I can not read notes, as a 4-year-old I was given the chance to learn and as soon as I read the title "Mary Had a Little Lamb" I played it all by ear. So the teacher gave up she said I can't teach this kid anything. I had been playing since 2.5 years of age a Gift from God and I still play today that is why I have my channel. I love keyboards but for years I played piano. You play beautifully by the way. You can tell I play by ear because My fingering is all of my own doing not what is taught. hahaha. I also like Accordion and started out on Diatonic Accordion. I admire your work.

This was super helpful. Literally just started piano today, and this helped a ton. I've played guitar for 20 years, so I've got a bunch of music theory under my belt, and the way you layed it out on the keyboard made everything click. Subbed! Awesome job!

I started watching this, and thought that it might be for beginners. But you've convinced me the importance of the basics. I will practice my chords, but especially my inversions, in every key. I'm glad that I found your videos on scales and chords, and especially how to practice them. I started 7 months ago at 65 years, and I always joked that I had two left ears my whole life. But my Mom also bought herself a piano when she turned 65 and kept playing for another 20+ years. Thanks for being my tour guide.

This tutorial was incredibly helpful in delineating what notes are foundational and what notes are simply included to enhance the song. It also taught me how essential it is to know the timing of the harmonic rhythm. Earlier today, as I was practicing, I said to myself that I really needed to learn how to combine harmony and melody. I believe God led me to this video because, as I opened RUclips, this video was there in my recommended list. I believe many souls will be won because of this channel. Be encouraged and continue to play and instruct to God's honor and glory. God bless.

my dad told me i can do first chords F, G, and C, from the C scale. You just kid according to melody. Like if a melody is, C, D, F, E, C. In the melody, you play C chord, but when play F, you change do F chord inverted. If melody is, C, D, G, F, C, so you play C chord, but when play G, you play G chord. Simple, isnt? But i want to improve know ;-

  • @allanjeong

    Thanks for the video, Warren!
For me, the easiest way to add left hand and improvise and spontaneously harmonize any melody with bass or root notes is to simply play the root note at one, three, or five note intervals plus one octave below the melodic notes played on the main downbeats. All I do is look at whatever note I’m playing on the right hand on the main downbeat and play with my left hand pinky the notes at 1, 3, or 5 note intervals below the current melodic note (then holding my left hand in a fixed claw, play or roll over the notes at 1,5, 8 and 10 above the root note for form the chords).
So while I’m playing any given song melody “by ear” on my right hand, I am harmonizing not by ear but instead “by sight”. When I discovered this simple trick, I was suddenly able to play songs by ear on piano (and play any song in any key and/or start a song on any note on the piano without having to pick in advance what key to play the song) which I was never able to do over my 40+ years playing the piano!

also learn what intervals you’re playing on guitar (ie what a major third vs minor third etc look like on guitar between each string) and what those intervals are on piano. once you have that all you have to do is transfer intervals from one instrument to the next and it’s done

I’m kind of adept at reading piano sheets but now I’m tired of waiting for someone to produce good copies wherein many people play it exactly how you play it. I want to create my own style of music the way I perceive it and improvise however I like. I’m really amazed at people who learned piano by ear and can immediately play anything. I’m still a novice when it comes to playing by ear and your video just made me took a great leap in learning. So thank you so much, sir!

Thank you Warren. This tutorial was so helpful for me as could not figure out how or when to play chords with left hand. Breaking it down on how to split up the chords between the right and left hand while keeping melody on top has just alleviated all of the confusion and frustration I’ve been having with playing songs. What a blessing and you are a great teacher!
