6 years later its great to see this beautiful geetar getting some more love
I have a wood library DGT 10 top with a maple neck and it is amazing. The DGT is now my favorite guitar, and I've been playing for 59 years.
For all of us who love that mahogany humbucker tone, but hate the feel of heavy single cutaway guitars the DGT is a dream come true.
I have two DGTs, and they both get that early humbucker growl and sustain. They are definitely much more comfortable than any of the Les Pauls I had over the years. And they have a decent sound when the pickups are split, not really a Strat, but still usable.
Geez, I must be in the minority because I think they sound hollow and sterile. My old man gave me my first Les Paul, his old 81 custom, and that tone I don't think is replicated with PRS' offerings.
That said, they are beautiful guitars.

I have a '78 LP Custom and nothing sounds like those guitars. That Norlin era gets a lot of hate, but the Customs I've played from that era seem to have a bit more top end sizzle through a moderate gain amp than any other Custom from any era I've played or been in the same room with.
That said, I like PRS. Their attention to detail, even on their mid priced instruments, is far and above anything any other large guitar manufacturer (save maybe Martin) have in any price range.
The floating trems on PRS guitars are incredible, I don't know what he does but they're so musical and practical
Being a big fan of Joe Ely I was able to witness many a great show with David Grissom knocking it out of the park. I met David coming out of a Mexican restaurant in Cotati, Ca. Where
they were playing a gig that night and asked him the make of the guitar he was playing, having not seen a PRS before. He told me it was a Paul Reed Smith and that the manufacturer had given it to him for free. He was amazed at that act of generosity and obviously loved the instrument. I have since purchased a DGT myself and can testify to it's inherent goodness.
That’s strange, PRS is not known for giving people guitars. If it was the green guitar that he was using when he was playing with Joe’s band, he most certainly bought that guitar. He ordered it and it was shipped to him and he tells the story on RUclips.
Once I went PRS, I never went back...well, I did, because I just love guitars. But my eyes were certainly opened and what not...
Even without a lot of gain, notes just sustain foreveerrrr. You can feel it through the guitar, it's like nothing else I've ever played honestly
I know what you mean, I love my PRS 30th Anniv. Custom 24 Model. I got the Red Burst only because they were so back logged on the Blueish colored model. Not the Whale Blue, the other one. The craftsmanship is just top notch. I have heard that Framus makes a killer guitar also.

I've always wanted to get my hands on a Framus to try it but I've never come across one on my travels. I've heard goooooood things but I just can't seem to get my hands on one in person to have a bit of an arse around with one :/
What's your preferred model? I'd like to own one eventually. Also would you recommend the SE line at all or S2? Unlikely I would ever spend the 2 grand on a full on all American one.
I have never played the SE line but I have read many reviews and they say it is a good guitar for the money. For $2000 you will get into the S2 line unless you find one used. Mine retailed at around $3800 new but I have connections and paid $3000 for my 10-Top model. It is a PRS 30th anniv. Custom 24 Ten Top.
You can get used "core model" PRS's for about the same price as an s2 new
Still to this day the DGT is hands down the sweetest sounding guitar I've ever owned. Mick is spot on with his comment about the split coil tone. They do sound great split and I've heard a million split humbuckers. This guitar is just great in every aspect. Love your guys show! Please keep them coming!!!!!!
Always found the DGT coil splits amazing and Grissom said that normal splits are 50/50 but he wanted his at around 75% so it's more meaty and doesn't lose the volume as much. Love the thought of that and it totally makes sense!

I' d never heard before, that a guitar artist and a guitar maker sat down for at least a year or so, built a laboratory guitar with quick-change option for pickups and tested dozens of different constructed experimental pickup-versions only to meet THAT special sound, David Grissom ( Paul Reed Smith calls him his "ears"...) was looking for....- the sound of his 1959 ES-335 PAFs. So they did for this guitar - no wonder that something "very special" came out....
The PRS DGT is an incredible guitar. I have a DGT Goldtop as well as a DGT Standard (all mahogany) in Frost Blue Metallic. They are completely ace!

just bought my DGT - have always liked David Grisson and watching this video definitely helped me pulling the trigger.
I saw DG at the Saxon Pub and it was awesome. I just happened to be visiting the guitar shop next door and he was playing later that night. I started looking at the PRS DGT afterwards and found your video. I purchased a 2009 DGT 10 top and it’s awesome. Looks similar to the one u r playing. Your video helped me make the decision to purchase. The one I bought used was also signed by DG but is wearing off. Love it more so than any other guitar I’ve had. Enjoyed your video.
Love this guitar! The only thing I changed was making the split coil a push not a pull. For the life of me when my hands sweat during shows I absolutely could not pull the tone pot for splitting
Agreed.. I have a different PRS but same issue. Only design flaw I've found so far, but it's a pretty big one.
I have never really 'got' PRS's before, but seeing this may have changed all that, and how refreshing to hear a reviewer say he doesn't/can't widdle - I salute you sir!

I have that same configuration except in a bolt-on CE version. Probably same year, too. It has that old faithful look and feel to them.

I was lucky enough to see David Grissom in Austin Texas a few years back at the famous Saxon Pub.
His band was sh*t hot, and he played and sounded freaking amazing. 50watt Marshall head into a 412 cab. HEAVY tones!

Definitely a desert island guitar! The newer ones have a resistor in the coil tap to leave a bit of the dead coil in so instead of having a 3.75-4.25k single coil you get more like a 5.5-6k which is more in the vintage strat realm. It also does a little hum canceling so move over Suhr, or SRV's tech who wire dummy coils in the circuit to do the same thing
So I should go with the new ones 2021 models?

But like my Collings, it does feel traditional and 'real' to me, in a way that a lot of new guitars don't. All completely subjective of course. Thanks for watching and for the kind words.

Budda Guedes I have two DGT and they sound and play identically. Picking which to play makes me nuts because they’re both great guitars. And they get the old Les Paul sounds effortlessly. Allman Brothers sounds just flow out of them. :-)

I have two '08 DGT, and they are both wonderful guitars. They have a growl all their own, yet can get the vintage Les Paul sounds. The coil split results in a reasonable Strat sound useful for rhythm sounds, though it's definitely not the sound of a Strat. The DGT play wonderfully. Listen to what David Grissom does with them to really hear the guitar talk.

Love it. I find PRS Guitars a little too pretty for me -- I feel I'd ruin them -- but this is the perfect trade off. Looks great, sounds great and is clearly meant to be played. Also reminds me why I want to be Mick Taylor when/if I grow up.
Look for a DGT Goldtop or one that is black, with the moon inlays. They’re pretty, but not too flashy, more of a no-nonsense working-man’s guitar that you can rely on. I have such a Goldtop, that’s got chipped paint on the edges, an appropriate amount of buckle rash, and just sings.
Well put! The DGT is such a working man's/person guitar! You can pound nails all day long with them; go to the club (back when ....) plug in and blow the roof off without ever having to tune your axe ....its a fricking workhorse!!! You want to make it look beat up. Play 10 hours a day! God help us if PRS ever does that aged beat up look and charges a few G more like Fender. Ridiculous!
Hey, man! Did i read well - you're thinking, a guitar like the dgt is too beautiful for you? - Don' t think this way!! Think it over - you spent so much lifetime learning to "tame" your instrument and to find ways, to express yourself with your instrument...of course you deserve to own a beautiful and great sounding axe!!
If you really want her, take a bit care for cleaning her up and give her new strings from time to time, she will give you back every bit of love, that you invest!! - Other people spent their love to expensive cars, big houses or hip clothing, so why not expressing your love to beautiful guitars? (As far as you don' t neglect the things, your family and loved ones need...😉) - In my opinion, something which has to do with music (which is (philosophical) the marriage of beauty, culture, mathematics and emotion) also has the right to look great!
So dare to get "beautiful" sounds out of "beautiful" instruments - thats why you are a musician, man!!

I own one and love it. There's two things I would change...1 instead of push pull I would want individual mini toggle switches...2 would disconnect tobe control from neck pickup, it's not necessary. That's the only two things I would change.
I have three which are main go tos....a Launch ed SSky, a 2013 10 Top Cu 24(my Strad) and a beautiful 2000 McCarty......
*Perhaps an info on the DGT's pickups:* If anyone is interested in the frequency curve charts of the two DGT pickups: You can find the diagrams of the measured frequency curves of each pickup, when you go to the PRS website, search for the "DGT" under "Electrics"/"Core"/"Signatures"/"DGT" , run down the feature list and click on each of the pickups. Then the curve diagrams are shown.....- Perhaps this is interesting for everybody who likes to get theoretical info or likes to compare the frequency charts with some of other PAF type humbuckers ...

I own four core PRSi. My DGT is the favourite among them although they are all magnificent. It has the same finish as Mick's too.

Hi Mick. I sincerely hope you don't mind me commenting this way, but you sound so absolutely comfortable on this guitar, and you sound fantastic. In fact you sound "better" than when you play on other guitars. You're still excellent and so competent, but there's just something extra on this like "home" despite you always having your Strat as your best/default

What I find with the DGT is that in this environment it's absolutely stellar, but when things get loud and there's a band involved, the Strat is really home. It's all good - so lucky to have the option for when the mood takes. Thanks for watching!

With the greatest of respect, Mick, and as I know that you will know, it's a vibrato arm - calling it a tremolo arm just continues the age-old misnomer. That said, great show and lovely guitar!

But yeah I guess prior to that it'd been the straight ahead clean tele applications. To hear David with that throaty organic tone doing that blew my mind!
I would love to see a five minute comparison with you playing both this and Dan's Les Paul.
Not sure what it is about that specific guitar but every time I hear it, it defines what I hear in my head as 'my perfect tone'. However, I can't get near it with my Custom 24. I guess the pickups and the extra wood make all the difference (I think the body is more like the McCarty right?)
+simon french Yeah, that's right Simon. Thicker body, but around that time PRS was also doing tons of work on hardware and pickups. Despite being the same shape it sounds fundamentally different from a mid-90s C22 that I had. It's also lovely and light.
Yeah, makes sense. My C24 is mid-90s too. Oh well I better start saving again ;-)
+simon french It's a different sound. Could be worth swapping out the pickups and investigating some of the hardware upgrade options. My 22 had Dragon pickups that really accentuated an upper mid quack that wasn't to my taste. But each to their own/ a lot of people love that.
I put up with Dragons for over a year before I realized how terrible they are. (How can a pickup be shrill and muddy at the same time?) Paul makes great pickups as long as you stick to his vintage-voiced (57/08, Grissom, 58/15.) What amazes me about your Grissom is that it has that sweet compressed pick attack like a hardtail SG. It must be the slightly thicker body + nitro. Two things I can't change on my CU22 :(
If you are referring to the neck pickup on your Custom 24, then it is the pickup's different position-a consequence of the additional frets-which accounts for much of the difference you hear.
Amazing video. I pretty much enjoy everything you and Dan do. The only thing that I'd like to see on those videos were the equipment used: amp and pedals.

I own a lot of guitars, including an DGT artist model with rosewood neck. This guitar is just fantastic by all means! I especially like the coil splits - they are SO much better then anything I've heard from gibson and other manufacturers. I actually keep the pickups split most of the time :) DGT + Plexi is a match made in heaven!

Picked up a 2015 DGT a month ago. Still feeling it out. It is a different beast. Much more resonant than my other PRS guitars. You guys complain about the price of instruments. Do you smoke. Do you drink alcohol. Do you use drugs? All of that stuff cost a lot when use regularly. Not preaching just telling the truth. I drank liquor and did drugs. A LOT. When I stopped getting high I was able to afford decent equipment. Maybe you don't get high . Maybe you give all your money to your lady. My point is that if you want something bad enough, you make a way to get it. Kinda got off the subject, my apologies.
KcKennedy55 I like the way you think. I get my gear on finance mostly. sometimes 0 percent over 3 years, sometimes a littl interest ... ok sometimes too much. But i figured I will only live once and this is what I love. for a small fee a month, if that is the only way I can afford it? i will go for it. Just pray to god I can keep working and all will be fine.
I keep hearing the DGT is the BEST PRS ever made. Not one bad review have I seen or hear about. I have never played one. Why is it so much better than say a CU24/24-08/594 etc ?
Hello Rob, Mick here. There’s no such thing as ‘best’ so a better question might be, Why is it so different from a CU22 or 24? Fret number aside, it has a thicker body than the Customs and more traditional pickups. Slightly fatter neck carve I believe, different wiring. So in that sense it’s a way more traditional sounding guitar - dare I say a step or two closer to a Burst era LP than what you could expect from a PRS Custom. That manifests to me personally as a more ‘open’ tone, less focussed in the kind of strong vocal mids that I always associate with PRS guitars. It has a lot of air and depth to the tone, whereas some of the rockier PRSes are all about those cutting strident mids. Mine is also a nitro finish - the earlier ones were, again just that bit more ‘old guitar’. All of which is to say, I think you’ll find that the people who say it’s the ‘best’ PRS are those people who don’t love the more ‘modern’ tones.
As for the 24-08 and 594, I kinda became confused when all that started happening. Paul got really interested in guitars that sound and feel more old school and by all accounts they are wonderful things. So I wouldn’t say better, but I would say a step or two away from those more ‘modern’ strident tones that lovers of old guitars have a hard time with. To me anyway, more balance, more poise, more air and more dynamics in the older guitars. Modern guitars are always too much pickup for me, and not enough guitar. Cheers!

Seriously Mick, I know your other guitars are pretty nice too, but owning this one I have no idea how you manage to spend time with any of the others... It is an incredible sounding guitar and that comes from a guy who does not particularly likes PRS guitar and is a traditional Les Paul guy. I am certainly a David Grissom fan, though! Totally envious.

Yup...I agree ...changed my life in 89' when I bought that cassette...yes cassette.... then I moved to Austin and lived walking distance to Antone's and got to see him regularly back in 93- 96. He was using his Marshalls and various McCarty PRS back then.....seeing him up close was a spiritual experience....That dude is a beast!!!

I own a 2008 10top DGT and keep considering pulling the stock electronics in favor of push/ pull volume pots for coil split and make the tone push pull a phase pot....but will keep original pots safely tucked away for value and mainly because I HATE being the one who takes bone stock guitars apart for mods...but I think these mods would open the guitar up even more....but I hesitate, lol
Hello Jason, thanks for the thoughts. I keep thinking I’ll change out some stuff… then just last week we were filming a show - One Guitar & One Amp Challenge (no pedals). I choose the DGT and put it into a cranked amp….. at which point I’m really pleased about the coil split and treble bleed. But into my normal rig I don’t want either of those things. Horses for courses I guess! Congrats on the lovely guitar!
@@ThatPedalShow I am looking at being able to have split neck , full Humber bridge combo....and the opposite , both split is nice I just want as much flexibility having two volumes can offer... that's another thing ...decoupling the volumes so they can truly be blended...ideas ideas ideas...lol
Thanx for that great video!! - Your sound is *K-I-L-L-E-R!!* I am a big fan of David Grissom, saved every penny for at least three years - and bought me that great DGT last month....man, what a guitar!! It wasn' t easy for me (had many troubles with my wife...), but it's worth every penny and every stress!😉
My equipment: I play my guitars into an old british Vox AC-30 from the sixties with new celestion creambacks, using only a ts-808, mxr dyna-comp and an a t-rex stompbox delay to give my tone a bit more space sometimes.
In my opinion, in humbucker mode the DGT reminds me of old gibson les pauls or ES-335 with them great original PAFs, in split-coil mode it has much of that classical old telecasters, but (as i said), it sounds that like to me....and you're right: all in all the lady has her own sound 🙂

Erm, amps. We just dial them so they’re balanced and at the point of most reaction to the playing. It’s different with every amp, but usually is somewhere in the middle for all the controls. Balanced, responsive and loud. Loud is really important, but we understand not everyone can do this. In any case, a slightly cranked Marshall, Klon style OD and a little delay. Hello Grissom tone! Dave Grissom! I had to have a gold top DGT because when I first saw/heard him play with Joe Ely back in the early 90s he was using a gold top PRS. Indeed my obsession for gold tops (see my profile pic) can be blamed on Dave Grissom! :)

DGT come straight from the factory with 11’s and that’s what Grissom plays; They’re the only PRS that comes with them from the factory that way. I have two, and put 10’s on one, which gave it a little nastier sound, but it lost the power and guts and old-humbuckers sound that the other continued to have. I just restrung it with 11’s, and the neck and frets make the 11’s feel like 10’s on other guitars only with that Grissom growl he’s famous for.
When I watched this video, it had 594 views, which reminded of the McCarty 594, probably the coolest PRS I've seen or heard in a demo, but yours is also. I thought the 513 (or the similar Brent Mason) would be the most versatile PRS, which would be handy for doing cover band gigs.

When I say 'versatile' I guess I mean versatile within the context of what it is. I'd never not take the Strat or 290 as well. That whole Super Guitar versatile thing.... not for me. It has to be it's own thing. Plus, why take one guitar when you can take three?

It's definitely nice to have the luxury of two or three guitars on stage and switch to suit each song. It gives your audience something different look at and listen to. That said, I watched an Eric Johnson concert where he played the same Strat for the whole show, and he got all sorts of sounds out of it, but then, he's not quite human, is he :-)

My own take is that a versatile guitar, done well, is its own thing-just many different things of its own. Mind you, this is coming from someone who recently finished the wiring diagram for his 24″ scale length, double humbucker partsocaster project: 104 tonal options, with a two-band EQ (a tweaked version of Leo Fender's PTB [Passive Treble and Bass] tone circuit, from his G&L Guitars era).

I´ve got a DGT too . What pedal do you use for the demo? Or do you get the distortion from an amp? If it's from amp, what pedal would you use to get that sound? I usually use ODS and I want something more cañero. JHS AT You think it's a good option?
All the info is in the description Pablo. Long time ago now so I can’t really remember! The overdrive is a combination of amp and pedal... but mostly pedal. I like to set the amps with headroom. Cheers!
I have a Carr Sportsman , Menatone red snapper , Vemuram Jan Ray Tomo Fujita & Oddfellow Caveman v2 , I need a pedal to solos , more gain , a distorsion. Wich one do you recommend. I use the PRS DGT , a Fender Strat & a LsL Bad Bone I . Thanks !
Mick, I absolutely loved your tone in this segment. I have become a big Grissom fan of late, and I expect a DGT will be a future purchase. On your tone here...were you running both amps simultaneously?
+guitargeezer Thank you! Yeah, both amps on - we tend to use two together - in this case the AC30 and the Super, and two Kingsley Page for the most driven bits. It's a lovely noise! :0)
Love the DGT. My 2009 DGT is the best guitar I've ever played and its definitely a "keeper". Probably the perfect neck profile for me and the pickups are amazing. I was a bit worried about going up to 11's but the DGT changed my mind on that and I now put 11's on most things.
Interesting that you mentioned the coil tap giving a useable single coil tone. I love the tapped sound from the DGT but i do sometimes feel that the volume drop is just a tad to extreme relative to the full bucker. Have you tried the post 2012 wiring that doesn't fully tap the first coil? I've been thinking about doing that to mine for a while but haven't had the guts to tinker with something so perfect.
+Glasgow Guitarist Haven't tried it, sounds cool though. I have such extremes of volume available from the board that I probably wouldn't look to the guitar for level changes. I'm also always on the volume pots so there's always a sound in there somewhere. I probably wouldn't use it for specific sounds as such, more in the case where the whole mix is maybe a bit muddy, or the other guitar player has a big fat sound and I'm struggling to hear myself sing. Then I'd thin it out maybe, just to sit in the mix better. Maybe....
