You have to have an aim.
The world shifts itself around your aim. You have to have an aim. You are an aiming creature. You look to a point and move towards it. It's built into you. Pick the highest possible aim and that sets up the world around you. It organizes all of your perceptions, all that you see and don't see. It organizes your emotions and your motivations. Then, the day manifests itself as a set of challenges and problems and if you solve them properly then you stay on the pathway to that aim. You can point in the far distance and live in the day. Having an aim will keep you afloat when the flood is coming.

AbuLaban Nowhere in what he said did he mention that what you want WILL be granted. It states the benefits of trying to get that which you want and orienting your life towards it. On the other hand, what you said is implicitly known by virtually everyone already, maybe you shouldn’t repeat it in your mind (or others’ minds for the matter) so often. You are what you think about.
My two cents. I’m just waiting for my grilled cheese to be done

Having Dr. Peterson as a prof has been life-changing. He rose to fame in a time in which the modern world needs people like him the most. I recently wrote a spoken word on my channel with a lot of his teachings and philosophies. I think we need to spread his message as much as we can in order to redirect our collective mindset. Thank you for all you do Dr. Peterson.

Read that "spare no thought for the morrow" line in Dale Carnegie's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. He says that "thought" used to mean anxiety rather than thought so it's not don't think about tomorrow, it's don't needlessly worry. Aim at the distance, but stay present.

"For Your Heavenly father knows that you have need of all these things, but seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you" There is an interesting idea here - if you can figure your life so the thing that you are genuinely aiming at is the highest possible good; then the things that you need to survive and thrive on a day to day basis will deliver themselves to you. That's the hypothesis; and its not some simple hypothesis; because what it says - "if you dare to do the most difficult thing that you can conceptualise then your life will work out better than if you do anything else" ... there is no way to find out without actually doing it... = Kierkegaardian leap of Faith. But do you have anything better to do? We know that at the end of life is death - so why not play the most magnificent game you can?

AbuLaban highest good means think about how your life could be if everything goes your way. When you are happy with your family, when you have the best job that you can do, when your relations with your spouse, parents, siblings, kids and friends are on good terms, you have enough money for future, your alcohol consumption is limited. If all things are going in the right direction for you, that’s your highest good. You should first write down these things as your goals and then everyday remind yourself that you want all of this and then work attentively whatever the day’s responsibilities are. That’s what it means per this lecture.

Very interesting. Last year I started a chemistry course but now I am more starting to realise a job as a chemist would not be suitable for me in the future. So I am switching to psychology, which I find very interesting. I am creative, inventive and think I have a heart. I was raised as a catholic. When you move on in life you start realising that there are other ways of conceptualising the world and you naturally start copying some of the behaviours that are associated with those. Which I think is a good thing, because it made me more aggressive and assertive. My parents gave me a very good foundation too though. I owe them a lot of thanks to that. Now the trick is to mould my different persona's together, fully integrate the shadow and become the man I came here to be.

So what happens when you reach your 'ultimate' aim and are then aimless? Or are you supposed to set it high enough that it is never truly reachable? Or is there no ultimate aim, and instead just a cycle of set goal->achieve->set new goal, in which you reach one greatest possible extreme (e.g. the highest possible good) and then must either find an entirely different direction or (worst case scenario) get bored and seek the exact opposite?

Isnt aiming for the highest good in all your decision something that never ends, always needs to be maintained? Maybe the highest good contains to do good for the sake of good and not for the compensation of your inner emptiness. So the goal would not fulfill you for the sake of having a goal but what it pertains to would results in ultimate happiness. So no need to worry about when is my mission accomplished? How long can I stay happy? Youd end up careless and fulfilled.

While I enjoy Professor Peterson's lectures, I have issues with the central thesis in this vlog. Peterson says that if you 'posit the highest good you can conceive of', everyday matters such as food and clothing will take care of themselves. One could say that giving all one's assets to those less fortunate is a 'very high [the highest?] good', yet doing so would result in cold and hunger for the 'donor'.

7:00/7:01 this is so true. We have this in Islam, we have almost all of the stories of the main messengers sent by the Almighty God, The One, The Only, The creator, the merciful, the Allknowing. He the Almighty have created us for a purpose and that our lives are a test, and that the results of that test will be evaluated at the day of judgment.
If you believed in the almighty and followed all of his commands, and the commands of his messengers, and did what the almighty likes and avoided what he -The almighty - hates, if you did good and fought the evil within and the evil of Satan (may the almighty damn him), if you were good to your parents and to everyone around you, if you helped the poor by giving charity; then -and only then- you may go to heaven.
Islam teaches us to do our best in our lives to achieve success in this life and in the eternal afterlife. Now no one knows if they're going to heaven or to hell, and that's why they always must keep themselves in check for every single moment of their lives until they die, Otherwise they may deviate from the optimal goal, and risk the possibility of themselves going to hell.
Everything in our lives is a test. We will be judged for everything that we have had done.

The issue that arises with JP's interpretation here is that he employs the individual with ultimate authority as to what he/she conceives of 'highest good'. It contradicts his previous assertions on the skewness of ones understanding of what is moral based on the honesty of ones choices and their relationship to lying. Hence the result is a plethora or different conclusions to what is true or good (ie. levels of conscience). It's also contradictory to his endorsement of Jung's position that humanity cannot create its own values. This is where he diverges in my opinion from classical religious thinking that divine ordinance is delivered from Logos through revelation and the act of faith is trusting that revelation.
Also, there seems to be a juxtaposition between living in the present and aiming at the goal in the future. It actually elicits two dichotomous modes of being. When one is truly present, in the eastern sense, there is a subjugation of ego and an attunement to a higher state of consciousness - what flows from that place is a natural emanation of what would be considered 'good' or 'holy'. Goal oriented thinking puts the focus and attention on the attainment of a future result, which initiates the mind and its potential for imagination and vision.
I feel like JP is almost there but there's a missing piece to this theory. It seems like there needs to be some kind of convergence between these two states. Almost like a 'flow state' of sorts.

just a thought the Splendor of the lilies is deeper than the Splendor of Solomon because the Splendor of the lilies came from a seed and within that seed was the perfect finished work of the Lily nothing else was needed similarly Adam and Eve were placed in a finished perfect garden nothing else was needed. Solomon with his best most Splendid clothing fell short because his beautiful clothing he wore was a result of his self effort or works works of the flesh. The Works of the flesh will not make you righteous before God. it is accepting the finished and perfect work of Jesus crucified and resurrected that makes us stand righteous before God Christ took the punishment that each one of us deserves so that through him God treats us as the Messiah Jesus the perfect 1 deserves. and in that and resting in the finished work of Christ God provides all that we need because of our righteousness in Christ

    • @christopherfisher5155
      @christopherfisher5155 6 лет назад

From my own personal experiences with dependencies, I found that simply ceasing the chems (alcohol too) while an absolutely necessary first step, was not enough. For me, the only to stay sober was to find out why I drank and partied. I found out that my reason was a desperate need to feel connected. The vicious way I was raised left me ill-suited to socializing and therefore I was alone a lot and the partying made it easier to be social. It was a long and terrifying road to be the "real me" without help but ultimately the only way that it would be genuine and lasting.
My aim, ultimately became to be the parent that I needed so that my child would never have to start life with that big of a deficit. I decided that I would do anything and everything in my power to make that a reality.
I learned early on that it had to be done for me and me alone; I had to want it and not do it for my kid or else the ego defense would kick in and start resenting the one that "made me change cause I wasn't good enough". I'd strongly suggest a group therapy situation and I will add that self-discipline is the key to freedom. Good luck.

Not saying I disagree with Peterson at all ....i just think that people allocate Campbells only thing is " follow your bliss " when his work is much more than that . Like Jordan only being known by his "clean your room " meme.

Um this is great and all, and I love that JP is looking into these incredible truths spoken by the Greatest Jew Of All Time- but really, it's about faith and trust in your Creator and aligning your will to His. Hello? You can't take God out of this JP. It's clearly about Him.
So glad you're a Canadian! You rock JP!

    • @ShawnHodgins

You can't take god out of it because there was no god ever in it. Don't you understand what JP is explaining? That we humans construct these ideas accidentally in our efforts to comprehend the world/universe and in our attempts to organise ourselves to have a better life. Symbols like the pyramid are just that, symbols of our thoughts/ideas/actions. In this manner, god is a symbol just like these pixel images are... used to convey a message from one human to another. Symbols are just symbols, there is nothing actual behind it.

What? Yeah, no. It's actually written "Your heavenly Father" and "Kingdom of God" in this passage JP is talking about. Also if you're into the whole context thing, Jesus is talking about God and His kingdom. That's the context and the author's original intent.
You can totally take it out of context and build whatever you want on it. But then you're missing the whole point. Read the whole chapter.

JP and this video are the context... not your personal love or interpretation of the bible. JP is using quotes from the bible to pull out meaning. No doubt there is wisdom in the bible as there is in many books throughout history. That is the only reason bible quotes are used. JP is not using them to reinforce your beliefs, he is using them to expand upon the wisdom that men wrote (and stole from previous books) in the bible. This video has nothing to do with god or jesus. It is amazing to see how you can watch this video, yet not comprehend what is in it.

he does believe in God just not Jesus that's a start God is faithful He'll get him there what is that saying that says either you got to consider the Bible written by a crazy men because the Bible says that it is inspired by God and Jesus is crazy also or He is who He says He is because He says He's the son of God and that Jesus came to set us free from our sin and no one can get to Heaven but by Him your logic can only get you so far someday you're going to need a Savior for the things you cannot overcome in your flesh only by the spirit of God just saying.

Embrace death and you will find life. Embrace life and you will find death. Christ said that too. Most people's highest concept of the good as it relates to themselves is glory and honor with financial benefits. Peterson pretty much validates them but Jesus would disapprove.

    • @MAXIEWEL
      @MAXIEWEL 6 лет назад +1

Death in the sense that you sacrifice yourself to god NOW, not just a big sacrifice will work. It has to be the best you've got. So in a sense God favored Abel because of that, because to give away the present (Death) you will live a more fulfilling life in the future (Life). This requires (Faith) Faith in the belief that you didn't waste your life chasing after some stupid Idea. But JBP argues, even if you made the wrong choice, you will grow so much from it that you still end up winning. I'm not that deep into the biblical text but this is my interpretation I hope it helps draw a connection.

      Immanuel Decastro
If you make the wrong choice you will not grow and you will not win but you if you can learn from your mistake you might make a better choice next time which does result in growing and winning. Peterson gives the impression of being very determinist but ends up erasing his own best figures. Most of what we are does not involve our own choice or our own effort i.e. Consider the lilies.

No offense to Mr Peterson, but he has a habit of misinterpreting the Bible. It's obviously talking about focusing literally on the Kingdom of God and on Holy/spiritual things, and devoting your life to Jesus, not having a goal. That simplification of it is not only a stretch but a hugely disrespectful twist on the word.

The bible is a book, a book can be interpreted differently for each individual. he's giving his take on what it means to him, and removes the religious aspect to allow non believers to relate and understand.

No. As he says "what else is there to do?". Everything is a leap of faith, you never know if an approach for a happy and successful life that has worked for other people is gonna work for you. But going for the highest good is the best out of all the unknown paths you can put your faith into
