  • Christy Wilhelmi of Gardenerd demonstrates how to put together a new GreenStalk vertical gardening planting system. She tests the technology behind the irrigation design and puts it to the test. Will she give it a green thumbs up? Watch to find out. You can learn more about this vertical garden at GreenStalk: greenstalkgarden.com?rstr=GSGARDENERD

    *Special note about the soil - I had to edit out the part where I said that the stuff in the bag is not what the bag says it is. It's a bulk vegetable garden soil that I had left over from an installation project. Happy gardening!

    Christy,
    Ashley here from GreenStalk! What a well done video! Growing vertically is a radical idea and doing it effectively has been pretty difficult until we came along. Thank you for pointing out the soil needing to go to the top.
    Also, you found a new way to use our black plug. Handy! We originally designed it with The Mover so you can plug the water from draining out the side (more helpful if growing indoors).
    I love the variety of plants you chose to grow and especially the loofah! How fun!
    We are so glad you love it!

    OK! I’m convinced! I can’t do it right now, but I will probably order one soon! If I were younger, I’d get about three, but at nearly 80, I think one will be enough for Hubs and I unless it will produce enough food to dehydrate or can, then I’d get a second one. I will continue to grow sweet potatoes in my Rubbermaid tubs, though. They need much more space. Thank you for the unboxing and planting; it answered so much more than their website does. This is super helpful. 👍👍 Two green thumbs up!

    I was reading the comments and someone said there is an automatic mover for an extra $40.00 dollars. That to me is a must have. I've been studying these grow tower designs to see which one I should invest in. I like this system but I also like the worm casting system too. hmmm how to join both together I think is going to be the ultimate system. Whoever creates this new system will definitely get a lot of business. Happy growing your own everyone.

    I just assembled my 4 tier GardenStalk. I believe the black cap is to be used to close off the drain hose on the bottom to prevent drain-off. I did this the first time I filled the water tub to ensure all the soil got thoroughly moistened.

    • @Gardenerd

    For the naysayers who say it is too costly, it all depends on your situation. I too have a channel and grew veggies in raised garden beds. I missed the 2020 Spring startup for planting due to a major health set back. This will be the only way I will be able to keep active in gardening. i purchased 2 of these growing planters. The concept is good but it has a few drawbacks. it uses too much soil for whats growing in it. too much unused soil. secondly the drip watering hole sits at the back of the plant that its supposed to be watering. water only drips at the back but the roots of the plants are are at the front. if you supplement it with additional watering then it would work.

    • @ChristyWilhelmi
      @ChristyWilhelmi 5 лет назад +4

      Thanks for sharing your experience. We like that is has a deep soil base because roots are much happier (and dry out less quickly) when the container is larger. As for irrigation, we try to plant our crops on an angle so the roots are inward toward the center, and the foliage is leaning out toward the edge. That might help roots get the water they need as well.

    • @janinasimons8533
      @janinasimons8533 4 года назад

      +angla anderson, i prefer the garden tower 2 as it has the irrigation etc in centre and will have to listen to see if anyting was planted that needs deep roots like carrots, this one doesnt look like it has enough garden space, no worms and too bulky to be safe and watering would be a pain. but I dont own it.. We've kept the luffa plant alive since this video was made and have gotten 1 luffa each year from it. Keep in mind that we've neglected the plant but it keeps going. We keep draping vines over the top and it keeps flowering and producing. Most of the fruits fall off because timing hasn't been right for pollination, but inevitably we still get a ripened fruit each year. This year's was larger than last years, and we expect each year will get better and better.

    • @Gardenerd

      The upper layers are more challenging to fill from a heavy bag of soil. Much easier to fill on the ground and then put in place. But if lifting a bag of soil is easier for you, go for it.

    My issue with vertical planters are the space for the plants. Even with filling each layer to the rim with soil the opening of each "leaf" is pretty small so it can't really expand much (like lettuce for example). So the space you save in square footage you lose in food production. Also the spaace in the middle of each layer is totally wasted. I do like the watering system but for this system, the rolling wheels cost another $50+.
    I think this is a really good system for people living in apartment building or have small backyard space. But for people that have the room for a raised bed this is really inefficient and expensive.

    • @Gardenerd
      @Gardenerd  3 года назад +5

      I agree with you about most vertical gardening systems. But the reason why I like this system is BECAUSE it has a deep root zone and there is plenty of space for plant roots. The "leaf" as you call it, is not separated from the center of the system by a barrier, so the roots can travel toward the center of each planter. where the water comes down from the top. It encourages deeper root growth because of that.

    • @Gardenerd
      @Gardenerd  3 года назад

      You could do that if you like. Bags of soil can be heavy, and therefore harder to maneuver the higher up you go. But if you have good upper body strength, then go for it.

    I WOULD'NT ROTATE IT. I WOULD FIND AWAY TO REFLECT SUN LIGHT TO THE PLANTS. LIKE TAKE SOME MIRROR DOOR FILM ON BOARD TO MAKE A REFLECTION ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE PLANTER. MAYBE A DOME MIRROR WOULD DO EVEN BETTER. BEATS THE HELL OUT OF SUN CHASING.

      You can put 30 plants in it and water them all at the same time. It saves space like for a balcony. You can grow indoors. What part of innovation is too expensive when this can be used for all types of gardenders? It will also keep squirrels and probably other unwanted pests if you put marigolds at the bottom.

    If I may suggest something, I understand that you are the person that you are and I don't want to criticize your personality, but I think you should not speak about stuff with a question mark at the end like if you were questioning someone's sanity. I have noticed that you speak in that voice very often. Like when you said "and these collard greens have been *a little chewed on*." or "which is important when you transplant things." or "this is like live television" or "try not to squish any of your veggies, like I did." I hope you understand what I mean, I am sorry if I hurt you, but I believe that your channel is great and it has a lot of potential to grow even bigger. I am sure you have a lot of fans who love that quirkiness about you, but I think you have nothing to be insecure about. You can speak confidently about even the mistakes you made like forgetting the water trays. I probably would have forgotten them, too. Mistakes happen to everyone, you have no need to laugh awkwardly about it. So be a proud gardener. Because your garden is amazing.
    BTW I really liked that you added the 7 week later review at the end because most gardener youtubers don't do that and I think it is a little lazy of them. We never know whether it succeeded or not.

    • @Gardenerd
      @Gardenerd  6 лет назад +21

      Thanks for your feedback, Viv. But these are the jokes folks, not insecurity. Humanness is an important part of the presentation, because everyone makes mistakes. We want to make sure everyone sees those. After 25 years of gardening, we still make them. All the time. We laugh and hopefully others laugh with us. Happy gardening!
