M. Shadows (singer) has done a lot to get his voice back since his vocal surgery. This was a great performance from him I’ve seen them live 4 times. Pre 2011 his voice was so massive and powerful. I’d say the injury was apparent around The Stage time. Glad to hear his voice sound full again.
Brian Haner, or synyster gates (guitarist in the red shirt) really does run the show from a songwriting perspective in the modern age of Avenged. They have a great series on their band's channel called Breakdown and it's quite obvious listening to him he's insanely knowledgeable about music theory and a total nerd about technical playing, and their current prog direction is heavily influenced by him.
You mention the vocal harmonies. This song is a dedication to the bands late drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away in 2009 from a drug overdose. The band literally grew up together, so this was a pretty huge loss and if you ask me they haven't been the same since. The Rev was an insane drummer, deserves separate reaction videos in his own right, but what he did that really stood out in this band was that he wrote a lot of the songs and as a result would provide the backing/harmony vocals while simultaneously hammering out insane double kick drum parts. Was really something to behold. Check out Critical Acclaim - Live in the LBC as an example (or A Little Piece of Heaven if you are feeling dangerous).
Listen to "Cosmic" from their most recent album or maybe something like "Danger Line" or "MIA", this song (and performance) isn't their usual "genre", as its one of their ballads (and a meaningful one at that, taking into account its backstory), so I think you can get more out of other songs, Michael!
Saw them opening for Metallica in Ireland years ago. Someone threw up an Ireland football shirt to M. Shadows and he put it on immediately and wore it for the rest of the set. Then they brought up a randomer from the crowd to sing Pantera's Walk and he was pretty good, definitely a memorable show even though I didn't know much about them at the time.
I always love playing this song for my wife. Very easy chord pattern. Solo is pretty simple too. My favorite is the finger picking section right before the bridge. Just a great song! I always teach these chords to anyone that wants to learn to play so they can play this.

To comment on what you said about the solo... The recorded version, he actually uses less notes on this one. Single ringing notes with a sustainiac pickup, and fits the song very well.
The only thing I know of them is "Bat Country" from the early 2000s and the newest album Life is But a Dream. A lot of their "fans" don't really like that album , but I think it is a pretty interesting prog album, more so than most modern "prog metal" bands.
Funny thing, Bat Country was on the City of Evil album, and when that album first came out a lot of their "old school" fans at the time thought that was too big a departure from their previous style, lol, and these days everyone says they were never the same after the Rev passed, but I think they've continued to evolve and sound great, can't please everyone I guess

Speaking of changing chord arrangement. That’s what I would do when I was in our church band, one guy would always play in G and I would capo and play somewhere else while our piano player would play in the normal key. Always makes for a better sound.

If I can make a humble suggestion. Check out 'Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape' by BeBop Deluxe. From the album 'Live in the air age' (not to be confused with the song by the same name). If you want to check out a video performance after - cool, but listen to the OG live album recording first....then marvel that he was playing it on a semi hollow Gibson (345), on a small club stage, with Carlsboro 100watt heads x2.
3:35 My guess is that you mean a pedal point. I don't have a lot of musical knowledge, but I think that's what you mean. I've seen most people just refer to it as pedal when a note is used through multiple bars and everything else around it changes
Also, yeah the solo was improvised but not the whole thing. It's more like half-and-half. He didn't try to play the higher notes and interrupted the longer notes because he knows a distorted guitar has way more sustain than an acoustic and didn't want to leave the dead space (my guess). But as a whole the original solo it's as simple as this one because of the subject of the song
Happy to see Mike do Avenged, sad it's such a sleeper choice. Yes, So Far Away is a great song, but there are so many more impressive guitar things that could've been covered from other Avenged songs, here.
About 20 years ago doctors told him he might not be able to speak, let alone sing ever again from several surgeries involving vocal cord nodules. The fact that he can still sing is pretty impressive.

Hi Michael, do you read comments? I was interested to join your guitargate level one. It says free for everyone. But when I try to get to it, I come to ”Pay 299 $”. I would love to learn guitar playing but I’m not sure that that my small hands and stiff fingers will allow me. So paying a lot of money without knowing, is not an option. So, is it free? How can I get there?
This is sooo not the song I would ask Michael to watch first. At least not this version. I understand the impromptu nature and the benefit of getting a real reaction - but this is so not the level that these guys general provide.

THIS is the exactly way to go if you really want to know a musician's musical level, not the embellishment and tricks you can get on a full setup when playing stadiums let alone on a CD track. this way you are able to appreciate all the nuances and the skill needed to adapt on the fly such an "electrical" piece
Yea this is in 2018 which is when matts voice was at its worst. 2017 it got bad and 2018 they stopped touring. However they started again in 2023 and he sounds fantastic now, far better than he did here.
