  • Hey there, in this video i am going to show, how you can make yourself a layout fluid also known as dykem or machinist blue alternative.
    What you will need:
-solvent resistant gloves and eye protection (googles)
    -a small resealable jar
    -a scale
    -a funnel
    -some water
    -copper sulfate
    -a plastic spoon
    -a brush
-some sort of degreaser ( for example acetone)
    -a cloth
-any acid i used 30% hydrocloric acid but for your safety you can also use vinegar or
    citric acid.
    Costs:
    -250g copper sulfate arround 5-7€
    -water basically for free
-any acid for example vinegar or citric acid 0,50€-1€
=in total arround 8€ for several liters of layout fluid
    in comparison:
the cheapest but still good layout fluid i could find costs 19€ +5€ shipping for 500ml.
The basic recipe for the solution is:
    2oz. or 60ml water
1/2 oz. or 14g copper sulfate
some drops arround 5-10 of any acid (less drops if you work with highly concentraded acid)
(you can easily upscale it if you need more but a small amount will last for a lot of marking)
    Instructions:
    1. Weigh out arround 14g or 1/2 oz. copper sulfate and add it to the resealable jar.
    2. Fill the jar with arround 60ml or 2oz. water (warm water not boiling works best) and mix the copper sulfate with the water until no crystals are left.
    3. Add some drops of your acid ( be careful when handling acids and wear proper protection) and mix it.
    4. Preapare your workpiece by removing the scale and cleaning the area with degreaser and a cloth.
    5. Brush on a small amount of the solution and watch ''turn the surface to copper.''
    6. Sweep over the remaining solution on the workpiece with a cloth and ''et voila'' your are ready to scribe your measurements into it.
Btw the solution only works on ferrous-metals.
aluminium, brass, zinc, nickel, stainless steel etc. won't work.
If you have any questions / suggestions let me know in the comments.
I will answer them as soon as possible.
Thanks for watching and see you next time. -Peace ;)
