When Singaporean or private company broke the law, they face fine or jail time. When PAP government broke the law, they can have it easy by holding a press conference to apologize or defend their position in Parliament. It is as if PAP government is above the law. Was it the intention of many Singaporean voters to vote for people to be above the law or did they make a mistake on polling day?
Think we have more in the American Government, but at least a lot of them were caught and prosecuted. To bad they couldn't have recovered more of the money.
Because all pap MPs are not interested as they prefer spending time on making more money to buy GCB and freehold properties for their own family and children. VTO
I think the public is getting more confuse after JT explanation. As the saying go, you cant convince the public, you confuse them. Let me summarize what JT explained: a) NRIC is an unique identifier. It remains as a person data, organisation collecting NRIC based on needs and handle with care(seek consent on use). It is not a secret, not meant to be disclosed. b) There is an incorrect use of NRIC as authentication, such that they can be used to unlock access to information(finance, health, address, car registration number etc). One should not use NRIC as password or as an authenticator. c) NRIC number is not equivalent to Identity card. As the card is more unique becos it contains name, photos, safety marks to prevent fake.... Glad that there is a consensus that NRIC is unique identifier used by schools, hospital, in-election, in marriage, matriculation, jobs, police station, birth certificate, making passport, death certificate, etc. Hence to say that it should not be labelled as secret is sn understatement. Of course NRIC alone does not mean anything to a tom, dick or harry, but it means alot to scammers, police crime investigation, hospital laboratory records etc. The fact that many important o institution uses its uniqueness to store their database, make it very very important that this information do not fall into hands of scammer, terrorist and someone who do not need to know the information. We trusted the government with this information, all the more we expect the information is safeguarded properly and not to be disclosed to the public. The case of company using NRIC as authenticator(we understand becos is unique), but as password(password security is usually impose by the IT with combination of alphabet, number, special character and changed every few month, so argument of using NRIC as password is irrelevant) Finally back to acra which reveals the full NRIC with name, and other information. This is the worst leak as NRIC is tied to the name and mayb property etc etc. This becomes very very sensitive.... as scammer/terrorist can now without effort confirm the NRIC for the person name and hus address. So the rest is just peanuts I agree that NRIC card is even more unique and a robust way of authentication. However, everything in SG is digitized. With digitisation comes risk of online scam, theft and impersonation of identity
Jo Teo is a master of verbosity. She can talk for hours while essentially saying very little. Her main skill is trying to convince the public that this isn’t her fault and that the fault solely falls on ACRA
After listening carefully to statements by Josephine Teo and Indranee Rajah, my conclusion is the fault lies with MDDI's ambiguous communication which did not clearly explain and specify the intent of the new policy. ACRA sought clarification but for some reason - there was no or a breakdown in communication between MDDI and ACRA. How come? ACRA then proceeded to remove the masking of NRIC nos. in the belief that this was what MDDI's ambiguous communication meant. ACRA must not be held responsible for the fiasco. Josephine Teo, minister overseeing MDDI, must take responsibility.
This incident has serious security and legal implications,” SDP stated. “It is wholly inadequate and unacceptable for Ministers Teo and Indranee to issue an apology and make vague promises to do better in the future.”
I’m so sick of Jo Teo’s political doublespeak. Her apology is a non-apology. She’s “apologised” for causing the public “anxiety”. The public is ANGRY, NOT ANXIOUS. Ms Teo, you should instead be apologising for falsely equating NRICs to Full names. YOUR ministry was quick to respond to the bizfile debacle by dismissing concerns made by the public and claiming that there should not have been a concern. MDDI’s statement can still be found online. I am absolutely baffled that Ms Teo who comes from a HR background has been chosen to lead the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore. I was unable to locate anything in her job experience that would merit a position that should require at least some degree of technical expertise. If there was no lapse in judgement, then maybe there should be an external audit on CSA and MDDI. But we all know that isn’t going to happen. So cut the political doublespeak already. Singaporeans aren’t as stupid as the government thinks us to be. Just admit that NRICs should in fact be treated with greater sensitivity than full names and that MDDI made a mistake. Then you can start phasing NRICs out of existing identification and authentication processes. No need to keep on talking.
Today I shopped at Harvey Norman . I purchased 1 x DC fan . However at payment counter , the casher request my NRIC number for verification otherwise she will not proceed . I asked the cashier that JO mentioned clearly NRIC should not freely disclosed unless Lawman, Banks, Employers , Hospitals . Pls advise does Harvey Norman or Best Denki has the right to request our NRIC ?>
Past cases have seen organisations penalised for mishandling such data, yet the unmasking of NRIC numbers in this instance has been attributed only to poor inter-agency communication.
The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has called for the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) to release the circular that allegedly led to the recent unmasking of full NRIC numbers on ACRA’s Bizfile portal.
Josephine Teo, I hear it from you here, "Seek consent on use" - I did not & have not consented on deduction from my Medisave account. My savings were stolen from my account & I am now left with '0' sum. I am sure our NRIC had to be involved in larceny like this one. CPF Board couldn't help me in the investigation & I live overseas. I am sure your unique position can help.
Shows a distinct lack of understanding for cyber security. Few people and companies are using nric as PASSWORD. What is appalling is that MOST, including Singpass, were happy to use it as default USER ID (identifier). Now you've given hackers half the key to brute force our passwords. Thanks Jo, trust that clarifies! No need to talk so much, I don't hear a single better solution.
JT ludicrous explanation did not cover the mistake and in efficientcy of the Authority. Explaination not required which only evades inefficientcy. She must rectify and amend the mistakes and ensure the public that it never happens again.
I believe the IMDA fails to recognize that an NRIC is directly connected to personal information. If there’s a platform that allows me to search by NRIC number, I can find a person’s name and then, through social media, potentially uncover where they work, where they live, or even their contact number-especially if they haven’t taken steps to protect their privacy.
So to me masking or not masking NRIC is not the main point, is using the NRIC to find someone full name, I can use that full name to search for someone profile using the current social network
Long speech, but it doesnt seem to answer the concerns? Explanation of nric sensitivity, sure. Explanation of govt taking the forefront, sure. But shouldn't you have communicated it first, debated it and THEN released it? You yourself have cited that organisations that use NRIC is used beyond an identifier - by not circulating the information and giving time - are you intending to throw private sector / public sector under the bus? Should the acra launch REALLY be the platform to release this? what are the steps to remediate? Finally, the acra service seems misaligned as per your explanation - not all of us personal individuals want to be identified per se by everyone not relevant. Since its corporate, use UEN? Also, collection of NRIC numbers by organisations - sure. Broadcasting them seems to be another layer to be considered though...?
JT ludicrous explanation did not cover the mistake and in efficientcy of the Authority. Explaination not required which only evades inefficientcy. She must rectify and amend the mistakes and ensure the public that it never happens again.
Does this mean eventually IC no. will no longer be a default identifier or authentication of true identity, and extra security like 2FA will be the future norm?😂
JT and IR, kindly step down immediately. So not let your PAPies, who already in bad shape, down. If both of you don't, it will definitely effect the coming GE results 😂😂😂
Fluff, I don’t think there’s a need for that. You can ACTUALLY solve it from technology. Either the government is slow or you need to listen to Lee Hong Yi. I’ve seen his technology stack and YOU SHOULD LISTEN. Please minister, wake up, there’s a better solution. LISTEN.
S'poreans are blessed with a first-world PAP govt which has never been pofmaed because it doesn't deceive or mislead s'poreans with lies, unlike the other parties.❤❤
