Ok so I have been practicing this move for about a month. What a HUGE difference it has made. I can now get to my left side with easy. The last part for me was how I used my wrists. There are a couple of videos out from Eric Cogomo that explain the throw vs. twist method. I was a twist method type, but once I started using the throw method...wow what a difference. But that is just me.
@@CartierGolf Well been working on it for a year now. My bad habits (many MANY years of bad habits) creep in still. I will say when I can feel it, the freedom and ease of swing is incredible, distance and accuracy is awesome. For me, its rather difficult on the full swing because of years of bad habits but from 85 yards in, awesome.
This drill if thrown into a tight spin does so many good things, push off lead foot for power get correct angle of attack and most importantly the correct release at the right time.
thank you thank you thank you. went to the range halfway through your video and was finally able to hit driver. I struggle off the tee and this is the feeling I'm missing to break 90. thank you
I remember another instructor/author ~30 years ago (sorry, forget who) was advocating throwing the club (literally) to train into a net, astonishing the low handicappers in his classes watching beginners before and after video swings, as their body movement/speed transformed very quickly with this simple concept. Thanks!
I could tell my dog was wondering why I was throwing sticks in such a curious fashion on the walk tonight! 🙂 I liked the feeling of it though... thanks again, Martin
Steve...this looks like it could be the best possible way to find the "right feeling" for a proper release. I can't wait to get back to the range and try this. Thanks
@@Inmotion70 really interesting to watch the slow motion example. It becomes evident that your left foot steps forward toward the target when the club, your arms and your upper body are still turning back. This, I think, is the part of "loading" I never accomplished. I think I go back in one piece and forward in one piece separate from each other.
As a new flapper. Kinda loss it but this video help me get back to hitting it high and straight. Critical to do or the flap will not stay on plane. If you are getting big draws or pushes, you need to do this. Under, up and out.
Since Mike's swing was a right hand dominant throwing motion, wouldn't it be more beneficial to throw the club with the right hand only? There is a video out where Mike attached a club to his left shoulder with a rope. The rope took the place of his left arm. He then swung/threw the club with his right hand and said " step and throw".
What you are doing is giving the student positive feedback on timing and when to add the horsepower,I use a weight on a rope and swing it in circle similar to a golf swing and add hand motion to increase speed at the bottom, also hitting dixie cups this way gives you instant feedback on the velocity by the difference in the sound of object hitting the cup as your speed increases.
Thank you Steve...this turned on a light bulb for me, I was visually imagining something else. Can’t wait to try this at the park then at the range. 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Steve, do you also feel this (slamming the club down behind your right foot) or do this in your swing when you throw the club? ruclips.net/p/PLMqSI7O1pzeylvN-ScXzMspsi4joPtQVg
Great demonstration of this drill, never seen it explained quite this way, and it makes more sense as far as the release is concerned. Thanks for this...still under snow but when it clears will give this a go! Subscriber in Nova Scotia .
I first read about this from Jackie Burke jnr, his father taught this. First time I tried I, my club ended up behind me cos I was a flipper. Spent some time ironing this out and I was in paradise. Thanks for bringing this up Steve, it's a great drill
sadly most instructors teach the hold or stable release...but it's hard on the body and doesn't add any distance. I loved your recent video on how the wrists move in the release.
Got to remember this for my next practice. Shawn Clements from Quebec, Canada teaches the same thing. Thanks for all the great tips Steve. I’ll be 64 in less than two weeks and have only been playing for five years. I enrolled in your hit it longer course and I am slowly but surely gaining yardage with my drives. Very encouraging. ☀️🏌🏻⛳️😎
Hey Steve at the 1:24 minute mark you have an Orb fly from the Left side above your head on an angle (abt 45 degree) down to the right side. Think its Mike?
hi, great videos as always. a lot of mike malaska and shawn clements thoughts are similar to yours. you guys ought to get together and form an awesome school.
That's a fascinating mental image, Steve. The tight helicopter spin strikes me as a particularly useful to get the "feel" you referred to. I wonder if the flight of the thrown club with a tight spin would also help program the feel of a pulled, straight, and sliced drive; for example, if you meant to spin-throw it straight, but it went off to the right, I speculate that your errant release would replicate a pull and/or hooked drive. Your thoughts?
Mike..Thanks from the UK. You have quite a few fans here as well. There are quite a few teachers here (young guys),who teach this method, although not referred to as "the Mike Austin" method but it closely resembles it. Right side vertical extension and left side at impact. Side bend rather than other methods. The guys at Zen Golf Mechanics are interesting and closely resemble what Mike (and you) teach. Great stuff, I would really like to see you and your facilities sometime (Covid permitting). Would be a long trip but well worth it methinks.
"Covid permitting"..... I do hope you've come to realize that the big "c" was a psychological operation to see just how obedient the masses will be, when ordered to do so? "permitting" is a very appropriate word. Never again bow to the elites, instead be free and live........ consequences be damned.
Great video!! Question: WIth this motion, will the club "face square up" at impact?? It does not look possible to square it up....please help with that....thank-you!!
Great video Steve. In doing this, and also the sidearm ball throw you advocate, I suffer periods where the object goes hard left of the desired target. Obviously I am holding on too long and not releasing properly. It isn’t every time but enough that I know I don’t have it down pat. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions to help me be more consistent with this?
Hard left means you're either flipping the face over or you're not shifting and turning enough before impact so the low point is too early. At least those are the most common 2 things.
One of the best tips ever! Thanks Steve. One question do you have a preference for “squaring” club face thru impact? Strong grip or twisting shaft on down swing? Is either necessary?
This eliminates the need to buy golf balls which are terribly expensive anymore. Is there a way to reinforce the club so it doesn't break easily. I imagine working your way through 18 holes of golf would result in much metal fatigue of the club and i might need to get super stiff shafts to compensate for landing a club on a cart path or into a tree. Also, how do I "putt" once I get to the green. Do I turn the club into a spear of sorts and Chuck it into the empty cup? Anyway, I really like this new way of playing the game I imagine it's gonna be a lot more fun and rewarding throwing clubs around the course vs hitting a tiny little ball which can be frustrating. I threw the hammer in college so I'm thinking this will come quite naturally to me and I can FINALLY play golf like a pro. Thanks
STEVE I tore my glute and hurt my right shoulder due to terrible early extension. This then caused a terrible strain of the 2 ligaments attached to my sacrum. It’s taken me 16 months to heal enough to play. I want to get your take on this. I stand way too straight and I’ve discovered that has made your release impossible for me. If I’m more in the ready position, I can do this 100x better. Does that make sense?
Steve, I see you have an Orange Whip, I have one as well, but it does not get used much - a crime given how much it cost, do you have some nice drills or ideas that will help me ( and others perhaps ) on how better to use the Orange whip on the driving range NB also good to see you nudging towards 50k subs :-)
Are there any changes to the throw release for irons? Should the throw be more level to promote more of a downward strike instead of upwards at 15 - 30 degrees for driver?
Great video Steve. Thank you! Can't wait to try this out. One question though. Do I use the same swing feeling for both drivers and irons? I assume that even though we want to feel like the club is being tossed at a slightly upward angle, if we did this with an iron, at impact it would still hit downward on the ball?
Hi Steve .. very late discovering this video, was searching for how to release after my last lesson the pro told me I wasn’t releasing the club but never explained how I should ,, if you where hitting irons is it the same feeling except throwing down ?
True (and Shawn's great!), but I can't remember Shawn ever referring to the tight helicopter swing that Steve mentioned. When I'm driving at my best, I can feel what Steve's talking about, although I've never visualized the motion like he's explaining in this video.
If you throw your arms much harder from the top, do your arms also relax right at impact to get that snap? It has to occur much quicker but is that the idea?
Steve got a question lot of pros want address . My lead hand is just touching my right thigh at p6 but still have 5 degree shaft lean . I’m a senior golfer with slower swing speed and used the throwing technique. I know most pros got the lead hand over right thigh at p6 . I hit the ball with compression but should I work to try to maintain the lag better? And how can I work on it ? I’m around a 2 handicap. Appreciate any feedback on the question. Thanks
It's hard to answer a technical question like that without seeing your swing actually moving. You're describing photographs. Trackman data would be helpful too.
Exactly! Until you discover the release and roll of the wrists forearms you'll be forever slicing it due to clockwise spin being applied to the ball ....you want anti clockwise but not a great deal

Pivot and turn more out in front of impact.
Stadler used to do this to smooth out his temper.
Pretty cool. In the process, be sure to make contact with a golf ball, since that is the general idea.
Very much a baseball swing

OK, got the throw down but how do you apply that to an actual golf swing because you are taking steps to throw and in an actual swing, you don't step.
You work the feel of it into a non step swing.
Actually you are walking in place when doing the pivot and with that , you are performing it at a walking tempo also .
