The Freddie touch of slightly changing the words from the original Smile version to.."makes HIS eyes light up when I would see him there," instead of "makes MY eyes light up when I would see him there." Lol. By Queen ll Freddie found his voice but these early recordings are treasures and a joy to listen to.
It is well documented that Queen did play Smile songs during their first few years. After all, they were just a continuation of the same band, and they didn't have many original songs as Queen to fill up their setlists. They also played The Beatles and other rock and roll covers.
@@Alfonso162008 Umm, so why do we still not really have a setlist? And... The Beatles? Like what, Twist And Shout, Goodbye Old Brooklyn, Misery? And yeah, they totally played Smile songs- but maybe someday... SOMEDAY somebody will share us a setlist at least...
@@oliverafton1444 Idk, probably because no setlist from around that time has surfaced? The earliest surviving setlist that we know of (assuming that the person who sold that piece of paper is telling the truth) is from a March 1972 show, and they were all Queen songs, and covers they continued to play. We know that the band played Smile and Beatles songs previously because at least one of their first bassists (whose name I don't remember) have told about it in interviews in more recent years, but we don't know which songs they might have played (there are speculations among fans of them playing Rain, because Freddie played it with Wreckage, one of his previous bands, but other than that there are no other clues so far). Sorry if it's a very long comment, I like talking in detail 😅
I can imagine a young Freddie, fresh off the boat from India, trying to fit into west London society. Walking into pubs where hes the only person of colour. Everyone doubting him only to become the most well-known rockstar ever
I remember that there was an upload of this song a while back that before the actual song playing there was an argument the band was having with each other that I thought was funny lol. I haven’t found a reupload of that argument ever since
This version doesn't have the vocal harmonies of the chorus, for me the best part of the Smile version. And the bassline of the former is better. And I don't like too much the falsetto of Freddie in this one. It hurts to say, but Tim manages to do a better work in the vocals in this one.
It one of the 6 tracks originally recorded by Roger & Brian's previous band 'Smile' (with Tim Staffell on bass & vocals). As much as I hate to say it, I actually prefer Brians 'Smile' vocals though.

Just to hear his voice makes my day. I need a "Freddie fix" every day. I guess you could call me,a Freddie addict.
Freddie was still looking for his voice here... and i like to think that in 1970's shows, he singed Smile's song

Beautiful jacket and good song !!
