Boss 03 "Matador"
** WILL CONTAIN FULL SPOILERS!! **
** HIGH QUALITY AVAILABLE!! **
- The first boss that many people get their ass kicked by (including me on my first gameplay).
But its been so long I don't remember what he does.. luckily I didn't die this time.
Anyways the main problem with this mofo is that his buff puts him at max AGI (+4).
You need to sukunda him to +1 (not neutral 0 or debuffed or he'll use that skill to max his AGI again).
You can't use any other -nda skills or he'll just dekunda himself to remove your debuffs.
From there, you gotta hope you kill him before he rapes you with his Taunt (ATK 2x up, Def 2x down) and multi-attacks.
Yup, figured those tips from this battle.. for those who plan to play this game and wanted some tips on this boss.

sukundas? you just activate my trap card! Dekunda! *pop*
sukunda doesnt trigger his dekunda its the others that do. using them is actually a viable strat, make him waste a turn using dekunda.

I actually really like this boss. He teaches you how to fight the rest of the bosses in the game: Look at what they do, then go back and adjust your team to counter what they do. Each boss is a problem you have to solve.
For Matador, it's all about creating force-resistant demons and using sukukaja to match his red capote. Do that, and you've won half the battle. Luckily you can buy the Hifumi magatama, which lets you VOID force attacks (as seen in the video), in the town before you fight him (that can't be a coincidence). Also, you can fuse at least three demons at that point that can void force attacks outright: Nekomata, Nozuchi, and as seen in this video, Uzume.
Honestly, I think the reason that Matador has such an infamous reputation as a difficult boss is because he's practically designed to whoop your ass if you go in unprepared. If you use the proper solutions to the problems he presents, he's not nearly as punishing as his reputation would suggest.
His big brother Trumpeter, on the other hand... hoo boy. That guy makes Matador look downright benign.
evil melody
Why are there no good names left?
Holy Melody was the one that I hated more. Presto! The boss just healed to full! All of your efforts in the battle thus far have been completely meaningless! ^_^
Ironically, getting screwed over by Holy Melody again and again is what eventually gave me the idea of how to finally beat Trumpeter.
i always used to forget that evil melody instantly kills the highest HP character
i had a bad habit of using diarama on demi fiend to always have him healed
then I realized how evil melody actually works
Why are there no good names left?
Yeah. The way I see it, at least Evil melody hitting the Demi Fiend has the decency of ending the battle right there. Whether Evil Melody hits the Demi Fiend, or Holy Melody hits Trumpeter, the battle is basically over either way.
But I read somewhere else that said Matador is designed to punish RPG gamers who assume that Status Effect skills are useless in Boss Fight thanks to most - if not all - RPG game out there tend to do. Especially at the time leading to SMT Nocturne's release, which mean a lot of players fall for that assumption and get wiped repeatedly by Matador, earning him infamous reputation.
"I challenge you to a duel"
4v1 lol thats not a duel
Then it is an even fight.
2:01 He's not kidding....at all.
Filtering casuals since 2003.

@@FiendMatadorSlayerOfNoobs Thank you for teaching me how to get good.
@@FiendMatadorSlayerOfNoobs Today I beated matador at level 15. After 7 tries. I only used one bead chane. That was really satisfying.

For those who didn't know, Nocturne is actually a director's cut of Shin Megami Tensei 3 with loads of additional, optional content for difficulty. We just never got the original game in the west. The Kalpas, the Fiends, Dante, the true demon ending, all stuff that was added in. When you play the game you can really tell. I found all the base game bosses and dungeons anywhere frome easy to do-able with a little of the expected JRPG grinding, but the fiends were all bastards. Matador, being the first additional boss you encounter, is designed to be trickier and tougher than the usual lot, really screws with your confidence the first time you play.
Problem is, with how the game is set up with these new things, Matador is NOT optional.
My worst nightmare was white rider and how he forces you to battle him where ever you go. I lost to him so I decided to do a fuse/grind session. When I wanted to save this SOB forced me into battle making me lose all my progress :p.
Matador is a wake-up call.
Mujtaba Ellari
there was also a third version released in Japan called Maniax Chronicle that takes out Dante and replaces him with Demon Summoner star Raidou Kuzunoha. Oh and they released a PS2 memory card with the markings of Demi-fiend.
Still pwning newbs to this day. I clean my sword with their tears.
Thank you for beating my ass. Now I will make my friend.

As much as he is essential to the Nocturne Experience(TM), one must wonder why Hitoshura didn't just toss the candelabrum to him and say "okay, fine, here, I don't even know what a True Demon Ending is, leave me alone."
This for me is one of the best games I've ever played. The atmosphere, music, and difficulty make you feel hopelessly stranded. Add to that the vast amount of mythology in this game and you are left with such a Masterpiece!
Indeed.

@@FiendMatadorSlayerOfNoobs
I tried using merciful for a battle or two to see the comparison to how it is in the amala labyrinth first kalpa since I just arrived recently.
What took me a few turns to kill a group of enemies and needing to use mp for skills. I could just punch and kill everything in one or two turns without needing any magic And then the amount of exp plus macca. I couldn't believe atlus actually made a difficulty like that.
@@zomboids2100 reminds me that I lowered the difficulty to Merciful to go through the first time in Amala Network, because playing there on hard is almost impossible.
Coming back to fight in New Game Plus and just annihilating him in 2 turns is so satisfying after the hell he gave you on play-through 1!
I grinded 10 LEVELS to beat this guy. My Demifiend had War Cry, Media, Fog Breath. I had 3 party members immune to Force. My Hero was Level 25..
Fuck this boss
+Setsuna F. Seiei This. All of this.
No offense, but why would you admit to something this embarrassing on the internet?
It isn't embarrassing...it's necessary x.x
It isn't necessary to grind at all. Good skills outweigh levelling advantage. Just fuse good demons with nice buffs and debuffs, put on the magatama with force resistance and this boss is a cakewalk.
Yea this guy probably made alot of people rage quit this game, but it was necessary to show you this game wasn't messing around.
this guy is this game's way of saying welcome to SMT ville leave ur dignity at the door
My team had 4 null: force, I called my strategy "Get cuck'd Matador"
He’s got Focus, Taunt, and Andalucia. He can still do tremendous damage to your party without Force.

Man, to think that he originally wasn't in the this game.
Matador: I’ve put an end to countless lives.

You receive a second candelambra...and the mysterious Lady contacts you, asking you to bring your prize to her, and something about other candelambra holders attracting each other...and a labyrinth...

I just got to this guy today, spent all day leveling up and fusing creatures to beat him, but I eventually got the job done. I had Uzume, Archangel, and Flaemis, all around level 20 (I overleveled a bit, not really a bad idea in an SMT game :P).
He really is an eye-opening boss as to what the game is going to throw at you. I'm glad I didn't cave and use a guide, definitely adds to the experience, even if get your ass handed to you pretty often.
I'm not a big RPG guy, but I really love this game.

I played persona 3 and then this game, first smt game truly as well. I needed 4 tries though. 3 deaths...
I’ve been in the middle of play persona 5 royal and I’m currently at okumuras palace, but I decided to get smt nocturne for a Christmas gift lol. I didn’t start playing until very recently, I’m about an hour in, and I’d say I like it. The kagatsuchi moon phase shit is kinda stupid though imo.

Even with all the sukundas, he didn't miss ONCE, but the party missed quite a lot.
He has good default agility
Before the HD remake came out i was fully expecting that the guy who voiced Skeletor in He-Man would voice Matador as well
Question: When Matador casts Red Capote (agility +4) and the party casts Sukunda (agility -1) and then the Matador casts Dekunda, does his agility stay at +3 or does it go back to +4?
Also, what does "-nda" stand for?
It goes back to +4. And I have no idea what any of the SMT words mean (agi, bufu etc) - IIRC, they come from latin or some other ancient language
Alex Samsara Thanks :)
And I was able to find out what "-nda" means. Apparently it just refers to the last three letters of "Sukunda"
Alex Samsara Its not Latin, but you are right that its from ancient languages. Several of them are derived from Sanskrit and/or Hindu mythology.
***** More generally, -nda refers to ANY of the debuffing line of spells (Tarunda, Rakunda, Sukunda) that reduce attack, defense, or agility respectively.
When Matador casts Dekunda, he removes any and all attack, defense, and agility penalties that you've placed on him.
I

Eh, I thought DDS was supposed to be easier than Nocturne? Which one should I choose first as a friendly introduction to the press turn battle system?
I'm also having some trouble with this guy... Can someone tell me how or where can i get uzume? The others i'll just level up...
2:32 nice
Bruh
1) Because of his Red Capote skill, without Sukunda/Fog Breath, he'll kill you easily.
2) Taunt+Andalucia= Death if your not careful.
3) On norrmal mode, if your party is not at full health, 2 Andalucias in one turn can kill your party. It will DEFINETLY kill your party on hard mode unless you use Tarunda/War Cry on him.
The howl when matador gets totally owned by jack frost really changed how I see this boss
And since he uses Dekaja/kunda frequently, keeping a debuff on him while buffing yourself is good since he'll only spend one turn doing any damage. A good setup for this fight is one healer, a buffer, a debuffer, and some damage. It's slow, but it works somewhat well.
It's so odd seeing a Persona I liked so much be an enemy in this game. Then again, if that's the case, then I'm going to really hate a later boss fight
music is so good
Is 18 considered overleveled for this fight? I completely wrecked him at Level 18, helped by the fact that only one party member was actually damaged by Force.
For reference, my party was Uzume, Fomor, and Nozuchi, and I was using the Hifumi magatama.
I did the same thing as you except I didn't had Formor and I think I was around the same level if not lower (I think I was 16 actually) and I also wrecked him good time.I don't think it's the level but the Magatama and your demon team that made this fight easier.Nozuchi is simply that good for Matador and Uzume is a great healer to get early game. Also the Fiend battles aren't really the hardest fights in the game though there are some exceptions I dunno I only got the game 2 weeks ago and I'm not even mid-game yet or at least I don't believe so.
I'm playing on hard difficulty, I think I was lv 20 on my first fight with him and he killed me, but I become so upset that I crossed the rainbow bridge and leveled up to lv 29, and my party was Arahabaki,Taraka,Koppa.
And then I only did this on the duel:Focus+Lunge+1108 DMG= 1 hit kill... wtf lol
I swear, by my sword and capote, that I will once again prove victorious!!
So, this is what inspired Toby Fox in creating Sans for Undertale game?

Apparently I cheesed the Magatsuhi out of him by ingesting Hifumi and bringing a demon who’s weak to force. Matador kept casting Mazan through entire fight
True. Since there is a demon weak to Force, Matador has incentive to spam Mazan, even if it means hitting a null and giving away his turn for free
No Sukukaja? Damn, you must love a challenge...
I have really fond memories of this boss. Wrecked my party once or twice before I killed him at lvl 19 (best feeling ever!). Still, if you are unfortunate enough to get hit by a focused Andalusia....that really hurts. Btw, heard rumors that you can obtain him as a fusion, any truth on that?
Yes! You can fuse any fiend
+capkovodna did it at 14 lol
Hasan Boody Good for you I suppose...
Looking at the comments to this date, I realize A LOT of people don't know how Dekunda/Dekaja work at all...
Only thing you can do is reduce HIS Agility a little and MAX yours. Because he has access to TAUNT AND a MULTI hit skill this early in the game, you got to fight fire with fire. In this case Speed with Speed. At that point of the game I think only 1 demon can learn Sukukaja.
Dante on the other hand is a nightmare... Taunt+Rebellion = rape....
My first time with Matador was a piece of cake...
Dante riped me so many new holes...

This is the equivalent of weed out courses in college.
which is why Matador in this game is of the "Fiend" class of demons. he's an embodiment of animal cruelty.
I return to pwn newbs..

at first this guy really was a nightmare, but then i found a more effective way to beat him, just grind until you have the chance to recruit a chatterskull and level it up until he learns dekaja, you dekaja his ass so he will use red capote whenever is his turn, and he will use the other one to attack or focus.
really nice boss music :)
my friend let me borrow his copy of nocturne and left me a warning about this guy. so i play up to this point to see what he's all about. after dieing to him twice in the course of 2 turns, i turned off my ps2, put away my controller and yelled "i'm done here". giving the game back on Monday.

@@promisnwekenta9703 wow it's funny coming back to this comment after all this time. In the 8 years since then I've become a huge SMT fan and completed other games in the series.

Oh, once you defeat most bosses in Nocturne, you get the option to fuse them. With the Fiends like Matador, Daisoujou and so on, you need a special item from the Labyrinth of Amala. Trust me, the Labyrinth might be hard, but the loot and XP is way better than a lot of spots. If you hit level 30, and get this item, called the Deathstone, you can fuse Matador. He's incredibly useful for a good chunk of the game!

So while each form has only about 100k hp, it technically has over 2 million, cumulative to the 8 lamps + all the misses. And he's got 26 forms. Woe to the first 6 pre-nerf guilds that went at him.
I can't believe I beat him on my first try.. I was very low on MP with all my demons, I guess it was novice luck..
So what level were you on when you fought Matador, MasterLL?
Brian Moore you can only get uzume at lvl 18 so I'm guessing he is 18+
You might be right. In Nocturne I go by the rule that almost all bosses in this game have Dekaja and Dekunda. So yeah, buffs for the win if you've got em.

Yeah this guy is really hard. LL's strategy is good though. Once Matador starts taunting its still better to go with physicals since you still get the nice buff. Wind protection is a must as well. It can get pretty dicey with his physicals and Focus + Andalucia combo.
I assume everybody first playthrough is on normal difficulty, honestly, this fight is a little bit of a let down which is a good thing cos it makes things easier for me. I got all scared cos people keep saying matador is hard af. So I tried him, got owned at first, grind a lil and fused uzume and nozhuchi both with dark might. And brought high pixie to fight too. First turn I just tried to hit and missed as you could expect, used pixie to debuff his defense, and hit with uzume and nozhuchi to get a critickal, uzume did but nozhuchi missed. After a couple of mazan pixie died so I summoned preta so he could buff our agility. Then after that keep trying to hit matador with uzume and nozhuchi to get a critickal. After that preta got killed but uzume and nozhuchi both got a critickal again and then..matador is done, he didn't even get to use his andalusia or whatever its called, the fight only lasted 3 minute,so imma finish the game and play back on hard mode later
I managed to beat him with no void force and uzume, had to use 2 bead chains and only MC and Jack Frost are barely alive. This fight should be set as the standard of challenging bosses early game.
Dideveryone know how to fuse matadore in nocture?
First, level up your MC to level 18. Second, Fuse Uzume(Pixie+Angel) Try to get Nekomata and Nozuchi which both absorb force. Recruit Nozuchi from The Great Underpass of Ginza and fuse Nekomata (Sudama+Isora I think). Use the MC's Sukunda skill learned from the Iyomante magatama four times to return Matador hit/evasion rate to normal. If none of your demons have Sukunda and you've accidentally got rid of your MC's Sukunda, Level up to 21 so MC can learn Fog Breath which is twice as powerful.
What have you done for the protagonist to have void against force?
Choose the right magatama with void force
I could swear that in the second phase of the fight, he did nothing but alternate Power Charge and Andalucia. Did you just get lucky and not see it at all, or did RNGsus just screw me over in my game?
It's all I've gotten in his second phase, the RNG gods looked kindly upon this soul, if I could get one match like the video it'd be clear sailing.
It looks like a Rampage, but if you make comparisons, it hits four times, each hit doing a quarter of the damage of a normal attack.
It does look cool though. I see now why they got him to learn it in Persona 4 as a Persona.
