In our 2012 interview with The Fixx lead singer/lyricist Cy Curnin, he explained the meaning of this song, which deals with malleable politicians. "If you're going to be a liar, you'd better be a damn good liar and remember what you said, or the whole thing's going to get pear shaped," said Curnin. "That was 30 years ago, and look where the system is now. A lot of people stand on ballot boxes and say a lot of things and lie in order to get elected and do nothing. So those songs I'm pretty proud of."

Red Skies Tonight is probably my fav from these guys. Kinda like grunge, its more the 'production style" than the actual style of music when it comes to New Wave. Most bands were vastly different from each other, but Id say the 1 thing they did have in common was the use of synthesizers or electronic drums which were just becoming more user friendly in the 80s.

I agree to an extent. We associate synthesizers with New Wave but they were common in all forms of popular music going back to the early 70’s. With New Wave, the synthesizers were the most prominent instrument not mainly filling the background like a string section. With some bands, they were the only instrument. New Wave songs were much shorter 3-5 minutes than prog or hard rock. Many of the singers had similar styles. Yes, there was more variety in New Wave than some other types of popular music.

There are lyrically political, environmental statements in some of their songs because they are trekkers , they climb, hike all terrain . The lead singer Cy Curnin wrote, performed a song in memory of his dad at a base camp on Mt Everest. His dad taught him trekking as a young boy

A similar one released around the same time is "On The Loose" by SAGA. Your mention of space ship is sort of funny, it was when Space Invaders was big,

I’m not sure when this came out but I do remember it being huge at the frat parties my first year in college. Hearing it instantly snaps me back to 1983-84.

Love The Fixx growing up. 🎸 🕺 They had very lots of good songs during the '80s and early '90s. They have a funky, R&B, ska/reggae feel to lot of their songs such as this one. New wave, post-punk draws from punk influences, but also added synthesizers and good bass guitars to punk rock, drums, which makes it rhythmic. Danceable. Bands like Talking Heads, Gang of Four, Devo, Romeo Void, The Pretenders, Blondie, Inxs, U2, Oingo Boingo, The Police, Adam and The Ants, Duran Duran, Modern English, Joy Division/New Order, Siouxee and the Banshees, Falco, and more, yall should check them out. Which influenced today bands like The Killers, Arcade Fire, Interpol, Metric, Bloc Party, Santigold, No Doubt/Gwen Stefani and others you should check out, too. Look more into the Fixx. I think you only done 2 songs so far. This one and "Saved By Zero". Also lot of songs back then were about The Cold War, politics. New wave and punk songs has a lot sarcastic and melancholy songs about politics and other topics.

Saw those boys in 81 in a club in houston great show as far as the meaning of the song yall thinking to specific he's speaking more generally give a listen to again with that in mind kind of think about what he was saying you tell this and that that's how this leads to that and ....one thing leads to another you have to think in 81 things were starting to tighten up but most of us were still free loving late 70s it at that point I apologize off the bat for the dissertation...lol..
