The Hey Jude at the beginning would have been the very end of the last ever 'Across The Line' on Radio 5, although that programme continues to this day on BBC Radio Ulster
That's the fun part about the AM radio band. No matter if it's on MW or LW, you can always hear strange stuff going on when tuning around. Also when a station closes down for the night, you start hearing strange noises after the transmitter shuts off.
Michael Darling it closed at midnight. The pips in the recording are the midnight ones. The news, sport and closedown sequence was the same as every night, except that as it had closed they didn't use any Radio 5 branding or even the name after the pips

This was on the night of March 27th/28th 1994, BBC Radio 5 Live started on the morning of 28th of March 1994.

The transmitter goes to reduced power, then is switched off hence why you can hear the interference.
0:00-0:24 The song is "Hey Jude" by The Beatles
30 years ago today
it's not featured in this one but i remember in 1991 before Radio 5 went off the air after midnight their was a melody classical tune playing
They used to play classical pieces at closedown and then random BBCR5 jingles.
Seemed like a fun radio sitcom.
