra free transitions that are far more renderable than in PR! to me DR is the King of colors grading and with effect capture to power bins, it's just beautiful 🙂👌

    I haven't used Resolve at all, but my understanding is (or at least *was*) that After Effects is still more powerful than Fusion - is that not the case? In my own workflow, I'm constantly using After Effects for motion graphics and character rigging... plus relying on plugins like Element 3D, Lockdown and a bunch of others from Maxon/Red Giant. Can Resolve/Fusion cover all of that? Because I'd freaking LOVE to dump Adobe.

    • @Nrde
      @Nrde 7 месяцев назад

      I don't know half of the programs or plugins you mentioned, but Fusion is very capable. But I think you would at least need some plugins to achieve the same without building everything from the ground up. You can get a feeling of its capabilities by searching "fusion tutorial" on YT.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne 7 месяцев назад

      I don't kniw about character rigging. I know DR has added some features regarding 3D import recently.
      For motion graphics, AE is still better, but you can do most of the same, in Fusion.
      Tracking is said to be betrer in DR.
      As for being a complete compositors, Fusion is superior. Fusion used to be used on many blockbuster movies, before Nuke took the lead. The first Avatar movie was done mostly with Fusion (standalone).
      Fusion and Nuke are true 3D conpositors, while AE is a 2.5D compositor.
      Just remember this: No company only use one or the other. They use whats best for the case. Hardly any movie don't use Avid (editing), AE (motion graphics), Nuke (compositing) and DaVinci Resolve (color grading), Photoshop (imagibg/graphics) ss well as other software, like in-house developed software.

    One thing you should add to your list (applies only to Studio version). Resolve is superior with utilizing all of your hardware. If you do a lot of effects using Fusion and have built a monster workstation with multiple GPUs Resolve will see all of your hardware and effectively use it to speed up processing times.

      Resolve has custom key bindings (premiere and FCP built in I think), but for macros you probably need an external software.
