You're supposed to get marks on your forearm. Put something on your sleeve if it hurts. Use a wrist band or something. Size doesn't matter. I'm only 5 ft 6 inches, and I prefer larger Ouds.

I have 3 Ouds. Only one is with me at the moment. My favourite oud is Hamza El Din's and Khalid Belhaiba's Ouds. I have been playing Iranian music since I was ten years old on the Santour, but later I heard Hamza el Din's Oud playing and the sound and it put a spell on me. I also wanted to play an instrument which was more flexible in changing the scale, modulating, and easier to tune than Santour. I am working on teaching Oud, and making music my full-time job.
Wow thanks for turning me on to Hamza El Din. I’m in love with his music, smitten, spellbound. It’s an Arabic Oud he plays I think. You are talking Ouds in the video and you mention his - it looks like an older instrument than the beautiful pice you are holding here. From your unboxing video I am guessing this is the Wenge Yildirim? So if so it’s a Turkish Oud and you are playing Egyptian / Arabic music on it as well. Does this require a different set of strings that come with the Yildirim?
It's difficult to say... I don't think everyone would agree with me so it's hard to call them standards. I'd say that some songs sung by Umm kulthum have become standards in that people from the Arab world all know them. For example Inta Omri, hob eh. Then more wide region ones would be Bint Al shalabiyyah, fog el nakhal, qadduka Al mayyas. But this is only general Arabic music. There's more if you go west to Morocco and north Africa, and different if you go to Turkey. For Iran, you must hear morghe Sahar, and Bebar Ey Baroon by Shajarian. Mosem e Gol a folk song. Alla Ya Ayohal Saghi by shahram nazeri.
Using a guitar pick or playing finger style is possible, but you lose 60% of the magic. The sound of the oud people usually fall in love with is only obtained with a risha.
@@OudforGuitarists Thank You for the answer, I just bought an Oud recently, and it's not arrived yet, but I'm not buying Risha yet, I guess I should get one soon.
@@fihrilkamal7296 You can make your own risha too using thin plastic from various junk. You can also sand down thick cable ties. Those make excellent plastic risha. Just buy some rishas, you won't regret it. Your Oud might also come with a risha or two depending on who you bought it from.

It's held with all fingers and sticks out between your index and thumb. Your fingers should make a fist around the length of the risha.
