Such a useful video. Had so many questions about Thai fruit based on my many trips to the country. Some fruits I know but many I had seen and wondered about, particularly the rose apple. Now I know! Well done Darren!
Darren I have seen some of these fruits in one of my local grocery store here in Canada. Next time I see them I will try them since now I know what they are and how to eat them! Thanks for the great fruit series!
This was a great video all the fruits looked delicious. We get some of these fruits at the Asian market here in New York. But nothing like you have there, and of course here they are much more expensive.
I have made a few in the past and there will be more coming in the future. Here's a play list of videos I've made featuring Thai fruits so far: ruclips.net/p/PLNLfDOIkGB10LjnAqRBJdNdHrk2F-9uk8
Darren I believe you are correct regarding jackfruit as for dragon fruit the seed are high in fatty acid lipids but low in vitamins some of the other fruits you tasted look very interesting
I know all the fruits in the Thailand market and I love them Thank you for your amazing video ,We will be in Ko Samui Phuket and Bangkok soon .It is not the first time .Thank you
Yes, I used to buy them at Woolies sometimes too, not at the same price as they are here though ;) My local Asian grocery stores used to often stock them as well.
you are doing e great job mate .. as an asian a have tested pretty much everythings in this video, i can tell you your comments are spot on :) keep it up .cheers
Mangostin, Loncon are my favourits. Rose apple doesnt really have much taste to it. Plumb mango I havent eaten. That deep is salty sweet and spicy and you eat it with a bitter fruit.
Hi Darren hope the family is well. All that looks so good and so cheap compared to aus. Such a great market that is. Thanks for sharing mate. Greetings from Sydney.
Mangosteen, pineapple and rose apples are all my favourites. And you really can't get better than freshly squeezed Thai orange juice. I can almost taste it now lol Great video Darren 👍👍👍
Looking good. It's a lot easier to be brave when it comes to fruit. I've never had the Rose Apple or LaMut (sp?). Will definitely try those along with a few others you recommended in earlier videos. Mangosteens are my favorite too. Glad to see some already available.
Yes, mangosteens are around and getting cheaper by the day it seems. 10 days ago I paid 150 baht/kg, 5 days ago 120 baht/kg and I saw them yesterday for 100 baht/kg. It's a good time of year for fruit-lovers!
After seeing this I looked up cashews. Yes, that's the cashew with which I am familiar. I've eaten cashews my whole life. I had no idea they grow like that. There is only ONE cashew in that fruit! No wonder they are more expensive than most other nuts. I'd buy that just to open it up and look at it.
Yes, I had never realised cashews grew like that until I moved to Thailand. I'm going to have to find out how Thais use the cashew apple, because I'm pretty eager to try them Thai-style.
Looks great! Unfortunately I have to stay away from some fruits due to allergies, but I tend to go for some Durian or Pineapple whenever I hit the local market!
Thanks for sharing Darren..Love to eat fruit specially mangosteen, rose apple and rambutan. Can't wait for my Thai trip next month. Will definetely visit those fruit markets. Btw how Thai people cook those cashew fruit? Did not know if that was edible.
Thanks JP! Yes, I love all of those too, they are delicious! Unfortunately I don't know how people here prepare the cashew apple. I've read that it is edible, but apparently tastes horrible. It is used to produce a fruit juice in some countries, and can also be fermented into an alcoholic beverage. In some countries the apple is apparently prized above the cashew nut.
Your videos are really interesting! I was wondering if you could do one on eating in thailand on a vegan diet? I noticed theres a lot of meat, and the vegetarian festival video you did was really good to see!
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you're enjoying them. Unfortunately I don't know much about vegetarianism as I am not a vegetarian, but there are loads of RUclips videos about vegetarian food in Thailand. Here's one I mad a few months back: ruclips.net/video/2JijaqmZucI/видео.html
both the US and Aus have these fruits, in the US, its the state of Florida and in Aus, Queensland, Caines. been to both places and the only difference are the prices in Asia and the West
Hi Darren, what is the name (in Thai) for the spicy-mix they give with fruits? (salt/sugar/chili)?? Nice videos...love the background sound of local's live...not too much music. Greetings from Holland
Thanks for the memories 👏 all the fruits you ate are Delicious but I wish the video was longer and you had mangosteens, custard apples and many more. Both fruits are $12 kilo here in Melbourne 😵 great vid as always Darren 🙏👏🙌
I'm slowly getting through all of the fruits here. Here's a play list of videos I've made featuring Thai fruits so far, mangosteens, custard apples and many more featured in Part 2 :) ruclips.net/p/PLNLfDOIkGB10LjnAqRBJdNdHrk2F-9uk8
GREAT VIDEO..Can you eat the seed in side a RAMUTTAN FRUIT. Just bought some from Chinese supermarket at £9.00 a kilo. Import prices not Thailand prices..
Thanks. Google suggests you can eat them if they're cooked, but they're toxic when raw www.google.co.th/search?client=firefox-b-ab&dcr=0&ei=2SlrWoamJ4G6vwS-tbbADA&q=eat+rambutan+seed&oq=eat+rambutan+seed&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i22i10i30k1j0i22i30k1.543687.547436.0.547704.17.17.0.0.0.0.194.1583.0j12.12.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..5.12.1576...0i67k1j0i131i67k1.0.28QJv4O7tz4
You mean the name of the fruit? Darren said "What's the name?" in Thai and the seller replied "Ma-praang". Ma-praang (มะปราง) is Marian Plum or Plum Mango in English.
Darren tried the dragon fruit here and found it absolutely without any taste ! The jackfruit was also disappointing maybe due to the store packaging under rip jackfruit. I guess the best place to eat good fruit is south east Asia and not imports to america Telescope
Dragon fruit often doesn't have much taste, I'm not a huge fan of it, but it is supposed to have lots of health benefits. Jackfruit is delicious though, I guess you might have to come here to try them, to experience what they should really taste like.
Be careful not to pick up a bundle of this fruit called mafai (Thailand version of of instant diarrhea..lol)..my wife was told not to eat on the road because it can make you go in 5 minutes..lol..btw, love all your videos..very informative...keep up the good work..can't wait for the next video!
Some ingredients (not just fruits) are laxative. Say tamarind for example. They stimulate your bowel and were used by many Asian traditional medicines.
I am surprised that they sell cashews whole and raw. I have always understood that fresh cashews are poisonous. Also, is the 'apple' part edible or just the nut?
I didn't know, so I Googled it and what I read suggests that raw cashews contain urushiol, a toxin, as does the outer shell of the nut. The apple is edible, but apparently tastes horrible. It is used to produce a fruit juice in some countries, and can also be fermented into an alcoholic beverage. In some countries the apple is prized above the nut.
Can you imagine 30 yrs ago all that fresh picked food and not speaking Thai? What do you peel? cook? eat raw? Are seeds poisonous? You provide a real service expaining it all. You show it all...in the market. Grilled, steamed, deep fried meat and veggies too. Another thing I've noticed, you will go out of your way to provide special links to ppl. It's clear you have a real passion for Thai food and culture...The Tourism Board should get you on board...That's my recommendation to them ;-)
Yes, it would have been a very different place back then. And yes, I do love Thailand and its culture. It's a fascinating place. Maybe one day they'll get me on board ;)
you are doing e great job mate .. as an asian a have tested pretty much everythings in this video, i can tell you your comments are spot on :) keep it up .cheers

Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful!
This was a great video all the fruits looked delicious. We get some of these fruits at the Asian market here in New York. But nothing like you have there, and of course here they are much more expensive.

My local Asian grocery stores used to often stock them as well.

As always you get a thumbs up from me Darren, The red fruit you ate is that a cashew apple. See ya on your next video :)
Thanks mate. No, the red fruit is a rose apple. It's different to the cashew apples. See you next week!
Hi Darren hope the family is well. All that looks so good and so cheap compared to aus. Such a great market that is. Thanks for sharing mate. Greetings from Sydney.
Thanks mate, yes, we're all well. It is a great market, and yes, the local fruits here are well priced. I hope all is well in Sydney! Cheers.
darrenb3.. All good here mate just crap weather ATM. Take care bud.
another good video Darren. I like Durian the best but most fruits are really tasty
Thanks Owen! I love durian too, but overall mangosteen is my favourite.
Mangosteen, pineapple and rose apples are all my favourites.
And you really can't get better than freshly squeezed Thai orange juice.
I can almost taste it now lol
Great video Darren 👍👍👍
Lol! Thanks John! 👍👍
I will arrive 12 April. I am so excited. I hop the weather is OK and not rainy all the time in Phuket. Love you videos 👍🏻

Sounds like a good subject for a video. :)
Indeed ;)
Just Wow 😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. So much variety and the green mangoes my favorite too 😃 .... Your beautiful Son is growing taller 😃❤👍🏻. Lovely video Darren
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, he is growing fast :)
Looks great! Unfortunately I have to stay away from some fruits due to allergies, but I tend to go for some Durian or Pineapple whenever I hit the local market!
Thanks Emil. Yes, thankfully there are plenty of fruits to choose from at markets like this.

Hi Jewel! Hope you enjoyed Darrenb3's awesome video!
I miss eating those rose apple ☹️ haven't eaten those ever since I left Thailand 4 years ago
Yes, they are very tasty! I hope you can get back to Thailand soon!

Yes, I've seen most of these in Australia, but like you said, the prices were vastly different there.
Hi Darren, what is the name (in Thai) for the spicy-mix they give with fruits? (salt/sugar/chili)?? Nice videos...love the background sound of local's live...not too much music. Greetings from Holland
Thanks Alisan! It's called "prik glua" (chili salt) in Thai. All the best!
look so yummy
Yes, very yummy indeed :)

darrenb3 Thank you for the super fast reply. FRUIT Only kids.....
Yes, it seems that way. Enjoy your rambutans!
Darren is right. We cook and sugar-coated the seed. This is the old way to eat them. Unfortunately very few makes it today.
can you tell me what was said at 4:56 plz? an nee *something* a-rai?

Hi any lambutan?
Really good for my diabetes...

Is this video taken in March?
Yes, in early March.
Thanks for replying back I really appreciate it because my family n I r looking forward to visiting Thailand in between Feb and March
What are the fruits at 5:12 called in English
The English names are given in the video when I ate them, at 9.25, marian plum, or plum mango.
Miss those fruits nothing in here now.c😭😏👍🏻
:(
