I just received my Magic Keyboard the other day. I love typing on it; it’s incredible. But it also completely destroys the thin and light package of the Smart Keyboard Folio plus the iPad. I love that the Smart Keyboard Folio is waterproof, and can fold up when I want to use the iPad as a tablet. I’m really torn, but I’m leaning towards returning the Magic Keyboard. I love it, but it’s a one trick pony. If I wanted a heavy, thicker laptop, I would have bought a laptop. I think the Smart Keyboard Folio makes the iPad a better iPad. A semantic difference to be sure, but as a full time iPad user, I dont’ think the Magic Keyboard fits my use case. It makes me sad, because it’s one of the best and coolest accessories I think Apple has ever made. But the cons out way the pros for me, unfortuantely.
Same here. I use my ipad pro most of the time taking notes in Notability for my classes. The smart folio allows me to do that with ease. It annoys me too much that id have to be taking the ipad out of the magic keyboard case in order to lay it flat to take notes.
I’m a medical student and I use Notability a lot. I bought the Smart Keyboard Folio for my 2018 12.9 and I really like it. I am tempted to get the Magic Keyboard, but admittedly more for the USB-C port and backlit keys, but I really can’t justify $350+ tax for another keyboard.
100% agreed with you point, I cancelled my order of magic keyboard and just purchased a Smart Keyboard to keep the main point of using an ipad, there is no point for me to turn it into my second laptop which can not do the laptop function.
I haven’t seen anyone mention this option yet, but I plan on getting the smart folio along with either a Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse since I don’t do a ton of word processing. You can get both for a decent price online now and it’ll end up being cheaper than the magic keyboard, plus then I can use the trackpad or mouse for other devices
I have a Pro 11... tried both and kept the Smart Folio as I felt the Magic defeats the purpose of being a tablet. Besides although I love my iPad, it can’t replace my Macbook yet. For instance although it can read files from an external drive, to edit them you need to import them onto the internal drive, and then send them back as duplicates to the external drive, which is cumbersome.
I have the smart folio keyboard for my new iPad Pro 11” and fist I was concerned by the size of its keys. But after one day working on it, I’m so happy because what matters for me is lightness. i still don’t see why people complain about simply just pulling it off and using it like a “tablet” lol. They it it super easy to do it. I mean it’s DESIGNED with MAGNETS to be pulled off and on easily for tablet mode.

These Eyes See Darkness Clearly as a student I don’t really see the problem here. My lectures are over an hours long and I honestly don’t mind taking my iPad out of its case to write on. I mean the only time when I use my Apple Pencil is when I’m drawing protein synthesis models or when I’m drawing organic molecules in my chem and bio classes. A good 85% of the time I’m using a keyboard to take notes.
For students it's really not convinient to take it off in the middle of the class and then find a place for the keyboard, espiacially in the small students' chairs. And i just don't fill comfortable to use it naked... that's the main reason why i'm not buying the magic keyboard.
Question, will skins made for the 11" Smart Folio Keyboard fit on the New Magic Keyboard? Are the dimensions the same as far as applying a Skin? Think I could order a skin for the Smart Folio Keyboard and use it on the Magic Keyboard? Or are they different enough to wait. Thanks! Nice video.
Been very happy with the Smart keyboard folio for 4 years, very light, brilliant cover, can flip over and use the iPad as a tablet, and a fraction of the price of the Magic keyboard. Wish Apple had used luminous paint with its keys, would've been such a simple solution. I've used a Pebble mouse, can do anything a trackpad can do. The Magic keyboard seems really heavy, can't flip it as a tablet, very pricy. Just to add a trackpad? Really?
