  • In this tutorial I will take you step-by-step through adding a zipper pocket to any bag lining. I am demonstrating on the Kleier Crossbody lining but this method can be adapted to other bag patterns. Note, if your pattern has a unique silhouette or tapers toward the base please consider how pocket placement and size may need to be adapted. I provide instructions for a pocket with a closed bottom and also for adding a pocket to be used for turning/birthing the bag.
Pocket lining width should be 3” less than the narrowest part of the bag lining piece. Pocket facing should be equal width to the pocket lining and 2” in height.
For pocket lining height I like to use a rough formula of 2(x-3), where x = finished bag height (not the length of the lining piece!). This formula works down to a minimum bag height of approximately 7”. Under 7” I would still use an 8” pocket length to ensure the pocket is of usable size.
    Quick reference guide for measurements:
Bag height of 7”: 2(7”-3) = 8” pocket lining height (recommended minimum length for usable pocket size)
Bag height of 8”: 2(8”-3) = 10” pocket lining height
Bag height of 9”: 2(9”-3) = 12” pocket lining height
Bag height of 10”: 2(10”-3) = 14” pocket lining height
Bag height of 11” = 2(11”-3) = 16” pocket lining height (recommended maximum)
Add 1” to lining height if the pocket will be used for turning the bag
Zipper should be at minimum the same length as the pocket width.

After sewing the facing, I meld the stitching and press the seams open. Understitching helps to keep the facing rolled to the back, keeping the lining rolled about 1/16” or so toward the back, hiding the facing.

That’s a great tip Patricia!! I’m going to try it on my next pocket, I think it would particularly helpful for sturdier linings like WPC. Thank you for sharing!

@@OKSew474Yes, please show a video on that idea. I’m not understanding what she is trying to explain but would love a new trick to keep lining and facing rolled to back. Thanks for your videos. There is always a little something useful I did not know in them.
