Ex band director guy here again - great job noticing a lot of why this band is so incredible! Yes, Akane is using two feet - it's the kind of double pedal with two pedals, one of which is near the high hat. She's got INCREDIBLE feet and what you'll notice more and more is how she uses super complex patterns incorporating both hands and feet - where maybe out of say, four sixteenth notes, one or two random ones will be a bass drum kick and it's so smooth you'll never know - of course she can also do the machine gun thing where she just blasts out rapid fire sections of double pedal at well over 200bpm. What's more impressive to me is her musicality. Like Keith Moon, or jazz great Roy Haynes, she often plays like a lead instrument - and if not she'll use drum patterns that change every measure, making you wonder how the hell she even manages to learn the part. And she's always smiling really big - as are you when you listen to the best band on the planet. This is just one tiny thing about these ladies that makes you grin so hard you'll need to pop some Advil for your jaw. Their songwriting? Unbelievably great and stylistically all over the map. Stay with them - they'll make your whole world better. I listened to mostly hard core bop and prog, but this band rekindled my love of hard rock with their joyful and masterful playing and songwriting. Cheers! (PS - RIP Wayne Shorter 😥)
And to actually think akane was actually originally a single kick drummer until I think it was either saki or kanami actually mentioned that she would sound better as a double kick

It shows the ladies' confidence in each others' abilities that they can fool around like this while all of them slam out note-perfect Rock at full tilt. At 11:43 - A brief glimpse of Kanami laying down one sweet rolling chord pattern - pure class. THE best live Rock band on Earth. And beyond.
Akane has improved her double kick since this concert alongside all her other skills. In fact each member of the band have continually improved their skills from day 1, they are not content to just sit back. Miku on rhythm, the founder of the band, is much admired by many of us, she is for me the heart and soul of the band (and a canny busnesswoman I reckon), bearing in mind that she only started to learn how to play guitar after the band was formed and now she is a fully fledged Rockstar playing an equal part with 4 astonishing bandmates. And I haven't even mentioned that Miku is the primary lyricist and her secondary vocals are always superb and that she can even take lead vocals and steal your heart.
I still cannot get over the fact that Miku was using the Guitar as prop during her Cafe days and only learned to play it after she started this incredible band. She is a true legend to have given everything to keep her dream alive. The Pigeon is a Rockstar, po!

During concerts the band gives the lead singer (Saiki) a break and will insert an instrumental, like the one you previously reacted to, into their playlist along with a song where Miku (rhythm guitar and vocals) will take the lead. They also often include a 10 to 15 minute 'magic spell' where Miku will take centre stage with audience participation, sometimes other members of the band remain on stage, sometimes they join in with her. This is sometimes followed with a song where Miku sings the lead. They put on a good show.
Band Maid is blessed with great talent at all positions in the band. One RUclipsr once said that Band Maid might have the highest level of aggregate talent in any current rock band. Not one great player accompanied by good, or average, players, like most bands. I saw them live last October in D.C. and it was one of the best shows I’ve been to over the decades (I am 56 so I’ve been to quite a lot).
They are definitely very good at playing instruments. I feel like they bring a feminine perspective. They're more interested in playing pretty notes than hard and fast.

she has a double bass on a single drum, one of the two pedals is next to the high hat, but still she is kinda famous for her rhythmic double bass work, accuracy and fill choices
Thanks for sharing! I keep saying it's magical how this drummer can create such intricate drum patterns with such a small kit. She's "Jimmy Page" certified (he met her after the show) and most importantly, the happiest drummer in the world. No matter how difficult or fast it is, she just keeps smiling😀 Awesome!
If you want more Akane, the live version of Freedom has a long solo for her. I haven’t checked out the newer live videos, but I’m sure more of her is in those as well!
As a music teacher the thing you'll love about Band-Maid is the compositional aspects of their music. Oh yeah, there's all the melodic riffs and hooks you could ever hope for, but it's the interesting and spicy way they deliver it that separates them from other bands. Like the drumming on Domination: first time I heard it, what struck me was that Akane was not playing in a straight-ahead heavy metal or power metal type of way. There were so many off-beats and creative techniques she was working in to give it a unique feel. Same with the bassist (MISA): that solo is a crazy quilt of pick, slap, chords, and glissandi.
Akane is using a double bass pedal. There is a pedal for the bass drum right next to her high hat pedal. So yeah two feet double kick. She can get really fast, this is no where near how fast she can get. Her fastest is 220bpm! (On the song Black Hole).
I love seeing people react to BAND-MAID for the first time. I saw your 'Onset reaction. I only came across this truly amazing band about a year ago, and they are now my favorite rock band. Everyone in this band is phenomenal, and all their songs are complete ear candy. This band delivers every time, without fail.
I see someone already informed you that Akane is using a double pedal; you can tell because at 8:20 her left leg is pumping but the hi-hat is stationary. I fully believe that Anake, MISA (bass guitar), and Kanami (guitar) could start their own instrumental sub-unit and be great.
From April 2020 issue of Rhythm & Drum Magazine! Akane's pedal gear, the DW-9002 was selected. 2-way beaters with plastic surfaces. The joint rod had been replaced with Pearl's Z-link Universal Joint. i would share the article as it has pictures but youtube seems to not like that idea Drum Kit set up TAMA STAR Bubinga 22"×16"BD、10"×7"TT、12"×8"TT、16"×16"FT 【Snare Drum】 LUDWIG Black Beauty 14"×5" 【Cymbals】(L→R) ZILDJIAN 14" K Bottom HiHat(Top)+14" K Top HiHat(Bottom)、 18" A Custom Projection Crash、 20" K Custom Hybrid Ride、 18" S Trash Crash、 19" A Ultrahammered China
Yes they are very, very good. The three core musicians - Kanami (guitar), MISA (bass) and Akane (drums) are all trained, experienced musicians. Miku (rhythm guitar) and Saiki (main vocals) are talented and have grown with the band over the last 10 years. A lot of their sound is based on Kanami's compositions with all the others adding their bits to the whole. A true rock band that is able to do it all no matter what style or genre they choose. They have given me a reason to love music again!

Quite a lot of metal musicians use a single bass with double pedals. If you love drummers you should try Jinjer-Pit of Consciousness live or Vortex mv. I have seen Band Maid live and they are simply amazing performers.
About the drums.. my guess is that she has a second pedal for the bass extended out right next to the hi hat pedal. Have seen it many times, especially in metal bands.
For a very tasty extended drum solo from "The Gorilla" (for that is her nickname), methinks you would appreciate their live performance of 'Freedom'. Not only a great drum solo but a great song as well. You will appreciate how she continues the patterns of the drums through the transition and bridge, into the guitar solo. Such brilliant writing. And such a happy bunch of Maids up on the stage.
Shawka , I really enjoyed your reaction video...and I am looking forward to more. It made me smile as I watched your reaction to these 5 Japanese women who have successfully removed the 'negative darkside' of rock/metal and replaced it with Hope, Courage, Light, Humility, Hard Work, Humor and a ever increasing amount of Talent ... the have over 100 songs/compositions... and they have an alter-ego...know as 'Band-Maiko'... a more Japanese/ Geisha version of themselves... which started as an April Fool's Day joke in 2019.....enjoy the ride!
Should have said this is early Band Maid from some years ago. They have progressed in leaps and bounds since then and are the best rock group on the planet now.
To add to the other comments regarding double bass, Akane also has great foot-heel techniques that she uses in other songs (not this one) so where it sounds like double bass, it’s really just one foot
They're all incredible. They were in England several years ago and Jimmy Page had to go backstage to meet Akane, the drummer, and sing her praises. If you really want to hear Misa (bass) watch the live version of NO GOD. Kanami (gtr) writes most of the musical ideas and the rest of the group work on their various parts individually. Miku (founder and rhythm gtr) writes the lyrics. Double pedal. WATCH FREEDOM for a nice drum solo. Watch FROM NOW ON for great guitar. Best rock band on the planet but they have some beautiful songs too.
I think from memory akane can hit 225 bpm and she's actually a trained herself to play as a double kick drummer on the single bass drum after one of the other band members suggested that she go double kick
It's been about the weeks since I've been introduced to this band (Thank you Herman Li) and I can't not (it's a double negative, get over it lol) smile every time I hear them. Kanami makes me want to go out and buy A PRS (the 408's are gone now though, boo :/ ) and Akane is one of the few (Clay Aeschliman and Taylor Hawkins being the others) drummers that get me excited about a drum kit. I can go on and on about the others as well, but my point is that few bands have made me as happy is these women make me and I've been loving every second of it.
"I'm drawn to the bass player." You and everyone else, my man! MISA! MISA! MISA! She's just phenomenal. She plays Black Cloud 5-string basses and together with Akane Hirose on drums they make a formidable rhythm section!
Great reaction. Thank you. I hope Band-Maid reactions are coming more frequently from now on. No pun intended (I`m only here for Band-Maid) This was my intro to B-M about a year ago. I was hooked after the first listen, Apparently they don`t do catch and release because I`m still hooked. The guitarbattle between Miku and Kanami🥰is still my #1 B-M moment. Remember, there is a saying among us Maidiacs: "Shut up, Kanami is speaking" (lead guitarist) so tread carefully when you pause during a solo😉
Continue "breaking new gate." TinyHat-san approves. BTW, when MISA, Miku, and Kanami go up to Akane's drum set, they are making hengao faces (weird faces) at Akane, trying to throw her off the beat; it never works. Also, Akane didn't use a double pedal until Kanami suggested she try it.
I believe "the Reactor" ;-) is gonna wanna know the Maids names at some point: Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, Vocals, Lyricist, SpokesPigeon, and Founder Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Main Composer Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums (really a "kit" more than a "set", and she uses double pedals ;-) MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" aka: MISA MISA MISA - Bass
Freedom Live from the same Concert has an amazing Drum Solo from Akane ! She is great as everyone in this Band . The Solo Parts in the Middle are just an addition in the Live Performance , not on the Studio Version. They do this a lot , different Openings , Solos etc. and they even change these from Time o Time. I know that everyone wants you to check out other Bands and Songs. Please check out Gacharic Spin Mindset. It blew my Mind .
You have to watch "FREEDOM (Official Live Video)". You need to watch "FREEDOM (Official Live Video)". You want to watch "FREEDOM (Official Live Video)". Yes, 3 times. It may not be enough, but you can judge that by yourself. Trust us, we know 😉
i would recommend a reaction of Band Maid Freedom as the timing and happiness of the drum sole is a joy to watch Akane is the best female drummer i have seen to come out of japan in recent years, the only woman to come close to her is Junna who has clearly got better feet and is the only person i could see fill in for Akane if ever needed. if you want to have a look at her try "Trident -Voltage" or she does some incredible covers on her own channel either way good reaction to domination also you should consider the energy the song was played with being an 1hr30 into a 1hr40 concert and the 22nd song of 25 played set, their work rate and precision is insane
This song is the best example on how they tweak the songs live. On the studio we don't get the halftime feel, bass and guitarsolo. One of the few songs they've struggled to do the same on, is Blooming. It's close to perfection, and a display on how the instruments are supporting and plays off each other. Kanami is a genius. Hope she doesn't burn herself out..
So clever how the lyrics are half English, half Japanese, a lot of their songs are like that, really makes it accessible to everyone For a suggestion for another incredible Japanese band to blow your mind, I’d highly recommend SOKONINARU. WOW, WOW, WOW is about all that you can say about their songs
Great reaction.... I think you would really like their song "Play" live. It was also originally an instrumental written by Kanami (lead guitar) for a live show vocal break... but, Saiki loved it so much she talked Miku (rhythm guitar/ backing vocal) to write words for so she could sing it. So, Kanami had to write "Onset" to be their instrumental for live shows.
This is the ten year anniversary of Band Maid. They are quite unique with each member being allowed to shine. The only sad thing is that Rock music would have been saved with more people in the West being exposed to these women. As for Akane, the drummer. MISA the Bassist. Both would be great at magic tricks. It takes close ups to show the speed and the skill they play at. MISA and her disappearing pic when she slaps is a thing of beauty. Kanami the guitarist is just wonderful. Saiki is a great singer. Miku is often overlooked but her backing vocally is the emotional crutch of many songs as is her rhythm guitar playing.
Nothing makes me happier than a bunch of cute Japanese ladies telling us western boys "we're gonna rock, and rock harder than you have been" and lapping us along the way. These chicks absolutely rule, and I couldn't be happier to have learned about them.
You are correct- Akane has a double peddles on one bass drum, two feet, two hands, it makes no difference which ones she uses. As for the other band members, Miku- Band Founder 2013, Lyrics, Vocals and Guitar. Kanami- Music and Lead guitar. Saiki- Some lyrics, Lead vocals and MISA- Bass (all styles)- you may have noticed. The quality of composition has developed quite a bit since this recording, which is a few years old now.
Its a double base pedal on a single base drum. Watch AKANE demo the Roland TM-1 here. ruclips.net/video/a9B5b_FqsC4/видео.html Play MISA's bass solo back slowed down to half speed - watch her switch from slapping to picking back to slapping as she tucks and untucks the pick into her finger. As for KANAMI on guitar - she writes the music for BAND MAID with MIKU writing the lyrics. MIKU is also the brains that came up with this idea of a band dressed as maids. Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume? MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!” Interviewer: Why should people listen to Band-Maid? MIKU - “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.”
Judgement Day ruclips.net/video/IF3NLN4D6a4/видео.html here's Lovebites from the album they just released on the 22nd of February it has new bassist Fami replacing Miho.
This band is my favorite band for the last 6 years. i kept listening to the same stuff for years becuase the last bands i liked were distrubed and linkin park. Band Maid rekindled my love of hard rock. they are amazing. All are incredible at MINIMUM if not the best. Jimmy Page, yes THAT Jimmy Page, said Akane the drummer was a reincarnation of John Bonham in 2016.
Not even joking the studio track of this is somewhere around like my 25th favorite song of theirs. Their catalogue runs deep. If you want another live track I suggest Play. If you want a music video I suggest Warning. Warning has a live video, but it's from their Covid/online concert, so there's no audio so the crowd energy is gone; better to go with the MV since it has a touch more clarity.
Great reaction sir! What you really want to watch is " BAND-MAID / FREEDOM (Official Live Video) " ruclips.net/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/видео.html to see Akane (Drummer) do an awesome (30 second) drum solo that is not only wild, but fits seamlessly into the song. 8:33 - "That guitar player is shredding right now"
Us - "Oh...boy. You have no idea"
This was song # 22 of 23 at their 2020 Shibuya live concert. This not only shows you their talent, but their high energy, especially after a 2+ hour performance.

I automatically give a like when the reactor mentions Saiki's growl in the beginning. Subscribed as well!!
she has a double bass on a single drum, one of the two pedals is next to the high hat, but still she is kinda famous for her rhythmic double bass work, accuracy and fill choices
Thanks for sharing! I keep saying it's magical how this drummer can create such intricate drum patterns with such a small kit. She's "Jimmy Page" certified (he met her after the show) and most importantly, the happiest drummer in the world. No matter how difficult or fast it is, she just keeps smiling😀
Awesome!
I think the next Band-Maid reaction should be "Freedom" OLV, I know you'll enjoy it!
BAND-MAID TRIVIA: The drums were NOT Akane's first instrument. She was originally a trombonist. BTW, she still plays trombone.
That's awesome!
Another trivia note. Akane and Misa both attended the prestigious Tokyo School of Music and that is where they met initially.
The joint rod had been replaced with Pearl's Z-link Universal Joint.
i would share the article as it has pictures but youtube seems to not like that idea

After Kanami finishes her last blazing solo, Saiki sings, "Our pulses race together." Indeed! Band-Maid. Domination. Nuff said! Thx, Shawka!
Thanks Shawka!
Blooming should be your next Band-Maid reaction

Akane is the master of the double kick pedals, she apparently got her first double pedal set when she was 17.
I don't want to recommend a brand. Google double kick pedal.
Drums = FREEDOM LIVE REACTION
Keep going down the BAND-MAID "pigeon hole". You won't be disappointed. IMHO, they are the best rock band on the planet.🤘✌
Alane has a double bass. The left pedal is near the hi hat.
You're going enjoy this journey.
She definitely has a second bass pedal on an extention next to her high hat pedal. Still incredible
Great reaction! I love this band! Made three trips to see them live. They are incredible. More please! Freedom live has a drum solo you will like.
I'm pretty sure Akane (the drummer) has a double-pedal setup, so she's using both feet to play those notes.
Akane (drummer) has two bass peddles. The left one is right next to the high hat.
If you like this little drum feature, you *really* need to check out Freedom (Official Live)
Band-Maid is going back to the states in May I think ... try to get a ticket to see them... You will not regret that!
Listening to Band Maid makes me smile, every time, they are amazing!
Forgot to mention, the pigeon also sings pretty.

That was a double bass, she doesn't use the leg for the hight hat in the song, both her feet were where using the two pedals hitting on the bass drum
I think from memory akane can hit 225 bpm and she's actually a trained herself to play as a double kick drummer on the single bass drum after one of the other band members suggested that she go double kick
Kanami was the one who suggested it. Akane had never played a double pedal before then.
The rising sun of Japan also has five shinning Stars surrounding it. Akane, Kanami,Misa, Saiki,Miku.
I'm pretty sure that Japan is actually considering adding five little stars to their flag.

@@Kevin6059 The rise of the silly people. See it this summer in a theater near you. Rated R.
Saw them live in Seattle their last tour, and yes...they really are this good. Highly recommend seeing them live.
No pun intended (I`m only here for Band-Maid)
This was my intro to B-M about a year ago.
MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!! 🥃🥃🥃 Badass Bass Assassin. The best Hard Rock band in the world right now in my opinion 🤙🏼
I believe "the Reactor" ;-) is gonna wanna know the Maids names at some point:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, Vocals, Lyricist, SpokesPigeon, and Founder
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Main Composer
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums (really a "kit" more than a "set", and she uses double pedals ;-)
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" aka: MISA MISA MISA - Bass
They are all awesome
men, you have to react to the song called "freedom" by band maid and pay attention to that drum solo that akane does. OMG
here ruclips.net/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/видео.html&ab_channel=BAND-MAID
It is double bass that she’s using for all that syncopated stuff.
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!

One more professional reactions that appreciates BM skills.
i would recommend a reaction of Band Maid Freedom as the timing and happiness of the drum sole is a joy to watch
Akane is the best female drummer i have seen to come out of japan in recent years, the only woman to come close to her is Junna who has clearly got better feet and is the only person i could see fill in for Akane if ever needed. if you want to have a look at her try "Trident -Voltage" or she does some incredible covers on her own channel
either way good reaction to domination also you should consider the energy the song was played with being an 1hr30 into a 1hr40 concert and the 22nd song of 25 played set, their work rate and precision is insane
So clever how the lyrics are half English, half Japanese, a lot of their songs are like that, really makes it accessible to everyone
For a suggestion for another incredible Japanese band to blow your mind, I’d highly recommend SOKONINARU.
Move over Beethoven, there is a new composer in town and her name is Kanami... Love these ladies..
Akane (the drummer) uses double kick pedals for bass drum. That's how she's getting that fast, machine-gun like sound from her drum.
Watch AKANE demo the Roland TM-1 here. ruclips.net/video/a9B5b_FqsC4/видео.html
Play MISA's bass solo back slowed down to half speed - watch her switch from slapping to picking back to slapping as she tucks and untucks the pick into her finger.
MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
Interviewer: Why should people listen to Band-Maid?
MIKU - “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.”
ye, she's a good drummer,

If you like a little growl, and amazing 3 piece band, try Jinjer.
If you like hearing music from a composting standpoint, try Mob Mentality from Earthside.
Kanami is speaking.
She looks like the happiest drummer on the planet! My favorite drum solo of all time!
I think some of the drummer fills are on a track
😁
She got two bass pedals
Double base pedal
Hirose Akane is one of the best drummers in the world.

Na ja. Én egy elfogult valaki vagyok.... :DD
Band maid and Baby Metal are my 2 favorite bands. What I've noticed from the Japanese performers that every performance is consistant great. Never 2nd rate,
