He just looks so unbelievably like a crazy murderer. In fact, if he was an actor playing a part in a movie as a crazy murderer, everybody would say his appearance was ridiculously over the top.
Yep, I know we're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but if one were looking for someone to play the part of a particularly heinous murderer, this guy gets the part, hands down.
It's the parents faults actually. They spoiled him then when they told him they couldn't anymore (or weren't going to) he snapped in a fit of rage and greed. It's really not the guy's fault but moreso the family's fault. He was a really spoiled kid. Also, I believe he gave in to those sinful feelings of greed. Satan is very real and in this world we live in so it easily is proven in every day life. An existence of forces beyond what we know does exist. It is biblical...we don't fight against flesh and blood but against principalities etc. evil forces are all around us. We are fallen in nature, more evidence of Adam and Eve in the biblical text. To prove this, I can tell you my parents raised me and my sister the same way. My dad worked, payed all the bills, supported his family and my sister and I all the way until he died, which was when I was about 37-38. We both lived at home as we never met anyone until recently. My sister did work but he still supported us all. He didn't want us to go out into the world and get jobs ever. He even didn't want us to go to school (college). He was a mechanic who worked for the county. He retired and we still lived on what he got. When he passed my mom and my sister and I got his pension. It was cut but we still had enough to live somewhat comfortably. I moved out 4 years ago, relocated to be with someone I met and still am not working. I am looking but with no experience, it is hard to find any work at "normal" jobs. I am a musician so I planned a career in that field since a young age. I worked hard every day after school up in my room at guitar 8 hours a day. I got really good at my craft and wanted to go out and make my dream of stardom come true when my parents stopped it. They said it was too dangerous. They basically told me what I wanted to do was a pipe dream. After some time of hearing this, I started to believe what they said so I never went against their word. I was afraid to leave my family, my dog, my house and the comfort of what they provided me. What I'm saying is it's not a kid's fault but the fault of the parents. I nor my sister of course would ever react the way this person did if our parents told us they were no longer supporting us. That's because we're not bad seeds. This guy was a bad seed. Maybe he is sorry for what he did. Only God knows that. What he did was caused by being spoiled, being lost , so relationship with God, no anything spiritual probably, if anything religion was used as their faith. It all stems from those factors and the fact that the devil exists and this is one person who gave into his demons and let greed get the best of him.
He wouldn’t have finished that list either. Guy quit in the middle of disintegrating his parent’s bodies. If that wasn’t a task worthy of seeing through, then it’s likely he gives up on every task and goal prematurely.
I think he specified killing knives so he made sure to get both the knives for killing as well as different knives for the disarticulation of the bodies. It’s clear to me this kid felt he was smarter than everyone else, but his current situation proves otherwise

Another fascinating analysis, Dr. Grande. Perhaps he should have titled his notebook, "How I intend to supersede Chris Watts as the most inept at covering up a murder."
From what I read about this case, the mother and father, as well as their other two grown daughters, who were Joel's half sisters, were communicating in person and by texts (family meetings, of which Joel was not a part of) about the fact that Joel was going to be cutoff financially. So, the entire family was aware of this, except Joel. That makes me think there was some kind of fear/trepidation about telling him.
Another interesting thing, how junior communicates with lawers and boyfriend. He is softly spoken, calm, quite, like a little boy. He will smile at them and look in the eyes. Very well adapted socially. Nobody could have guessed he is a monster inside.
@James Tarantula It's more that he knew HOW to be social and had been taught. He apparently fooled the boyfriend and during the trial he would smile and thank anyone who handed him anything. He also giggled and wrote down things he found funny- like a child. His family had a lot of events and would invite him to join in. He refused and if he was forced to do so, he'd just offer a joyless smile, keep his answers short, not ask any questions, and slink away at the first opportunity.
A few of you mentioned "boyfriend", was he gay? I just don't recall ever hearing he had a relationship with anyone, other than his roommate. He was a loner and antisocial. Any romantic relationship would surprise me. I've only looked at the highlights of this case. It's just so tragic.
This is one of the saddest cases you’ve reviewed, in my opinion. I am an only child close to Guy’s age, a little older, and so close with both of my parents, who are the same ages, and held the same professions. They’d provided me with support throughout my education, and I don’t know exactly what the state of their finances were, but they went out of their way to help me. I cherished this support and love them unconditionally. I couldn’t imagine hurting them in any way, and when my dad developed cancer, I’d have taken his pain if I could. Guy is a cold and truly evil individual. He was so lucky, since the kind of loving family he had is fairly rare. I lost my dad, and like a child, I still miss him every minute of my life, a year and a half later. This case hits me hard, and I hope he experiences the torture that his parents had experienced at his hands. Thank you, Dr. Grande, for reviewing this case with compassion, and a little humor. Thats because they instilled in you communication, accountability and consequences. This turd had none of that. They turned him into a selfish egotistical maniac whose goal in life is never work just take. Who in their right mind pays for NINE YEARS of schooling?!? @jasminej2844 Ha! You think theres something like that in the US? We have them in some bigger cities. But the waitlist to get on them is *years* . If not a decade. Thats why theres people living in tents and sleeping on the street everywhere. If you have mental issues that prevent you from working and taking care of yourself youre pretty much left on your own unless you have family to help you. Unless you act up and freak out in public. Then they throw you in jail. Or if youre lucky, a mental hospital. For about 3 days. Then you go back out on the street.

It's almost like he wanted to get caught, and committed the murders as gruesomely as possible to ensure that he'd go to prison where he wouldn't have to support himself. It could explain why he wrote such obviously incriminating notes in such a child-like way.
I agree. i think mama coddled him because she knew he was "off" in a few departments...while the rest of the family (and apparently most people) distanced themselves from his antisocial and odd behavior. My "official diagnosis"... he was totally f'd in the head and wanted a good excuse to get revenge on all the people he blamed for his misery. He was too chicken to just kill his miserable self , and even plead for the death sentence... IF he was convicted, (duh, how could he not be?) Apparently he couldn't finish anything for himself! So brutally scary all around... you just never know what evil lurks in your proximity!
I wonder if there was an underlying motive of creating infamy for himself. He would be going from someone who people don't look twice at to someone who will have a Wikipedia page devoted to his crime. He carried a thick folder to court and he would add handwritten notes he made during trial. Could he be looking to write a book?
he had gone to the store because he cut himself during the crimes ...he was headed back to the house ( but someone had called in a well check and when he got back the had tape all around the house) to finish his clean up and blow up/set the house on fire I think he thought he could get away w/it ......he was not the brightest light bulb in the house

Whenever I hear these types of stories my heart always goes out to the first responders/police officers who are the first to arrive at these scenes. Can you imagine the horror? I know that they are trained but I just can’t believe that someone can become completely indifferent to this type of thing.
I couldn't agree more! I would also add the medical examiner who has to do the autopsy. Granted, in this case she had been briefed by the detectives what was coming so she could steel herself in advance, but still.
Yes. The lead detective in the Chris Watts case Dave baumhover had or has ptsd after witnessing the destruction that Chris Watts did. He had full on ptsd for a long time - he would run out of stores or restaurants if he saw little girls, etc. He had Flashbacks. He’s had therapy and is getting much better but he had to quit his job as a detective when he didn’t really want to. This poor man really suffered.

And while CW did get what he deserved, that detective got what he didn’t deserve. I sincerely hope he somehow recovers from that. My 1st time hearing this case and im horrified and disgusted. The parents were so kind and generous to there leach of a son and this is what they get in return ? Hearing the mother worked so she could give money to the son is sad.😪 the son disrespecting there bodies after death in such a heinous manner makes me think he's a psychopath. I was so excited to see you were doing this case! I’m one of the ones who requested it. This guy has no empathy. I thought that meant psychopath or sociopath? But he was definitely in love with his roommate. I couldn’t believe he had the nerve to try to blame his parents and say how they ‘never came to visit him’...meanwhile the truth was he had insisted that no one at home be told his address or contact info.

My mother allowed men to molest my sister and I as kids so she could get drugs. She was extremely abusive and even, at age 10, stabbed me in the eye over a hot dog I wasn't hungry to eat. To this day I cannot eat hot dogs from the stove and I'm 43. With that said, I still never ever ever thought of taking her life.. I also went into the field of Forensic Psychology and Applied Behavior because I wanted to know why I didn't turn out like her and why my sister is successful in life she's not a good person but I am and it hurts my soul if I hurt someone's feelings. What I see that Dr. G doesn't by him writing down kill knives is because in my opinion, it shows he was fantasizing about the killing while writing that list.
@@Swnsasy I think at the end of the day, you cannot be made into a killer. You are or you are not. Doesn't matter what is happening. It doesn't mean that you can't, it just means you have nothing in you that wants to kill on any level. I actually have to euthanize animals sometimes for work, and it is hard to explain, but I am not built for it. It has a massive impact on me, that I can't explain. These are animals who are suffering immensely, afraid and confused. Animals who benefit greatly from going to permanent sleep, rather than dying slowly and painfully. I want those animals to be euthanized and I know that it is the right thing. But that doesn't matter... I am not built for killing. I can only do so many, before I hit a wall, and there is no way I could do it everyday. It is horrendous. I hate hate hate hate it. Honey... you just are not a killer, that's all.

I remember one day she told me the job of a pastors wife and how important it is.. It made me feel like that's all she wanted, importance.. When I got married 6yrs ago, she just told me I'm worthless, I'm a nobody and then tried to turn my 3 adult children against me. Her own two love me, but won't tell her they call me or fly to visit me.. My kids are 25, 21 and 18, none have kids but my niece had her first at 18 and my nephew at 17.. I NEVER EVER EVER said anything about it and was supportive of them, I had my first at 18!!!.. She goes off on me telling me I think my kids are better than hers.. She did the same when I started my Masters degree, she said I think I'm better than her.. I stopped, 1yr away from my PhD in Forensic Psychology and Applied Behavior, still feel like I'm doing something wrong to her. She protected me during that growing up time with our mom.. That's why I don't get why she hates me now.. It hurts me because I just don't think anyone is better than anyone. I just wanted to better my life as a single parent to do better for my kids and make them proud.. My son is a Marine, my middle daughter is getting her degree in Forensic computers and my baby girl just graduated in June and following her big brother to be a marine. I just tried hard is all. My husband treats me like I'm the only woman alive, I don't want her angry at me because I'm happy, I miss her. She just hates me and will never tell me why..

I'm not gonna lie, this is one of the reasons I chose not to have children - I was afraid I'd get one like this. Since I found out when I was 42 that I have bipolar disorder as well as several other comorbid mood disorders, I'm glad I skipped it. There's no way I'd want to give my mental shit to another being.
Author Lionel Shriver wrote a brilliant book about this called 'We Need to Talk About Kevin'. She chose to stay childless. She likened the decision to have children to quote: "Leaving your front door open... You never know who is going to walk in".
You speak the truth. I've lived with depression for decades, and my mother and her sisters were "high-strung". I saw the writing on the wall, and had surgery to prevent any "oopsies" years ago. Best to let the line die out.
I think he has a big shock in store when he realises he killed the only two people in the world who cared deeply for him, and were always in his corner. In jail he will soon realise no one cares if he lives or dies - and many will want him dead. He's no totally alone, through his own dumb choices. For an extreme narcissist like him, that will be tough. It's ironic that, because he'd never worked and didn't know the value of money, he assumed $500k life insurance would be enough for him to live on for the rest of his life. If he lived to be 80, it only represents $10,000 a year - and he's used to a far better lifestyle than that! And in fact, had he got away with the murders, I reckon he'd have burned through that cash within 5 years tops - and then been penniless, without his mum and dad to help him. He's a pathetic, useless man-child, but his parents played a big role in making him so. Who pays all the bills of their adult child, so he can stay in college for NINE YEARS??? Crazy.

@@LCx829 American Journal of Psychiatry, as well as other respected medical journals document more than 10 million people who struggle with BDD in the U.S. alone. And that number is believed to be greatly underreported. Suicide ideation and attempted suicides for BDD are incredibly high and well documented and the prevalence of BDD is increasing worldwide. It is a subject worth Dr. Grande's analysis, well, at least to BDD sufferers and their friends and families who care about them.
Great idea! Because I think there is more of this than people realize. I believe a lot of people who want or have a sex change really suffer from body dysmorphia, and should be counselled in that manner. I know a few people who have had sex change operations and not all of them were happy with the result even if they don't admit it very freely. It's like you can just tell they are still not comfortable in their own skin even after the change. Of course this is not true for every transgender person, but I think the percentage is larger than people realize. And before y'all go nuts calling me names about being a transgender hater, you couldn't be more wrong. I have a niece who felt safe enough with me to come out as both transgender and bisexual. She has not even told her mom, and they are very close and my sister is also a non-judgmental person. I think she has one friend who knows. She has asked me to keep the secret until she can come out at age 18, and I gladly do so. if she finds she has no support anywhere else, I will gladly take her to any appointments she needs. She has told me she has no desire to alter her body, but if she did, I would be by her side to offer support and advice every step of the way. She's a super smart kid, she is aware of all the dangers and has absolutely no desire to put herself in such a position. But the fact that she feels basically fluid gender and fluid sexuality is going to be a big enough problem with our straight laced family; she is going to need a strong supporter and she has an auntie who will stand by her choices because I know she has made them intelligently and thoughtfully.

Leaving no inheritance for my Mum who had to pay out of pocket for my grandpa's palliative home care & really could have used a inheritance to reimburse her for all the money she put out for grandpa's care. It's ironic because he wanted to be taken care of and now he is. He gets free room and board, free meals, water, tv, air condition, free health care and dental care. He is set for life. (No wonder prisons and jails are overflowing with criminals. They get taken care of by killing someone. What a message !!)

This case was devastating to the family. I frwrd’d thru the details but I got the picture. I was secretly hoping you’d analyze this one but it’s so salacious, overkill...then the notebook and bizarre courtroom behavior of jr. it seemed he was fascinated with his “work” and was enjoying the family seeing it too. I watched every bit of the impact statements. I was never moved so deeply by such powerfully articulated outpouring of grief. Much respect for their bravery. They had to have been completely drained after all of that. And to have handled the sensationalism with such grace is admirable in my opinion.
When you deal with evil. You get a dark sense of humor. I once work at a world famous law enforcement agency. I’ve met people from cartels killers to a man who kill his father and ate part of his penis.
@@soniauk4284 Yes, it was difficult to observe his coldness and hear the horrific details. The Timothy Jones Jr. trial last year was the most difficult to endure for me.
I remember when I was taking my first programming course in high school, they had us write down real life actions in pseudocode. So if I wanted to make a sandwich, I'd write something like "get plate, open bag of bread, take 2 bread slices, put 2 bread slices on plate, etc." This is really hitting close to home.
It seems to be a response to trauma. In the same way victims of shellshock / PTSD developed a 1000 yard stare after experiencing combat. I imagine his arrest, the murders, destroying the bodies, etc was taking a huge psychological toll on him.
"Get drunk driving alcohol..." I'm imaging going into a liquor store and seeing a sign for "Drunk Driving Alcohol" in one aisle and "Drink Responsibly Alcohol" in the other. Also, "Take this book with you." Love it! 🤣

Dude!! I’ve been waiting for this one, thank you. Let me start by saying that I am in Northern California and was panic digging a 5’ wide fire break around my house (alone) when the GUY case was being broadcast live from the courtroom... and I listened to it all as I dug. For three days I listened to the incredible details of this case from the first responders to the investigation, forensics and witnesses, I heard it all. Two things stuck out, ...one...he fled the scene before his work was done. He had the meat grinder, he had the materials and plans ready, he hadn’t removed the trash, he left a half smoked joint in the bathroom and most importantly, his notebook detailing the murder plan was left behind. I think the mother’s co-worker called in a wellness check way too soon and threw his plan completely off. The second most dramatic point was the only time we heard Guy’s voice, as he did not testify. A recorded phone call from jail between him and his only friend/long time room mate was, in my opinion, most revealing. He says “I had one small chance at happiness and I fucked it up” as he encouraged his friend to move on with his life and forget about him. A deep bond was obvious, the genuineness of their connection was more than roommates. I believe the money was not exactly why this murder took place. I have no proof and the prosecution did not even hint at homosexuality because it may not have even been recognized by Guy at all, I’m going on is a compassionate perspective trying to understand this persons crime. They are very un nerving eyes. If you saw him walking towards you, at night & you were alone , you'd cross over & pretend to make a call so he thinks someone's on the other end & doesn't see you as vulnerable.
Yikes! This is why it’s so important for families to address mental health issues. Many times family members say things like oh that’s just how he is or that’s just how she is when there are warning signs of emotional / behavioral problems.

Um, there's nothing in this case that makes me think the parents did anything wrong or that they were in any way to blame for this sick child they raised. In general, it's pretty common to have a kid who's kind of a loser, kind of going nowhere in life, mooches off the parents and there's no reason to worry that that kid is going to physically harm anyone. People like you just want to pretend that there's any way to control for things like this. The scary truth is that some people are born evil and there's nothing for it.

Just like my cousin. 50 yrs old, living and using my grandmother. I saw him in her bed. I asked why, he said her tv is better. I'm like get your own place. Moral: Do not continue supporting your child financially until he is 28 years old when it is obvious that he lacks motivation to do anything with his education or life. And in Joel Guy's case, by this time it had become too "traumatic and "inconceivable" for him to accept his parents' decision to stop doing so!!

The fact that the first thing he did was pay off his apartment and his college tuition for several months seemed odd, though I suppose he could have mentally twisted that into an alibi of sorts ("Why would I kill her? She just paid all of this stuff for me.") There was a call played during the trial between him and his "best friend" wherein he spoke calmly but his words were remarkably histrionic. I just feel like there's something more to his personality that we don't know. (Which is fine as it doesn't appear relevant to the case. It just makes my brain itch not being able to see part of the puzzle that is his personality. 🤷♀️)
Clearly there's a lot more going on. So many people assume he just "snapped" (whatever that means) but I'm sure if we knew the details of his early life and could witness some of his past behaviors, it would be very illuminating. I'm sure there's more to his parents than what is being said as well
The day after the murders he used his dead mother's credit card to pay off several months rent on his college apartment, plus tuition fees. This was because he knew he'd have to wait for the $500,000 life insurance pay out he expected to get from the murders, and he wanted to know his bills were paid up for some time in advance to take the pressure off himself while waiting for that cash. God forbid he should get evicted from his accommodation, or have to - shock, horror - have to wait tables to support himself, like other students!
I studied psychology in college many years ago, and so much more is known today than when I was in school. Thank you for your insight, Dr. Grande. Your videos take me back to my days of sitting in various lectures and being fascinated at the intricacies of the human psyche.
Thank you for covering this case! One thing that stood out to me while watching the trial was his lack of emotion or response to testimony. When they showed the body camera footage of the crime scene being discovered, he simply looked interested. And his book of premeditation is just unbelievable. Such a tragic and strange case.

He went to Lousiana School of Math and Science for high school and I know quite a few people who were classmates of his. They said he was quiet, weird and asocial then. My friends were pretty okay but it's not uncommon for folks coming out of that school to have major adjustment problems to real, everyday life; also suicide amongst post-graduates of that high school seem higher than what i would usually expect but that could be due to many factors.
Same for SMAS in North Carolina. I am not sure why, but maybe when a critical mass of oddball eccentrics get together, they let their guard down, and their weird behavior doesn't seem so weird. Then this carries into adulthood, especially for guys like this who never really grow up mentally.

He did have some kind of an emotional attachment to that man and he said he thought his plan was the solution to their happiness. Thanks for doing this case, although there’s not much detail about his background.
I think his parents knew he was weird from a young age, but rather than face it and get him psychiatric help, they were in denial, told him he was special and treated him as such. He grew up believing it - and became dangerously entitled. If there is anyone alive who knows the realities of his childhood, I wouldn't be surprised if it featured some really disturbing behaviour that should have rung alarm bells, eg deliberate toileting 'mishaps' and cruelty to animals. I think they threw money at the problem, believing they were protecting him by paying all his bills and keeping him at college all through his twenties. But that isn't good for any child, as it stops them maturing and learning the life skills we all need to get on with others and negotiate the adult world of work. Obviously the Guys could not support him forever! When they belatedly stopped his funding, 10 years after they should have done, he was ill equipped to cope. They had removed his need to earn a living, so he'd never even had a part time job! it's doubtful he could envisage holding down a job and living independently - and it seems that must have been his parents view of him. The violence he showed them before and after death showed huge rage. I think he wound up resenting all the support they gave him, which ultimately didn't help him to develop as a man, but kept him dependant on them. They didn't deserve to be murdered, but their poor parenting did play a part in moulding the monster he became. As the saying goes: 'No good deed goes unpunished'.

I understand that there is no evidence of maltreatment. I wonder though, is it possible for man to end up as he did without a substantial failure of parenting? Not necessarily malice, but at the very least denial regarding his lack of moral development. It hardly seems possible that there was an absence of what objective observers would have called warning signs.
Never heard of this case until now. Despicable for someone to kill over money, let alone savagely kill one's own parents! He's right where he belongs! Reminds me of the Watt Family murders, though he has never confessed and insists he's innocent to this day. There's also an FX documentary series on this case that just started on 9/25. Many years ago, there was also a movie called Fatal Vision, which was based off a book of the same title about this case.
I'm only just hearing of this case as I watch this video, so mine is by no means an informed opinion, but the fact that he stabbed both parents many more times than was necessary to kill them indicates to me that he was motivated by rage. I get that his parents appeared to have treated him very well, but he may not have perceived it that way, and who knows, maybe there was abuse that we don't know about.

It's the parents faults actually. They spoiled him then when they told him they couldn't anymore (or weren't going to) he snapped in a fit of rage and greed. It's really not the guy's fault but moreso the family's fault. He was a really spoiled kid. Also, I believe he gave in to those sinful feelings of greed. Satan is very real and in this world we live in so it easily is proven in every day life. An existence of forces beyond what we know does exist. It is biblical...we don't fight against flesh and blood but against principalities etc. evil forces are all around us. We are fallen in nature, more evidence of Adam and Eve in the biblical text. To prove this, I can tell you my parents raised me and my sister the same way. My dad worked, payed all the bills, supported his family and my sister and I all the way until he died, which was when I was about 37-38. We both lived at home as we never met anyone until recently. My sister did work but he still supported us all. He didn't want us to go out into the world and get jobs ever. He even didn't want us to go to school (college). He was a mechanic who worked for the county. He retired and we still lived on what he got. When he passed my mom and my sister and I got his pension. It was cut but we still had enough to live somewhat comfortably. I moved out 4 years ago, relocated to be with someone I met and still am not working. I am looking but with no experience, it is hard to find any work at "normal" jobs. I am a musician so I planned a career in that field since a young age. I worked hard every day after school up in my room at guitar 8 hours a day. I got really good at my craft and wanted to go out and make my dream of stardom come true when my parents stopped it. They said it was too dangerous. They basically told me what I wanted to do was a pipe dream. After some time of hearing this, I started to believe what they said so I never went against their word. I was afraid to leave my family, my dog, my house and the comfort of what they provided me. What I'm saying is it's not a kid's fault but the fault of the parents. I nor my sister of course would ever react the way this person did if our parents told us they were no longer supporting us. That's because we're not bad seeds. This guy was a bad seed. Maybe he is sorry for what he did. Only God knows that. What he did was caused by being spoiled, being lost , so relationship with God, no anything spiritual probably, if anything religion was used as their faith. It all stems from those factors and the fact that the devil exists and this is one person who gave into his demons and let greed get the best of him.
He wouldn’t have finished that list either. Guy quit in the middle of disintegrating his parent’s bodies. If that wasn’t a task worthy of seeing through, then it’s likely he gives up on every task and goal prematurely.

From what I read about this case, the mother and father, as well as their other two grown daughters, who were Joel's half sisters, were communicating in person and by texts (family meetings, of which Joel was not a part of) about the fact that Joel was going to be cutoff financially. So, the entire family was aware of this, except Joel. That makes me think there was some kind of fear/trepidation about telling him.
Another interesting thing, how junior communicates with lawers and boyfriend. He is softly spoken, calm, quite, like a little boy. He will smile at them and look in the eyes. Very well adapted socially. Nobody could have guessed he is a monster inside.

@James Tarantula It's more that he knew HOW to be social and had been taught. He apparently fooled the boyfriend and during the trial he would smile and thank anyone who handed him anything. He also giggled and wrote down things he found funny- like a child. His family had a lot of events and would invite him to join in. He refused and if he was forced to do so, he'd just offer a joyless smile, keep his answers short, not ask any questions, and slink away at the first opportunity.
A few of you mentioned "boyfriend", was he gay? I just don't recall ever hearing he had a relationship with anyone, other than his roommate. He was a loner and antisocial. Any romantic relationship would surprise me. I've only looked at the highlights of this case. It's just so tragic.

This is one of the saddest cases you’ve reviewed, in my opinion. I am an only child close to Guy’s age, a little older, and so close with both of my parents, who are the same ages, and held the same professions. They’d provided me with support throughout my education, and I don’t know exactly what the state of their finances were, but they went out of their way to help me. I cherished this support and love them unconditionally. I couldn’t imagine hurting them in any way, and when my dad developed cancer, I’d have taken his pain if I could. Guy is a cold and truly evil individual. He was so lucky, since the kind of loving family he had is fairly rare. I lost my dad, and like a child, I still miss him every minute of my life, a year and a half later. This case hits me hard, and I hope he experiences the torture that his parents had experienced at his hands.

Ha! You think theres something like that in the US? We have them in some bigger cities. But the waitlist to get on them is *years* . If not a decade. Thats why theres people living in tents and sleeping on the street everywhere. If you have mental issues that prevent you from working and taking care of yourself youre pretty much left on your own unless you have family to help you. Unless you act up and freak out in public. Then they throw you in jail. Or if youre lucky, a mental hospital. For about 3 days. Then you go back out on the street.

I agree. i think mama coddled him because she knew he was "off" in a few departments...while the rest of the family (and apparently most people) distanced themselves from his antisocial and odd behavior. My "official diagnosis"... he was totally f'd in the head and wanted a good excuse to get revenge on all the people he blamed for his misery. He was too chicken to just kill his miserable self , and even plead for the death sentence... IF he was convicted, (duh, how could he not be?) Apparently he couldn't finish anything for himself! So brutally scary all around... you just never know what evil lurks in your proximity!
I wonder if there was an underlying motive of creating infamy for himself. He would be going from someone who people don't look twice at to someone who will have a Wikipedia page devoted to his crime. He carried a thick folder to court and he would add handwritten notes he made during trial. Could he be looking to write a book?
he had gone to the store because he cut himself during the crimes ...he was headed back to the house ( but someone had called in a well check and when he got back the had tape all around the house) to finish his clean up and blow up/set the house on fire I think he thought he could get away w/it ......he was not the brightest light bulb in the house

Yes. The lead detective in the Chris Watts case Dave baumhover had or has ptsd after witnessing the destruction that Chris Watts did. He had full on ptsd for a long time - he would run out of stores or restaurants if he saw little girls, etc. He had Flashbacks. He’s had therapy and is getting much better but he had to quit his job as a detective when he didn’t really want to. This poor man really suffered.

And while CW did get what he deserved, that detective got what he didn’t deserve. I sincerely hope he somehow recovers from that. But he was definitely in love with his roommate. My mother allowed men to molest my sister and I as kids so she could get drugs. She was extremely abusive and even, at age 10, stabbed me in the eye over a hot dog I wasn't hungry to eat. To this day I cannot eat hot dogs from the stove and I'm 43. With that said, I still never ever ever thought of taking her life.. I also went into the field of Forensic Psychology and Applied Behavior because I wanted to know why I didn't turn out like her and why my sister is successful in life she's not a good person but I am and it hurts my soul if I hurt someone's feelings.
What I see that Dr. G doesn't by him writing down kill knives is because in my opinion, it shows he was fantasizing about the killing while writing that list.

It doesn't mean that you can't, it just means you have nothing in you that wants to kill on any level. I actually have to euthanize animals sometimes for work, and it is hard to explain, but I am not built for it. It has a massive impact on me, that I can't explain. These are animals who are suffering immensely, afraid and confused. Animals who benefit greatly from going to permanent sleep, rather than dying slowly and painfully. I want those animals to be euthanized and I know that it is the right thing. But that doesn't matter... I am not built for killing. I can only do so many, before I hit a wall, and there is no way I could do it everyday. It is horrendous. I hate hate hate hate it. Honey... you just are not a killer, that's all.

I remember one day she told me the job of a pastors wife and how important it is.. It made me feel like that's all she wanted, importance.. Her own two love me, but won't tell her they call me or fly to visit me.. My kids are 25, 21 and 18, none have kids but my niece had her first at 18 and my nephew at 17.. I NEVER EVER EVER said anything about it and was supportive of them, I had my first at 18!!!.. She goes off on me telling me I think my kids are better than hers.. She did the same when I started my Masters degree, she said I think I'm better than her.. I stopped, 1yr away from my PhD in Forensic Psychology and Applied Behavior, still feel like I'm doing something wrong to her. She protected me during that growing up time with our mom.. That's why I don't get why she hates me now..
It hurts me because I just don't think anyone is better than anyone. I just wanted to better my life as a single parent to do better for my kids and make them proud.. My son is a Marine, my middle daughter is getting her degree in Forensic computers and my baby girl just graduated in June and following her big brother to be a marine. I just tried hard is all. My husband treats me like I'm the only woman alive, I don't want her angry at me because I'm happy, I miss her. She just hates me and will never tell me why..

I think he has a big shock in store when he realises he killed the only two people in the world who cared deeply for him, and were always in his corner. In jail he will soon realise no one cares if he lives or dies - and many will want him dead. He's no totally alone, through his own dumb choices. For an extreme narcissist like him, that will be tough.
It's ironic that, because he'd never worked and didn't know the value of money, he assumed $500k life insurance would be enough for him to live on for the rest of his life. If he lived to be 80, it only represents $10,000 a year - and he's used to a far better lifestyle than that! And in fact, had he got away with the murders, I reckon he'd have burned through that cash within 5 years tops - and then been penniless, without his mum and dad to help him. He's a pathetic, useless man-child, but his parents played a big role in making him so. Who pays all the bills of their adult child, so he can stay in college for NINE YEARS??? Crazy.

And that number is believed to be greatly underreported. Suicide ideation and attempted suicides for BDD are incredibly high and well documented and the prevalence of BDD is increasing worldwide. It is a subject worth Dr. Grande's analysis, well, at least to BDD sufferers and their friends and families who care about them.
Great idea! Because I think there is more of this than people realize. I believe a lot of people who want or have a sex change really suffer from body dysmorphia, and should be counselled in that manner.
I know a few people who have had sex change operations and not all of them were happy with the result even if they don't admit it very freely. It's like you can just tell they are still not comfortable in their own skin even after the change. Of course this is not true for every transgender person, but I think the percentage is larger than people realize.
And before y'all go nuts calling me names about being a transgender hater, you couldn't be more wrong. I have a niece who felt safe enough with me to come out as both transgender and bisexual. She has not even told her mom, and they are very close and my sister is also a non-judgmental person. I think she has one friend who knows. She has asked me to keep the secret until she can come out at age 18, and I gladly do so. if she finds she has no support anywhere else, I will gladly take her to any appointments she needs. She has told me she has no desire to alter her body, but if she did, I would be by her side to offer support and advice every step of the way. She's a super smart kid, she is aware of all the dangers and has absolutely no desire to put herself in such a position. But the fact that she feels basically fluid gender and fluid sexuality is going to be a big enough problem with our straight laced family; she is going to need a strong supporter and she has an auntie who will stand by her choices because I know she has made them intelligently and thoughtfully.

This case was devastating to the family. I frwrd’d thru the details but I got the picture. I was secretly hoping you’d analyze this one but it’s so salacious, overkill...then the notebook and bizarre courtroom behavior of jr. it seemed he was fascinated with his “work” and was enjoying the family seeing it too.
I watched every bit of the impact statements. I was never moved so deeply by such powerfully articulated outpouring of grief. Much respect for their bravery. They had to have been completely drained after all of that. And to have handled the sensationalism with such grace is admirable in my opinion.

@@soniauk4284 Yes, it was difficult to observe his coldness and hear the horrific details. The Timothy Jones Jr. trial last year was the most difficult to endure for me.
I remember when I was taking my first programming course in high school, they had us write down real life actions in pseudocode. So if I wanted to make a sandwich, I'd write something like "get plate, open bag of bread, take 2 bread slices, put 2 bread slices on plate, etc." This is really hitting close to home.

It seems to be a response to trauma. In the same way victims of shellshock / PTSD developed a 1000 yard stare after experiencing combat. I imagine his arrest, the murders, destroying the bodies, etc was taking a huge psychological toll on him.

Dude!! I’ve been waiting for this one, thank you. Let me start by saying that I am in Northern California and was panic digging a 5’ wide fire break around my house (alone) when the GUY case was being broadcast live from the courtroom... and I listened to it all as I dug. For three days I listened to the incredible details of this case from the first responders to the investigation, forensics and witnesses, I heard it all. Two things stuck out, ...one...he fled the scene before his work was done. He had the meat grinder, he had the materials and plans ready, he hadn’t removed the trash, he left a half smoked joint in the bathroom and most importantly, his notebook detailing the murder plan was left behind. I think the mother’s co-worker called in a wellness check way too soon and threw his plan completely off.
The second most dramatic point was the only time we heard Guy’s voice, as he did not testify. A recorded phone call from jail between him and his only friend/long time room mate was, in my opinion, most revealing. He says “I had one small chance at happiness and I fucked it up” as he encouraged his friend to move on with his life and forget about him. A deep bond was obvious, the genuineness of their connection was more than roommates. I believe the money was not exactly why this murder took place. I have no proof and the prosecution did not even hint at homosexuality because it may not have even been recognized by Guy at all, I’m going on is a compassionate perspective trying to understand this persons crime.
I wish all beings be free from suffering, and are filled with love and light.

Yikes! This is why it’s so important for families to address mental health issues. Many times family members say things like oh that’s just how he is or that’s just how she is when there are warning signs of emotional / behavioral problems.

Um, there's nothing in this case that makes me think the parents did anything wrong or that they were in any way to blame for this sick child they raised.
In general, it's pretty common to have a kid who's kind of a loser, kind of going nowhere in life, mooches off the parents and there's no reason to worry that that kid is going to physically harm anyone.
People like you just want to pretend that there's any way to control for things like this. The scary truth is that some people are born evil and there's nothing for it.

He was so sloppy (leaving so much evidence behind) and him asking for the death penalty if found guilty make me think he just didn't really care about his own life much. Moral: Do not continue supporting your child financially until he is 28 years old when it is obvious that he lacks motivation to do anything with his education or life. And in Joel Guy's case, by this time it had become too "traumatic and "inconceivable" for him to accept his parents' decision to stop doing so!!

Joel Guy Jr is incredibly perplexing. The fact that the first thing he did was pay off his apartment and his college tuition for several months seemed odd, though I suppose he could have mentally twisted that into an alibi of sorts ("Why would I kill her? She just paid all of this stuff for me.")
There was a call played during the trial between him and his "best friend" wherein he spoke calmly but his words were remarkably histrionic.
I just feel like there's something more to his personality that we don't know. (Which is fine as it doesn't appear relevant to the case. It just makes my brain itch not being able to see part of the puzzle that is his personality. 🤷♀️)
I agree I wish his roommate and best friend and family would she light on his characteristics.
Clearly there's a lot more going on. So many people assume he just "snapped" (whatever that means) but I'm sure if we knew the details of his early life and could witness some of his past behaviors, it would be very illuminating. I'm sure there's more to his parents than what is being said as well
The day after the murders he used his dead mother's credit card to pay off several months rent on his college apartment, plus tuition fees. This was because he knew he'd have to wait for the $500,000 life insurance pay out he expected to get from the murders, and he wanted to know his bills were paid up for some time in advance to take the pressure off himself while waiting for that cash. God forbid he should get evicted from his accommodation, or have to - shock, horror - have to wait tables to support himself, like other students!
I wish someone would interview him.
I think he was in romantic love with his only friend (who was just kind but likely had no idea of Guy’s attraction to him)
I studied psychology in college many years ago, and so much more is known today than when I was in school. Thank you for your insight, Dr. Grande. Your videos take me back to my days of sitting in various lectures and being fascinated at the intricacies of the human psyche.
Thank you for covering this case! One thing that stood out to me while watching the trial was his lack of emotion or response to testimony. When they showed the body camera footage of the crime scene being discovered, he simply looked interested. And his book of premeditation is just unbelievable. Such a tragic and strange case.

He went to Lousiana School of Math and Science for high school and I know quite a few people who were classmates of his. They said he was quiet, weird and asocial then. My friends were pretty okay but it's not uncommon for folks coming out of that school to have major adjustment problems to real, everyday life; also suicide amongst post-graduates of that high school seem higher than what i would usually expect but that could be due to many factors.
Same for SMAS in North Carolina. I am not sure why, but maybe when a critical mass of oddball eccentrics get together, they let their guard down, and their weird behavior doesn't seem so weird. Then this carries into adulthood, especially for guys like this who never really grow up mentally.
🌼That’s quite sad that they tend to have a high suicide rate in comparison to other people. But I did hear that ally of people with high IQ’s suffer from depression and have higher suicide rates, as being really smart can be quite lonely.🌼

He did have some kind of an emotional attachment to that man and he said he thought his plan was the solution to their happiness. Thanks for doing this case, although there’s not much detail about his background.
That is very interesting.
I think his parents knew he was weird from a young age, but rather than face it and get him psychiatric help, they were in denial, told him he was special and treated him as such. He grew up believing it - and became dangerously entitled. If there is anyone alive who knows the realities of his childhood, I wouldn't be surprised if it featured some really disturbing behaviour that should have rung alarm bells, eg deliberate toileting 'mishaps' and cruelty to animals.
I think they threw money at the problem, believing they were protecting him by paying all his bills and keeping him at college all through his twenties. But that isn't good for any child, as it stops them maturing and learning the life skills we all need to get on with others and negotiate the adult world of work.
Obviously the Guys could not support him forever! When they belatedly stopped his funding, 10 years after they should have done, he was ill equipped to cope. They had removed his need to earn a living, so he'd never even had a part time job! it's doubtful he could envisage holding down a job and living independently - and it seems that must have been his parents view of him.
The violence he showed them before and after death showed huge rage. I think he wound up resenting all the support they gave him, which ultimately didn't help him to develop as a man, but kept him dependant on them. They didn't deserve to be murdered, but their poor parenting did play a part in moulding the monster he became. As the saying goes: 'No good deed goes unpunished'.

I understand that there is no evidence of maltreatment. I wonder though, is it possible for man to end up as he did without a substantial failure of parenting? Not necessarily malice, but at the very least denial regarding his lack of moral development. Also, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on the Jeffrey MacDonald case, a former Green Beret doctor who was convicted of killing his wife, unborn son, and two small daughters back in 1970. Reminds me of the Watt Family murders, though he has never confessed and insists he's innocent to this day. There's also an FX documentary series on this case that just started on 9/25. Many years ago, there was also a movie called Fatal Vision, which was based off a book of the same title about this case.
The information in these videos should be so fascinating... But this guy's delivery is the cure for insomnia. 😴🥱
I'm only just hearing of this case as I watch this video, so mine is by no means an informed opinion, but the fact that he stabbed both parents many more times than was necessary to kill them indicates to me that he was motivated by rage. I get that his parents appeared to have treated him very well, but he may not have perceived it that way, and who knows, maybe there was abuse that we don't know about.
