- Annapolis Valley is located on the East side of the Bay Of Fundy in Nova Scotia. It is an important agriculture area, growing fruits and producing high quality Wine, Beer and Spirits. In the first half of our visit here, we stayed near Wolfville in the North side of the valley and in the second half in Annapolis Royal in the south side.
In Wolfville, we discovered a vibrant town (it is a university town) with a lot of farms, good restaurants, fine wines and wineries. One memorable winery is Luckett which serves excellent wines in a scenic location.
On our second day here, we hiked the Cape Split trail and experienced the Bay Of Fundy from the East side.
In the following day, we visited the Grand Pre' National Historic site (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and learned about the history and culture of the Acadians. The Acadians were French colonists who settled in “Acadie” in the early 1600s . They were talented farmers who were able to transform marshlands to agriculture lands very effectively. In 1755 the British expelled the Acadians, who refused to pledge allegiance to the British Crown, from their homeland.
Next we headed south to Annapolis Royal. We experienced the local town's open market (twice), got a haircut in a traditional barber shop and enjoyed the interaction with the locals in this beautiful historic town. We visited Port Royal - a historic French settlement from the 17th century as well as Fort Anne - which was used by the British to protect Annapolis Royal's harbor.
From Annapolis Royal, we did a day trip to Kejimkujik National Park, which is outside of the valley. In the park, we hiked to a waterfalls, enjoyed early fall colors and experienced canoeing the first time.
