Most transverse mounted V6 engines require the intake to come off to change back plugs. Did it on my wife's 02 Sonata 2.7 and it was super easy. Few bolts and it comes off. Very simple.
You should know by now there is a small percentage of viewers who complain about anything and everything and give a thumbs down trying to make your life as miserable as their's. You have some of the best video's on Y-tube so let those viewers try to find anything better.....They won't find it. Keep on doing what you do, Eric. Some of the older Fords also had 2 different plug numbers in them for positive and negative firing cylinders. Took me a couple of years to find out why.
I believe anyone can turn bolts but the commentary is why I watch. The diagnostic videos is what I prefer in more detail. I suggest that subscriber should give himself the classic reach around so he can relax.
I just replaced the spark plugs and coils in a 2008 Santa Fe 3.3 with 135K on the clock and original plugs today and it took 2.5 hours, I used NGK plugs and OEM coils, I wasn't chancing using aftermarket that could die in a month after going through what it takes to get to them. Easy enough to change the front ones but getting to the back ones are a pain in the ass. Lucky for me Hyundai was kind enough to leave a bunch of bolts out/loose/stripped out and hoses disconnected when they had worked on the SUV before when my father in law owned it, What a bunch of hacks. This is why I have gone to working on them myself, it's a shame when a dealership mechanic doesn't give a crap enough to do it right. I have worked commercial HVAC for over 30 years and seen my fair share of hacks in my industry as well, I guess there are just people that don't care in every job type out there. Seems like there are very few out there anymore that really take pride in their work.
Eric you got by far the absolute best automotive channel on RUclips. I've been watching you for years I am very impressed. To work on some of the shit that you work on you're my hero. You would make a killing at a dealership. Don't listen to the naysayers do it the way you been doing your videos that's what makes him so good
Hey Eric ...Can't thank you enough...I'm mechanically inclined...but by no means a 'MECHANIC'...You walked me thru this job step by step. Took me 2 days holding my breath the whole way for fear of screwing something up...Finally got up the Balls...turned the Key...and Wala...She Fired right up. After watching SO many videos...So many Hacks...Your Channel made me feel like a Pro (albeit far from one) Once Again, Can't Thank-You Enough...My Next Job will be Rebuilding the Flux-Capacitor!
I don't know if you realize that you through your mannerisms and the work ethic you display here you generate Trust. Not just trust that you're a good mechanic I trust in you as a man. You're what I call good people. And I'm sure your family is good people as well.
I learned the hard way not to trust aftermarket coil packs just a couple days ago. I had a coil pack go bad on my 2007 Camry at about 130,000 miles. I replaced it with an aftermarket model, which worked well for a while. But then it just went bad at 166,000 miles! To make things worse, the aftermarket boot stuck to the spark plug on the bottom of the spark plug tube. Ugh! Thankfully it was on the front bank but it turned a 14 minute job into a 2 hour job just trying to fish out the rubber bits in the rain. A brand new OEM coil pack from my local dearler cost me about $12 more than the aftermarket part that went bad! Lesson learned! The other 5 OEM packs are still going strong.
Sorry to comment on an older video, but this one just reminds me why I buy V-8, push rod engine trucks. There is something wrong with having to remove the intake to do a tuneup..lol
The reason these intakes are shaped the way they are it is part of the whole fuel economy small engine displacement culture we've created. Longer intake runs give you a little more torque. The velocity of the air in the logger just says travel creates momentum. Momentum translates in torque. The straighter the run is going into the piston also improves torque
You miss the Chevy Monza with a V6. That was a real party to change spark plugs on! You had to unbolt the motor mounts you jacket the motor to get to the plugs. Yeah that was real!
I have a 4 cylinder ... with 8 plugs, 4 of them in the back and harder to get to. Changing them in the next couple days when I feel like cursing at the engineers for limited accessibility! Just like when I changed the low/high beam bulbs the other day, had to remove the battery to do the driver's side -_-
@@zakuraayame5091 Did you check your manual? Some bulbs need to be changed by removing the headlight, or wheel liner and getting access there. No hard once you know how.
Loved your video. This is the second one I've used for our 2005 kia sedona. Your attention to detail was awesome. You made what sounded like a horror show go smoothly. And BTW, I actually liked the whole process, ratcheting and all. 👍
Oh man!!!! that intake removal can drive you insane. It's a good thing Mrs. O showed up and eased the process. Looks like you got a nurturing woman Eric. Great Video, "keep on trucking".
I appreciate the fact that you shown every bolt being taken off the back of that engine. I have the same engine and I was so sick of that 2nd bolt being difficult I didn't even put it back in. you showed how hard I worked to get the bowl out in the 1st place it took me over an hour. I won't eventually put that Bolt back in some time today. Thank you for this video
I'm planning a much longer trip than that when I can; I have two jobs I don't trust anyone around here to do and don't have the tools or knowledge/trust in self to do it myself. Valve lash adjustment is one. I'm not going to risk me fooling around in the top of my daily. And the CVT transmission has a shudder from the starter clutch; which requires either a full drain and refill and a burnishing procedure, but from the drain plug you can only get about 3-4 quarts at once, so it is suggested to change it 4 times with driving in between, then do the burnishing procedure. The Honda service writer didn't even know it had a starter clutch, called the starter clutch a torque converter, and many other things that showed he knew nothing about the car but was willing to talk with confidence as if he did. Not letting them touch it, even if it was free. If I had extra cash, I'd beg him to take me to a junkyard so we could rip a rear parcel tray out to replace mine, which is pitted and one of the speaker grilles is disintegrating; and maybe a spare set of wheels for winter tires for the upcoming season ;) If I had extra money, I'd be throwing it figuratively at Mr O to do the stuff I just can't or better said, shouldn't be doing :p
Guilty confession time: Long, chatty RUclips videos work better than ambien to put me to sleep which saves me hundreds of dollars a year. Keep up the good work! ;-) (PS the sounds of air tools boosts the effect)
Eric - Some really old physics - A spark works best when the negative electrode is the sharp one. This has been known ever since the days of the static electricity entertainment industry of old with the big rotary static generators. Between two identical sharp pointy electrodes the polarity does not matter but between a flat surface and a sharp point the breakdown is easier and you get a better spark when the sharp pointy electrode is negative. It's easier to spray electrons out from a sharp point than suck them into a sharp point.
Eric, I really appreciate you and your videos. Thank you for doing quality work! I'm sure you see plenty of vehicles with substandard repair work. I know I do at my shop. I don't know how those people sleep at night. Thanks again and just know that I really appreciate your attention to detail.
Fortunately, the Sedona models after this 1st generation have manifolds that are much easier to remove. The 1st generation Sedona is a good valued vehicle though.

It's a Mitsubishi 6G series motor. They are great reliable workhorses, 300k miles is not uncommon on them. It's similar to a Toyota V6, which also requires upper intake plenum removal, but the rear bracket is even worse on them.
Eric for the guy who complained about you not showing every nut, bolt and turn of the wrench. Just do an unedited video of you eating lunch, talking to customers on the phone as well as those dropping by, petting the dog, the wife telling you about her day, sweeping the floor, cleaning spills, sending parts back, driving to the parts store to return the wrong part, petting the other dog, and an outside shot of the bathroom door. How ever long that takes.
You have created an excellent video. Much much better than any of your competitors. I would not have been able to complete the job without your video. Thank you so much

The 3.5 is in the 06 Sorento. I changed the plugs, but with 145000, it's only a matter of time for the wires and 3 coils. And of course, the old, brittle, no longer available from Kia, wire holders! Great video! Keep up the good work!

I recently had to remove my plenum, different car, but same blind bolts and classic reach around, sooooo, I was glad to see there are no special tricks other than you having all kinds of tools... do I sound jealous? Well that is because I am! Lol Thanks for all you do!
That's a good point about dedicated plug sockets. I've had a few problems with those, too. Once before I had a small part of the boot tear as I pulled it off the plug, and it took a few minutes before i noticed. I couldn't figure out why the plug socket wouldn't fit all the way on. Luckily enough I had a very deep straight 5/8" socket, and once I realized what happened it was easy.
You are a very detail oriented person... If only I lived close to your shop. Please if its not too much trouble please post Year and mileages on vehicles that you are working on; so as a consumer one can expect similar problems from their own vehicles and be proactive.
I always enjoy watching these, one point on deep spark plug tubes. Rather than shop air to blow out, I'll use a powerful shop vac and modulate the extension tube to create a Venturi and get any junk out before removing plugs. I'll do it a second time after I loosen plugs to get other debris, just in case.
Missionary here in Panama, I have a 2005 Kia Sedona. The video is very helpful. I had the coils and plugs , wires replaced about 2 yrs ago. I was not sure how he did the back. Thanks
Now that Eric is going to show every nut and bolt in his videos, now people are going to want to see his every interruption. When the phone rings, door bell, or when Mrs O explains the classic move.
I always use anti-seize when I do the 3v Fords. Those things love to break off in the head - it happens pretty much every time I do one of..... wait a minute... I've never done one of those..... I guess I watched you do it once and it was so labor intensive it felt like I was the one doing it. By the way, I think you still owe me money for that job. :-)
I have a 2007 kia sedona that im trying to fix myself. I have absolutely no idea wat im doing but im learning from your video. Hopefully i can get it running because its so cold outside. And my kids are tired of walking. Fingers crossed.
I love the banter! Feeling the love lol! We have a 02 Sedona thats on its way out. I was looking for a suspension video on it, but came across this. Much more interesting!
I've done this job on our Kia, also the timing belt & water pump. went with OEM parts because they're good & you definitely don't want to do the job again because you went with cheap parts. original timing belt had 130k on it ' over due ' but still looked great. van still running excellent with 170k
Yup true dat! Neighbor took his 04 for a belt/pump etc to another tech cuz I didn't have time to do it. That shop used an aftermarket cheapo kit and the tensioner failed... Belt got sloppy and jumped a couple teeth but luckily didn't slap valves yet. Towed it back to that shop. It took them 2 weeks to straighten it out! Didn't charge him though.
Hello Mr.Eric , I for one enjoy your channel - videos , I feel that they informational, you do agreat job at that , with your tips and experience you show what needs to be shown. Thank you for taking the time to making these videos.
Nice job as always. Loving the volume of videos coming our way. Seems like Mrs O doesn't want anything to do with Dirty Eric. Can't say I could blame her. Has to look it up after you warned me not to.
im getting ready to tackle this job on a 05 hyundai xg350 and its got the same motor im gonna just change the plenum gasket because im already there. good video my friend.
You reference The Lego Movie more than I do, haha! One of my favorite shows...Planning on taking my son to the premier of the new Lego Batman in a few days.
Well that went pretty smooth for a Signpainter (me lol) Kia is running smooth but a rough sound from the cam area. Next project. Thanks the video was very helpful.
Can't believe some a- - holes are out there criticizing you for something as stupid as not showing every nut and bolt turn. The videos are great. Keep 'em up!!!!
Thanks for another good video. I laughed my @** off when you and Mrs O were having a conversation. I checked out urban dictionary. I bet Mrs O rolled her eyes after reading your definition!

I recently had to remove my plenum, different car, but same blind bolts and classic reach around, sooooo, I was glad to see there are no special tricks other than you having all kinds of tools... do I sound jealous? Well that is because I am! Lol Thanks for all you do!
Congrats on being featured on the PicoScope website. Great video.
Oh yeah or you get a little piece of dirt or something wedged ii=n there and the socket won't hit the flats. Been there too haha
A little testy today Erric O ? Another easy repair preformed effortlessly by the Master.
You did a perfect job. I learned a lot in this class for being very early in the a.m. peace out and god bless you & the wife.
You are a very detail oriented person... If only I lived close to your shop. Please if its not too much trouble please post Year and mileages on vehicles that you are working on; so as a consumer one can expect similar problems from their own vehicles and be proactive.
It's the 'reach-around', Mrs. O! The 'reach-around'!
Great tip and advice!
And I thought putting plugs in my 2004 Ford E350 5.4 was a pain, at least I didn't have to pull my intake off. Awesome job as always
Missionary here in Panama, I have a 2005 Kia Sedona. The video is very helpful. I had the coils and plugs , wires replaced about 2 yrs ago. I was not sure how he did the back. Thanks
this guy is amazing I wish he would do a 94 chevy pickup 5.7 throttle body video
Now that Eric is going to show every nut and bolt in his videos, now people are going to want to see his every interruption. When the phone rings, door bell, or when Mrs O explains the classic move.
Thank you, I have to do this tommorrow so I better budget 5 hours! Appreciate your channel, knowledge and humor.
Thank you for the video! I always enjoy your running commentary during auto repairs and installations.
On that KIA the intake gasket to hold it in place is where four drops of super glue comes in handy... lmbo
Woohoo Eric, thanks for the "Two-tip Tuesday"!
Every nut and bolt...I can hardly see the type writer keys because im laughing so hard...That is a great great look for you Eric....Superb
@@adamtrombino106 I believe the OEM tensioner was like over one hundred bucks, but worth it
Just needed Mrs. O to talk ya through it.
I always liked this vintage Sedona but they are a pain to work on
im getting ready to tackle this job on a 05 hyundai xg350 and its got the same motor im gonna just change the plenum gasket because im already there. good video my friend.
You reference The Lego Movie more than I do, haha! One of my favorite shows...Planning on taking my son to the premier of the new Lego Batman in a few days.
Nice video! You and the big guy from Alaska are sure butting out the videos and that is super great for the viewers! Thanks very much for sharing!
Gonna try a tune up 2004 Kia Sedona. Not a mechanic but work on my vehicles by necessity. Very informative video. Thanks !!
Well that went pretty smooth for a Signpainter (me lol) Kia is running smooth but a rough sound from the cam area. Next project. Thanks the video was very helpful.
excellent video - thank you. my 2005 Kia Sedona was showing a misfire on Cylinder 3 and Bank 2 Sensor 1 -no activity
Can't believe some a- - holes are out there criticizing you for something as stupid as not showing every nut and bolt turn. The videos are great. Keep 'em up!!!!
Can you imagine.. every single bolt on an engine swap.. who wants to watch 16 hours of wrench turning?
or more...
gac914
Its probably Scotty Kilmore using a another account.
its a peice of SHIT
thats because some guy thats not even a shade tree mechanic is too cheap to take his to a shop needs every detail to do it himself.
Thank you so much for this video! It's great to volunteer to help tune up my mom's van, but what a pain!!! Thanks again
I have a magnetic spark plug socket - works great and came from the junk tools section at Advance Auto.
Fantastic tip on the spark plug installation @ app minute 33:00. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for another good video. I laughed my @** off when you and Mrs O were having a conversation. I checked out urban dictionary. I bet Mrs O rolled her eyes after reading your definition!
I think we can all relate to needing an extension!
good job my friend ,very helpful do more videos like this
26:40 - what would cause the rear 3 plugs to be oily? Bad gasket?
Honeymooners meets SMA. Awesome!
Eric o don't give up I know customer try to fix their own car then they say I can't do it then they send it down to us auto mechanics
Good video Eric. Now customers will not complain about the labor part of the bill. Ha ha!!! Classic reach around always works.
Things get crusty here in Indiana, too.
you both havent experienced a Scottish winter vehicle!! jeez.
