I have a particular love for this song. When I was a child, this was one of several pieces that my mother played through the night after my sisters and I were put to bed. I will always think about her when I hear this.
I'm surprised no one has commented about these being the very sounds Liszt had heard. Perhaps Liszt paused and lingered as Evgeny did and allowed the instrument its own time to speak and breathe in its own peculiar manner. I feel he has succeeded in giving us a sense of what Liszt dreamed up in the privacy of this very room. Thank you for this.
i love how after he finishes he instantly switches from lost in the music back into the real world. Shows he's very humble and passionate in his playing.
If there is a piano God, it must be Evgeny. My boyfriend from California, a great admirer of his, coming to visit Europe for the first time last month, was on the same flight to Prague and they took a picture together and Evgeny was so nice. Thank you, maestro.
Yeah, Evgeny is so humble and down to earth. He has absolutely zero arrogance or ego. Met him backstage after a concert once, he was visibly tired and slightly awkward but was extremely nice to everyone, and made sure everyone who wanted an autograph got one before thanking us all and waving goodbye. After he finished the first solo recital in the history of the BBC Proms in 1997, he rode off in a tiny red car with his teacher and mother and smilingly waved goodbye to his fans.
How wonderful for him. I wept when i visited Liszt home. The love and appreciation of Liszt had been with me my whole life. My 96 year old mother studied piano briefly (as a small girl) with one of Liszt last students.
For me, as a person who has been playing the piano for almost 8 years, this performance was incredible, I managed to feel every note. Completely immersed yourself in the music)

One of my leaving cert students played this in her practical exam last month on a digital piano. She is 18 years old and from Poland and her talent for this Liszt piece was amazing. But here Kissin is playing a grand piano, so the grand piano sounds a lot more rich and powerful than a digital piano. The problem about digital pianos is that the timbre doesn’t actually match the lightness and even the powerful emphasis on acoustic pianos like the grand piano. But of course, she did amazingly well, so next time, I hope she would try this piece on a grand piano, but she’s just started grade 8 though. This piano player here has a huge master of theory, so unfortunately at the moment, this student from Poland, she wouldn’t yet be at that level like Kissin, but let’s not make a comparison because she has a different piano journey than Kissin. Competitions are typically in sport, not music. Music is rather seen as expressive and conveying emotions rather than skill and showboating
Well Liszt himself was an incredible musician, so I don’t think it’s too big of a deal for him. Though I do know he was very humble and saw tremendous talent in a few others, so who knows, maybe Liszt would be very intrigued to hear Kissin play :)
everything I would give to play on that piano one day, just like Kissin did. I feel that this piano is the true spirit of Liszt, and playing it must be pure magic, something incredible
What a joy. What a treat. We are so fortunate that Charles shared his exquisite playing with the RUclips community. Rare that there is no discussion. It’s nice, for a change of pace.
Thank you for posting this video. What a privilege to be inside Liszt's house in Weimer and to hear the sound of his Bechstein! This piano is now almost two centuries old and beautifully maintained! But it can no longer sustain like a modern concert grand. Therefore playing on it must have been a huge challenge! Kissin adjusted his playing to the piano and its by now limited capabilities.
This piece has a special place in my heart. I played it as a child and as part of the repertoire I used to get into music school. Though I received a scholarship, I found that I wasn't well suited for a career in music -and the likelihood of becoming a music teacher, as most music students become. I have always believed that most recordings of this were far too fast so it's great to hear this more deliberate pace. I always look to Kissin for inspiration.
One of those exceptional "piano world moments" happily captured for us to enjoy!! Maestro Kissin exhibits superb control over the voicings on what we can only assume was an unfamiliar piano for him. I would love to see somewhere an analysis of the ways Steinway and Bechstein pianos compare and differ in sound and feel.

Such a rich, deep, noble sound this piano has. Nowadays, there is a race to produce the LOUDEST piano. Manufacturers care less and less about beautiful sound. Of course, Evgeny is amazing, I won't even comment on his playing.
I definitely don’t think that’s true but I am curious to know what makes you say that. As a classical pianist I find modern pianos - modern Bechsteins, in particular - to have a very lovely tone quality and producing better sound particularly in the bass register.
Bechsteins are actually easy to control, beautiful instruments to play on. Keep in mind this particular instrument is from another era. And the person recording is up close and probably using their phone.
the aim of steinways - especially NYC built - to fill massive american concert halls - has kind of ruined most concert pianist's ability to play on salon style european pianos. he struuggles w voicing a lot here. its odd to hear imperfections in this god of a pianist, but its obvious why.

How musicians dont cry when playing such beautiful music is beyond me. Thank-you so much for posting
Why cry when you are expressing it with the music :)
Singing can make you cry easily. It is hard to cry when you play the piano. Too technical to explain.
