  • Hello, Internet and WELCOME to RetroNick Relics! The show where I scour the Internet, to find all the weird stuff YOU have never played and give my 2-bit opinion on these 8 through 32-bit… relics.
    It dawned on me that I've been sort of playing favorites and picking great games from one of the greatest game consoles ever released, The PC-Engine "or Turbografx-16 as we like to call it here in GOD'S country!"
    So, we're jumping into other 16-bit territory and taking a look at, the Sega Genesis. I like the Genesis, and I became a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan owning one. Still, Sega had an impressive smear campaign that helped bury my beloved TurboGrafx-16, so I've always had a chip on my shoulder when it comes to this platform.
    Having said ALL of that, I wanted to introduce this console with what is widely believed to be the worst title released for it, Osomatsu-Kun: Nonsense Theater, or おそ松くん はちゃめちゃ劇場 in its native Japan.
    It was the fourth game released for Sega's Mega Drive and was the first to be developed exclusively for the platform and is a legendarily bad game. In fact, it's one of the prime examples people cite when you bring up the term, Kusoge.
    The Osomatsu-kun franchise was enjoying a revival thanks to a new anime series, so that hype mixed with the brand-new hardware got everyone hyped, only to be let down by a WAY smaller game with floaty controls, boring environments, and confusing, awful level design. But don't take my word for it! Check out this review from mdshock.com
    "I bought Osomatsu-kun just to see what all the fuss was about, and I can’t even get past the second level. With its confusing level design and awful controls, there’s no doubt that it’s the worst of the worst![2]"
    It's not just time that's been unkind to this gem. The manga's creator famously threw an ashtray at a developer over it!
    Is this the worst game to come out for the Genesis? Did I really only capture 7 minutes' worth of gameplay because I was already fed up and bored with it after only playing it twice? Am I just being hyperbolic? You'll just have to tune in and find out!
    Next time I'll play a good Mega Drive game. Honest!

    A HUGE thank you to the Retro Game Squad podcast, who took the time to review my rough draft and often has me on to talk about more obscure Japanese games that no one around here has ever heard of! You can find them here, at www.retrogamesq..., and you can hear yours truly wax nostalgic on their Turbografx-16 and Sega Saturn episodes, as well as their co-op games and PC-Engine episodes.
    Also, a VERY special thank you to Vito Gesualdi who took the time to offer some helpful critique with my background graphics, which is why we have the nice, subtle diagonal logos slowly gliding by with scanlines instead of a bright, red mess. Check out his channel at / vito , or listen to his podcast “The Biggest Problem in the Universe,” and vote on all the problems at wwww.biggestpro...
    If you like what you’ve seen, please tune in next time to see what relics I dig up next! Also feel free to follow me on twitter, at www.x.com/retron8, where I spew more opinions, share memes, and interact with other Retronauts out there.
    Thank you so much for watching! I’m RetroNick, and you’d be too if you were me!

    Most of the games in South Africa during the 90's were grey market imports, and my first ever Megadrive/Genesis cart was a 4-in-1 that I got pretty much just for X-Men as it was hugely popular at the time. That game wasn't great, but there was a neat fourth-wall breaking trick in one of the levels that required you to "restart the computer" to progress to the next stage - you had to push the actual reset button on the console, but that button was repurposed by whoever assembled the multicart for skipping to the next game... So each time I tried it, instead of getting to the final level to take on Magneto I'd just end up on the Osomatsu-kun title screen instead.
    It's been 30 years and I still have an intense hatred for this godawful thing.

      Salt and pepper was a big part of 80s 90s gaming. Because 3rd and 4th gen consoles used RF cables that needed to be tuned to a channel.
      When you turned the dial to change channels on 70s and early 80s TV. You'd get a brief flash of static and white noise each time it clicked over to the next channel.
      Which is the origin of the effect.

  • @Rolls7
    @Rolls7 6 месяцев назад +7

    Sword of Sodan, Slaughter Sport, XDR, Hard Drivin' and Dark Castle are all widely considered to be worse than this game and might be the true top 5 worst games on the system, just for the simple reason that they're nearly impossible to even play due to bugs, low frame rate, bad hit detection, or a combination of the three. Osomatsu-Kun is boring and might have some annoying controls (so did many other games at the time), but is otherwise quite playable. Not sure where it's considered the worst game. In Japan maybe?

    • @TheRetron8
      @TheRetron8  6 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah, this game has some real hate cooked up for it in Japan. Some people reported not being able to beat it due to it freezing up on the final stage, but most people got frustrated by the maze-like stages and the uninspired presentation. I think they might have had something here if they hadn't gotten hit by the RAM shortage. It isn't unplayable, but it's definitely not worth playing.
      You better believe I'm going to try these other 5 games though! Now I must know which game is the true king of the trash heap!

    • @volo870
      @volo870 6 месяцев назад

      It maybe due to the game being overhyped and quite deceptive? The game looks good, controls feel good, there is style to it. Then it does "bait and switch", when you find yourself going around in circles without any idea what to do.
      Just bad games are mundane. It is especially disappointing when you feel the seedings of the game being good, but the talent was wasted.

    • @TheRetron8
      @TheRetron8  6 месяцев назад

      @@volo870 I think that's the biggest issue with it. Osomatsu-kun is floaty, sure, but the controls aren't what I'd call "bad." The style is super colorful and bright and I think the enemies are fun to look at. It's just that it's such a maze and it's so small that it never reached its true potential. That said, I do want to check out the manga to see what all the fuss was about.

    The character design is so weird, mostly because if I didn't know it was drawn by a Japanese man, I would swear it was ripped straight from a WWII-era "yellow peril" comic.

    • @TheRetron8
      @TheRetron8  21 день назад

      HA! I mean, you aren't wrong. The style of the main antagonist especially had me wondering if I was going to get some sort of content flag. I think Osomatsu-kun himself has a charming look to him, but yeah, lots of Japanese culture and perceived stereotypes in this one. It's no wonder it never saw a western release.

      Yeah as a neurodivergent person, those sounds were REALLY noticeable & annoying, kind of like it's some "Diet Lankybox" crap where it's so overedited, despite the voice sounding quite calm, yet still energetic which fits quite well. When even Jontron's videos, which have screaming voices, feel less edited, then yeah you should've redefined how the sound goes. Otherwise it makes what was a great review of a crap game feel so tedious to get through.

      I own them both, and one gets way more play than the other. Games are more colorful on the Engine and it could actually zoom in and out on Neo Geo fighters using the arcade card.
      The base console is definitely weaker, if we’re talking about how many background layers, number of sprites, etc…, but the color palette and library really seal the deal for me.
