Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening, and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! Fewer levels - yes. Sandstone - yes. Pump - yes. More open plan - excellent. I love it when a plan changes for the better. Keep up your courage Sean. This cottage is going to be amazing.

You have plenty of stones on your property. I was stationed near Evreux 64-66. A Frenchman said to me, "See that field over there, all those stones..... well we have been farming the fields around here for 2,000 years..... and we have a bumper crop of stones every year!"

And I live in Nebraska, where early settlers had neither trees nor stones to build their homes. They lived in houses built of sod until they could afford lumber brought in by train. They also planted tress…lots of trees!

I think bringing the kitchen area level with the living room is the way to go. Multiple levels and walls in such a small space only serve to make it feel cramped and disjointed.

I am so, so happy you've reduced the area to two levels. Practically, it increases the usable space of the kitchen by more than the space you added as people can step into the living area space. It will also make it easier to maneuver the steps, especially when carrying things like laundry up and down. I love the wood faming as it echoes the fireplace and it is always nice to keep the unmovables in a design working together as much as possible.

The new configuration makes much more sense to me then the multiple levels in such a relatively small area. Can’t wait to see how it all progresses. You remind me of my Dad who was an old fashioned builder who could always change his designs to fit new situations. Really well done Sean.

Sean, I am so happy you made these changes. The open floor plan is going to be so much better. I really think you could find an antique piece of furniture/table to use as a center island and place to sit and have coffee, food, tea. Now that you’ll have one level it will be lovely.

    • @belight123

yea, for some reason there's so much height to the floor, I was worried the height would stick around, but am glad Sean put some thought in it and was able to notice that too. The different levels in any home end up driving people absolutely insane because, well, yea, nothing's on the same level and it's just really awkward.
I'm happy to see he's pulling back the layers of the kitchen, that will really make it look better and will add height to the ceiling. In terms of water, a French Drain system could easily take care of any standing water issues.

I like this plan much better than the previous one, and I'm glad you're addressing the void in the floor at the same time. I think a little counter (maybe L-shaped?) at the bottom of the stairs is a better use of the space than a wall. You'll never regret having more counter space to work on, but walls often just end up being in the way.
You can still make use of the beautiful old windows you found. Maybe you can make a slim box to mount them on and put lights inside the box so that they look like illuminated windows when they're mounted on the wall? If you used LED bulbs that can change from daylight to warm white, you could imitate daylight coming through them during the day and use the warmer light at night to make it feel cosy.

I think you're likely right. I'd take it all the way back to the same level he's dug out up until now.
I'm sure there's a whole 'nother level of a house down there just waiting to unburied, pressure-washed and brought back to life.
Hopefully Sean will investigate all the way to that point, will be interesting to see and you can't beat the extra ceiling height that'll come with digging down the floors if nothing's there. Win win all around, really.

As for the height of the kitchen and the idea of the pump (aka "water lifting system"), I know people who have the immediate area of their kitchen cabinets, i.e. the worktop, sink, oven etc. a step higher than the rest of the kitchen floor, with a step area of about 1m width in front of it. I.e. that step and the actual working area are higher than the rest of the kitchen floor. Sorry if I'm not describing it very well, but I think you get what I mean. It works fine for them and you get used to it very quickly. They had the raised standing area built of wood.

I had thought that in the last video to level all the floors :) it's a bit of work but at least you will know everything is cleared and no issues. I would still put in the half wall as it will give extra space for storage and possibly even counter space. You could also incorporate a rail from the wall for the stairs at least on one side going up to the loft. I like the slate tiles as you will need more tiles for the rest of the flooring it would be less to tile at least in one area.

Sean, much better plan! Looks better already. It’s too bad. You can’t use the stable next to it to make a larger cottage adore under the stairs through to the other side would’ve been cool though maybe not structurally possible. It would be much more usable home space. I’m actually glad you changed it because I was starting to wonder about the design lol!

It’s a lot of physical work, but the new plan so far will open it up more. 👍

Sean, you are a one man mean machine!! One stone at a time…!! Good new idea about leveling the kitchen with the living room. Be very careful of your back….it doesn’t take a lot when you’ve already injured it. Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🌷🐻
