14:24 "I feel better now that we have talked." That is what we are here for Eric.
Eric...A top-flight mechanic who takes care of his customers. Worth his weight in gold.
Eric says he's not ASE certified BUT hands down! More thorough than MOST of the guys I've met that have cert's!! A true Mechanic! Not just a money hungry parts changer! I would go to South Main Auto from here in Michigan if it was something I couldn't handle....and it would be WORTH the plane ticket AND tow bill!!!!
Let's just put in perspective the "your weight in gold" saying.... So at the gold price right now, at about $1300 an ounce, and my guess to Eric's weight of 178 pounds, with 16 ounces in a pound, we get $3.7 million bucks. Yep, this seems about right!
This was to the comment that appears above yours. Haha! I don't know how my reply to his comment got posted the one below it, I very clearly hit his reply button. Fricken Google!!!!
Last of his kind
Double the price, I mean...Mrs O picked him.
If Eric O isn't the nicest guy and the most honest mechanic in the USA I don't know who is,man I adore this channel! btw the doggies are gorgeous.
Why don't ya kiss him..on the lips.

Mrs. O is a great woman. Rare to come by. Don’t lose her
@Bulitt Nose bro, how are you picking women like that? Or are they becoming bitchy and bossy after you commit?
@Bulitt Nose Your attitude towards women might be the reason your marriages arnt working out.
@deskguy839 I'm sure you're in jail or prison by now and won't ever read this but your comment made zero sense
They used to rebuild them locally in Detroit back in the day. Always worked. Ah the good old days!
I used to live in Detroit is that the place that was up on Grand River near I believe six mile
@@bradhowse7636 they moved farther up Grand River into Redford, if it's the same company.
They were the only place I'd go for starters and alternators when the guy rebuilt them all new parts on the inside never had a problem with one of their alternators or starters
Eric, I have now become addicted to your content. Your attitude and humility are something I watch every day. Whether you know it or not, your stories are therapy to many of us.
After reviewing this one, I rate it as one of the best rant videos on the web...with a strong message about aftermarket"quality"!!
Lifetime warranty means you spend your lifetime replacing faulty parts...
I wish I could give this 3 thumbs up!
Haha thanks. I actually can't take credit for this though- I saw this phrase in a comment section one time and I thought it was great. 😂

I’ve found one of my main problems owning a shop has been parts. InCorrect parts, parts not in stock, crappy parts, late parts. Expensive parts.
I as well hate advance auto reman’d parts as well as crappy Dorman parts. I use denso as much as I can. I know this video is old but I like that they have WorldPac now so I can get as many oem parts as possible now.
This is why I watch your channel - honest opinions that matter. Thanks!
Sometimes used parts (aka, junkyard) are better than "reman".
aka recycled salvage parts
@Joey North ive gone to the junk yard and found a brand new radiator for a 96 c1500 and it jad a new condenser so i was like let me look at the compressor and boom brand new you never know what you might find in the junk yard
@@davidescamilla2594 Junk yard is always the best. Once found a set of tires only a month old for the back of my Stang. Only cost me 15 a piece.

Love the honesty... i go through it as well... junk parts everywhere.
my labor rate suddenly doubles when I call the reimbursement number.
Makes sense!
Damn Straight! That's just PERFECT! Lol 😎
Doesn't matter, there is a rate book where all the labor hours are listed, so the time is locked in. Then there is the going labor rate at the dealerships in the area around you, it's listed in the books too. You can only get up to what the going hourly rate is and no more, at the allotted labor hours listed. In this case, they only pay half the hourly rate.
We use a local business rebuild our stuff.
I feel your pain my man. I have been through sooooo much of the trials of doing things twice or more , come backs, etc because of defective parts trying to save the customer money with non OEM parts. The pain of getting a phone call from a customer's car you just worked on with the same problem just kills the day huh lol. I was debating on buying a used engine yesterday for a customer's car for real cheap w/no warranty but I canceled and decided to go for the more expensive one with a warranty because I just imagined the car coming back to haunt me if I go with the lower price engine. Sometimes cutting corners because of price will cost us more in the long run. I learned many lessons the hard way, My point: The school of hard knocks sometimes will cost you a heavy tuition. Keep your head up brother and keep SMASHIN through the pain.

Eric is having the Chinesium blues, trying to do the best he can with one crap sandwich after another. The man needs a hug and a smile today 🤗
Early 80's I worked for an auto parts store - we went through 3 different rebuild companies trying to find one that the rebuilt parts held up for more than 30 days. We finally found a local place that actually did quality rebuilds, but they only stayed in business for about 3 years then folded due to out of country import rebuilt crap that they couldn't compete on prices with.
Wish we had mechanics like you where i live. Everyone here seems to want to just take advantage of you and squeeze every last penny out of you. Keep up the good work.
After your rant I had to subscribe and of course like the video. As a former mechanic of over 20 years you are the real deal!

Hey Eric, you should consider getting a cheap loaner car for your customers. I recently got one and its been fantastic. No more getting update phone calls every 30 min reminding me that they need the car by 3 and to make sure its ready and "just checking in". Customers are much happier and relaxed and so am I. Peoples attitude completely changes. It used to be that if the work on the car took longer than expected I had to make the dreaded call and have them tell me "I need the car now", "How am I supposed to get to work?", "I can't afford these repairs if I can't get to work", "I have to pick up so and so." Now its "No worries, take as much time as you need, what ever it costs it costs. Just let me know when its ready."
Nutz4Gunz45
Yeah the Acura Honda place o go to gives out free loaners. Super convenient and people won't mind if it takes a little longer. All the cars are all old old with 100k plus but they are clean and that's all that's needed.
That's a great idea, Nutz.
Only problem with that is, here in the Northeast, it would cost you a FORTUNE to do that. In MA for example, the state charges sales tax on the initial sale, then excise tax yearly based on the vehicle's value. $75 for a title, then $60 for 2 year registration. Then there's the insurance - that's the real killer. You could get a $200 beater, fix it enough to make it usable, and pay $1,600 a year just to keep it on the road. You'd definitely have to weight the cost/benefit ratio there.
Eric would probably need 2 or 3 of them with the volume of business he does.
that is good idea...you can write it off at tax time also.
I don't think everyone would want to drive Honda ridgelines....
That's about the only good thing of going to the stealerships is that they give you a loaner. It makes it really convenient.
Eric was a so fortunate to have Mrs O to commiserate with, she is a good listener and a has kind heart .♥️

i feel your pain man. We try our best to save our customers money due to the high price of oem parts. but ive learned that the cheap aftermarket parts. especially DORMAN. Just make it worse, and some customers just think we are trying to half fast our work. Now i just buy my parts from a parts store thats called XL auto parts in houston. and they sell a bunch of OEM and a reasonable price. my philosophy has been i rather want my customer to be a little mad that they payed more the repair. and not deal with it again. compared to being happy for the cheap price but once it messes up they come back pissed due to the part messing up. trust me a HATE the bad days. but ill tell you one thing, what always makes me feel better are some of the comments i read on youtube.
I know this is an old video. I’ve recently come across your channel and love it. Your an awesome tech. I had a Jeep Liberty towed in 3 days in a row for no start. Reman starter. I started it 10 times before customer picked it up. Each time. Customer drove it away. Next morning, no go. When it came in on the hook on 3rd day I flipped out at my front desk, told them to get me a “new” starter. We can’t have customer being towed in day after day because of garbage parts. We had to eat the cost, obviously, but customer didn’t have to return again for a no start issue after that.

Rebuilt autozone starters would fail out of the box most times. I would warn customers but they would still buy them.
I bought a power steering pump from auto zoo and literally 6 months later it died. I went back and asked them why would I buy the same junk a second time? All they said was uhhhhhhhh
I feel ya man! Perseverance man, perseverance, good videos.
A reason the starter may have failed to work properly the first time and then worked properly every consecutive time, is that the Bendix gear probably stayed engaged with the flywheel the entire time, even when you weren't trying to start it. The Bendix gear was probably not properly lubricated, sticking, and takes more force to engage. When you start the car, the flywheel that is starting to spin quicker is generally enough to force the bendix gear back into its rest position.
The quick fix would be to spray some high quality lubricant on the bendix shaft and be done with it. Or even do that before installing them.
It's not a Bendix gear, or a Bendix drive... Bendix starter drives haven't been used since probably the early 1940's!
@@greatnortherntroll6841 thank you! It makes me loco when I hear "Bendix drive" misused to describe any/all starter drives.
You have the experience, by far. Just take the tests. If I can pass the tests, then you can too!
This is actually good advice, because remanufactured stuff is cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Main components, such as starters, alternators and A/C compressors, are better to buy new. Eric O. is doing us a great service. Thanks, Eric O.
I feel your pain, I put 3 cardone rack and pinions in my civic (they all leaked), and two alternators in my tundra. 1st was a carquest, then I said screw it, order a DENSO! For my tundra, it's nothing but facotry parts.
Carquest is owned by Advance Auto,
Denso new or Denso rebuilt? Because Denso don't bother replacing the bearings on their rebuilds (unless the bearings are bad).
@@s99614 The Denso alternator was new. Advanced actually did me a solid and worked with the garage that put the carquest in and covered the cost of the new Denso.
There's a good old third alternative:
OEM from the wrecking yard.

every time I see your video uploads I know it will be among the very best diagnostic and repair vids that can be seen. Your profession is highly underappreciated, the constant high stress from all the attributes you have mentioned that come with this line of work. Your wife sees the toll it takes on you, even today, 6 years later your are still engaged in the fight. And recently a video showed your wife tenderly suggesting you let somebody else in the shop take some of the load off. Pay heed dear man, it would be a great injustice for the stress to take you down.

Nice to see you have those days too. I'm a service tech in the fitness industry and parts is by far my biggest headache. OEM parts are often wrong. Like the seat adjustment pin that is too short from manufacturer. Sorry for your trouble. Keep up the great work, love your videos, I have learned a lot. Steve aka Treadmill Man
Well at least I know it is not just cars :)
The reality of being a mechanic! Good video it’s one of the reasons I only do it for family now.
I know you say Dorman is a multi million dollar company and what do they care, but you have a voice from all of us mechanics out there and there's power to that. I went thru 5 brake rotors from advanced and had to keep replacing them after every 5-6 months because it would start to vibrate. I was able to use the machine to cut the rotors when they started vibrating and it lasted longer for now 🤞
Any "good" customer should know that you yourself don't make the part, you simply install them. Keep your head up Eric. You do great work and I'm sure your customers appreciate all that you do.
Oh they understand but you know how it is...
Nice in theory but that's not the way humans think. They're going to blame the guy they took it to and not the company that sold or produced the shoddy part. They took the car to South Main Auto not Advance Auto Parts so they're going to blame South Main Auto.
How many years have you owned and operated an auto repair business?
You should see some of the stuff us dealer techs see. Brand new cars fresh off the the delivery truck with rod knocks, check engine lights and a 75k sticker price lol
SuperMegaCliff That's crazy, what auto brand?!
Ford
My mother bought a 1998 Ford contour brand new and it only made it about 20 miles and the engine quit. Then ford didn't want to give her another car. They wanted to swap another engine into it instead. She complained enough to get another one though eventually.
I've had great luck with NAPA. Agree that I would never by remanufactured anything from any one though. And I will never buy anything mechanical eg rotates or is integral to operation from Advance, Autozone, o'Reilly's etc. Before I knew better I used to get parts from Trak Auto, talk about horrible. Multiple radiators, alternators starters heater cores, brand new hoses blowing. Last year I bought a transmission mount from Oreillys because I could not get it at NAPA. Lasted one year and the rubber let go. OEM went 13 years. Fortunately I learned the trick of stuffing heater hose in there to solve that problem. But still.
@SuperMegaCliff I seriously doubt that. How does a new truck go from testing in assembly to dealership with a rod knock?
I'm with you Eric fixing something multiple times is for the birds... I went through 2 aftermarket fuel pumps once before getting an OEM
part about a hundred bucks more but worth it because it's been working well the last 4+ years and no
more problems.

We have a great rebuild shop near me that a I always have my started and alternators rebuilt at. I sure hope they stay in business. They do great work.
Dont know if your still using aftermarket starters but I usually test mine out before I put them in the car. To make sure their engaging right. Saved me time a few times. Good luck ...great videos!
