    AB inbevs approach to Camden is how they should have treat all the British breweries. Here's a load of money for merch and advertising, keep doing what you're doing and make us money

    • @stevewheeler6120

      Have to disagree, AB inbevs approach to Camden is to move brewing to Wales, Brew at high gravity, switch to Hop extract and most importantly they now pasteurize the beer which was the whole point of the original beer!

    Yes Simon! This is the type of content we want. Just to point out though that when you start to take price into account you can almost always buy 2 x 10 multipacks of Lost Lager at Morrisons for £17. That then makes it the equivalent of 96p for 500ml. Totally changes the equation if you are happy to buy in bulk.

    Technically the Camden Hells is a mixture of a Helles and a Pilsner.
    Really underrated beer. Tends to get looked down on these days because it’s popular. Weirdly, I’ve found that if you drink it out of a 330 bottle you get much flavour from the German hops whereas in the glass it’s a more rounded beer.

    • @GavJ_81
      @GavJ_81 11 дней назад +1

      Yes I agree, people hate on British lager as it's mainly brewed under license trash so this comes under the hammer too as it's now ABInBev. Must admit though they have nailed it really for the mixture of a Helles and Pils. I love Helles style and you get that for sure and it doesn't come at stupid prices you're paying a bottle shop for German imports.

      Somebody finally talking sense! I live in Siegen as a Brit. The beers in Germany are ok, but the saying ‘you don’t know what you’re missing until it’s gone’ comes to mind. There are some absolutely barnstorming British beers. All of my German beer enthusiast close friends love the British beers and brew their own stouts, ales for years. The casual drinkers in Germany are very insulated and only drink German beers and have a bit of a superiority complex, so that is one thing I find much more sympathisch with British drinkers. Both countries make great beers, but Krombacher isn’t one of them!

    • @sisi2484
      @sisi2484 12 дней назад +1

      @cehaem2 warsteiner is as near a commercial lager as it gets in germany . As for augustiner etc. Things are quite regional in Germany .. it's only recently that it's become widely available in Northern Germany , Berlin etc ... I saw it on sale in a supermarket in north Italy last week , and hb and ofc paulaner.. you can get these gerrman and bayern beers in the specialist beer shops in uk , albeit at 4 times the price they are in Germany and the regions they are made. Bottles of Augustiner helles are a fair bit cheaper in munich than berlin for example.

    • @cehaem2
      @cehaem2 12 дней назад

      @@sisi2484 I mentioned Warsteiner in the context of having a distribution network vs being independently owned and operated. If you read my comment again you will notice that i mentioned exactly that in the last sentence. Compared to Warsteiner Augustiner is a dwarf. Augustiner has been available outside of Munich for over 20 years. I remember buying it from a local Getränkermarkt in Bochum in 2006. it started popping up in Berlin cornershops around 2000, just as the gentrification process was about to kick off. iIt gained popularity because it is an independent brewer. Pretty much each and every offie in the UK or Ireland does it now. Even my local offie (and I live in NI) used to sell Spaten and another ABK from Kaufbeuren. Don´t ask me how it got there. One of the Belfast pubs even did Engelbräu on tap some 10 years ago. I haven´t noticed a significant difference in Augustiner pricing between Bavaria and the rest of the country.

    Kronbacher has dropped an ABV. It was 4.9 percent. Maybe that's why they don't highlite ABV on the label.

    I think you previously gave Hofbrau original a 9/10. Surely we can't be dropping a point for £1 extra for an imported beer from Germany Simon?
    I do like Krombacher and it's fine. But a Hofbrauhaus lager being knocked out for that and god forbid a Camden Hells for the sake of £1 is madness...only IMO mind.
    We will never drive the price of the great German beers down if we keep paying cheaper money for inferior stuff back here. If you want better pricing for an imported beer then the numbers need to be reflected in sales.
    Camden Hells is that inferior stuff I spoke of IMO. I've tried it on PD, in pubs, in bottles and wee 330ml cans to see if there was something I was missing. I cant see it.
    Anyway the cool wee cat agrees with me, as soon as you knocked Hofbrau out in favour of Camden it was making it's feelings very clear.

    am deffo not a new-world lager(?!?) fan as it reminds me of early-teen parties where you try and invent a version of snakebite by mixing leftover cans at the end of the night.. lager and bitter do not mix too well..

    I quite like a Lost now and then. It is a bit lighter and more rounded, but miles better that Carling and other British brewed 'lagers'.
    But answer me this - why when you criticise the 'earthy' smell of Burton brewed lagers because of the hard water, do you rate Cambden so highly when they must also have hard water? Or do they treat there water somehow?

    • @realaleguide
      @realaleguide  14 дней назад

      Camden more than likely soften their water before they brew.

    Big fan of the Camden Hells, tastes much more like a proper Lager than the BrewDog "Lost Lager", which is too sweet and fruity and not crisp, clean, and dry enough to be a proper lager in the Czech or German style.

  • @richardwilliamson2366

    You need to look at bottle size too in terms of value for money with the price. Camden seems a bigger bottle than Krombacker for the same money?

    These German win on taste, but without question Camden Hells is the best of our British lager and brewed under license rubbish. What you've got to remember German beers are pretty expensive and you can get some good deals on Camden Hells now and then so better to stretch your cash rather than spend of fortune on a Hofbrau.... Or jusy get Pilsner Urqell and forget about comparisons!
    I'm a heavy critic of our British lagers but Camden Hells have nailed something that it claims to be a pils/hells. Shame its pretty crappy on head retention but could make the same claim againat many, Budvar , Paulaner etc
