  • The lyrical Berceuse was one of Chopin's later works, composed between 1843 and 1844. Discover this gem within the program of Bertrand Chamayou's album of lullabies: w.lnk.to/gncLY
The sixteen lullabies - or berceuses - that pianist Bertrand Chamayou has chosen for Good Night! embrace a diversity of eras and musical cultures: Chopin, Liszt, Grieg and, of course, Brahms through Balakirev, Lyapunov, Alkan, Bonis, Busoni, Janáček, Martinů and Villa-Lobos to Helmut Lachenmann and a world premiere, Bryce Dessner’s Song for Octave.

The Berceuse has special meaning for me and this is now one of my all-time favorite renditions of it. I’m a small animal massage therapist and make massage videos with my cats. I always wanted to make a video collage of my cat, Dillard, with this as the soundtrack. I never investigated copyright issues and Dillard died in March 2019. I figured someday I’d make a memorial video of him with Berceuse soundtrack. Whenever I heard it, I would feel melancholy. A month later I adopted two senior cats, Dinah and Heidi, who had lived their lives together in a shelter. Recently, Dinah’s health had been failing and we were at the point where I scheduled euthanasia with my vet for three days hence. She wasn’t in pain, so I had three days to shower her with love and say goodbyes. That was not to be. She passed away yesterday (10-17-20) at 1:20am. Just thirteen hours before that I was sitting at my desk with Dinah on my lap and BBC Radio 3 streaming the show “In Tune.” I was just about to turn it off, and move us to a more comfortable location when this very recording of the Berceuse began playing. I held Dinah close to my heart, looked out the window at the rain that persisted that day, and was transported to another realm. What a divine synchronicity. Thank you Mr. Chamayou!

Small animal massage therapist? To think there are starving children in the world….

@@plinyelder8156 to each their own...but small animals often form the most intense bonds with humans...and if there are ways to ease the burdens of pain for those small creatures, then why not (and massage is a viable therapy for many conditions). we can't all fix the bigger problems of the world (indeed...humanity as a whole seems incapable of figuring out the biggest problems)...but we are very capable of doing things in our own small worlds which impact those around us. for some...those closest to us are small animals. they add tremendous meaning to our lives...and often open spaces inside of us that may not have flourished otherwise. if you could ease the suffering of someone close to you with massage therapy, would you choose not to because others are starving? that's your choice. i'd probably opt for doing the small thing within my power to do.

One of my favorite musical pieces and this is easily one of the best versions I have ever heard. Unlike most Chopin the Berceuse works best with minimal rubato and he does that here as well as an amazing soft and and clear touch.
