The Cold Steel OSS: Wasn't Thrilled, so I Modded It.

  • I got this knife about a decade ago and never really "connected" with it in terms of feel and a few aspects of the design. So here's my impressions as it is in still mostly out-of-box condition, and then I do a bit of tinkering.
    One thing that's visible in the thumbnail image but I didn't mention in the video (because I did it later after I'd handled it awhile) is I did a little reshaping to the Kraton grip, which can be done with a Dremel sanding drum (I've customized a lot of Hogue grips this way). The trick is to chill the rubber before you work on it.

    I use it hunt pigs here in Hawaii. I wanted a long blade with the finger groove guard. It's messy sticking pigs and your hand can slip down the blade very easily. Never had a problem on this knife. The blade is plenty of sharp outta the box and has only needed honing to keep it sharp enough for me. This knife has held up very well since 2010.

      Good to know. Blade was good for me as well, but have yet to do more than practice with mine. Your experience says a lot as adult pigs have a fair bit of hide to penetrate. Thanks for sharing. Mahalo.

      @@ThirdoptionJCSU Long experience and personal nostalgia will always make me favor an original Gerber Mark II, preferably with a wasp-waist blade, but it doesn't really hold up build-wise to newer designs on the market. The Boker Applegate is a great choice, and I've heard good things about the Ka-bar EK, CS Tai Pan and SOG Pentagon, but don't rule out the classic Fairbairn Sykes. Depends on how it feels in your hands, how much blade length you want, etc. I've also reviewed some very slim Spanish and German single-edged "Bowies" that are very stiletto-like, some specifically designed to be actual pig-stickers.

Ka-bar would probably have some more cutting ability unlike Fairbairn Sykes which is been made primarily for stabbing only If I'm not mistaken. I bought the OSI a few months ago. This blade is now scary sharp and my superstitious brother thinks it has bad intentions of its own 😅
    It's a sturdy piece of AUS8 and seems to be an amazing weapon.

    I was also looking into the OSS because I no longer have a true double edge knife in ly collection.

    I really like these sub-hilt fighters and have owed a few of them including this cold steel oss. I got to handle an actual vintage Bob Loveless original at a knife show long ago and it's since been a dream of mine to add one of his to my collection (maybe when I win the lottery, lol). The kraton sub-hilt, while less pleasant aesthetically, is a general functional improvement imo. Finding a sub-hilt that is always comfortable and doesn't bite at all can be a challenge and a really good commissioned custom sub-hilt knife should be custom tailored to it's user's grip. This kraton is the next best, and Far more affordable, thing.
    Speaking of grips, I think handshake is how they are intended to be used. I really like to be able to fluidly transition to a reverse grip in my practice though and what I've found works well with these is to eliminate the sub-hilt altogether in a reverse by placing the bottom of the hand against the back/bottom of the sub-hilt. On most models my thumb then wraps comfortably over the end of the pommel and gives a sure and very controlled purchase.
    Thanks for highlighting the classic "sub-hilt fighter" design! It's one of my favorites and I'm always amazed when people who collect, use, and otherwise know knives have never heard of them. Great modifications, especially to the very questionable typical cold steel "secure-ex" or whatever they call their ridiculously over tight scabbards. I always put my own edge on any production blade but I seldom change the edge geometry much less the blade profile. Very bold of you, but I see the improvement and your satisfaction with your work.
    Anyhow, great video my friend! I love all your videos. Please keep em coming :)

    It was south Africa and it was a men saving his father. Coldsteel is definitely capable of what they claim.
    That knife is designed for killing pigs. It's long and slim, for a reason. It's made to get to organs.
    When I was young I was told by the ww2 guys. I was a army ranger so I surrounded myself with old warriors to get stories. I remember one talking about the best knife for wet work. What knife fighting was called by old bad men. Anyway was a large bread knife or fillet knife. The reasoning was blade flex so it would go around ribs. Remember older steel would break. But I believe everything I was taught is still useful people just overlook.
    Anyway I think your knife is a well thought out killing knife. All Coldsteel sheath do that fake lock. I always push till it clicks then pull up. I do it now without thinking on my kubon.
    A knife doesn't have to be a 1/2 inch of steel. Nobody ever has knife duels. Most knives are way overbuilt in my opinion.
    Your knife looks killer. 😆 nice video

      @michaelrizzo5523  2 года назад +1

      What most people think of as a "knife fight" hasn't been a thing for probably well over a hundred years, which is also probably why what's taught commonly as "knife self defense" usually isn't. Since even a sizable knife doesn't parry, anyone with any concept of using it is going to try to get right close on you fast and go for as much lethal penetration as they can get. What knives are best for these conditions sounds like a good video topic. Thanks! Also thanks for reminding me where I saw that video of the OSI in action!

    • @CSGraves
      @CSGraves 10 месяцев назад +1

      I wonder if the trend towards overbuilt knives goes hand in hand with the rise of stainless steels and higher Rockwell hardnesses? You could get away with a lot with a 1/16" thick piece of carbon steel at 54HRC, except maybe keeping an edge long.

  • @shadowrevival
    @shadowrevival Год назад +1

    Great video Michael! I was wondering purely for self defense EDC, not for utility purposes, Which one is better, the OSS or OSI? Currently i'm rocking the cold steel SRK, and I don't think its enough for self defense.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  Год назад +1

      It depends on the techniques you favor. The OSS and Black Bear Classic have very light fine blades suited to thrusts, fast snap cuts and back cuts. The OSS and OSI are a bit lighter than the Black Bear for carry (and around half the price or less). I like the feel and utility of the more blade-present OSI, but it obviously lacks that back edge if that's something you make use of. The OSI would be more like the SRK, but the SRK is shorter and more solid blade-wise for utility use.
      I do plan to revisit the sub-hilt's functionality soon. Some people feel like it's in the way more than it helps, and on the OSS and OSI you could just cut it off. I hope that helped. Thanks!

    And is doable with one hand

    • @michaelrizzo5523

      This one was ridiculously tight until I adjusted it, and unfortunately for me that method is just not very right-hand doable with the ruptured thumb tendon and the arthritic carpals. I can pull it off sometimes with the Outdoorsman because there's a ramp to press against and the retention lugs are not so extreme. Just not built for me, I guess.

    I really like that mod you did to the sheath mouth. Maybe I missed it, but what did you use for that? A Dremel tool? If you want to reduce the retention a hair, just hit the nubs inside the throat with a dremel - very carefully as you don't want to take off too much material.

    • @michaelrizzo5523

      Yup, I've delicately scraped down the retention "nubs" on a few of these sheaths. I used the wheel of a belt sander to remove the plastic from the mouth in an even curve, then cleaned it up.

    What do you think with this type of subhilt fighters? I always considered them a gimmick,and an hindrance to the grip.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  2 года назад

      It seems, for me, they look more awesome than they feel. The sub hilt is supposed to aid retention and create a "trigger" effect in handling, making for a quicker action in snap cuts and fencing-like applications. It's kind of like fingering the crossguard of a rapier. But it's pretty much designed for a handshake or saber grip, which gives a bit more reach (also by putting the hand slightly lower on the grip), but I get more power at close quarters in a hammer or icepick. Also, any kind of stock finger grooves on any grip never fit my hand size, so I suppose I'd need to have one sized and shaped for me. But it just didn't "take" with me enough to invest in a high quality version.

    • @MrMZaccone
      @MrMZaccone 9 месяцев назад

      They're cheap to make, being injection molded, and most people don't know the difference between genuinely sharp and bullshit sharp. Kydex is much better, being made entirely of polymer that is softer than the steel of the knife. The only drawback is that they almost have to be handmade and that costs money. @@michaelrizzo5523

    It was south africa, wounded cape buffalo that charged the client, but the guide took the knock, saved the client, but now buff pinned him down and the son of that guide stabbed the buff 3 times because the client froze and also wouldn't give his rifle to anyone.
